For issues relating to poor scent throw and bad tops we would first recommend adding any fragrance oil at 185 degree and pouring at the lowest temperature possible. This should improve the scent throw and the finish on the tops of the candles.
@southern8127 135 is the best temperature. Just remove the wax from the heat and stir occasionally while monitoring the temperature. It will not be hard to hit 135 on the dot. Consistent pour temperatures are very important to making quality candles.
Thanks for a very informative video! I have been making soy candles for a few years now and its really rewarding. I make them for my own use and for gifts. Tea lights are a favorite!
Any stainless steel pot or can can be used, but we would recommend using a double boiler. For cleaning the pitcher, it is best to wipe down the inside of the container with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol while the container is still hot.
@AUSNick87 No, in fact it tends to be the opposite. Anything you add to a candle will tend to slow the burn. So generally speaking a colored candle will burn slower than an white candle using the same wick.
@rmbb10 Thanks! We recommend tins for beginners, you might want to try them first. Otherwise the Status Jar is really great since the sides are parallel and it's a manageable diameter for soy wicking (3" instead of 4" in the apothecary). We recommend preheating jars to the same temperature as the wax is recommended to be poured. With Golden Brands 464 that is 135 deg F.
Yes, you can. The flashpoint is the temperature at which a fragrance can combust if exposed to open flame or spark. Adding fragrance oil to wax that is above the flashpoint will not cause it to combust. With fragrance at room temperature and no flame there is no cause for concern.
@rmbb10 Rough tops are generally caused by fragrance. Make sure you are weighting the right amount of fragrance, adding it hot (185 degrees F), and stirring well (2 mins). That will usually fix the problem.
@msngr2 Thank you for the compliments! I'm glad you found the video useful. We are testing wooden wicks internally, but I am not sure if or when we will carry them.
@aquagirl626 A 10lb bag of Golden Brands 464 would only cost you $14 at candlescience, which would be enough to make 30 of these 8oz tins. Once you add in fragrance, wick, and dye that would come to about $3 per candle. These make great gifts and can be very profitable if you decide to sell them. If you only want one candle then you're right it would not be affordable to make it yourself, this is, however ideal for people who love candles and would like to have several or give homemade gifts
@afkeyes Thank you for the compliment! We recommend pouring CB Adv at 125, you may want to try that. Also since we made this video we have switched from glue dots to the wick stickums we sell on the site now. The stickums work much better and will almost never pop off the bottom of a clean container.
@chinewmarie If you go to our website and click on the learning section in the top navigation bar, then click the link for 'Beginner Candle Making with Soy Wax' there is a linked list of all the materials used.
@kensfreedom That is caused by the wax shrinking. If you follow the directions on this video with Golden Brands 464 you should not have shrinkage problems.
Thanks for answering my question. I have another. why do I get air bubble and holes around the wick when then dry. What i normally do is save a couple ounces when i pour one, then when it drys I go back and melt the left over wax, and top off my candles and it works perfectly but its very time consuming.
Your wicks may not be large enough 4 the container u r using (thats why u have a well)..always save a lil bit of wax after pouring, sometimes 2nd pours are necessary. Just pour along the top & you should have a nice surface. Or a hairdryer on a low setting can flatten it out 4 aesthetics. Hope this helps
Burned the last of my Apple Candle that I tested using your fragrance oil. Everyone loves it! I just love your fragrances, I have about 20 fragrances...I haven't tested them all but what a delight! I just made 2 more of the Apple Candles.......smells sooooo good! Thanks Candle Science!
For accuracy we would recommend always weighting your wax out with a scale. We offer scales through our site or you can get one at your local department store.
@lbritton1 Absolutely. Using less of a potent fragrance is the way to go. Generally the more fragrance, the tougher the candle is to wick. So using less of a strong fragrance is much better than using more of a less potent one.
Wow. Best candle making video. I've found a website (candlescience) with everything me and my friends need. Read tons of helpful tips in the comments and the video is very easy to understand. Overall I give candlescience a nine out of ten rating. Go candlescience! :D
@FlOpPiNgGoLdFiSh We use industrial hot plates in our lab that are great but expensive. If you don't want to invest in one a double boiler is less expensive and still very safe. We use the double boiler method in our new video: Simple Paraffin Container Candles.
this vídeo was so helpful ordered all my supplies from candle science' but the bag of wax didn't say when to pour the color" so watching this did help. thanx will be ordering again . But do the company ley's small Business owners order in bulks? Love the candles and how easy you put it' on how to make candles
We're so glad this helped! When adding dye to your wax, you can add it at the beginning of your melting process or at 185°F before adding your fragrance. We also offer wholesale, or bulk discount pricing, directly on the website! If your order qualifies, the discount will show up right in your cart.
I really enjoyed watching your Soy Candlemaking Tutorial. It was clear, concise and very helpful. I was then led to your website which I'd not yet seen. Great website. I'll surely be ordering from you in the very near future. I have one quuick question: I'm looking for wooden wick candle suppliers, would you all be interested in selling them in the near future at all?
If you decide not to buy the pitcher, what kind of pot/pan would you recommend using and how would you remove all the wax out for later use? and is it safe to heat the wax on a stove?
@liukitty Unfortunately I am not familiar with shipping policies of other sites. I just searched Google for 'UK soy wax' and found several local distributors.
Is there a burnin point for the fragrance oils? I make soap and alot of fragrances burn off in certain hot temps. What's the best temp to add fragrance without the wax being too hot??
The flashpoint is the temperature at which a fragrance can combust if exposed to open flame or spark. Adding fragrance oil to wax that is above the flashpoint will not cause it to combust. With fragrance at room temperature and no flame there is no cause for concern.
@JustTryAndTry The form that the wax is in doesn't matter. To my knowledge all US produced soy wax is flaked. But if you can get high quality soy wax in slabs it should work fine.
i understand that i will need the pitcher and the thermometer but how much soy wax, fragrance, wicks etc will i need? i really want to get into candle making as a hobby to maybe earn some money on the side and also to give as birthday gifts and christmas gifts. thank you in advance:)
This may be a crazy question, but... I see that there are different soy way ratings for the scents for sale on the site. Can I buy a level 3 and just use less in it to decrease the potency or will it alter the consistency?
@afkeyes Q: I don't get how a pound of wax makes 3 8-ounce candles. A: Containers are rated in volume ounces, not weight ounces. If you look at the containers on our site we show the conversion. A pound of wax fills 3 8 oz containers by volume. Q:if I purchased a different type of soy wax should I use the temps on the Candle Science product page? A: Yes, the temperatures listed in the video are only for GB 464
Can you tell me why my soy candles are sinking when I burn them instead of burning straight across? Also, they have a bumpy texture on top they are not smooth like I've seen before??? I am using 100% SOY WAX
@southern8127 That is going to require more room than we have here. Go to our website, click on the support link in the top navigation, and send us a support email. We'll be happy to help.
I thought a pound was about 2 cups? I made candles yesterday and i used 1 1lb of soy wax and i used sage and two days later I lit it, and I couldn't smell it (and it's a strong scent) did I do something wrong? Or should I wait more cause it made 6 4oz jars...
When your fragrance oils says flash point 200 degrees etc, what does that mean? Do you add the fragrance oils at that temp? I noticed some of your fragrances have flash points of 185-200. I wanna start making my own candles as well!
Thank you for your great video. Very informative. I’ve started making soy candles as I’m doing charity fundraiser in 3 weeks time. I’ve made 5 candles so far and everything would be okay if not the round cracked circle about an inch from the edge of the jar. I got rid of it by rubbing my finger over the cracks but I don’t know why this is happening?. It looks like the wax around the glass is setting faster and the middle slower. Have you ever experience that? I’m cooling my candles In a room temperature so it’s really puzzling me. Any suggestions?
This video can be substantially shorter and more enthusiastic. I'm already on the website, I know its cheaper than buying individual candles at the store. I know I can gift, sell and use them. What most people might not know is the varying things to note about how the wax settles, suggestions for scents (what does the site mean by throw? and how is it rated?). Don't rattle a long list of requisites including a separate heat source, just show me how to use your stuff on my normal stove. I showed this video to my friend expecting it would sell them on it but now I have to explain how less laborious it is from the explanation just to try what I think can be a fun and enjoyable craft.
Hi..I am residing in UAE and I love candle making as a hobby or for business in the future. I tried to find a supplier of materials for candlemaking here but unfortunately didn't find any. How can you help me, thank you very much.
hi im making soy candles and paraffin candles with the paraffin candles im using vybar to try make them smell better but they still seem weak also they don't seem to burn evenly any info would be good thanks lee
Beautifully made, I have a question im noticing that my wics and burning very ugly meaning they are turning black as well as the soy wax as it burns. Im not sure if its just because it was white and vanilla scented. I also notice that some of them sink a little in the middle Do you have any tips?
@xxkleenexrockxx If kept at a high temperature for too long certain FOs will lose strength. We recommend adding hot to make sure the FO can fully dissolve, but then not leaving the FO hot for very long.
Hi my name is Wanda and I want to start my own candle business but I need to know how much fragrance oils to use to a 4 oz and 6 oz candle and how much soy wax to use if I was doing a dozen candles I need to know measurements

Ok today will be my 1st time making a candles. So wish me good luck and this video was very simple to follow for 1st timers :)
Thanks for making a calm, no-frills video on candle making. Very well done, and it is greatly appreciated.

@heavymetal691 The white film is something that just happens with soy wax. If you really want to avoid it you should use a different wax.
@icekat83 If you want to make soy pillars you should use wax specifically made for that application. We recommend Ecosoya PB Pillar Blend.
Because of the low melt point of soy wax, soy candles tend to burn slower, however using the correct wick can affect the burn time.
I have the largest candle school in europe and I would just like to say good job!
@chinewmarie We're using Golden Brands 464 Soy Wax.
@Dar1usJr If you're looking for good prices on shipping boxes I would recommend trying Uline.

@oldfryrice We used a hot plate in this video, but we switched to a double boiler in our new video: Simple Paraffin Container Candles
Lol, I love how she had to specify what sex on the beach smelled like. Remember guys, "the drink" okay.
@carsten4mary Unfortunately we do not ship to the UAE. You might want to try searching for a local supplier.

where did you get those gorgeous stainless steel containers (the big ones for melting) please? thanks for great sharing video

how do you put the holes in the popscicle stick???

Hello, Where can I buy the warning labels for the candles? Thanks for the video!
Alexia Ousley Amazon & CandleScience have them.
You're welcome, glad you found it helpful. You can see all of our candle warning labels here: www.candlescience.com/candle-packaging

I purchased 464 wax . I'm using 4 inch container. Help . I can't smell my candles. What's the temp for adding fragrance?
Were to find pretty tins and glass bowls ?

How long will the burn time be
On this type wick and soy wax please
@candlescience Thank you so much. I hope to try this soon!
dose this video ever state where you get the soy wax needed to make the candles.
Can we put pitcher on induction
The aluminum pouring pitchers are not induction-compatible, unfortunately. For this reason, we do encourage the double-boiler method when using them, or using a hot plate and being sure to stir often. That being said, if you are able to find an induction-compatible pitcher or pan, you can certainly use that method!
Hi, when you make the candles, then light them does all the wax melts where you can see the bottom of the tin, or is the wax melting to much.
Depends, it is fine if it all melts to the point you can see through it. You just don't want the wax to evaporate completely, so we recommend leaving a half inch sitting at the bottom by the time you throw it away. This will prevent heat damage to the container, being the glass can get hot itself and possibly shatter.
Hello, I am having some issues with my soy wax.... I would melt it and once it's cooled down a bit, I would add the scent to the soy wax....I would smell it as I am stirring it...then all of a sudden, the smell will disappear. What am I doing wrong.
Where do you get your candle making supplies??
Thank you. Its very useful
do soy candles burn longer than others?
what brand hot plate do you use? does it matter if it has temperature dial, or just "low, med. hight"?
What wick would be correct for a 8oz paraffin container?
Where can you purchase the warning labels?
We sell a few different options on the website here: www.candlescience.com/candle-packaging
whats different about soy wax and regular wax?
what type of soy wax flakes are you using?
These are container candles - not to be removed once poured.
Can anyone tell me why my candles are not becoming white? Is the second time I am doing and again it’s like a beige colour and all I am adding is only fragrance on my Soy wax. Please if anyone know and could tell me that would help me.
