Finally a show where starting a romantic relationship isn't the finish line but the actual beginning of romance.
Not only that, but there is so much chemistry between them. It feels natural and sweet, always putting a smile on my face.
Ditto and amen to that my friends 😌🤗.
If I had to pick the best possible way a relationship in a show has to be done, I can now just point people towards The Dragon Prince and say: "Hey, go watch that show!"
And dude, you are so right. I love that it is the beginning of a show (so to speak?). Like, it feels like the beginning because of how short the seasons are but it's nice to actually SEE a relationship. Not the beginning and start of it.
Honestly, I want more shows/movies where they show the history, go through the present, and then when the show "ends" (final season, ect...) make another season showing where everyone is and how "a happy ever after" life is lead. Most everything ends up in the fairy tale end of everything being ok now. But we, the viewer/reader, gets cut off and only see the happy ending. I kind of want to see a chill life after everything ends. Like, an overview of a show but through the characters perspectives ya know?

I don't want Rayllum to have an unhealthy relationship for the sake of drama, but to see them in a healthy relationship with realistic conflicts would not only be refreshing, but really important for the younger viewers of the show. People don't have many healthy relationships in media to look up to, and that's especially true for young people. Rayllum is a unique opportunity to show what a healthy relationship between teenagers looks like, the kinds of challenges they can expect, and how to overcome them.
I'd personally love to see TDP explore the challenges of being an interracial couple. They can be external challenges like being unable to do PDA for fear of ridicule or even violence, or one person in the couple being treated with respect while the other is ignored or disrespected, or disapproving friends and family (Runaan and Rayla's parents I can see having a major problem with Callum). I also want to see internal issues like clashing cultural boundaries and expectations regarding romance and relationships, or the internalised prejudices of one or more in the couple coming to light. That would be incredibly realistic for Rayllum and it's something I've never seen explored much in media. It would also force us to confront the prejudices we might have towards the people we care about and how we might unintentionally upset them.
I'm also kinda hoping that Rayla tries to find her parents' coins and free them, which is how she discovers that Viren is alive. To get revenge on her for "killing" him, he traps her in a coin and then it's up to Callum to rescue her and her family. That would be a suspenseful angst plot right there driven by Rayllum's existing relationship, and then Callum would be forced to confront Rayllum's parents who have all had nasty encounters with humans. They all know his stepfather killed Avizandum and was close to their captor. And then there's the whole tension between Runaan and Callum because Runaan killed his stepfather. There's so much potential!
Cora Maria i really hope they dont just forget the hatred between humans and elves and everyone is just ok with them being togethar. I want to see them struggle with their relationship between the two races, but stay together because they love each other.
@@emilioochoa2862 The creators said that future seasons will be focusing on just how hard reconciliation will be and how deep the scars of war run so chances are Rayllum will help highlight those deeply ingrained prejudices.
Tbh, i dont think Runaan killed Harrow. Ive been a firm believer that Viren did it before the assassins could due to how tense the situation was at the time. Harrow didnt want to take the easy way out and wanted to end the cycle of revenge.
Viren however wanted war to happen. Can only speculate now but hopefully the future seasons will build on it.

The whole story just felt so fluent so natural my only regret is that it only has nine episodes per season 😔
We get a new "season" roughly every 6 months, the exception being 4, but I read somewhere that the delay is due to covid, so i find it easier to think of them as 1/3 seasons. We get a full season every year and a half, and the creators are simply rolling them out as they make them. I realize that this doesnt make much sense from several angles, but it helps me keep interest in the show over its long breaks

Rayla and Callum have amazing chemistry
Im going to be mad if callum and rayla break up, for the simple fact that its so cliche. So many other shows break up perfectly healthy couples for no reason, and it would seem really flawed. There are so many more opportunities for the show if they keep them together than if they dont.
With the Avatar, They are kids, Tweens at least by the end of the show made sense. With the Dragon Prince, They are teens and more open than kids would be. I think it was just right. Three seasons doesn't make it feel forced than say if they hooked up in season one.

Loved your analyses. I saw many people criticizing their relationship cause it was built up so fast but people forget they're teenagers and, to top it all off, going through life and death situations almost daily. Honestly I think me as a teenager would do the same lol

I agree however I never felt it was rushed at all.
You already see the first steps in litteraly s2e1 when Callum writes to King Harrow describing Raylla. Then throughout the season you see Raylla supporting him and growing closer ultimatly culminating in the "You cant leave you mean too much to me". Furthermore removing Essra from the trio at the end of s2 means they only have each other going forward which naturally spark the fire between them and made them come together.
By far one of the strongest romances I've seen. Especially when compared to ATLA which is one of the weaker aspect of that great show

Hey, if Tangled the series can explore Eugene and Rapunzel’s relationship long after they’ve gotten together, who’s to say the same can’t be done in Dragon Prince? Just because it’s not often seen in animated series doesn’t mean it can’t be done
Well I think that we will see Callum struggle with more consequences of using dark magic (creators actually confirmed it!) and it will probably have some kind of impact on Rayla

Maybe nightmares or the creatures of Xedia will feel the dark magic and it will make it difficult for the people of Xedia accept the relationship, on top of being one of two different races in a time of extrem xenophobia.
I don't want it to come to that, but at the same time we don't need a perfect relationship like a Disney princess, that is what makes people start to hate series, and this has such good potential, it would be sad if the creators wasted it, and if you think about it, their relationship can make or break the series, since now that its into the light, the show will be more focused on it, and the events have to match them, so I think that if there is no hardships to their relationship, then the show loses that realness and dramatic affect it used to have, and if it loses it, there is no point in continuing
hey if voltron had a 7 season run on netflix i believe that the dragon prince will.
It also works better than voltron imo. Even if they ever went that route (poor lance), the fact that their relationship has been established means there would be good impact.

MisterPudd same. Voltron had potential but that crashed and burned early on. I don’t know why any company would want to be associated with that, but I suppose they did the right thing considering how wildly popular She-Ra was.

What makes Rayllum so great is that is it challenges the usual story of main characters hooking up in the last minute of the show where interpretations of the relationship will be up in the air. With Rayllum happening early, it will set whole new expectations within not only the external obstacles but also how the relationship will affect their respective character development.
unexpected ? maybe in season 1 but by the time season 2 was ending it was a huge possibility, Rayllum was a relief to be honest, even without an actual romantic ''necessity''

The Dragon Prince is my favorite series in netflix...
Same here, was pretty unsure about the show after s1, sure it was good but it didnt resonate with me that much. So much so that I even skipped s2 when it released. Then s3 came out and there were a lot of people talking about it and I was bored so thought fuck it. Lets give it another try.
Ended up binging s2 and s3 in one single day
Rayllum matters because it helped the xadians and humans believe in peace, friendship, and love between the two
I appreciate that they already had a fight in season 3, as short lived as it was. They've grown very close and care a lot about each other, but there's still a lot more about each other and themselves they need to and will learn about. It's not even a case of knowledge either, but how to deal with them when they're upset (which we've seen Callum tries to do but can't handle until she opens up) or when to get involved or stay back, or their priorities. These things in and of itself are enough to create a dramatic, but healthy and engaging relationship
If Netflix even dared to cancel The Dragon Prince there will be rioting in the streets

I expected this & I truly love it ^^. I hope the show goes all out on the seasons. Netflix please! Renew the show for a 4th season. Also remember to give the show a thumbs up!
I really like Rayllum. It's cool that the show originally set up Callum to be with Claudia before Callum changed his mind. It's more realistic that way and I think the large displays of feelings between both characters feels like a natural conclusion to a long build up of growing affection

I am relatively new to The Dragon Prince; haven't seen a full single episode in fact. I had heard about it from my brother but didn't have the access to follow up on it. But... it wasn't until recently that videos showing "Rayllum" started appearing on UA-cam, and as a sucker for romance, I took a look. The more I looked into it these small bits of a new world, the more interested I became.
So when I came across your video I once again became curious, as your title asked some of the very questions I pondered myself. You show yourself well informed and experienced with this particular thematic form. I can say that I have come away greatly enlightened.
Please except my thanks. I, also, wish to see where "Rayllum's" story will go.

I think one of their major struggles will be at how to deal with all prejudice from elves towards Callum and humans towards Rayla.
I hope we don’t face a major angst with them because that would deflect the focus on the main goal and turn the show into a tumblr multi chapter fanfic that only focus in relationships and burns the world around characters. Let’s see what will happen, I hope it goes to a Hiccstrid direction.

They're teenagers, I'm pretty sure everybody remembers what it's like to be a teen for those who are former teens I'm pretty sure you all understand what I'm trying to say, I would try to put it into better words but I can't remember what words to use
One word actually: hormones
Teenagers or not, 3/4 dates in two weeks are more than enough to start a relationship in real life even without life-threatening sitations and hormones.
Rayllum is important because it shows that humans and elfs an have peace and even love, I really do hope that we here impotent from the other humans and elfs
Callum wont have to be forced into using dark magic again and heres why.
Dark magic is like steroids for an athlete. It juices yer system up and you reach yer end goal faster but ironically you never reach yer true potential from it.
The reason humans are so susceptible to it and cant communicate with the other arcana is because it feeds off the evil in human hearts. Callum however was able to face his demons literally and because he did, he unlocked his true potential.
He doesnt need the dark magic now as a shortcut because he already feels the other arcana. In the same sense, because viren and claudia have over used it so much, they have been cut off from the arcana for good.
He cant lose his magic now because the other arcana arent consuming things to exist. They are all around the place even in the human realm.
He can connect to them anytime he needs to. In a sense, hes become a full resident of xadia just like the elves.
However im sure there are consequences for him using dark magic. Well just have to wait and see.
I also wanna point out that in lux when amaya was to be tested, the light deemed her pure and free from corruption so we know dark magic isnt simply good and evil.
Maybe it feeds off their life force and slowly turns them into something not human. Who knows, maybe callum will be the first mage in history who will be able to combine dark and the other arcanas into a new source of power which could be used by everyone thus ending all conflicts.

Not only that, but you got to understand that there is social tensions between the elves and the humans. Like Callum says sarcastically in the show: The World is just not ready for what we have. And he’s not wrong. The elves and the humans might not accept their love and I would really like to see what they do with that. Cause they love each other, but you don’t want to be casted out of your own species for your intimate relationship. I would really like to see how the characters react to all this and what you think about it Josh.
Honestly, if they were going to do the whole romantic subplot, this is exactly where it would be. Narratively speaking.
I'm glad I found this video - thankyou for putting into words what I've always thought about rayllum! There's definitely so much potential in this relationship, and can't wait to see what the TDP crew will do with it:-)

well... They wouldn't be welcome in each others' homes. So yeah, they're going to move in together out of necessity. But I don't think they'll be doing anything more intimate than kissing for a while. In real life teenagers face immense social pressures to be intimate, but Callum and Rayla don't have that: and besides, there are still bad guys to find. They'll be busy.
that's why I never understood the Callum Claudia ship, because they are far less supportive to one another, Claudia doesn't make Callum a better person, Rayla does, Claudia even go as far as betraying him, something I would hardly see Rayla do
To quote a line I read from a book years ago but has stuck with me for years.
“You were the woman I loved as a boy. She was the woman I loved as a man.”
I think this sums it up perfectly. Rayla inspired Callum to be a better person, a hero just like herself, and he in turn inspired her to open up and be proud of her acts of kindness and selflessness even if it doesn’t align with her culture’s ways, and it did both of them a lot of good. So, yeah. Rayllum for the win.
I don't like Claudia all that much, no offense to her fans but the decisions she makes are ridiculous and it annoys me that shes so in denial about Viren. I'm glad Callum got over how she betrayed him there was no reason for him to continue on that crush. Sorens character development was great this season but Claudia is disappointing to see.
Arhkeid I kinda get why Callum had a crush on her, she is funny, pretty and like magic stuff (basically, she is his pixie dream girl). But Claudia suddenly kiss him was like huh???
@@gabriellacardosopaiva417 yeah maybe it's just me but Claudia never seamed "in love" or really into Callum, she seamed to like him but not so much more to me, and it makes me wonder if in future seasons they will touch on her reaction to Rayllum, if it is something that will make her mad (and become even more a vilain), or if she will not care at all...
In the final season in the final episode there should be a ending where the characters are grown up and there is a wedding of Callum and Rayla where they have an elf son named Hermose and a human daughter named Salatian.
They are healthy, lovely, and have chemistry. I hope nothing happens to this perfect ship during the next season if we get one.

@Plumbob Dragon I don't think a lot of this really applies. At least amongst the races, everyone seems pretty progressive. It's the war between the elves and humans that really creates divide, but even then, I don't think everyone's heart is in the war. Nyx, for example, an Elf, was fine with Raylum being a thing.
There was a reddit post about someone translating her sign language and apparantly according to them the comment she made after the elf tried to claim she was her prisoner not her friend was that she found her cute, but wouldn't admit it yet.

Did the producers say anything about sticking to the 9 episode format? Will they make more than 9? (I hope).
When the gang finds out that Dark Magic was used to make the humans equal to magical beings would that make it more acceptable to them? To us? (Personally for me yes).
The reasoning for Pro Dark: Similar to hunting and harvesting animals we take their lives in order to sustain ours (ie. Magma Titan core trades 1 life to save millions). Though it may look gruesome, taking life always is. The elves and dragons are no different for killing humans (several probably since Sol Regem wanted to BURN A TOWN FULL OF CHILDREN!)
The reason for Anti Dark: It's evil. It corrupts the user. It steals life. (limited for now since it's still not fleshed out). Dark Magic is unnatural and can be an allegory for human industrialization and deforestation/animal cruelty.
Compromise Theory: Like today we have Parks and Conservation laws for endangered animals. Is it perfect? Heck no! But it keeps those whose population is waning safer and the hunters can still hunt in Open Season if they're moral. Immoral would be Poachers. Scummy Thrill Seekers with no regard for nature.
I felt it was more natural when they were friends.
Nice video! I found the show slightly clunky in the first couple episodes (which is pretty common with most shows) but it improved quickly. I basically shipped Callum and Rayla from the start because I just tend to do that, but I wouldn’t have been upset if they just remained close, loyal friends, because that’s also a great thing to see. Once they did get together, oh man the feels! I wanna see the show portray how their relationship is viewed by society in general. While those around them are very much for it, I’m sure there will be those against it due to centuries of tension between humans and elves. I can see that causing trouble in their relationship, though not enough to break them apart.

For all the people that say that this relationship developed too quickly, I feel you just haven't been in that sort of situation before where you end up spending nearly all your time with that person. For me I think this relationship is actually quite realistic as I have been through something similar. When I was 16 I went on an overseas school trip and I hardly knew anyone as none of my friends went on this trip so I ended up spending a lot of time with this girl that I hardly knew before the trip (TBH I originally thought I wouldn't really get along with her at all) but after spending everyday with each other we ended really liking each and ended up dating by the end of the two weeks. In the end we did break up after a while due to me moving and you know how long distance relationships are especially in high school, but that's not the point I am trying to make my point is there is no time limit on how quickly a romantic relationship can develop sometimes it just feels right and that is what I see from this relationship between Callum & Rayla.

Maybe not but that still doesn't mean Callum won't be influenced by Dark Magic. From Star Wars Yoda had a saying "Once you start down the dark path forever will it dominate your life". Both Viren and Claudia's poor and unethical choices have been the result of Dark magic messing with their thinking. For Callum it might be a subtle change in thought but that change could eventually make a terrible difference.

Well, if the show does get canceled after season 3 there is always graphic novels and books to look forward to.
A little bit of advice: try to keep your eyes at the center of the recording and keep your cam at the same height level. Being able to look up your nostrils is a bit distracting, and you probably don't want to appear as if you're looking down on the viewer. It would also help if you took a little bit more distance from the camera, but I can understand if the microphone prohibits that. Just consider how you'll be seen. You got a lot of stuff going on with the hat and the shoulder panda, awkward camera angles shouldn't distract from that.

Also for everyone saying it's going too fast: Look at the episode length, look at the season length, and tell me how much time they "have" to actually make Rayllum good? They did amazing! Like, whoever they hired to do Rayllum should write every relationship in shows now.

The directors answered that question. They said that they let the story and it's characters drive the situations. In this case, they were alone by themselves and they already had the romantic tensions so it just came out. If Ez was there it most likely wouldn't have happened. Also, I feel that they might throw in a Claudia wrench in the relationship with 4 more seasons still on the way. Plenty of time for that drama.

I thought he was going to talk about what it meant inside the show like politically and public opinion and that kind of thing
I had these theories in the shower one day:
Theory 1: Everyone is worried about Rayla dying, but what about Ezran? With those shadow assassin things Viren sent after the other kingdoms, Ezran is at risk because Viren is alive and Viren has the support of Claudia. Viren might kill Ezran for the throne like how he tried to become king when Ezran was in the dungeon. I also have this theory where Viren killed Harrow. I just had that feeling in my gut ever since Harrow's death.
Theory 2: Rayla's parents are still alive. Think about it, Rayla's parents were most likely sucked into coins like Runaan *or however you spell his name*
And in Season 3 episode 3, we see that Runaan's flower thing is still barely floating. Rayla's parents must still be alive. Like when Callum did the spell to reveal what happened before like what Lujane did. *sorry for my spelling* The faces were more detailed. How? BECAUSE RAYLA'S PARENTS ARE STILL ALIVE. When Lujane did the spell, the faces on the elves were not as detailed as when Callum did the spell. Note: Lujane said long ago, i think maybe when Xadia was still one land. Which means that all those Elves are probably dead by now. I heard this other theory on Theory Pop about the same thing but it was just Callum using a moon opal.
The best theories are born in a shower
I think kataang is developed in a good and matured way from the katara's side (just like the rayla and callum) and not like aang's childish view about katara as a person whom he first saw after 100 years, katara choose aang due to her character arc in the show . Katara always want to protect others as her mother gave her life to protect her , she want to protect anyone whoever she can (like aang ,sokka, toph and even the village in Jang Hui River in the fire nation ) she is always ready to care for anyone and did not made them feel sad and tries to give them her love like a mother as she had lost it after her mother died and her father left.She carries this burden in her life that she was conflict when confront her father she shows her worries that how much she missed his love.And also katara admire the person who had gone through the same kind of pain like her. But her views about the world that took her parents away changes as the series progresses. She was also conflicted about aang during throughout show that he is just her friend who need her care or more than that .We can see that she only sees jet as a true boyfriend in the show (other than aang,she feels sorry for zuko and accept him as the show progresses but she did have the romantic feeling about zuko).Jet is so much like katara , he lost his parent to the fire nation like her ,he protect the people who follows him .Katara admires him at her first sight even considers him has a boyfriend(when sokka says that her boyfriend is messed up she did not react as she did when sokka said aang as her boyfriend in episode the avatar returns).She wants a person in who she sees herself more than her.Since her views changed in the progress of the show that she opens up with her father about her issues with her father and she faces the man who killed her mother her ideas about the love and world is not the way she thinks but she also have some wrong ideas about the way she thinks changes about protecting other with dominating and forcing them (like jet) ,choosing her duty before her loved ones (like hakoda when aang asks about their relationship in the ember island players) and to let go of the anger to the one responsible for the death of her mother, but to make her proud by living with her love for other like her mother . And here we need to see about aang in katara's life, aang was not like jet or zuko who always shows his greatest loss in his life and he was the only person she first sees in a romantic way (not like jet with her views ) in the episode headband ,the fortuneteller she was confused what aang was meant to her, and in the show her confusions grows with aang and not love but it does not say that she did not have feelings for him but she did not know what to do with him.Her relationship between aang grows closer in the first half of the 3rd season.But in the second half of the 3rd season again she was placed is a diffucult position that aang who support her idea once(in helping the villagers of village in Jang Hui River but does not accept her idea of taking revenge on the person who killed her mother (which is much more stronger emotional idea) he rejects her idea and opposes her.When she comes back to aang we know that she cannot take his life the man who killed her mother putting her in position that whether her idea of not doing so is weakness or strength, also makes her question about aang idea of forgiveness seem to be both as a sign of weakness and strenght .This idea of aang not killing the firelord made everyone to laugh but she is the one who truely understands it because of her experience .She does not actively support his idea but she do not either truly rejects it .And Finally when he succeeds she understands that no one is better for her than Aang(both romantic and ideological ) This doesn't mean that i hate zutara , zutara could have happen if zuko joined team avatar in the crossroads of destiny but it would have made zuko redemption arc weaker and i don't want zuko redemption arc to compensate for zutara .

Callum will definitely have a dilemma on his hands come season 4. Go home with Ezran or stay in Xadia to learn more magic? It's possible he could teach himself using books in the Katolis library or from Viren's secret lab. But it's not the same as having an actual teacher.
I hope Callum becomes the most powerful and wise wizard ever, and that he and Rayla become the founders of a lineage as powerful, fair and brave as that of the kings of the Dúnedain, healers like Elrond :D, fighting Dark Magic until the end of the world.
Honestly I think rayllum was at a good time and it was Nice to not have to wait so many seasons however if they had gotten together in season one or two it would’ve been too soon

Remember when Zuko had to choose between fighting with Azula or fighting with Aang and his friends?What if we see that in season four? What if Rayla’s destiny and Callum’s destiny cross? What if Rayla rediscovers what it would mean to kill a human? Would she finally be allowed to live in the elven kingdom? Remember that she is still banished- remember how sad she was when Callum pointed out that all the faces of her people were not there. I want a season 4!!!!! The best part is that they so easily _could_ have dragged their relationship out till the end, but didn’t. They EASILY could have done the annoying cliche ‘reset’ after Rayla kissed him that you see in SO many other shows (usually anime) where, even after a clear indication of romantic interest, the characters wuss out and pretend it didn’t happen so that they can “keep things the way they are” (gag me). Rayla even did the “we’ll never speak of this again!” thing. But no, Callum, like an actual thinking human being, thought and realized, “hey, if she’s into me too, then I should have a shot” then later kissed her, almost wussed out, but she reciprocates when realizing that the feelings are mutual. A simple logical progression of actions leading into a healthy relationship without any contrivances or melodrama. *chef’s kiss
I'm personally not that invested in Rayllum, but if they're gonna do it it's better to give it more development than wait until the end

Would hope the writers did make this happen so soon only because of fan shipping...that doesn't tend to end so well for how long people still watch or talk about the show after the run is finished. While I agree prolonging the "Will they or Won't they" question can be unreasonably dragged out to long... but doing too soon just feels forced and this is what it feels like. Not much was there to honestly say....other than its kinda of hard to feel surprised at this end result...that the story had enough to say that this is was where it was heading, just not hard to guess and that one outburst. Yes this two were bonding over their common goals and relaying on each other but that doesn't always to romance....at least not that quick. Aang and Katara worked because they focused more on the quest than on their own personal issues other then a few moments here and there, and that was enough that it felt natural when the two finally hocked up at the end....here it just feels forced.....but to each his/her or what ever gender...own.
and their scenes in the third season weren't bad at all.
yeah i agree, they could've spent at least another season developing this better, then again the pacing of this entire season felt really rushed. and besides the rayla x callum stuff (and regardless of the pacing i enjoyed their relationship more than aang and katara's tbh), i really wish we got a better explanation as to why ezran just left the throne after like a day he came back to katolis and why viren was the one that got back into power as fast as he did after getting imprisoned cause that felt underwhelming. and they could've done a lot more world building in xadia which was the most disappointing part of this season, but oh well, it was still good though i enjoyed it a lot

I still don't know why Tuor was allowed to be an immortal, and live with Idril Celebrindal, but Tuor could never return to the mortal lands of Middle Earth, a restriction similar to that of Oisín in the irish mythology.
