16 years after, I am revisiting my favorite game and talk about all the aspects that made it what it is.

I was raised on gothic series
I played gothic 1 and 2 as a kid for whole 6 years. And I am obsessed with it still. I try to make skyrim like gothic, I look for something like gothic. I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!! FOREVER!!!! I roleplayed this game. Its was my life. :D
I played around in it when i was 3, been completing it every year ever since. Gothic is a cult classic in my country and the modding scene is more active then ever before. Oh yeah and they're making a remake of it. This community is great and the ammount of mods is endless, GOTHIC IS A WAY OF LIFE.

I played it young and beat both fairly at first and then started to explore more after a while
Gothic 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time. I replayed both games 10+ times and i will continue to do so until the day that i die. Its gamedesign in perfection, a craft without any substancial flaw but with things accomplished that were not repeated by any game ever made up until today, 15 years later.

Would you recommend this RPG over Fallout 3,4 ? Is this still playable in 2019 ?
@@journey4109 Ofcourse it is still playable and I would recommend them because they are different. Fallout 4 is hot garbage, please don't mention that game, it is the most dumbed down version of Fallout ever. Gothic 1 works on windows 10 with modern rigs but you should get some patches to make the game more stable. Also there are DX11 renders for both gothic 1 and gothic 2, to be honest, they make the game look much better. I would 100% recommend you play them in order (althought I personally found Gothic 2: Night of the Raven to be much much more satisfying than Gothic 1) because story and because nostalgia feelings in Gothic 2 (there will be many). Don't mod the games, first play them Vanilla to enjoy what PB did. If you want you can also play gothic 3 after that, it is a much more commercial RPG (more user friendly if you ask me) but you MUST and I emphasise this MUST install Community Patch for Gothic 3 (and optional there are some quest packs that expand and add some new quests without fucking up the core game). Gothic series is and will forever be leagues ahead of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls, mostly because Bethesda games are made with the assumption that the player is a brainless dullard that needs constant pushes and nudges (or blatant tunnel vision) or he won't get the game, Gothic series does not have this flaw. The only good Elder Scrolls game I ever played was Morrowind. Oblivion and Skyrim are just plain bad game design.
@@journey4109 only the first 2 and the new chronicles of myrtana mod on steam. Those are great and still hold up to this day. 3 is one of if not the worst rpgs ive ever played
@@bicualexandru246 Yes, I still have a plan to immerse into Gothic series. Somehow I've played Witcher 1 a few years ago. It's always been strange reason to postpone playing Gothic. Hmm, I've had serious interest to FPS, horrors, rpg's all together.

I played both Gothic 1 and Morrowind around the same time back in 2001. I liked both but Morrowind didn't even come close to Gothic in terms of realism. I played Gothic recently and it still holds up. I can't even begin to think about playing Morrowind nowadays without puking.
Yepp Gothic 1 has fantastic realism, and yet Morrowind is up there wirh it for me for other features and trades. 🤗

@@Khalil4Favorites good question, the one that annoyed me the most was 100% Risen 2 I really kinda liked Risen 1, had that Gothic 2 feeling about it.

funny is the fact it's a 15years old game and no game is even close with the immersion this game have... the most realistic rpg medieval game ever!!!!!

. I am from Romania and first played Gothic 1 in about 2003 as it was included as a full game in a games magazine called "Level". I was 12 at the time. It was love at first sight for me continuing with Gothic 2, Night of the Raven and of course Gothic 3 and even Forsaken Gods. I hope you keep up the good work and keep creating interesting video content.

Sure, as soon as I get it to work on Win 10.
Get the Systempack, makes the game work mostly flawlessly in modern rigs, also allows mods.
Gothic 2 would need an hour at least with 40 minutes to that for the expansion.
I have problems with gothic 1 on wondows 10, and for me gothic 2 works good on the same laptop :)
A very in-depth and precise review!
If anyone is looking for a challenging and immersive old school RPG with a good story and (truly) unique setting, this game is definitely worth the money (even as old as this game is). If you care only about the graphics and being superhuman from start of the game - this game is not for you. It is simple as that.

Yes, brother, all the 1990s kids growing up in Romania, especially in the cities, played Gothic and still cherish it. So, that would explain why people between 25-35 years of age know and admire the first two Gothic games. I think the content creator LastKnownMeal is around our age, in his twenties. @@augustinadriancristea5873 Well since bootlegging games was a big phenomenon in the 90s and early 2000s (before everyone got DSL internet and started bootlegging themselves) it is to be expected that most of the "gamers" of that era would know about Gothic series (If I remember right it was also given for free with a popular gaming magazine at the time so that also helped I guess). The funny thing is that I was familiarized with the Elder Scrolls at around the same time and have experienced both Gothic and Morrowind but for example americans, many of them have played the elder scrolls but have never even heard of Gothic. Proof of how limited the reach of European games was compared to that of american studios.

Thanks to your video for giving me the desire to meet the Gothic world. I bought Gothic 2 last week end, The gameplay mecanics are incredible and modded the game is really beautifull.
I loved ELEX and I'm looking forward to going back and playing PB's older RPG titles: Gothic and Risen. You can get some great deals during the Steam winter sale, probably.
Now I instantly have to install G1 again 🙏 Being a German myself this has a special place for me. I actually live around 1,5h away from Bochum/Essen, where PiranhaBytes and Pluto13 reside 😁
if you want to replay or first play you may want to get the Mod "Gothic Novus" its a 10 in one Mod that greatly enhances the game, even letting you choose the reason why you were thrown into prison and getting s stat bonus to start with for it (Murder +10 STR, Theft +10 DEXm, speaking up against the kings rule +20 Mana or innocent + 5 Everything
Never rebound any keys, always played it with the standard setup, once you get the hang of it, it kinda feels correct
Gothic was quite popular while I was a kid, almost every kid in the classroom who had a computer loved it.

As a native german speaker I have to say I am very proud to hear this magical game has made it all the way to Bosnia back in the days. It seems the fanbase consists only of Germans, Austrians, German speaking swiss dudes and Polish people.
Gothic 1 and 2 NOTR are basically one single game split in two episodes, and for me they're the best RPG of all time.
Back then everyone, myself included, was waiting for Morrowind, amazed by the images, rumors and articles about it. Gothic got around just by words of mouth, nowhere near the same hype or push since PB wasn't a big company.
But when i got my copy and played it, well, nothing in the world of RPGs was ever the same again.
I absolutely love this game so so so much!!!
The words are so small to describe such a great game......!!! Maybe there is hope for Gothic 5!
They go for Elex II, not Gothic 5 =) have to say though that Elex was a pretty decent game too and gave me some Gothic feelings, unfortunately it wasn't that well balanced (it becomes way too easy at a certain point). I also don't like the setup, but yeah...

I loved gothic 1&2
I'm pretty sure the part about the barrier not letting anyone out was intentional, but the barrier extented much further than it should so more people and of course more landscape were trapped inside (e.g. the mages that created the barrier)
In my case it was Gothic 2 first, then Gothic 1. Both of them are superb games, from music, NPCs, weapons, items, even story. Just wow, and it was 2001 something.
Its not like something wrong happened with the barrier that made it impossible to leave the barrier. It was sole purpose of barrier - to never leave it.
The most important fact is that the barrier got much bigger than intended and it trapped even mages who created it.
I personally like the second one a bit more simply because it has more "free roam" in it, isn't as linear, and has more sidequests/things to do. But the first one is really, really good as well, and has a better story imo. Plus I fucking love the sect camp.
I wouldn't call this a "In depth" review, it is just you rambling on how you experienced Gothic as a kid. Which is okay, just mislabeled title imo

LastKnownMeal I took great pleasure in taking him out of town and beating him senseless. Holy hell was that guy annoying. I just started this series and I love it.
I died on similar place like you almost did, after I wanted to return back to old camp from the sect camp. It got dark once I reached waterfall and bridge to cemetery. Died to wolves few moments later and was scared shitless.
Gothic 1 was my very first RPG i ever played, Found it by accident on a torrent site when i was younger, then bought it when i was older and have tried to play it either every year/2 years. Currently playing it now lol :-) good fun, My daughter likes gothic & always asks to watch me play. Can't wait to get to Gothic 2 & avoid gothic 3 as its too long winded and quite boring after awhile

Very well said! The way i got into world of gothic is very interesting too... it all started when i was 7 years old, with my father's b-day in 2007. One of his best friends got him a Gothic 3 on DVD as a gift. I remember to this day how i watched him play and complete the game. My mind was just blown, before that i really didn't thought video games can do that... so i decided to start playing it on my own in 2008, but i didn't knew shit about English tho hahaha. i was constantly calling my father to translate for me, usually quests and when i have options between the dialogs... when i got good at English i played Gothic 3 and completed it many times, as well as Gothic 1 and 2. Those were, and still are the best RPGs ever made in my opinion and a big part of my childhood as well :D

I really loved it. No i LOVE it and i'll love it forever.
I played it so much times that i cannot tell how much was before. Unfortunately i can't play it set cause my PC is just crashed and even it doesn't start.
BUT there's so much to do in this game. Learning how to fight at acceptable Lv, betraying NPCs or betrayed by them, helping them to reich something. Backstories about those guys are very interesting and you have to find it out by yourself. In practice you have to find out EVERYTHING without someone ist telling you how to get it (accept of a few points). So much different creatures to face them or learn how to collect their claws, teeth, Skins and soooooo much more to sell. You can forge your own swords. You can go everywhere what is able to be seen on the Map but with the knowledge that there is a beast which can take you down with one strike. If you're strong enough you can skill everything without joining a camp.
There's also much more stuff you can do. I'll don't say that kinds of possibilities cause the most things was told from you.
Why doesn't the other games do have this? Everytime anyone told me "go there and do that to receive goods for blablabla...." in everzgame i was forced to join some camps or groups to get better gear. What it is going to be in some future games? Learn how to breath or what I have to if I'm hungry?
I want all these gothic mechanics back in all games they will coming out in the future.

Started playing Gothic 2 NOTR again. I love this game , would love a complete remaster.
With the renderer and high vegeations mods etc. it almost feels like a remaster to me (just started playing again too =D)
First 3D RPG I played as a kid, still play 1 and 2 once a year for the nostalgia :D

Najjača igrica brate, u Tuzli se nalazi naselje Sjenjak, prije 10 godina su svi igrali ovu igricu tu, bukvalno čitavo društvo, bilo nas je oko 10-15 i svi bismo izlazili i pričali o našim avanturama u ovoj predivnoj igrici... Sjećam se da sam ja bio prvi koji je uspio doći do Xardas-a i preći igricu... Dobra stara vremena :')

i am playing games since almost 30 years now, and i spent almost all my freetime gaming...which is a lot since i only give a speech once a week or so so i dont ahve too much work to do.
I love RPGs and most gmes i play are RPG, Adventure or Strategy games - with that background i gotta say in all this time i found NO game that had such immersion and great atmosphere and detail as Gothic 1 - 3 (not the expansion for 3 that sucked)
I wouldnt say its the best RPG out there, there are some i liked more like Mass Effect 1-3, Dragon Age, Baldurs Gate....but Gothic definitely is one of the best game series ever made and again the immersion is better than Skyrim, better than Witcher 3, better than any game i can remember. i literally forgot to eat while playing

Gothic is better than gothic 2 for you because you played it first. I started with Gothic 2 instead so it's better for me and I consider one of the best games ever. I remember running scared trough forest in Gothic 2 as well:)
i was never able to play this game, it was too difficult as was the second one where i could not find my way to the town. gothic 3 was a game that i loved and been able to play though.
You have to play Gothic 1 and 2. Its leagues above Gothic 3 to be honest. The second game is really tough with the addon installed so if it was too hard for you maybe you could try the vanilla version. Or start with Gothic 1. Install system pack and set mouse sensity in ini.file

For anyone interested in playing Gothic 1 on Windows 10, you can use this mod installer for Gothic Reloaded - demo.gothic-reloaded-mod.de/#downloads
In the setup it will install all the right patches in the easiest possible way.
Just don't install the Gothic Reloaded mod itself as it only includes the game's 1st chapter currently.
Yeah, I've had this "Weet dream" idea for a while, that I want just a pure remake of the Original Gothic, maybe in a colaboration between PB and CDPR, with new engine, new characters slightly bigger world, more armor and more of everything! A proper modern remake, to give it love that it deserves. BUT keep the story the same.

Why to kill off whole ork camps in a gothic game?
The ammount of sold off loot is insane and I am unwilling to kill eather NPCs or animals because the former might prove to be useful while the other I cannot milk for money before I can aqquire evry possible type of throphy in game*.
*One of the reason of Gothic 3 Scavanger Sadness... :(
WARNING: Parts of the game is fun BUT you need to be aware this game ends up making the player become a Satanic magician to complete the game. It has you speaking with a demon (compulsory), transporting around using Satanic pentagrams (compulsory), collecting and using cursed weapons (compulsory), able to summon skeletons and golems, working with the worst satanic magicians (compulsory) etc etc. It encourages you heavily to learn & use all the same satanic powers even though you don't have to be a mage - it ends up no difference anyway as that's what you end up becoming.
Its all really a Satanic indoctrination game just like many other games just like it using these exact same methods - ie make it fun but suck the player in to learn all the evil shyte bit by bit - NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Gothic games really aren't that good, I just think the bar is set so low that's why people look highly upon the series. In my opinion Morrowind is the better RPG and it came out around the same time. The atmosphere of Gothic is really good but that only takes a game so far. You need the patience of a saint to be able to beat these games, to be able to put up with the frustrating glitches on damn-near every quest and the endless grinding.
Only a narrow minded person can take Morrowind over a Gothic, or someone who didn't play Gothic at all...

I think it's good! The fact that you can talk unscripted for 33 minutes straight about Gothic shows how special it is!
Nah you don't need a full script, just footnotes and a list of what you want to talk about so you talk about one thing and then the next, and not jump back and forth.
