  • Meet the REAL Severum; Heros severus. There are 5 species in the Heros genus: severus, efasciatus, natatus, spurius, and liberifer. Our 300 gallon office display features a group of 3 pairs of H. severus in peak condition with a dominant pair that spawns regularly. We obtained this stunning group of wild specimens from our Colombian expedition back in 2013. Check out the latest spawn as the pair removes their fry from the aquarium glass and carefully places them within the rock work for protection.

    I have kept Heros sp. for many years now, starting with some golds back in the 80s. Love these fish.

    Nice video... I have the same severum but it's only one and some are golden severum...and can you pls tell...Bout the suitable food for severum,temperature and when should we change water? What is the biggest size of severum from all over the world?????thanks..

      Hi Samil, the H severus is the largest species, in its wild form. Unfortunately domestic severums have been in many cases been crossed with other species. They should be fed a variety of foods that do include some vegetable matter in them, we have found with the wild fish we have here at HQ that our vegetable based spirulina rich pellets work very well. Some live small earthworms once and a while are appreciated. Large robust flake food, cubes of FD blackworms and other formulations of quality pellet foods, such as the Bug Bite formulations are recommended. Temperature should be within 78 to 82F (25.5 to 27 C). Regular water changes are best, every two weeks 25 to 50% is best.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  5 років тому

      Dennis, thanks for asking, they are Leporinus altipinnis, we mispronounced that name in the video.

      LOL sausage looking fish =))) It is an unusual one in that each of the stripes are divided by a thin yellow bar. Never seen that before.

    Red parrots are the result of any species of severum crossed with midas or red devil. Red parrots are not the result of crosses between species of severum.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 роки тому

      That is correct, the point in the video related to how diluted the severum has become.

      Blood parrots are a cross of a red devil or midas, most likely midas crossed with some sort of vieja cichlid over much breeding of those species the desired mouth and body shape was achieved, I've yet to see a legit severum/red devil hybrid and real hard evidence
