Woodturning a Celtic Knot Bowl

- Woodturning with resin - a different method. This is a wood turning video, but also shows some close up router work. I use my router to cut out a Celtic sailor’s knot pattern, pour in some resin, and then make a bowl. This bowl is a little bit out of the ordinary, with an undercut wide rim, inlayed resin, and even some pyrography. I hope you enjoy seeing it made, as much as I enjoyed making it!
At the end of this video, 13:20, the alternate winner for the Rosewood Bowl Giveaway is selected. That person does not have any contact information on their UA-cam channel, so I need them to contact me by Sept 19, 2018 via email with an address I can mail the package to.

You did it! I admit it, I squeeled in joy when I saw the thumbnail in my updates and saw Celtic knotwork in resin. I think I hit the button a bit too fast because I don't remember seeing the knot work around the edge lol. I pleasant surprise to me.I'm glad to have inspired you and the piece spoke to you. I, myself, am not a woodworker though I love it. I've not done Celtic knot work but heard from those that have that its complex and does challenge a person. This piece is a true work of art. (your pieces usually are ...but I'm partial to this one ;)
I really enjoyed this one, so thanks again for your previous comment/idea! I'm really glad you enjoyed it 😁

Your videos help me a lot when I’m in a foreign country from my heart thank you so much
@@RHumphrey This is an absolutely beautiful piece. Congratulations! You just earned yourself a new subscriber 😁 Also, just out of curiosity, how does one go about getting into woodworking and woodturning? I watch so many of these videos and have never really figured out what I want to do for a career (I'm almost 21, got my AA but stopped there), and I've always been very fascinated with different forms of art and creative processes. I love using my hands and don't mind getting dirty. I would love to know how to get into this as a career. Any tips?
There’s an old Native belief that for everything you create, a piece of your soul becomes a part of it. Perhaps that’s why you feel like you are a part of your art pieces? Beautiful bowl...
Thank you for that insight, Lynda. I think there's something to that... Much appreciated. 😊
I have to admit, I actually got chills down my back then my arms and legs at the end result after you completed the burning on the edge... You created a very beautiful piece of art. Functional and gorgeous. Just absolutely amazing! 💗
The colors contrast is awful. If wood would be a bit reddish or orange, the visual impact would be great
Yes Lynda ... particularly when working with symbols as here ... it's called sigil magik
For anyone who creates, art is part of us, and part of our souls. This is a beautiful piece that I have no adequate words to describe with.
You're very kind, thank you!
This product is absolutely amazing! The amount of detail that you so painstakingly put into it is so beautiful. I see the Shekinah Glory of God in this bowl. It is an absolute work of art! You should be very proud of yourself for building this. If you sold this whoever was able to buy it is very lucky. They now have in their collection of Rembrandt. Thank you Mr Humphrey for sharing everything that you do. I am in awe by this bowl!
"It sounds funny to say..." Well, it does, but then anyone who does anything like this understands that sentiment. And it's genuinely a lovely thing. Beautiful.
I think what you were talking about at the end - How these projects make you feel - is how we all feel watching your videos...
Ur voice actually sums up the "story telling". You took me back in time, to the future and back to the present. In short, impressive work!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Wow, I congratulate you on a wonderful piece. As a British born I can tell you now that any Celt would be proud to own that bowl.
You've retired from the fast paced world outside into the solace of your workshop. In doing so, you have paced that fast paced world to a pace that it can never match. For there is no match, ever, for the Infinity of inner artistry, as expressed without, in such passion; in such unbelievable workmanship. I'm not a wood worker. Yet, from your tasks, I've drawn life lessons. Thank you. I shall cherish this video; this lesson. God be with you in your labours.
Thank you very much for such a thoughtful and beautiful comment!
That’s fantastic. It’s always a pleasure to watch a skilled craftsmen at work.

First time I’ve your work and I must say you’re an incredible artist! I plan to start wood turning so I’ll be on your page often. I too am a Marine and don’t hesitate doing new things. Thank you for sharing your passion.
Welcome aboard, brother! I hope you fall in love with this craft just as I have! Semper Fidelis!
OMG. Your passion shows and your work is always awesome.
cynda99!!! You're the winner!!! Please send me an email!!!
YAY!!! I received your e-mail and have responded, your prize will be in the mail on Monday 😁😁😁
I love how thick it is! So many make their bowls so thin they look like they'll break some day. This has some girth, it's handsome and it's one of a kind! Amazing job 👍🏻
Absolutely stunning. This design links you to craftsmen like you well over a thousand years back. Not surprised you are emotional about it.
Wow!!! A museum piece!!! Gorgeous work, fellow Jarhead!! You inspire me to try wood turning!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Leatherneck!! Give it a try and you'll become quickly addicted tot he craft... in a very good way, the inner rewards of turning/making are hard to describe, but very worthy.
Wow!!!..Man, that is stunning work!! Just got a jab of the goose bumps such is the stimilus this work has provided. It must be the celtic spirits here in Ireland calling out. Thank you Mr for a wonderful woodturning project, thats just given me a world of ideas for my own shop. Thank you again, man I am pumped. Off to me workshop now. Greetings from the Emerald Isle.
Ps...just sub'd & that little bell is set!!
I REALLY love this design. You talked about being emotionally drawn in by the piece, I felt the same watching it being created.
That is nothing short of stunning! I’m thoroughly impressed!
Incredibly fascinating to watch and hear you describe the processes involved in transforming a doubtful piece of lumber into a beautiful work of craftsmanship. Really glad I found your channel. Looking forward to your next piece.
Thank you very much, and welcome! More coming soon, assorted projects, mostly wood turning :)
Now that turned out awesome!! I knew doing a Celtic knot would be hard but you made it look so easy. I guess a lot of that derives from the passion. Thank you for sharing
Thank you, much appreciated!

As an Irishman I'm delighted to see people use celtic knotwork in art, sometimes it can be a little easier to use knots where they don't quite run up to each line. To leave a small gap. This highlights the fact that each section of knot appears to go either over or under the next and would also be useful in wood carving. www.iconspng.com/images/celtic-knot-6-optimized/celtic-knot-6-optimized.jpg
@@BoyneShark thank you for sharing that. Something new to try!
I just watched this for the second time and got more out of it! Lovely!
Stunning mate! Finding solitude and peace in your work is a wonderful thing, all the best from Scotland 🏴
A work of love and inspiration - simply beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing!
Great work I love all the aspects that you bring to the project. This also gives me lots of ideas for some of my projects. Thanks
You're welcome, and thank you!
I love that you have a connection to your pieces. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful!! I love it, thank so much for sharing. Your passion definitely shows through and has sparked mine. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your outstanding craftsmanship.
The feeling one gets when you lose yourself in your craft creating a piece of art from concept & watch it come to life before your eyes is the ultimate reward.
Keep up the awesome work. 👍 🇺🇸
Thank you, very well put and I completely agree!
The knot represents unity and strength, so therefore your heart and soul was naturally tied to this project and the beauty and detail has shown through.
Thank you Michael, I appreciate that very much! 😊
Of course you’re emotionally invested, you are recreating your history and the passion you put into it reflects in the stunning outcome. Thank you for sharing this, I have only just discovered your channel, have subscribed. 🙏🏻
Wow, that is breathtakingly beautiful, thank you for persevering and sharing. I am honoured!🙏🤗
Hello Rod. I think this is your most creative work I've seen to date. You have a terrific imagination. My sister does free hand sketching/doodling and I've asked to to watch this and see if she can overlay a sketch and follow your method of bringing her sketch to life in a bowl of her own. Just amazing and beautiful.
Excellent, I'd love to see it if she does. Thanks very much, I appreciate that :)
I find the more unexpected effort I put into any project; the more I like the results. I find the “errors” become character statements. Something I learned from my great grandfather while he wood carved. His old Sears Craftsman lathe (about 50 years old) is what I use. When I start getting more confidence and consistency out of my projects I’ll get something bigger and more stable. But, until then your videos and comments keep me in the garage trying new things. Thank you.
I appreciate your comment on many levels, but mostly that you're carrying on a family craft, and using an heirloom tool...wonderful!!! Confidence comes with doing just as you are! Thanks very much!
Tempest Luke - there is a Japanese view that embraces imperfections called *_wabi-sabi_* that is based on the Buddhist tenant of _impermanence._ I also enjoy pieces that have some flaw as they have more character than a _”perfect”_ piece would, so you’re not alone in that thinking !!
orion khan now I need to practice saying wabi-sabi. So when I say it people will think I know what I am talking about! Lol.
Thank for your follow up. It is always good to know that I am not alone in some of my thinking.
I'm happy you shared this to us. Amazing!!!
I don't subscribe to many channels on UA-cam. I tend to gravitate to quality over quantity. When I do subscribe it's because I see the passion each has for what they are doing and their love for it. You are a fine example of that.
It's beautiful, you do such amazing work
Thanks very much!
I agree you can get lost when turning, very nice bowl too, well done 👍
Thank you very much!
I so love this video. I have watched it many times!! Love to hear your comentary too! God Bless you!!
I absolutely love this beautiful piece of living art 😍
Thank you for sharing the process of giving a second life to that wood 🌱
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I'm just getting started tomorrow in my first turning class. Floating around UA-cam and came across the Celtic Knot bowl Amazing combination of your artistic skills and talent. Very inspiring
Thank you very much! That's great, enjoy the process and happy turning!!!
The most beautiful bowl I have ever seen💕🇦🇺💖
Wow, thank you very much!! .😊
Oh my goodness that looks fabulous. It’s very beautiful. Thank you for sharing your videos with us all.
Really great job. Putting so much emotion in everything you do makes it more fulfilling.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Your passion most _definitely_ shines through... it is a *beautiful* piece that’s an obvious *_labor of love..._* I really dig the pyrography around the rim !!
Something I cobbled together that you may (or may not) want to try... at the local _”I’ll buy that for $1”_ type stores you can often find slightly milky, but mostly clear (we want the most transparent possible) bowls with a pronounced rim in various sizes. I’ve amassed a collection of various sizes which I’ve coupled with the airtight (not the cheap spongy stuff) automotive weather stripping, some mildly thick (5mm+) acrylic sheet, several hoses and fittings from my local hardware store (along with Teflon tape and silicon sealant) and (you might see where this is going) a $30 vacuum pump from the internet. Line the rim with the weather strip, cut a round (tho in some cases squares and rectangles help for _”things to attach rubber bands to”)_ of acrylic and epoxy it to the outside bottom of the bowl so it’s airtight, drill a hole through the acrylic and bowl for the hose fittings in the bottom, fit said fittings and hoses, little door-latch hooks can be handy for rubber bands to hold things down (again lots of sili-con-carne) et voila !! A relatively inexpensive vacuum chamber for inlaid/odd shaped/too large for a pressure vessel resin pours !! It is *_remarkable_* how frothy the resin gets when you first start to drop the pressure, so a little back and forth finesse is required to keep things going, but I’ve *_definitely_* noticed a _significant_ difference in the quality of the resin... the lack of teeny-tiny bubbles keeps the color closer to what I initially was going for.
Just thought I’d pass that along... it definitely adds a bit of _”The A-Team”_ and _”MacGuyver”_ to my time in the shop !!!
I appreciate the tip, and the time you spent passing it on 🙂
It's beautiful and inspiring! I shared it with my son in hopes he may make one - thank you for sharing 🤗😊
Thank you very much!
Whoa! That turned out great. I’ve been watching lots of these wood & resin turning channels, but this project was truly original. Congrats!
This is gorgeous! Also I think I have learned more from seeing this one video where you are explaining and describing the tools so well than on any video of this sort that I have seen. I really appreciate that you take the time to do that, and I find it very admirable that you have such a passion for your craft. Truly impressive work, despite your doubts.
Beautiful piece of art.
Thank you!
you are one very talented man this is amazing, hand made is always better, the time trouble feel and love for the craft always show's thank you for sharing.
Thanks very much! 😊 You're very kind!
