After seeing Claudia use Dark Magic so AMAZINGLY in season 2 it leads me to wonder if she could beat Viren in a face off. Great vid btw, very interesting points👏🏿🌼❤
not at all. Viren has 30 years more knowledge and experience. Like Claudia essentially got a white strip for healing her parylsed brother. Viren changed the climate of two Kingdoms for a long time. And it didn,t seem to have too much of a side effect. He killed the dragon king performing a dark magic so op that it rendered his body to look like it does now. Also the show implies that the more skilled a practitioner is the more less he gets effected by certain level of spells. Like Callum got effected by a spell that Claudia spams without trouble.
Honestly, I think spells that give crippled people the ability to walk again or spells that resurrect the dead are a bit more dangerous than attack/trap spells when it comes to what needs to be sacrificed. Claudia just gets pitch black eyes for a few seconds with the other spells she uses, but major recovery spells like those are practically either killing her or making her look like Viren when he’s drained of life force.
Dark Magic reminds me of Necromancy in the game Anima: Beyond Fantasy. All other magics alter the flow of souls while Necromancy consumes them. Maybe a long term effect is that Dark Magic can deplete magical energy entirely and bring and end to the fantastical forever. It looks like an analogy to renewable and non renewable energies. A very nice theme overall.
@@RohaniBoy Thanks. I'm really loving this series. It seems an overarching theme will be "is doing good worth any means?", and Dark Magic is very symbolic of it. Like how it slowly chips away Claudia and Viren despite their best intentions, and carries away the lives of the three queens and apparently Harrow. It has many themes relevant today, but this one is critical to look at matters such as wars justified by a supposed desire to protect peace, is vengeance really worth it and so on.
@@lpcanilla92lol bc regardless of their intentions it’s still “dark magic” .. it’s not natural for their being so how could it really be good intentions when ur basically stealing someone’s else soul power and using it for your own reason
I'm curious as to whether Dark Magic is really as unnatural as the series has depicted it thus far. The Soulfang Serpent suggested by Viren to save Harrow's life early last season was said to hunt by draining the spirit from its prey, something which seems at least analogous to Dark Magic. It would be interesting if they didn't depict it as an *inherently* evil practice, but rather something which is easily subject to abuse and a last resort for desperate situations only.
I think that is what it is. But the humans like Viren have made it into an evil practice. I think like you say they will expand on the practice more, at least I hope they do.
Hey I thought about something. The Sun is a star, so the sun's magic is actually stars magic. So thats how there is a place for the seventh source -in fact the six: the force of life, Dark Magic.
Hey good thinking. The sun is a star but maybe it's different in their eyes because it's a star so close to earth that the power they draw from it is different? Just a thought. And maybe you are right, maybe because of the sun being a star dark magic comes to fill the void of the 6th primal source
Maybe Stars give out two types of magic, one long-range and one short-range. The short-range one is the one we feel from the Sun, but we would feel it from other stars if they were closer. The long-range magic is what we feel from all the stars, I'm guessing its weak from any one star but strong with all the stars together.
I think the term Stars magic is actually referring to the depth of the Cosmos as on the official webpage of the series said so. The Primal source Sun is an actual astrophysical star that provides magic relating to life, heat and fire while the Primal source Star provides magic boundless and timeless as the Cosmos is, and more focus on divination and seeing into the beyond
Is there is dark there has to be light A theory that has been going around is that Callum will be the first Human Light mage, Light magic is essentially having a connection to all the other 6 primal sources and once connected to all six a new arcanum will be in practice for light magic will have one be in harmony with all creation and be allowed to use/influence it without corrupting/having domination of it essentially dark is to forcefully take then use magic from creatures, light magic is growing a connection to creation its self becoming one with it. The elf Aaravos whether he is dark or light mage it is stated he mastered all 6 sources either through the use of dark or light magic(most likely dark since well have you seen him in the mirror talking yet? Also he was on the side of the elves but why trap him in a mirror unless he has something to do with dark magic, remember he is said to be worst then death) Let me know your thoughts
That's really interesting actually. I feel like it might exist. Dark magic is ever so prevalent in this universe so it makes sense that it's polar opposite would exist as well. How this will come about? Who knows. But interesting theory nonetheless. Thanks for sharing
RohaniBoy your welcome, I have more theories on this series but I’ll just wait till I see more of it until I share, also to point out I believe Callum May have already used it through the use of the sky primal, but due that was just one source created by a connection until he connects to all 6 the 7th one will be unlocked this light magic, dark magic is just like the show says a short cut(it does have limits as you need to steal a magical creature with a specific source, and that its side effects may corrupt your soul as it is doing to the others) light magic would be the hardest Source to get since you would have to be Harmonious with creation it’s and needs to literally build a connection like a man praying to a Creator(thou that is what Gandalf would say)
RohaniBoy just one question Aaravos does he control the other r6 through light or dark magic? I assuming dark since well look at the ritual he uses in the mirror
As we have seen in the end credits of an episode, it's not neccessary for a creature to die, so dark magic can be cast. As long as you get a part of it, you can do it.
Honestly i think dark magic is given a bad rep all magic comes with a price u gotta make sacrifices like gwen or and body using mana to summon life energy the basic essence of magic and the magical creature dont have to worry cause they have power. Its power and it only matters on how its used but it comes with a price
New sub here! I'd love to see you talk about Callum and Ezran's characters and where you see their arcs going, I'm loving all your analyses so far. I think at this point Dark Magic is inherently "evil" it's just made to look that way. The magic itself isn't evil, the users can be. Aaravos and the whole mirror thing (which I forgot to comment on that video T-T sowwie) leads me to think he may not be the end-game big bad. He's a big bad sure, but not the complete end game. Perhaps I'm not fully convinced yet. I think the first person who used Dark Magic will be the end game big bad but perhaps I'm misreading the room. Aaravos is using Viren to leave the mysterious realm, that much I can see happening. My biggest gripe is that I'm getting Avatar vibes from Callum - he look's like he's about to master all the sources and become the balancing key between the worlds (which storywise fits. Him connecting to the sources, Ezran becoming King and having a connection to the Dragon Prince seems like fair trade) but I don't want him to? I'm heavily conflicted... Sorry for the wall of text!
No worries. Walls of text are welcome here! Thanks for your thoughts. Aaravos has that demenor but he doesn't show signs of being the over arching villains yet. As you said. He's definitely plotting something and I want to see what that is. Good idea as well. I have one or two videos planned for now but afterwards I'd love to make some discussing the progression of Callum and Ezran. Thanks for the sub! More content coming in the future.
the other thing is i think that the dark magic slowly corrupts the user, not just physically as Viren and Claudia look different but i think that its a moral decent. Its easy using dead things to cast it and the preserved magic in animal parts, but those don't give you as much power as a living creature. It reminds me of blood magic in dragon age, people fall back on it as a crutch because its easier and quicker and more powerful, even with the cost it comes with, as it frequently causes demonic possession.
You should have mentioned how it is possible for humans to gain an arcanum via enlightenment and therefore learn primal magic without a primal stone. Or will that be for a future video?
@@RohaniBoy Also I should say that there was something in The Dragon Prince that puzzled me for a while. They say describe an arcanum as the understanding of a primal source and magical creatures are born with it. The question that puzzled me was: how can a creature be born understanding something? Then I realized that for magical creatures the understanding is an instinct that they are born with. Also there are six different types of elf each type corresponding to one of the types of primal magic, therefore not all elves are born with the moon arcanum that's only moonshadow elves.
Very true. Nicely pointed out. That instinct is what these creatures are born with. And yeah moonshadow elves are the ones connected to the moon arcanum. My bad if I said something different.
Do you think you could do a discussion video on how Callum managed to cast magic without a Primal Stone near the end of season 2. Because the fact that a human like him could do such a thing changes a lot since it was believed that humans could not use Primal Magic but yet he did.
I did do something kind of like that. That video was my 'Journey into the mind' video. But maybe in future I will make one specifically on Callums feat.
@@RohaniBoy Please do. Because like I said the fact Callum can changes everything for humans. Also, if I may I have a theory on how Callum can cast magic without the Primal Stone. In the dream when he was talking to his mother she said something about how to know something you must feel it with your head, hand, and heart. I believe this might be the secret for humans to gain the ability to use magic. Because unlike with the Eleve where using Primal Magic is as natural as breathing for humans they must learn about the Primal Sources on a mental, physical, and spiritual level to cast magic from that primal source. The fact that Aaravos a Star Touched Elf can use all the Primal Sources supports this theory since it hasn't been explained if other Elves can use magic outside of their Archanum so far Aaravos is the only one we currently know of.
I kinda have my own take on Dark Magic and how Humans harness it? Yes in The Dragon Prince Humans are not born with the Arcanums naturally and thus cannot use magic, so a 1000 years ago we see in the opening sequence of season 1 episode 1 a human mage who discovered a method to attain magical powers by draining it from magical creatures and thus Dark Magic was born and the rest as they say is history, Now bringing matters up to current events we've seen Lord Viren who is obviously the strongest Dark Mage in the Human kingdoms use his powers many times and when he casts a stronger spell it changes his apprearance to that of a ghoul or zombie and in order to regain his normal human appearance he needs to go to his secret little glowing butterfly stash and absorb the energy from one to return to normal, now you suggested in this Video that it is the residual effects of channelling the dark magic that causes the physical changes in the individual who uses it? That may be the case but then why does Viren need to use a glowing butterfly to return to his normal complexion when surely he would return to normal after the residual dark magic effects wore off naturally? I think that casting Dark Magic uses up more than just the Magical creature energy I think it also drains part of the humans "Life Force" and that is what causes the physical changes and in order to reverse them you need to replace the lost life force energy from another and I'm guessing that's what the glowing butterflies are full of, further evidence of this theory can be seen when Claudia casts the Healing spell on Soren after draining the life energy out of the Deer? Directly after casting this powerful spell part of her hair turned white as a result suggesting she burnt through a little of her life force in the process? Still I think the real proof of the pudding will come early in season 3 when we next see Viren in prison as he was trying to use a butterfly just before the palace guards arrived to arrest him and he was fairly draw out after that fight with no chance to recovery so we'll just have to wait and see 😉
Nice take on it. I reckon you are right about the life force thing. It seems that when you use Dark magic you are drained of your own life a bit. Hence the butterflies. S3 will be the one to answer these questions
@@RohaniBoy well I came up with another alternative cost to using dark magic and that is it shortens your life expectancy when you use it, hardly at all for simpler spells but it can take years off your life if you cast a really powerful spell and it leaves you looking like a walking corpse
Given everything, we know about Dark Magic I think Dark Magic is like a drug that messes with the users' mind and morals and as well as some physical effect not sure what the physical could be biased the visual look Virein as undergone and Cladia is undergoing.
@@Painfulldarksoul remember the splicers from BioShock? They used ADAM; a goop that temporarily granted them powers by messing with their own DNA. These once normal, powerless people literally became addicted to power and eventually permanently altered themselves into psychotic mutants who only seem to feel sane or normal when they have more ADAM which was the cause of the problem in the first place
Dark Magic uses seems to be like a kind sponge or leech. Soaking up energy and shooting it out. While some of it stays within the user, like a lingering residue, holding in the energy within for too long seems to hurts them. Like Callum using magic not of his focus. But he still can access the Sky Arcanum. Which begs the question, Why are humans born with such a weak connection to primal sources? Pretty sure Dark Magic was taught to mankind by a certain helpful Star Elf.
I believe elves and dragons belittle humans because they weren’t born with an arcanum thus humans thought themselves lesser beings and never saw the potential they had to learn magic were they themselves saw weakness aaravos saw potential and to drive that out he taught them dark magic and humans being who we are took the short cut being dark magic instead of learning magic the hard way like callum the elves and dragons thinking humans lesser beings drove them out of Zadia without a second chance and trapped aaravos in the mirror as punishment without knowing how humans felt .
Is it possible that Viren is the first mage because he has the same staff as him and has some connection to Avaroos and many people think he gave the humans dark magic. If this is the case then it explains how disformed he is and why he has to use a glamour.
The issue comes when people kill creatures for unnecessary stuff like making their foot taste better or to dye their hair. I don't know if the council or dark mages is canon, but I love how they view dark magic in the fanfiction I have read.
RohaniBoy I understand the lore a bit better now but I also heard that some of the text about the star touched elf in the mirror has hints on how he’s “helped” humans find their potential
I really hope they admit dark magic isn't so bad, people already hunt animals and if killing one ancient being saved thousands than I say go for it. I don't care if it is intelligent or not, they could have literally hunted the head fire elf for the spell and I wouldn't care if it saves thousands. Honestly, as long as they don't hunt something to extinction specifically to make a weapon I don't see anything different than how we normally do things. Though we still hunt things to extinction anyway so it's kind of a moot point. Plus if anyone feels bad for the animals just remember most animals are horrid beasts with no redeeming value. ducks are necrophile rapists, dolphins kill there own young, Zebras do the same and literally, rape there females to abort the pregnancies if the father is a weaker male, hippos are insane territorial killers that destroy any animal near them and kill 5 times as many people as lions. My point is that we kill most of these anyway so why not gain magical powers from them?
Very true. But the way I see it is the humanity of it. It's not like we slaughter these animals (although some still do) we try to humanly kill them to get their meat and such. Dark magic seems like murdering the animals to benefit one's self. I believe it can be used for good but as we've seen it also can be used for bad. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens in the future aye.
In season 3, it's revealed that dirt in the elven lands has magic in it, even though dirt in the human lands doesn't. Apparently, a long-term side effect of using dark magic is that it reduces the amount of magical energy around you.

Is it possible that Viren is the first mage because he has the same staff as him and has some connection to Avaroos and many people think he gave the humans dark magic. If this is the case then it explains how disformed he is and why he has to use a glamour.
That could be a possibility. Viren is clearly very experienced. But I wonder how exactly he aquired the staff in the first place
Lord viren discovered dark magic. Thats him
No, that wasn't him.
The guy from the flashbacks is called Xiran. He is a different guy.
when i subbed you hit 500
I know this is a weird theory and no one probably thought of it, but here me out... LIGHT MAGIC!
I have searched, and it appears that this school / type of magic does not exist in this show.
The closest thing is the sun stone healing corruption.
In reality,
Its no different to eating meat
We use the nutirents to power ourselves
The issue comes when people kill creatures for unnecessary stuff like making their foot taste better or to dye their hair.
I don't know if the council or dark mages is canon, but I love how they view dark magic in the fanfiction I have read.
Was Dark Magic the reason Lord Viren became a power hungry asshole?
Nice
😍
RohaniBoy I understand the lore a bit better now but I also heard that some of the text about the star touched elf in the mirror has hints on how he’s “helped” humans find their potential
Yeah I heard about that aye. Aaravos and startouch elfs are such a mystery and I hope S3 tills in the blanks we have
I don't get it... Some of your vids get hella views but people don't stay and sub? Lame this channel is dope ❤️
Thank you so much 😍.
And yeah it's strange how youtube works and people subbing and such. Hopefully we continue on this road to 1000 subs!
This video explains nothing it just states the obvious things shown in the series.
I agree.
In season 3, it's revealed that dirt in the elven lands has magic in it, even though dirt in the human lands doesn't. Apparently, a long-term side effect of using dark magic is that it reduces the amount of magical energy around you.
I thought that that land nacked magic before the humans were banished.
