Went straight up to murder him with the confidence of someone who never played gothic Needless to say, the lil gremlin one-shotted me and I didnt even saw enemy health bar move with my blow *s*
true that, for gothic 2 I recommend choosing the blacksmith proffesion , there is an exploit that can make you rich very fast, as soon as you reach the mercenary blacksmith
I was playing The Long Dark while watching this happily, until the cliff racer sound played. I immediately looked up and left clicked twice instinctively. Morrowind changed me.
Deskdrawer Morrowind changed us all. By the way, as a fellow TLD player, the sudden growl of a wolf on Stalker, especially in CH or BR will forever haunt me.
The Long Dark and Gothic 1 are similar in that wolves alone is scary to deal with. While other games you are killing dragons and giants from the beginning.
One of the fun things I remember about the game is how in the old camp at some point there is a band playing on the little stage and its a real song from the german medieval band In Extremo (as in the band is performing it). Since I listened to them a lot back then that was a fun little thing between a small german game studio and a somewhat small german band (at the time).
13:50 - Well, I sure wasn't expecting Mandalore to reference "Зеленый Слоник". Now I'm both scared and intrigued to find out which obscure memes he's going to use next.
@@titanjakob1056 "Stop right there criminal scum!" Oh... wrong game :-) I like Gothic + Gothic 2 + Risen more than The Elder Scrolls. But Morrowind was the best among them (as RPG).
One big advantage from having a smaller world map is, that you remember every place. I always remember "Oh yeah this hunter is right next to where I killed all those orcs". I couldn't say you anything like that about later Elder Scroll games, where I only vaguely remember special dungeons and cities.
Not to mention a better quest design is possible. Like how you have the quest gives actually describe the quest location and how to get there. Instead of just a boring marker and arrow pointing the way. In this game, one has to listen to the quest givers if you actually want to know the way.
Maps being smaller have nothing to do with maps being memorable or your ability to recall them. Per your example of Elder Scrolls, I can recall where most relevant NPCs, items, quests, and locations are in Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and ESO in addition to irrelevant but noteworthy ones, and I do so almost entirely from associative memory formed from an initial playthrough. Don't conflate your own shortcomings with those of the game's. @@kopicat2429 The overwhelmingly vast majority of games confer relevant quest details through the dialogue or quest log, regardless of there being a marker or not. It's also not remotely "better" to not have them, you just happen to prefer it, there's many many reasons markers are a ubiquitous feature. @@KaleidosXXI You might have a point. And yeah, I might not be good at differentiating the objective and subjective. But since you seem able to, maybe you can explain what makes map markers and radar objectively better?

Oh, Gothic....Game that in my country have status of absouletly cult classic. And for good reasons. One thing that I personaly adore about this game is that even in very late game, with god-like gear and stats, there are still monsters that can kill you in a heartbeat if player isn't paying atenction. But if you know how to fight, you can murder preety much 99% of NPC-s and still finish the game.
Nice to see this game covered. It has alot of flaws, no doubt but it was a very ambitious game back in the days. To really understand why Gothic is a cult-classic today one has to play the sequel. It's the better game in every regard and has a very good addon too.
I wasn't expecting you here, although on the other hand, you are German so it's normal to look at another youtuber's review about Gothic, big fan of your channel✌️✌️✌️
19:09 The Dead Island games actually have that as a control option, they call it "stick swinger" or something. You even get an achievement for getting kills using it. It pairs amazingly well with the first person melee combat, very visceral feel to it, but it does make movement an absolute nightmare. Add in the fact it's a ZOMBIE game, where ZOMBIES SWARM you, it's completely unviable.
I personally still loved G3 a lot. But it was not as much a masterpiece as 1 + 2. But the biomes, the camps, the size of the world, the loose main quest... that was really nice.
I was lucky to play it on a PIII 500 MHz in 800 x 600. A friend played on a 266 MHz PII and it was so bad (view distance nearly 0 to get playable FPS). Saving a game took a good 10 or so seconds and loading one was a bit over a minute. There was a demo released that featured the whole first starting area around the old camp and I played that through four or five times, knocking down everyone in the camp just to get more XP for that last level up. It was a ton of fun.
@@Gigator The first time i played gothic1 was also on such a potatoe pc, but then i bought myself a PIII 500 and a geforce 2 mx and (dont remember exactly) 128 or 256mb ram....it was so great to play this gem on nearly max settings XD
It's called The Green Elephant, it's arthouse movie which is so bad, it's good. Think about it as Russian The Room, except with less logic and more shit (literally, there are 2 main characters in that movie and one really wants other one to eat his shit, that's major plot point...). It's fairly popular, you can watch it online with English subs.
Finished it just now and it was one of those experiences that I will never forget. Despite the jank, it was very immersive and it never got boring. Been a long time since Okami where I got complete satisfaction throughout a whole game without getting tired at all, despite looking under every rock and checking every nook and cranny. The design was very fascinating.
In Gothic 1 you'd want to knock your opponent down with a sword then finish them off with a bow/crossbow once they're back up - you'll get exp for them once more!
Yeah, the melee weapons knock them down first, but the piercing arrows kill them. That's also an important difference for some quests, where you better shouldn't kill some people.
yes that is a great way of getting exp, but it is also bugusing and defenitely not planned (and I personally don't like that but everyone can choose for himself ofc)
@@Katzenhaarallergie Yes.. just like me killing Raven in G1.. I mean.. you did get the TP to Fire magicians.. going to the ore baron and Raven showing up and were able to kill him... Look up "Gothic II: The Chronicles Of Myrtana" here on youtube. A Gothic 2 Megamod (essentially another game on the same engine and in the same world). It's nearing completion.
I loved this game. This is an epic classic, right up there with Morrowind, Bloodlines, Deus Ex, etc. Playing and exploring was a blast, reading and planning for a more epic play-through (min/maxxing or completionist mode) was just as rewarding (as you had to face insane challenges, but for awesome rewards), this game was fun for multiple plays. This is one of those games where you think "why aren't we getting more games with this much awesome in this day and age, how come such old games (with such limitations) can outshine so many modern creations?". I know that some games are just breakthrough brilliant and innovative, but we can be building on old successes instead of innovating new duds. Even remakes, like X-Com and MechAssault, are such a disappointment; why do they have to dumb-down a game, can't they remake a classic and just improve graphics and take advantage of advanced computing power, why do they have to mess with success and muck it up? I think this is why I look for indie games more, they are more likely to focus on gameplay & story over just graphics & style/gimmicks. I'd rather have substance over slick graphics any day.
I really loved Gothic 1, explored every possible inch on the map. I came to it fairly early, being czech, I remember it being distributed here in gaming stores.
Russian dubbing for this game was 11/10. Phenomenal. My whole childhood is associated with this game. Countless of hours spent in it. Love it. One of the best RPGs ever made.
This game is such a hidden gem. I first played it maybe in 2003 when I was still a kid. Up to this day it remains one of my most favorite games ever. If you manage to overcome some of the obstacles (graphics and difficulty), I guarantee you will be hooked.
i grew up with this and im still play it today some times. somehow i see new things 15 years later( never knew you could hide into a barrel lol ). happy you reviewed it gj!
This and Gothic 2 is my all time favorite single player RPGs. I remember faking sick in school and staying at home for a week just to play this non stop back in 2002.
Great subtle gachimuchi you had there. As for Gothic, another really remarkable thing about it is the incredibly long view distance the engine is capable of even on normal settings.
Thank you times a million. Even though I'm generally bollocks at gaming, I still have a great appreciation for this game and the way that it does combat. At least at the very beginning. I never really got further than that but am working on it. I love that you need to be legitimately disciplined in your swordsmanship to get anywhere. I'm glad I actually decided to take a tougher game like this for the spin.
Tip number 1: Don't change the controls. Simply keep you left hand on the left control and right hand on the arrow keys and you're set. Easiest controls ever. Use left ALT to jump and space or the number keys to draw your equipped weapon/spell EDIT: oh yeah, you can still put strafing to A and D for example, then handle CTRL with your little finger and strafing with index and ring, but keep the other controls as they are and you'll have a LOT smoother experience.
IIRC it is possible to use the mouse. I played through G1 last year and I liked being able to use the mouse to control the camera. Then setting Action to left mouse button was very comfortable. And then of course Movement to WASD and Turning to QE.
One of my favourite Games of my childhood (+Gothic 2 with the addon)(Also it was pretty big in Germany obv.) . Tho in my playthrough last year I didnt bother with buying tons of lockpicks I just saved the game before going to a chest and wrote the directions on a piece of paper till I got the right combo, when the lockpick broke I just reloaded the safe. There is a bug where u can get into the main castle early and I pretty much emptied all the chests in the first hour of the game, got myself decent gear and blew through the game. Defo my favourite RPG Series together with the Witcher Games who defo had a cooler overall story tho.
Hey maybe didn't show the best examples because those potheads could easily seem as unnatural in real life. But his point holds true, many characters in the English voice acting just have a voice that doesn't fit the emotional state or position they are in.
Do dungeon siege please. Also, I appreciate that you explain how to run the game before actually reviewing it. You have to do that with dungeon siege btw.
Best review i have ever seen done on the game. Not kidding. And i have seen a lot. Well done. Thanks for this. Only thing i would have loved you to mention is the amazing quality and amount of user created content for that game that easily expand the playtime of the game by 10 times
I just realized that you’ve got the old Harry Potter Ost playing in the background. God bless, would love to see a review of those first two games from you :)
The strong side of this game is the atmosphere and the story. It is 2018 and I play this game again since i was a child (now I´m 27). It is still playable and will bring you into the game.
I am always surprised when I hear that someone played Gothic1/2 on keyboard with arrow keys and ctrl. In menu you can just enable "alternate key binding" option and here you go, wasd + mouse.
At its time, WASD controls standard wasn't fully established. And for me - arrow keys for one hand, ctrl and the rest for the other - did just fine. Btw.: I don't like finger acrobatics on keyboards enogh, to play one handed.
I recognize the voice actor for the character at 12:30. He voiced a character in operation flashpoint way back in the day. God that voice really brings back memories.
Interesting that you say the story is bad, I always found it to be absolutely brilliant. Not so much the ultimate goal, but the execution. you start out searching for a way to get out and it takes many twists and turns . Everything ties together very well, is set up smartly und suprises you. People you think you are doing a quest with can betray you or go mad, events happen and characters that you thought you needed die, there is a war breaking out und you find yourself on a side you didn't expect, items are placed carefully and in the context of the worldbuilding. you have to play old campl to get the full expierence though

Needless to say, the lil gremlin one-shotted me and I didnt even saw enemy health bar move with my blow *s*
Fun fact: Gothic 1 and 2 were inspirations for CD Projekt Red when it comes to creating living world in Witcher games.

That explains a lot.
By recommending the german voice acting this makes it the best gothic review on UA-cam.

Gothic 1 and 2 are the perfect rainy day games, you snug up in a blanket in the dark and just soak the atmosphere in.
I played Gothic I through about 6 or 7 times. It was always in Winter after the first time I played it, it was almost like preparing for Christmas.

Damn... now I’m just dying for the next rain storm to come in cause that sounds incredible.
It don't here though 😔
true that, for gothic 2 I recommend choosing the blacksmith proffesion , there is an exploit that can make you rich very fast, as soon as you reach the mercenary blacksmith
Another fun thing is that band and song doesn't exist in the polish version, but the stage they play on is still there
When the Russan voices came I almost lost it. There is no way I could've foreseen it. 10likes. No. 100likes. Your reviews are amazing.

That's every Elder Scrolls game. Especially fucking Daggerfall
Learn to differentiate between subjective preference and objective improvement.

To quote Durmin Paradox "You have to learn how the AI thinks...however there is no way you can do that on your first play" :D

Would be nice if they added it to Dead Island 2: it would really compliment the improved gore.
You get extra XP (double) with a human by knocking him down melee, then wait and kill him with bow/cross bow.
Also, Gothic 2 gold edition is also good

I personally still loved G3 a lot. But it was not as much a masterpiece as 1 + 2. But the biomes, the camps, the size of the world, the loose main quest... that was really nice.
I love Gothic 3 too and it makes me sad that they had not enough time to finish that game. It was good but it could be so much better.
G3 is still awesome though!
Flachzange I also really like Gothic 3
Played this on a PII 333 MHz in 640x480 on minimum settings, getting like 15 FPS, was amazing regardless!
