Awww the lill 2D Steph and Adam are the cutest thing EVER! Sorry you had so much work because of the blurry footage! But we got this lill treat of Steph's Animation instead. You totally could have just done a voice over and gotten away with it lol. But I enjoyed all the cute lill expressions for the characters and lill Patches Drinking sounds in the background.
The pigs were heavily debating the proper etiquette of how to use a sketchbook in the background too haha!!

As I see It, rules kills creativity. People have different art styles and different art processes. I think we should stop gatekeeping what we should do because we create fear in young artist of doing things wrong when there is no wrong. Art is art and everything is art. I think rules as an exercise can be fun and inspire creativity, like a three marker challenge, or a prompt! But overall yes! No rules!!!

Loved the recovery of the video! Loved Adams angry and icy face. Sketchbooks are such a personal thing. Seeing all the sketchbook tours that float around help to give you a little more ease at working in your own personal one.

I never thought there was a wrong way to use a sketch book... 😕 It is for experimentation and practice. Note taking. Gesture studies, comics, playing with color. Learning the basics and principles. Creating something you can be proud of. I don't think every page has to be a master piece. 🤔

I think I've taken my sketchbook to the extreme where I fill every available space.. so nothing really stands out from the rest. It's kind of a protective mechanism to sort of broadcast "it's okay, I don't really think *any* of this is good!" I also rarely "finish" any one drawing, ie with shading or colour. I find the sketchy part the most fun, I've always been that way ever since I was a kid! I think I could benefit from pulling back and working more on polishing things that I do like, instead of quickly moving on to the next sketch. Kool vid guys!
Im so glad someone is discussing this. I think of it constantly. Imo sketching is not a full piece. Sketching is not a finished piece. Sketchbooks are for sketching. Doodles. Ideas. Not whole pieces. And they're private, not for everyone.
I sometimes write a random plot points of my stories in my sketchbook with sketches of my character's designs or them doing something, and some ideas about the aesthetics of the setting.

i'm so glad you found a compromise to release the video because there's some great tips in there, specially for someone like me who only draws like 3 pictures a year because i'm not confident in my art. which...of course i'm not, since i'm not practicing...this helps as a reminder, that not everything has to be perfect from the first line

I definitely don't think there's a right or wrong way to use a sketchbook! My own sketchbooks are filled with pretty polished pieces AND messy sketches! Whatever makes you happy, then that's the correct way for you!
Also can I just say I love how I was able to figure out Steph was drawing a Mr. Men just from the funny body shape xD

Aww, loving 2D Adam and Steph! As for sketchbooks, the way I’ve used mine has changed and evolved over the years…I’ve used then for working out costume designs for my characters, planning out school art projects step-by-step, I’ve done collages and rubber stamping, and just doodling. And sometimes I use them as visual journals, too, so writing becomes part of it as well. I think people who go around saying “You’re using your sketchbook wrong!” are just dorks.
that is a great sitting pose sketch 😀 my sketchbooks can be pretty messy and full of notes, swatches, loose sketches sand the occasional sketch from life in it

I just bought my very first sketchbook EVER 🥲 I was so afraid of ruining it with a bad drawing or ugly handwriting. I broke it in with a cute swatch page where I tested out my adorable brand new gel pens. 🎉

I've always struggled with figuring out how to use my sketchbooks (like do I make it all pretty etc), so lately I've been trying to just treat it as a space to put ideas in. And depending on the vibes I might turn them into full pieces.
I've ripped out pages before. I was in the mindset of "this book needs to be amazingly curated and anything that is sub par is trash" due to the amount of social media I was consuming. I do have a sketchbook that is currently for "finished pieces only" but the rest are "do whatever is in your brain and have fun". It took time to get to this point.
When it comes to my own sketchbook, I tend to try and fit as many sketches or drawings onto one page. I'm a mixed media artist so I also tend to fill my sketchbook with all kinds different mediums depending on my mood. Sometimes I do finished drawings in them and sometimes not. My mindset is "Enjoyment over Aesthetic", and as a result sometimes I'll actually make drawings from marker bleeding through the page or let watercolors bleed into each other. The important thing about a sketchbook, in my opinion, is that you should be free to do whatever you want in it. Since my brain is a very "chaotic neutral" kind of creative I don't care if things smudge or aren't pretty, but if you need a pretty sketchbook to feel creative then do what works for you. I don't believe in a wrong way to use a sketchbook personally, just do what works for you❤

I keep several sketchbooks, some are for messy sorting out ideas, some are for more serious studies, and I keep a journal in which I do little illustrations from my day, which I care more about looking good. Also, different kinds of paper, from thin paper only good for pencil work, to watercolor paper that I wouldn't want to waste on pencil sketches.
HA! adam absolutely *roasting* the version of me 5 years ago that absolutely ripped out pages of sketchbooks (and many many notebooks) because i'd panicked that i'd messed up! (i do feel the same way about it now, why on *earth* did i used to do that)
i love how you managed to still use the video! and these 2D yous would be great to use again for the top down sections in future videos if you wanted!

Love this! I know it was born out of an issue with the video being blurry, but I would absolutely watch more videos that are drawn and slightly animated like this!
So all in all, do what makes your heart happy in a sketchbook. Got it! ;) I think I can manage that.
I think Steph's current mixed media would work great with a cheap sketchbook/paper base since it will likely be covered by another medium first before the artwork is utilized. I know for me, just using a pad of nice paper and sticking that where I want gets a lot more bang for your buck in terms of quality paper utilization. This could be marker paper, watercolor, or other fancy paper. That's just my quick take.😄

I loved this! It was a creative solution for your little blunder lol I happen to have multiple sketchbooks on the go. One for mixed media where I put my finished "pretty" pieces of watercolour or inks in, and another for messy work where I put the mess in my brain on paper. I also like to plan my paintings digitally, so technically, I have a digital sketchbook, and I do have finished digital work too. I'm a huge fan of all sketchbooks. Even the ones at the dollar store. I get those for my little ones to experiment in. hehe
I don't know what the wrong way is, but I know the right way is with a Doodle Date video on in the background. I'm way way way too excited to be this early. :3

QUALITY DRAWING ENVIRONMENT
I love hearing how other people talk and think about their sketchbooks cause everyone has a different opinion on them. On one hand I love seeing the absolute messy sketches and planning stages of a sketchbook like how Adam does, but on the other hand I’m in love with the idea of a 100% finished perfect sketchbook like how Steph says. In my own sketchbook I tend to use mostly gel pens and at this point I have every single colour for any occasion, and I absolutely take my gel pen drawings to completion. I sometimes use water based marker but that’s usually if I wanna get an idea out faster or if my carpal tunnel flares up.
I think my urge to have every page in my sketchbook a complete illustration comes from my ADHD. My ADHD makes it impossible for me to leave a drawing looking sketchy or unfinished in ANY way even in my sketchbook. It’s either a full drawing or I failed and I have a fear of failure 😅
My sketchbook is reserved for my more “guilty pleasure” type of drawings like OC couples being sappy or character designs on funky backgrounds, like nothing I would normally record and put on UA-cam. Then other sketchbook drawings are completely finished like my profile picture, that was done 100% in gel pens in my sketchbook.
I feel it’s hard to explain without thinking I sound weird or something but it’s definitely my ADHD/neurodivergent brain that won’t allow me to use a sketchbook in Adam’s way no matter how much I love looking at that aesthetic.

2d Adam and Steph are so cute! Personally I tend to use my sketchbooks as a lose space for planning bigger pieces, sketching from life, and experimenting, so a lot of it is not super pretty but then a few pages might be super rendered because I was just having a little fun with gouache or something .

I have a whole Pinterest board called Art Refs for when I can’t think of anything to draw or else I’ll end up spending too long just scrolling online for ideas 😅
And the back 2 pages of every sketchbook I use is reserved for swatches and color tests :)

Always. I have so many sketchbooks that I became too precious with. I didn’t want to “ruin” them and had this mindset that the art has to be high quality or at least pretty, but in being so precious with them, they stood in a drawer collecting dust, so why bother even having them? I’m trying to break that mold. There will be plenty more stilman, moleskine' etc. books, and a full one with random sketches and practicing is a better option than blank pages ever to be touched.

So far, I've only ever completed one sketchbook and I'm currently working on my second one, but it's been so frustrating! I really liked my first sketchbook's paper, but I decided to try something different this time aaaaand... I hate it. The paper in my current sketchbook is super thick, so I thought it would be good for watercolor and stuff, but it has no texture at all. So it's terrible not only for watercolor, but also for pencils and colored pencils - my favorite medium. It dislikes crayons too. To be honest, I think the only thing it kinda likes is markers, and even that you have to take it with a grain of salt, because the paper does not absorb the ink easily, so it takes a while to dry and it can smudge really easily. Anyways, sorry for venting in here. I'm just really frustrated with this sketchbook. Can't wait to be done with it so I can move on to the next one (which will be the same brand of my first sketchbook, I decided).

I tend to tear out pages if I absolutely HATE what's on it. I'd rather be content with the sketchbook as a whole than let a page I hate ruin the experience of flipping through it.

Maybe you could turn it into a scrap book style page by covering it with washi tape and stickers if you have a book that isn’t ring bound and you don’t want that weird leftover edge bit from tearing the page out 😊
i same a small sugestion if you ever what to do a do over of page. i usually washi tape another sheet of paper on top of it so the orginal page is still accesable but covered up
I’ve also torn out pages…I’ve also painted over an entire page with cheap acrylic craft paint and then just drew on it again once it dried. 😆

I am so excited for Steph’s imminent sketchbook tour 😎 and I love Adam judging people’s sketchbook techniques (ie. ripping out pages and smearing poo on the page) 😂 I keep my sketchbook in a combination of ways!! Most similarly to Steph, but I do sketch and do studies like Adam does as well. 2d Adam and Steph are wonderful!!! Also omg I just noticed, are those some of the stickers I sent you, Steph?? :D

I have two sketchbook style. One to doodle, thumbnail, vent and practice and another one for... finished pieces in which "failing" is not allowed. I'll get a stroke if I ever screw something up in that 😂
My... now ex (unfortunately) used to do art together much like the both of you do. We were both very different his medium of choice is paint whilst mine is pencil and it showed in our art process. He was used to the flow of liquid mediums and personally I think that made his work more "playful" (go with the flow). We swapped mediums once and although he had the patience of a Saint working with pencil he couldn't replicate his usual flowy art style. Meanwhile I had nervous breakdowns left and right because I couldn't for the life of me deal with his liquid mediums doing it's own thing half of the time. 😂😂 Brush too dry, brush too wet, colours contaminanting eachother, paint sticking to my hand, brushing it off with my other hand... great now my other hand is covered in paint. DEAR GOD! I facepalmed now my face is covered in paint... etc. Etc. 😂 It suffered that day but it was fun and became a very special memory. I miss doing art with him, he inspired me.

A lot of the pages in my sketchbooks are filled with doodles and random swatching, and I've never made art with poo nor do I ever intend to but I've drawn a lot of guinea pig poos while I doodle lol. Your cartoon selves are so cute but expected the piggy one when I heard the water bottle, I do love that little addition to your videos 😊

I have two sketchbooks. 1 is 'messy' and only filled with doodles. The second one is the 'clean' one, where I put full illustrations in.
That worked out nice for years!

There's sketchbooks, and sketchbooks! Like you mentioned, expensive watercolor & mixed media sketchbooks are more precious, so I'm careful about wasting good paper.
But I have other sketchbooks (with thin sketch paper) whose entire point is to house rough ideas, doodles, notes, gesture sketches, and occasionally a "nice" completed drawing. I tend to fill out those much faster 😁
Also I've never ripped out a bad drawing out of a sketchbook, but I did glue two pages together to hide a particularly hideous drawing, or cover it with collage paper because I don't want to see it again.
i feel like 2d adam and steph is an introduction to vtubers in these videos which i fully support all the way. 😊
