I would call them "The smart man's Discus" They eat, grow, and live for years. All things Discus won't do,or for long. Severums are probably good with most water plants too. I'm really liking the look of Red Shoulder Severums. I might try those one day.
As an owner of both a Red Severum and Stendker Discus I can say.....there is no comparison lol. My red sev is the crown jewel of my Cichlid tank. My Discus get weekly water changes of 50%, they eat a lot more and have to have Beef Heart. I have 15 in a 120 and have to run a FX4 and FX6. However I have seen prices of the fully grown Red Sevs at Discus prices.
The thing to remember is that canned greens are devoid of nutrients..So if you want to be really do good to your fish you buy them frozen or if you can get it in the season fresh.
I looooove this video. I have kept Severums for years, and adore them! (Red Spot, Gold, and Turquoise) . Everyone I meet that takes an interest in my fish gets pretty much this exact speech! XD
Those Discus on the sister vid are quite nice. Never kept them. I do love and have kept Severums for years: Gold, Green, Turquoise, Red Spotted, Gold Red Spotted, Turquoise Red Spotted, and Super Red Spotted. All breeder terms but descriptive for sure. They really are bullet proof, given a good diet and lots of room. Never lost one, nor can I remember having one sick. Easy to spawn and rear. Very personable fish that recognize and engage the person that cares for them. Thanks for sharing...(I also feed blanched Romaine, and they demolish it in five minutes)
+Caylor's Aquatics When I purchased these fish I never intended to keep them long. They were just something to have until I could figure out what to do with the tank (discus again?). They’ve definitely grown on me over the past year and I do plan to hold on them for a while. The two that have paired off look identical. Is there a way to sex these fish without removing them and venting?
Yes @@TMAquatics I find body shape to be a sure bet. The males are longer, thinner (both top to bottom and side to side), and generally have longer dorsal streamers. Females are rounder, thicker, and can have (but not always) lesser dorsal streamers. Some breeders say face slope (like Angels) is helpful. I have two large mated pairs, and both spawn often. Filmed together, both pairs have obvious sexual distinctions. (A male Green who is huge with a Super Red female. Also, two Gold Red Spotteds, also quite large}.
Great video. I have a trio of geophagus and was so happy to find out Severums were a good tank mate. Picking up a pair of greens tomorrow and will get some red spotted golds later.
I purely love this footage. The aquascape looks fantastic, especially with the driftwood. I always wanted to have tank with red severums. I know they have huge personality and quite hardy fish. Curious you seem to have some clowns along with these. Severums are active fish that devour food much faster than it hits the bottom of the tank. This may cause food scarcity for bottom dwelling fish which like to hide more. My clowns love cucumber. I have a tank with clowns and few tetras which act as deterrents so that clowns feel much safer. I do provide them with caves. Once again your Severums look awesome. Curious where are you from.
+my fishcave The Severums are definitely aggressive feeders, but I do take measures to guarantee the clowns and the Corys get plenty to eat. I feed much smaller foods to the bottom feeders that gets ignored by the Severums. I’m in Minnesota. Thanks for watching. 👍
+inventoryking Strange because Innever considered them. I am usually drawn to species that have a much higher price point. These were just a temporary fish, but I’ve grown attached. Thanks for stopping by. If you’re ever in MN, let me know.
wow they look amazing ,i have been looking at these in my local fish store yours look much better and healthier, great eaters you have very cool fish i enjoy your channel
Wonderful tank. Please give follow-up in the months ahead. Do you think they'll outgrow the 120...by that I mean still be ableto have all 6 in this tank indefinitely ?? Again, a fantastic tank !!
Brian's Fish Tanks I just wanted something that gets relatively big that didn’t cost a small fortune like Kenny’s Discus. Wasn’t planning to keep these this long, but now I’ve grown attached. They are easy, hardy and have great personalities. With that being said, I have also considered turning this tank into a community Tanganyikan tank. That’s not a priority right now. Finishing the fish room and getting it automated somehow is number one. 👍
Severums are awesome fish idk about it being a poor mans fish. They catch people’s attention every time they see my bubbles lol I have discus too royal blues and the white ones
I think the Severum and Uaru are called poor man’s discus because they are the only other two fish that the fry feed off of the slime coat of the parents, and well, they’re way cheaper lol…..
The poor man's Uaru??? I actually like Severums a good deal more than the other two. Nice promo to get people to buy Severums - they are too underrated..
I know what my issue is, the back of my tank has nothing on it, just the grey wall behind it, so my lighting looks crappy. Now I gotta figure out how to paint the back of my tank black without pulling it away fro the wall lol, great. It’s a 125, 6 foot.
Beautiful fish! Love the tank in general. Not sure I’ll be keeping Severums anytime soon but I was spying your Denison barbs. Nice school of cories too, are those false juli?
Hi, Uaru are known for being the poor mans discus because they, like the discus feed the fry off of slim on their bodies. There are only three fish in the world that do that.
+JW Collect As I mentioned in the vid, I’ve heard both Urau and Sevs referred to as “poor mans discus” countless times by numerous sources. Uarus for the very obvious reason you stated, and Sevs because they too share some similarities to Discus, in some people’s opinion. Either way, doesn’t matter. Just glad you stopped by and visited my channel. Thank you for watching. 👍
Nice Discus Fish in your tank. Are those Discus Orange or Red? So you are poor, huh? Plenty of tanks in the house, is that what makes you poor? Just kidding dude! Beautiful setup! Excellent tutorial on those fish. Enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!
The LFS called them Red Streak Severums. Same thing as a Red Spotted. Poor? Let me call my financial advisor and find out. After all, Stocks are down 🤪
TM Aquatics I’m just kidding. Enjoyed watching. Why change the name of such a lovely fish. Discus are so hard to raise and keep. Sure they are beautiful, but then you limit what you can keep with them. Rich or poor is a state of mind, and a economic situation. I’ve been to Belize City, Belize where most of the people are really financially wrecked, but the people keep their homes clean. They are poor, but live clean and healthy. They may be poor, but are rich in living well! We can’t judge people based upon their financial status. I know a few really rich people, and they are miserable. They are always thinking on who is out to steal from them. I know of some rich people who won’t speak to regular people for two reasons: 1) they don’t want to waste their voice on regular people. 2) they think everyone is try to get their money. Sad way to live. I’m Blest of God Beyond Belief!
Good video and good tips. Are you sure the pair at the left side of the tank are a male and female? I've had green severums for over 40 years, and the males are always the ones with the labyrinth pattern on the cheeks. The females don't have this pattern.
I have read that, but also seen contradicting statements. I no longer have these fish so it’s hard to say if they eventually spawned or if it turned out to be two males.
I have 4 spotted reds in a 150 with 1 Oscar and they about the same size. They definitely grew quick. They are such a great fish and the Oscar is very tolerant of letting them exist in HIS tank, ha. I feed them a mix of Hikari Gold, Hikari excel, and bug bites. For their veggies, they get Ken’s veggie sticks which if you have not checked those out before, it is the best veggie stick that’s out there. Really good ingredients with seaweed, spirulina, carrots, squash, and spinach. Good tip on the green beans, I’ll give that a try.
Hey i just got a 7 inch redspotted severum and tommorow im getting 2 gold severums and 1 green will their be any fights adding them? My tank is a 120 like urs and i just got the red spotted yesterday
I've got a few Rotkeil Severums in a 600 litre tank. Is it possible to sex them before their adult colours come though? Someone told me they can be vent-checked at 4-5 cm long? Thanks
OK, my big red severum, has a white dot on his pec fin. it now has spread across the top of his fin. looks like its eating it away. I have tried, API FUNGAL CURE, API PREMAFIX, API PRIMAFIX, AND API BACTERIA CURE, NOW HES GETTING A DOSE OF THE SEACHEM PARAGUARD. NOTING SEEMS TO BE WORKING
Sorry, I wouldn’t have any idea without seeing it. There are a few Cichlid Facebook groups that are rather resourceful. Suggest you post a pic and ask for feedback. Good luck.
These severum aren't cheap. In my city and on line, a 2 inch fish cost $40. To get them the size of the ones you have on this video will cost 110. Same with the Uaru. Nothing poor about them. Also, I have wild caught discus and wild caught plecos and satanoperca mixed with a few German discus. I don't go through all of those changes. I use city tap, so a 50% water change once a week and keep the temp at 84 degrees and feed a variety of pellets and freeze dried worms. They all thrive.
Do they fight like parrot?i have 3 parrot in 4 feet tank they always fight like crazy.so i want change fish.i want keep severum now.can i kepp 4 5 severum in my 4 feet tank?
The more I watch this video the more I want these. Let me ask you a couple questions, hard to breed? and I have a 75 gal. would you keep them in a tank that small?
never understood this poor mans discus severums are cooler than Discus i genuinely never understood the attraction to discus when i see a discus, or African cichlid tank i just think what a waste of a tank.
Check out my Discus tank playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL1cRiz-mToY7fYl8dfkaW7OUrYlnd73Yq.html

those are beautiful. some of the nicest ones i've seen
I like that Severum females are colorful like the males. Some other cichlids have drab looking females.
Love Severums. Years ago I kept 3 Greens in a 75 and 2 paired off. My personal favorite cichlid.

I remember your discus tank fondly. :) Those severums were pretty, too. I don't believe I've ever seen red ones.
Great vid! Just purchased my first two severums - hope they turn out like yours!
Red severms are really pretty... yours look great thanks for sharing
I like it mostly because you don't have any background music playing! Thank you!
awesome review and advise.. I am one step to setting my severum community tank. Thanks to you. :)
I love severums
Awesome looking severums. I’ve been on the fence about getting some again you just convince me I need to make that move. Thanks
