Carved Milliput Pattern and Hope Carving Jig Review

  • In this video I show how I created a carved Milliput inlay pattern in a shallow bowl or dish that I turned from a sycamore blank.
    I also show my review of the Hope Carving Jig that I bought from Olivers Woodturning.
    Originally this video was also planned to be about colouring Millliput but after making the video I discovered that the pigment I used was toxic. I have deleted those scenes from the video and request that people do not ask me any more details on the process or materials that I used. I do not want anyone being misled and putting themselves in danger.
    This pattern would have worked extremely well with white Milliput and it would have been much safer !
    I will hopefully revisit this subject in a later video when I find some non-toxic pigments.
    ALWAYS CHECK WHAT THE COMPONENTS OF ANY PIGMENTS YOU BUY ARE !! MANY PIGMENTS, ESPECIALLY HIGHER QUALITY ONES, ARE HIGHLY TOXIC !!

    An absolutely stunning platter Jim, and I really enjoyed watching the technique you employed to achieve it. Full marks for stating the dangers of some pigment powder too, as I for one would not have realised.

    As always, Jim, a great and inspiring video. hope you are better and have no long term effects of the coloring agent. Thanks to your inspiration and work with Milliput, I was able to salvage a spalted maple bowl that almost became a fancy funnel! As I was trying to locate the center for remounting, I made a very small hole in the bottom. I repaired it by filling the recess for the chuck with black Miiliput. The hole was so small it didn't show up and after recutting the recess all was well! Thanks for your inspiration and work with Milliput.

    Love the bowl and technique. I am a potter who mixes my own glazes using raw pigments. As you say, some are dangerous (mostly toxic metals and metal compounds) and some aren't. In hospitals they use a technique to prevent disease transmission called "universal precautions." If you use proper precautions with all patients, you won't have to worry about which ones might be contagious. I always wear a high quality dust mask, eye protection, vinyl gloves and dust protection smock while mixing or working with pigmented materials. Wash hands thoroughly after and keep your food and drinks away from the raw pigment area too.

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  7 років тому

      Thank you Mudstacker. I wore gloves when mixing the pigment and always wear eye protection and a respirator when turning. I wouldn't have a problem using toxic pigments if I wasn't then putting them back on the lathe. The problem is the amount of fine dust produced when turning and the distance it travels around my workshop. I use high powered dust extraction and a workshop air filter but the dust still seems to get everywhere, the pigmented dust is easy to see ! I think I would rather just work with certified safe pigments and maintain a healthier working environment. Thank you for the great advice. All the best, Jim

    Hi Jim. I really like the pattern and love the final result. The jig looks really good too. A great idea, but I will have to try to forget I've seen it - if you know what I mean. Very scary regarding pigments and your advice could certainly help others avoid using dangerous materials.

    Hi Jim, another wonderful piece. Can I ask why your using slow set epoxy resin? I don't recall you you using it on other pieces. As you may recall, I am new to this artwork using milliput. I haven't used the slow set resin on any of the bowl work I've done using milliput. Will the inlay eventually fail because I've omitted using it?
    Glad you're okay after the colouring problems but I guess that's why rubbers are on pencils mate, we all make mistakes.
    Thanks for the video

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks again Richard, the reason I use slow set epoxy is mainly to extend the working time , fast set epoxy builds up heat with this sort of technique and sets far too quickly. Slow set epoxy is generally a bit stronger and more flexible and will soak into the grain a bit more giving a better bond.

    Hi Jim ~ Your videos are always excellent, this one is no exception. Nice bowl, well done video. Thanks.
    At some point take a look at the Trent Bosch carving jig. Much the same with only one handle that allows both rotation and angle adjustment. A contrast of the two might be interesting.
    Regarding the toxicity issue: Are you willing to share what you have found about the various pigments? Publicly would be great, but I understand if it must be via PM.
    Keep up the good work, and tousle the head of the child attached to that wonderful voice.

      I don't want to publish the name of the pigment as not all my viewers are English speaking and I don't want anything to get lost in translation. If you would like to know what the pigment was, you can PM me and I can then reply to you.

    Hello Jim that was an interesting video and I am very interested in how you colour Milliput. Although you mentioned that you dont want to name the pigment you used can you share with us the process at least .?

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  3 роки тому

      Sorry for the late reply, to colour milliput you need to first mix up a thick paste from slow set epoxy resin and lots of pigment powder and then mix this into some freshly mixed white milliput, but it is a messy job and difficult to achieve much more than a pastel shade. I tend to just use the available colours these days.

    • @Aspiecrafts
      @Aspiecrafts 3 роки тому

      Thanks Jim much appreciated. Don't know why they don't make other colours tho. I used mine on a carved garden gate and then covered in deep penetrating epoxy.

    A beautiful job Jim. Did you lay down any epoxy to aid adhesion of the black Milliput? I definitely want to try this type of project. This would be a perfect project to get my daughter and grandkids involved doing all of the squigging of the milliput! 😊

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  7 років тому

      Thank you very much Ron. Feeling much better now thanks. I would get your grandchildren to wear gloves, as it is possible to develop a sensitivity to epoxy, some people can find it irritating. I personally have never had a problem but best be safe with young hands, and of course lots of lung protection when cutting back. All the best, Jim

    Outstanding, Jim -- it's my new favorite. And thanks for the demo of the Hope carving jig. I've been limping along with a jury-rig cobbled together from a Panavise base and miscellaneous bits, and I'd been looking at a very nice, very pricey Trent Bosch jig. So, my friend, this one time you saved me money :-) Clyde

    Hi Jim, I love this project. I thought that I heard you say that you know how to color Milliput safely now. Is that true and are you going to share that with us? I also have a question about using sanding sealer. Do you do any sanding in between coats or before Yorkshire grit? I sand with 600 in between and sometimes get an inconsistent finish. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work.

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  7 років тому

      Thank you very much Ed. I do know how to colour milliput and will make a video one day. I just need to find a non toxic pigment powder and the time to do it. I usually use 2 coats of Chestnut Products Cellulose sanding sealer. I do add a little bit of cellulose thinners to it, approx 4:1 sealer:thinners. I only sand between coats if it feels rough, the Yorkshire Grit takes care of everything else. Put plenty of Yorkshire Grit on and work it well. Cheers, Jim

    • @JimsonMakes

      Thank you very much Osmo. Painting the resin in first was probably not necessary, Milliput is very sticky, but I was just making it extra strong to cope with the Dremel work.

      I think we should consider all dust to be harmful and take precautions but definitely avoid toxic stuff. To be honest I now just use the standard Milliput colours, it is just too messy trying to change them and there are infinite ways of creating designs from just 4 colours. Many thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment .

    That’s a lovely piece Jim. I’m curious, would mixing acrylic paint with the milliput work ?

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  6 років тому +1

      Thank you very much Chey. I don’t think it would, it would just make a sticky mess. The best way that I have found is to mix up a thick paste of pigment powder and slow set epoxy resin and then mix this with white Milliput but it is messy and needs a lot of pigment. The problem is that some of the best pigments are toxic. Cheers, Jim

    Would it make a difference if you heated the black milliput before putting it over the orange? I'm not talking about it running like a liquid, but to mabye the consistency of children's play doh. Beautiful bowl and pattern by the way.

    • @JimsonMakes
      @JimsonMakes  7 років тому

      Thank you James. The Milliput gets quite warm as you mix it and the black is relatively soft. I think it might get a bit too sticky if you warm it up and it might set a bit too quickly. I certainly make sure it is not cold before I start mixing it. All the best, Jim.

      Curious why Milliput is not made with more colors.. or additives to make more colors that would be safe. I should have added.. MSDS next time you have a product.. Example: Iron Oxide.. Google it.. you should see Iron Oxide and a series of numbers behind it. Copy & Paste and re-Google with MSDS you will get a PDF Doc. Showing everything about Iron Oxide.. Toxicity - Flammability everything MSDS Manufactures Safety Data Sheet every product made her in the states now has this..

      Thanks Garry for the advice. I think Milliput have optimised their market with the colours they produce, it is a well established product here in the UK and has been produced for many years. Milliput has many other uses and wasn't originally intended for Woodturning. I quite enjoy the challenge of the limited pallet. Perhaps as the Woodturning market grows, they may expand their range. All the best, Jim.

      Indeed, learned the hard way but I know what not to do next time. By the way I mentioned it ages back but have you thought of using Chalk Dust as a color agent, I'm not perfectly sure it would be safe but if finely ground down and I mean cooking Flour Fine it can work on clays miliput is a Epoxy clay if you think about it. But as I say only do it if safe and stay safe as you can with all this silly virals, I am glad you live in the UK because I trust the health care system there better than most of the US, leaps and bounds above our healthcare for sure.
      But even the best doctors are having trouble helping everyone, safe not scared am I right? Our families count on such things from us, your little one and wife and my dad and stepmother are the most important to think on for us. If you take my meaning and I hope you do.

      Jimson's Stuff absolutely. I did know about the toxicity of cadmium which the navy no longer allow as it used to be used as a coating on radio connectors. I’d suggest using EU manufacturers where possible and getting hold of safety data sheets from them as I believe anyone producing any form of chemical has to produce these in the EU. The Americans are also pretty hot on safety info so again reputable manufacturers should also be able to supply. Saying that I bought a French pigment recently and no sign of safety info anywhere so have discarded it. Chrome based stuff is probably best avoided too as are any with cyanide compounds that I’ve also seen used. Will pass on anything I find out.
