Thank you so much Jim for another great Milliput project. I'm in bad shape at the moment as I haven't created a shaving for about 6 weeks as we are in the process of moving house. We took possession of the property today and while my wife was busy in the kitchen I was in the garage which will never have a car but instead become my new workshop. I was dreaming of all the masterpieces to come:-). Alan.
Jim I wanted to thank you again for putting me onto the sander. I found a place here in the states and bought one of the Robert Sorby types. It was the best tool I've bought for my workshop in a long time. It eliminates the scratch marks from regular sanding in no time. Thanks again.
Thanks Col, yes my favourite bowl so far, perfect as a prize but one I would have otherwise kept. I have decided to call this pattern "Clownfish " and I will likely do some other turning projects with the same pattern. All the best, Jim
I like your bowls a lot, the milliput makes a real neat statement to top off some of the finest turning and finish to produce a top quality piece. Thanks for sharing your talent. Mitch
Awesome, truly superb work on that. You are very innovative and skilled in your wood turning. I think I am going to be looking at a lot of your videos today - so glad I found your channel. Thank you.
Thanks Glyn, I spend the whole project waiting for the reveal! The Yorkshire Grit works brilliantly with Milliput. I have decided to call this pattern Clownfish. Cheers, Jim
That bowl is just terrific I love it. Thanks for sharing your videos I some time look at 3 one after the other and when nr. is ended go back and start again. One evening/night my lady friend came and asked if I was coming to bed . it was about 3.30 in the morning and I had lost count of how many times I had watch the same videos. Safe and happy shavings. David.
Thank you David, I'm really glad you like what I do, I will hopefully continue making videos that you want to keep watching again and again. All the best, Jim
Hi Jim I gave up turning many years ago as there are only so many bowls you can turn, or that is what I thought until I came across your work.I love what you do and my new lathe is on order and so is the miliput. Keep up the good work, Bernard
I absolutely love this bowl, reminds me of native American Navajo designs...great video and final product!(I am very jealous of whoever ends up becoming the owner of this piece of art!)
Well presented videos giving a different dimension to woodturning. Thank you for inspiring me to try Milliput in order to give a new dimension to my work.
Thank you very much Philip, I’m delighted that I have inspired you to try something new. Mix it thoroughly, leave no voids and allow it to set properly before cutting back. Protect yourself from the dust, Yorkshire Grit cuts down on the fine dust. Cheers Jim
Sorry Heidi, I was at work when I replied and got distracted. Yes I was very pleased with the colours too, this is definitely my favourite pattern so far. It has really grown on me. Cheers, Jim
Gorgeous bowl! Loved the squidging as usual. :-) I can't believe you're going to give this one away in a competition. Jim, I think that the work you do is so artistic and unique that as long as you keep posting videos you will see your channel continue to grow. Watching what you do gives fellow wood-turners and artists inspiration and enjoyment. Thank you!
Thank you very much Diane for your very kind words, I really appreciate your continued support. The more I look at this bowl, the more I like it. I think it is my favourite so far, you never know for certain how they are going to look when finished. All the best, Jim.
Just come from Nick Zammeti’s channel after he worked on the Milliput, I’m so glad I’ve come across this, it is beautiful and you’ve come along way from the 5,000 subscribers, 11,000 plus, well done.
Thank you very much for coming across from my friend Nick’s place and thanks for watching . I’m delighted how my channel is growing. Thanks again, Jim.
fantastic work. I tried to do something similar to this years back in college in a wood working class i took on the side. This was kind of how I hoped it would turn out...Key word being HOPE. I think I overworked the mixing.
I have coloured Milliput but tend not to bother any more. The water works well but I only dampen my fingers, if you use too much it can form a coloured slurry that will soak into the surrounding wood. Thank you very much for watching Cheers Jim
Jim, That is a beautiful bowl and a great prize for someone. Thanks for videoing the process and sharing with everyone. I would like to ask a couple questions about your Robert Sorby hardwood scrapper. I have purchased one and when using get nothing but a bit of dust. I am scrapping just below the center line. I have not sharpened and would like your advise on the best way to sharpen. Thanks, Jim
Thanks Jim. The Robert Sorby hardwood scraper can be used several ways, Sorby say to use it rubbing the lower bevel and then raising the handle till it cuts, this works well on spindles and the outside of bowls but not so good inside bowls. Inside bowls you really need to be cutting at or a little above centre. The scraper needs constant light sharpening to achieve good results. I use the Robert Sorby Proedge with a ceramic belt to sharpen mine, I do it by setting the table at 80 degrees and sharpening the lower bevel. In time you occasionally have to sharpen the upper bevel as it wears back. I have reprofiled mine a little to make it more rounded, specifically for scraping these small enclosed bowls. Cheers, Jim
Thank you very much Lee. I have successfully dyed the white but it is a messy job, check out a couple of my earlier videos and I show how I do it. I used pure pigment powder and an epoxy carrier. Cheers, Jim
You are a wonder turner and teacher...Thank you for your video and instruction. I found thee colored milliput in the USA but no one ships Yorkshire grin in the USA. Any suggestions???
hello Jim i love it , it's superb, could you give me the measurements of this bowl i'll trying to turn the same, with certainly less of skill, thanks, alain France
Thank you very much Alain. I use parchment paper to stop the milliput sticking. I think the bowl measured approx 22cm diameter and 7.5cm deep Cheers Jim
I enjoy your presentation and your choice of projects. Thank you for not trying to "fill in" the audio with music, I much prefer either silence or just the sounds of the tools working. I used to play music when woodworking but I've grown to appreciate the relative quiet in the shop. Do you know if Milliput and Yorkshire Grit are available in the US?
Thank you very much Roger. Yes music in videos can be very annoying. The majority of the feedback I get seems to say that people prefer my commentary rather than music. Yorkshire Grit is distributed by the Walnut Log in the US and Milliput is distributed via Hobby Lobby but I believe is also available from Amazon. All the best, Jim.
Thank You, Jim - I found Milliput on Amazon and I'll check Walnut Log for the Yorkshire Grit. I absolutely agree with the feedback about your commentary, I was primarily referring to the times when you are shaping or hollowing on the lathe and there's really not much to comment upon. Beautiful work. Best Regards, Roger
Thank you Donald. Milliput itself is epoxy based and very sticky, so generally you don't need to use any other epoxy. There are occasions when a thin layer of slow setting epoxy painted onto the surface immediately prior to placing the putty may be of benefit, such as making a raised pattern with no recess, or when using it to fill cracks. Cheers, Jim
First let me say I happened on to your page by accident and I am so glad I did. Your work has been a inspiration to me. Jim, I looked thru a lot of comments but didn't see the answer to my question. I apologize in advance if you have already answered my question. Is that a air sander you are using and does it have a flex head? I have been trying to find something similar but haven't had any luck.
Thank you very much. The sander i use is the Simon Hope Pro sander. The head is rigid but there is a sponge layer to create a cushion. It is actually self powered, the head spins on a bearing and it is the rotation of the workpiece that makes it spin. You apply slightly more pressure to one side to get it spinning. ( it only works for Woodturning). It is a brilliant bit of kit. I tend to use it on the outside of bowls and a drill sander on the inside. I don't know which country you are in, but you can order them direct from Simon Hope Woodturning. There are other similar products made by Axminster and Robert Sorby, hope this helps. All the best, Jim
Thanks for the quick reply. I am in the U.S.A. I will do some research and see if it is available here, if not I will look at ordering overseas. Again Thanks.
Hi Jim, as always a great job. It looks great for turning the sycamore wood. One question, lately I am seeing many British and Canadian wood turners use Yorkshire grit and Hampshire sheen, Are new products in the market? Here in Spain at the moment are not. Thank you. Greetings.
Thank you Jose. Yorkshire Grit is brilliant and saves a lot of fine dust. It is made here in the U.K. And was released just over 6 months ago. I think they would ship to Spain, I have put a link to their website in the description on the video. Hampshire Sheen is also quite new and the product line is expanding, also excellent products, check the website oliverswoodturning. Cheers Jim
I use the fingernail jig, I will probably do a video on it at some point but I need to completely reorganise my workshop before I can do that. There are a couple of good videos on how to do it on the Robert Sorby channel. Cheers, Jim
Thank you very much Ben. I do virtually all my editing on my iPad using iMovie including most of the titles. Some more elaborate stills are done using apps called “font candy” and “Captions”. The voiceover is done using iMovie with the inbuilt microphone on the iPad. Cheers, Jim
Beautiful piece as usual! Quick question though: based on your experience using Yorkshire grit and Hampshire sheen, would you recommend those products on something like a pepper mill? Will the sheen finish last on something that is used every day? Thanks!
Thank you Gilbert, I have only used Hampshire Sheen on decorative pieces so far, so can't say for certain. The Yorkshire Grit is a finishing product as opposed to a finish, so will be good for peppermills but it contains oils so is not so good if you intend to use lacquer or varnish as a finish. Sorry can't be of more help. You could email Martin at Hampshire Sheen. Thanks again, Jim.
Thank you so much Jim for another great Milliput project. I'm in bad shape at the moment as I haven't created a shaving for about 6 weeks as we are in the process of moving house. Thanks Alan. Sounds like you need to get turning ASAP. Hopefully you will be up and running very soon now. Cheers, Jim
Great video. Got my sycamore and my milliput!! Away I go 😊
Have fun!
Jim I wanted to thank you again for putting me onto the sander. I found a place here in the states and bought one of the Robert Sorby types. It was the best tool I've bought for my workshop in a long time. It eliminates the scratch marks from regular sanding in no time. Thanks again.
That's great news, I'm glad i was able to help. All the best, Jim

Thanks Harmon, I'm glad you like what I do. Cheers, Jim

fantastic work. I tried to do something similar to this years back in college in a wood working class i took on the side. This was kind of how I hoped it would turn out...Key word being HOPE. I think I overworked the mixing.
Thank you very much Adam , yes it is easy to lose the pattern and definition if you over work Milliput. Controlled randomness is the key. Cheers, Jim
Beautiful Bowl. Congrats on 5000 subscribers.... I will take a shot 680.389 gr.
Thank you very much Stephen, glad you liked it. Cheers, Jim
Try using anything like food colouring ink etc. And mix with the white milliput. I use water on my fingers to smooth it out before drying
I have coloured Milliput but tend not to bother any more. The water works well but I only dampen my fingers, if you use too much it can form a coloured slurry that will soak into the surrounding wood. Thank you very much for watching

Excellent...

Thanks Adam, glad you like it. Cheers, Jim
nicely done your a master
Thanks Jeff for your very kind words. Cheers, Jim
Jim,
That is a beautiful bowl and a great prize for someone.

Drop dead gorgeous. You are the master. Can the white be dyed with any of the available dyes?
Thanks for sharing,

Thank you very much Lee. I have successfully dyed the white but it is a messy job, check out a couple of my earlier videos and I show how I do it. I used pure pigment powder and an epoxy carrier. Cheers, Jim
Amazing
videos like this makes me want to turn some wood. some day I will be able to.
Thank you Keith, Woodturning is certainly very therapeutic. Cheers, Jim.
For the past 2 months I have been watching wood turning. Just watching it is therapeutic. Cant wait to see what you turn next.
More videos coming soon Keith, Cheers, Jim
You are a wonder turner and teacher...Thank you for your video and instruction. I found thee colored milliput in the USA but no one ships Yorkshire grin in the USA. Any suggestions???
Thank you very much for your very kind words. Yorkshire Grit is distributed by the Walnut Log in the USA .
Cheers
Jim

Thank you very much Mexie Mex
hello Jim i love it , it's superb, could you give me the measurements of this bowl i'll trying to turn the same, with certainly less of skill, thanks, alain France
Thank you Alain. I can’t remember the size but I think it may be 9x4 inches
another question, the paper to roll the paste is a parchment paper? or other, it is necessary to avoid that the paste stick on the rolling pin?
Thank you very much Alain. I use parchment paper to stop the milliput sticking. I think the bowl measured approx 22cm diameter and 7.5cm deep
Cheers
Jim
I appreciate this is an older video but your tools are clearly wicked sharp. How do you get them to this level?
I use a Robert Sorby ProEdge sharpening machine, a fantastic bit of kit, and very easy to use. Thank you very much for watching
Cheers

Vous prenez quoi comme produits pour faire vos motifs ? C'est vraiment un superbe technique que j'aimerais testé
I make bowls, platters, spheres and goblets using this technique . Thank you for watching
Wonderful creation Jim. Do you ever have to use epoxy to hold the putty into the piece? Dp

Hi what you do with milliput is fantastic , I’m off out to buy some and have a go my self thanks 👍

I would like to see a video on how you sharpen your gouges on your Sorby sharpener.
I use the fingernail jig, I will probably do a video on it at some point but I need to completely reorganise my workshop before I can do that. There are a couple of good videos on how to do it on the Robert Sorby channel. Cheers, Jim
Very beautiful! Congratulations. What material you did you use to do detail at the edge?
Thank you very much Dario. The pattern is made from Milliput epoxy putty.
Cheers
Jim
Thank you very much Jim.
Awesome videos Jim, keep up the good work :)
What software do you use out of interest to edit your videos to add text and your voiceover?
Thanks

Would love to buy some small things!
Do you sell on Etsy?
Would a pizza cutter work to square the millipot blank?
Many thanks for watching Barry. Yes a pizza cutter does work on Milliput, just don’t forget to clean it before it sets.
Cheers
Jim
Jim Overton - Jimson's Stuff thanks a bunch. Love your vids.
wow, so the milliput actually stuck too the wood with no epoxy resin layer in between?
Yes Milliput is very sticky doesn’t always need additional resin, mostly I don’t use extra resin,
Cheers
