@@DoodleDate The confetti swatches might be really good to try because they're larger and might have more colour range. Although the Primatek are always a bit harder to rewet as far as I know.
Seeing the colours on this swatch card I'm kind of surprised at what was included and what wasn't! I love Daniel Smith and they're my most used paints, but most of my favourite colours weren't on here! 😱
Next time if you want to do less "heavy petting" 😉 you could spritz the dots or use a dropper or one of your water brushes to put a drop of water on the paint dots and leave it for a sec, it will help make the paint easier to pick up and spread with less wrist pain.
Also, I know this isn't something you usually do in your style but for me at least my favourite part of Daniel Smith paints is getting them extra juicy and wet and slapping them on some textured cold press paper. Really cool to see how the colours mix and disperse and settle on the paper! Especially the granulating colours. 😘👌 Highly recommend, 10/10, very satisfying.
The iridescent and interference paints work well on black paper or layered on other paints, I think, but I haven't used them. 🤔

Swatching is important to see how the art supply turns out on paper. You need it to see the actual colors. It also differs based on the paper so it's best to swatch before every illustration. I also do swatching when matching colors for a drawing. I need to see them together before ruining the piece :')
Absolutely. The primatek need rough paper really to show off best for example.
If you have a set type of paper you use (or a few) then in my opinion it makes more sense to just make a swatch sheet for every type of paper in advance. In the long run saves a lot of time, effort, and supplies
I would love a video of Adam naming color swatches! Additionally Steph can do it too, if they each swatch random colors for each other! Steph could come up with names unrelated to the color, but name it what it makes her think of?

I think the interference colors are paints that look like different tones depending if you use them on light or dark paper
Adam has the primatek set that I have so it’s got Mayan blue, amethyst genuine, rhodonite, jadeite and piemontite! The amethyst genuine is actually subtly sparkly! Also lapis lazuli was what they originally used to make ultramarine!

I love that you open and share items that were sent to you on your videos... I mean, lots of UA-camrs make it into 1 video where they open all of them on camera in 1 video. But I like that you guys open your packages and then share them randomly in videos. It shows that you were so excited that you couldn't help but open it up. Then you share the gift with us. I just love that about yall. I'm rambling but this was fun! ❤

I bought my girlfriend one of the octopus plushies for Christmas! It was the last one in stock at the store AND in her favorite colors blue and green! It felt like destiny!! Lol
Interference colours tend to work better over dark colours. Loved watching the swatching!

The primatek colour names are the minerals they are made from so the garnet one is made from garnet, the lapis is made from lapis .etc. so the colour of the paints are pretty much the same as the actual rocks
The row of colors in the shiny paint labeled duo or duo chrome are those magic paints that flip flops and change colors depending on the angle of light! Like the single pan of handmade pan it you featured in a video a bit ago

I dreamt that you guys sent ME a huge box of different colored pencils or crayons or something, and then if that wasn't enough, you came to visit me! We had our own special Doodles And Tea afternoon and although Steph had her own ginger lemon tea, Adam was gracious enough to accept the ginger lemon tea that I had to offer. I'm one of the swatch-a-thon fans, so this was a great episode for me! I went back and watched the old gemstone watercolor video and somehow I hadn't liked it, so it's good that we got a reminder about it. All the video ideas you had in this are great, I would enjoy watching any of them!

The second to last row are interference colors which means that they appear white until they are put on black or dark colors

As someone who’s obsessed with rocks & minerals, I think it’s so cool and innovative that this company made watercolors out of them! I’ve always wanted to see how they look, and now I kinda want them 👀

Unfortunately, last spring a geologist examined samples of several primatek paints and it turns out they have very little of any actual minerals/gems in them. They’re still lovely colors though, I’m especially fond of the apatite

Lapis Lazuli was the original ultramarine, before they’d created the modern pigment version (PB29). Lapis Lazuli is a very weakly pigmented paint, but also super expensive because it’s incredibly hard to find blues pigments in nature. But it was all we had for a long time.

As far as I understand it "interference" colors are dependent on the color beneath (and possibly?? around) it. So it may look blue on white paper but it will look red on black paper, and any other colors underneath will change it too. That's as far as I understand it though, I could be completely wrong lol.
I love swatching, sometimes when I can't think of what to paint, I just swatch color hahaha.

The interference colours have pigments that scatter the light differently when it refracts on different coloured backgrounds! check them out on black paper :)

Quinacridone is just a fancy word for "Synthetic Compound". It means it's a man-made color using a specific process. :)
Some of those colors look really good on black paper.

After having swatched the 238 Daniel Smith sample color sheets I would recommend using a spray bottle to gently spritz them all before you start. Then they are ready to smear and take less time to get flowing. There's also the chance to test the bleed on wet paper, and the granulating colors look so pretty when they dry.
Oh also, the quinacridone colors are pronounced like quinn-ack-rah-dohn.

All of the early ones actually are named after rocks/gemstones! Tigers eye, sugilite, fuschite, green apatite, etc are all very beautiful minerals/gemstones with vibrant colors ! and theyre pretty accurate imo. And wisteria is a very beautiful purple flower !
I'm not the biggest fan of seatching either, but not because it's tedious, but because of the fact, I use the paper I draw on.
Now I can't use it anymore, because there are swatches on it! Now I got to use a new piece of paper!

I love swatching. It's very calming for me to see how different mediums react to certain sketchbook paper. It's also a nice way to see which markers are dry to be honest 😆👌
Yeah gonna be honest, swatching isn’t the most captivating thing on the planet for me… but anything from Doodle date is worth watching! You know something awesome is always gonna happen (like the appearance of a plush pencil sharpener) 😂
I don't know if you'll see this, but interference colours are very interesting to me! They basically work by interrupting just one colour in the light spectrum, hence being called "interference" colours. If you mix all of them together they cancel each other out! I use them in resin so I'm not familiar with them as paints, but they're really fun to mix with other colours, especially dark ones.
Great video! I will say, I'm not a fan of swatching, I mean I do it sometimes if a swatch sheet is provided but I never even uses it. But I do enjoy watching people swatch, something about the repetitive motion is really relaxing.
As an artist I agree with Adam !!! I don’t swatch my new art supplies when I get them. When I want to use one of them in my art work, I swatch them just before using 😂 I’m a mixed media artist, so I can always make the colors work. But I just don’t see the need to swatch a new set of 120 pencils at the same time, or a new box of graphite/charcoal pencils as I already know how they will look

You were spot on with a lot of the mineral names. Apatite does sound like appetite. But sugilite is SOO gah lite, which I think sounds a little nicer than suh guh lite.

lol I'll agree with you, Adam. Ya girl Rachel thinks swatching is a waste of time EXCEPT if markers show up different colors than what's on the cap. And for that I usually do a little dot on the page to color test. I don't swatch. However, I love you guys. I am a superfan and will watch literally anything and everything that you put out. In the case that you read my comment, I would have to request more character creation videos though ^_^
I support you, Adam! I have about 150 colored pencils I only sketch with because I refuse to swatch them all. I know a ton have to go together well and would make a nice drawing, but no thanks. It's too overwhelming~ And colors do not look the same on all papers, so then I would have to swatch even more times... Not likely I`ll do that.
When it comes to expensive paints (Daniel Smith, Holbein, M. Graham, even some Windsor & Newton varieties here in the US), I like HAVE to swatch as I can just feel the dollars and cents disappearing with every wasted bit if I screw up on expensive paper on a big piece later on. Also cheap markers, because like hell the caps/samples on the box ever match on paper. At least there's Photoshop if I desperately need to tweak some colors, but as I get older, I like reducing my screen time as much as possible to...hmm...enjoy being in the moment of traditional mediums, I guess? Or perhaps I enjoy being lazy IDK *laugh*

When I first found you guys I was just starting to become interested in art and when I saw you guys always swatching I was like “oh my gosh I have to do this!!!” I took al of my crayola markers and swatched all of them lol,, I wasn’t the biggest fan of swatching but I enjoy watching you guys swatch it’s always very pretty :)

interference colors are better on black papers, and over other colors. They show differently depending on the color they're put over.
Saguaro is also a cactus. They're the big classic ones you see in cartoons, with the arms.
