    These are tempera paints which is used for all kids painting. Its washable and not actually acrylic. The main difference between acrylic and tempera paint is in their composition. Due to the makeup, acrylic is more durable, glossier, and thicker and is better suited for traditional art projects. Tempera paint is thinner, faster drying, and easier to clean up, even after drying.

    • @wayfaringspacepoet

      so are tempera paints essentially a kind of kids' grade gouache?

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 2 роки тому +27

      @@wayfaringspacepoet Yes. What is sold as tempera paint to kids is essentially a low quality version of a gouache. There is real artist tempera, which is the actual tempera, but that is a different type of paint that is made with high quality pigment and egg. I have no idea why the term tempera is used for kids' paints.

      I used to hate kid's tempera paints, but I kind like them now. They're semi-transparent so I can see my lineart, and they wash right out like watercolor. You just need to find the paper for them. It should be quite thick, yet doesn't have sizing like watercolor paper. Thinning with water honestly makes them feel awful, so when I want a tint, I just use my white paint.

    I only ever got these little pots as part of paint by numbers sets. My most vivid memory of them is that the lids were either impossible to open, didn't close properly or refused to stay open. Sometimes all of the above.

    Thank you for sharing another video with us!
    I'm sure you've already thought of it (since you do so much washi tape art), but I've always found for larger areas, covering the area I want to mask off with making tape/washi tape and then cutting it out (like you do with your washi tape art) works leagues better than masking fluid. It doesn't tear up the paper, I don't accidentally miss areas, and there's no drying time. I still use masking fluid for tiny areas but definitely prefer tape for larger sections.

    I don’t “think” I’ve seen it (at least not in a while) but since you are so good/experienced in cutting washi tape - have you used it as “masking fluid”? (Either washi tape/painters tape/art tape) I feel like it world probably take the same amount of time to do (brushing vs cutting) - or like you mentioned (using masking fluid more) maybe you could do a dedicated video for masking fluid with different types/brands and different art mediums? I’ve definitely had experienced the same issue with masking fluid 😭 I really like how the dragon & background turned out! The crayola videos are some of my favorites 💜

I use masque it for most of my watercolor paintings but bought the Molotow masking pen on a whim and I was surprised at how well it worked! I believe that you can create no matter the supplies, since you are a tremendous artist! So cheap paint is not a roadblock for you!

      Some other comment said to "pull it off slowly in the same way you pull a command strip" (whatever that means!) so that might help.
      I usually just use washi tape/masking tape and cut around whatever I need to mask, which works well if you don't mind potential knife marks on the paper (which is most visible when using watercolors over it, but can also be used to your advantage if your cut-lines are clean and look nice). Might also be able to avoid the marks if you're light-handed and only cut through the tape! Would definitely test these tips on a small scale before using them on a big piece though, just to be safe ☺️

    I’m sure someone has said this already. But to keep masking fluid build up on your brush, work it in some very soapy water (like 2parts soap and 1part water, and using a liquid dish soap like dawn) make sure it covers all the bristles and DON’T WASH OUT THE SOAP. Dab off the excess water but still keep it damp, and then start using it with the masking fluid. It will make the masking fluid easier to wipe off the brush in between strokes and helps cut down the buildup.

  • @vsnrm5451
    @vsnrm5451 2 роки тому +1

    I also have issues with masking fluid, so instead I just use masking tape over the shape and a exacto knife to cut around whatever I'm trying to mask! It works better for me than the fluid that more often than not messes with my paper, although you might get some knife marks on the paper if you cut too deep through the tape. I don't mind it since the alternative is so much worse 🤷‍♀️

    Hey Kasey! I’m a watercolor artist that relies a lot on masking fluid, so I thought I could give you some tips:
    -Try to apply it in a constant thickness
    -Remove it by pulling on it slowly, like you’d remove tape from the piece. Rolling tends to break up the paper easier.
    -Once in a while, wash your brush while applying. Latex is water soluble while in liquid form.
    Good luck!

    Hey Kasey you should try a ruling pen to apply your masking fluid. They are cheap and come in different sizes. Takes a little getting used to because it’s basically a dip pen but the best part is they are metal so the masking fluid won’t ruin anymore brushes. You can even use them with paints to make really crisp lines. Might be worth looking into.
