Shouldn’t Blue Mountain Mystery count as a finale for the Nitrogen Era? It’s Micheal Angelis’s last narration work after being the narrator for 14 seasons, a record that’ll never be broken any time soon.

The Great Discovery manages to handle so many elements, not only because it has a baseline reason to gather a team of vehicles together, but because the plot structure, *allows* this requirement, using the 'But' and 'Therefore' to connect story beats together
Thomas is working near the NG engines, common thing for him during the HIT era
    *But*
Duncan convinces him to go over a bridge. Thomas narrowly gets off the bridge before it collapses
    *Therefore*
He takes a different route to attempt to get to his destination which leads to him discovering Great Waterton
The Fat Controller decides to restore the town
    *But*
    Its overgrown and abandoned
    *therefore*
He calls upon the Pack and practically every engine to assist
The narrow guage engines fit in nicely with this, as it was clearly shown Great Waterton is located fairly near them, therefore, giving their appearances relevance, similar to the Arlesdale trio in Lost Treasure. They may not physically appear at the project, but they're situated so near to it that naturally they'd be involved in the work regardless
*Point is!* There is a legitimate reason for a wide variety of characters to feature. Conversely, I love that Blue Mountain Mystery had the restraint to withold having the entire Steam Team at the quarry for instance. None of them were needed, because it wasn't a 'Large scale everyone on board!' Story
Good analysis, especially glad you had the confidence to address the RWS's bumpy ending. If it wern't for Pip and Emma, I'd honestly consider Thomas & Victoria to be the RWS finale given how better connected the stories are
    *Remembers random Daisy story*
    ....mostly

For me, the series should have ended in The Great Discovery.
Not only is it full of satisfying fan service, the plot is also very interesting, Thomas is perfectly in character, they got big name Pierce Brosnan to narrate, it has some of the most incredible crashes and action scenes in the entire model era, and it is actually pretty well written for the most part. I’m also incredibly thankful they dumped the learning segments from this movie.
It’s one of the few Thomas Movies that does feel like a finale.

Funnily enough, I had made a poll on Twitter about what is the true finale to the Thomas & Friends TV Series, and by no surprise everyone voted The Great Discovery and rewatching that movie again, I pretty much can agree on a high note that it truly felt like a perfect end to Thomas in general (the models maybe, but for the entire show and how Thomas came this far as a character and all his friends).
For the other finales, here are my thoughts:
Three Cheers for Thomas: Great finale to the original Thomas series before the HiT era
Royal Engine: It's bittersweet, but I can still enjoy it for what it is.
Centenary: An okay story, but could've been better. The entire book is a mix-bag, but Gordon's retirement is a great factor that should've been the main focus.
So yeah, Great Discovery esthetic wins as a finale to Thomas, his friends and the world of Sodor as a whole.

You know, it's ironic that Three Cheers for Thomas and Royal Engine served as pretty good finales as when they were written I don't think there was an intention that their era of the TVS would be over as there were plans of a Season 25 and Three Cheers for Thomas was probably written before the HiT buyout.

Thomas the Tank Engine Series was one of my oldest childhood memories and since then I love both the models and the CGI. It's a shame that the CGI Thomas and Friends series has coming to the end because I would to see continuing visiting other countries a bit more as he hasn't have a chance to visit American, Germany, France, Mexico, Berlin, and Japan as well as meeting the other engines featuring in "Thomas and Friends The Great Race" like Vinnie, Frieda, Axel, Ivan, Etienne and Carlos. But sadly it's not going to happen now no thanks to Mattel.

'On a truck'. Just a bit of food for thought, but perhaps James had a goods train which had the truck containing the bust on it?
As much as I like the Great Discovery and the Royal Engine to a certain degree, I have more nostalgia for Three Cheers For Thomas as it was on a DVD I had when I was four. The simplicity of it honestly captures the beauty of the classic series. Nothing grandeur, nothing thematic, just Thomas being Thomas and making an ongoing tease come full circle.

I think there are a few finales that were missed. Mainly Not so Slow coaches as the finale to the Brenner era and Tramway Engines as the finale of Wilbert's books. Special mention to Duke the Lost Engine as well as it was Wilbert's intended finale to the RWS.
I think overall Not So Slow Coaches ranks above 3 Cheers For Thomas because it feels more like a finale. Spencer and Gordon's rivalry is put to rest after 15 seasons and the ending shot only solidifies that.
Whilst I like Tramway Engines as a book I think as a finale it is the weakest not really feeling like a finale at all.
And then of course there's Duke the Lost Engine whilst it doesn't technically count I believe is the best finale in the franchise. It is not only in my opinion the best book of the Railway Series but ties off all the loose ends Wilbert setup in his previous books.

In all seriousness, good work here! This is a nice little video. I'd almost argue that seasons 1 and 2 both have 'finales' in the Christmas episodes, though I think the four you picked here are all good choices.
I also totally stand by the notion that 'Stop Thief' should've been the last season 7 episode, since that ending line from Sir Topham Hatt is just...so good.

Personally I would divide the CGI into 3 finales - one for each era of writing. 13-16, 17-21, and 22-24. Same way Classic is typically broken into 1-5 and 6-12. (Occasionally 6-7 and 8-12 as well)
11:52 waaait a minute. You don’t remember they wrote out Edward in season 21? And Henry disappeared for the seasons too. Seasons 22-24 are generally frowned upon

I feel that The Royal Engine would've been more iconic if it was Gordon, Henry and Edward taking the Fat Controller to London and meeting the Royal Engine instead of Thomas as the purpose of the special was to be an anniversary thing for the first book in The Railway Series. You could still have Thomas included in the story, maybe he's asked to come with them because the little boy requested he should come.

In my identical memory here's how SiF organized the Classic Series when they used to have the episode guide. Seasons 1 and 2 were the same, Season 3 put Thomas Gets Bumped before Gordon and the Famous Visitor and Donald's Duck presumably as a reference to home media, Season 4 made Four Little Engines come after A Bad Day For Sir Handel and Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady. I can kind of make Four Little Engines come first work but it coming after the previous episodes I listed more or less does work better while the episodes Henry and the Elephant, Toad Stands By, Thomas and the Special Letter and Paint Pots and Queens all played musical chairs of sorts, Season 5 was structured about the same except Snow comes before Rusty and the Boulder, and I think Rusty and the Boulder really was the kickoff to Magic Railroad with all the action and chase and originally when we got this episode in the US there was a trailer for the movie on Spills and Chills. Next came Season 6 where they made the Jack 2 parter come first then The Fogman, Salty's Secret, Harvey to the Rescue, No Sleep For Cranky, A Bad Day For Harold the Helicopter, Elizabeth the Vintage Lorry, Twin Trouble, Gordon Takes a Tumble, Percy's Chocolate Crunch, The World's Strongest Engine, Middle Engine, Thomas the Jet Engine, Buffer Bother, the standard gauge episodes from Brave Little Engines all together in their exact order, It's Only Snow, Jack Frost and the final three episodes featuring the Skarloey engines were the same. For Season 7 they started off with the episodes from Happy Little Helpers where they put you guessed it Three Cheers For Thomas first not last despite it being fine for a season and classic series finale, and I would've done the same, then they added Gordon and Spencer, What's the Matter with Henry, the three episodes from the second half of Thomas and the Jet Engine release in America except they put Salty's Stormy Tale before Bulgy Rides Again, then Best Dressed Engine, Bill, Ben and Fergus, Fergus Breaks the Rules, Peace and Quiet, The Spotless Record, Something Fishy, The Grand Opening, The Old Bridge, Rheneas and the Roller Coaster, The Refreshment Lady's Tea Stand, Trusty Rusty, The Runaway Elephant and Not So Hasty Puddings as the series finale. This order really does have a nice ring to it even though my episodic choices after Season 2 are a little different yet sometimes just the same as them.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do like Series 24, but being series finale, I was not very happy to see why it ended. As for Series 25, yes, I would love to see that series, if the show does gain a twenty fifth series, but sadly however, it got cancelled due to that ridiculous reboot series ‘All Engines Go!’. And btw! I have watched “What Happened Next?! Thomas Series 25 Continued” and I’ve gotta say, I really like your ideas! I feel like that’s the finale from Audreys work I could be wrong I grew up with the hit era to be honest, but I do admire the original much more but I’m not as experienced with it then a lot of other fans, but basically, it just feels like a finale. I can’t say 100% should be a finale by remember watching it as a kid and being much more interested in it than the other episodes, and it felt like it had a spice to it. That was much more entertaining is the only way I can describe it and just the way the story is like I believe in earlier in the season was when Mrs. kindly was introduced by saving Thomas, from an avalanche, and I know there’s another episode of wrapped around her, and then her daughters getting married, which honestly to me feels like a finale. If there’s anyone more experienced in the fandom tell me if you agree this is the finale or not I’m going off of muscle memory right now and just how I felt about that episode.

I still feel in many ways Journey Beyond Sodor was very finale coded, especially the final song, just felt very much like closure on the story…..

Tale of the Brave could have been the finale tbh.

I heard some say that for the Royal Engine, it would've been better if Edward was also specially requested alongside Thomas. I honestly wonder how that would work for pulling STH's coach? Would Thomas just pull it with Edward following behind or vice versa? Or would've it made more sense if Thomas and Edward double-headed the coach?

In my opinion Calling All Engines is the perfect finalle to Thomas, and TBH the show should have ended after CAE

It was my finale. Because it came out at the time when my parents made me outgrow Thomas so that was the last Thomas media I saw for about 16 years.

I do not know why I am asking you this. But I do want to question. What problem is there with Gordon retiring in the last book of the Railway Series? The reason for it is quite simple and I am not sure if you have read the book for yourself (or if you have a copy of it at all), but I wonder why you questioned Gordon's retirement from pulling the express in the last book of the Railway Series if the reason was the obvious. Was it because of some dumb time gap that didn't need to be there for that many years for Gordon to retire from the express?
And with you questioning the tunnel collapsing, Donald and Douglas crashing into buffers, the swan's injury, or a piece of hay catching fire. I am not sure what to tell you. Are you questioning them because you couldn't help but find something contrived about these last four stories of the books or are four of these plot points actually just plot holes for the sake of a plot to happen? I wasn't sure why you asked about those ideas. The tunnel collapsing, I really am not sure why and it's been a good long while since I heard narrations from any of these four stories. Though, I doubt I will even plan on listening to the audio story of "Buffer Bashing" because of the mean-spirited ending with Douglas getting blamed for an accident beyond his control. I'll be honest with you. Neither the Railway Series or the TV series had a good ending for both of the Scottish Twins. "Buffer Bashing" may have been a terrible story for them to wrap up their time in the books. But in terms of the TV show, they had it worse in "Emily in the Middle". And I am sure everyone knows why the Fat Controller sent James to collect the bust of Wilbert Awdry, so I'm not really bothered to say it here.

Royal Engine was very golden for the CGI Era. :)
I laughed so much when Percy zoomed by The Thin Clergyman as like with Ace in the BWBA movie was a hilarious way of saying "f u" to the audience and Sir Topham Hatt showering with his hat on and him having a closet filled with hats that are the same color and shape. 🎩👑😂👍🖕
9:14: I never ever noticed Diesel 10 making a cameo in "The Great Discovery"! :O
I also liked that a man who does James Bond got to narrate this movie. 😊😎👍
    4:57: Don't you mean "hoor-ay" for Thomas?
