There will never be anything like it again. If you happened to work in an office in 2001 and watched this when it aired, then it hits even harder. Utterly timeless.
It's a work of genius but after working since this came out (at the time it seemed really real) I now see it as fiction - Brent would have been a real bully rather than a tw*t - he would have never been fired - Gareth would have been promoted - Tim would have been hated as a negative, stuck up guy and a creep - until he had burn out and left - Dawn would have married her boyfriend and become just another office gossip. After years The Office just seems too tame.
Most esp. not even close to being rivalled by the pale, insipid US version, so often mere silly rather than funny., and with too-stupid-to-believe-could-be-real characters. Yet I've watched many a Yank try to claim that crap is better.
The American writers and directors took this piece of art and concluded: “we are just going to have Jim look at the camera all the time. That’s the essence of the office right? “
I escaped that life before it began. Had an interview for an office job, but it required at least a button up shirt, proper shoes and trousers that are not jeans or cargo pants/combats for the interview. I told them 1 hour later I took a different job offer, and sorry but will not be there. From what I hear, I dodged a bullet.
I'm reminded of Keith's personal appraisal interview every time I see US cop-cam videos where the cop tries to explain the sobriety tests. "9 heel to toe steps then swivel on the spot and ...". "Do I count 1 for each foot". "No. Do you want me to explain it again?". "Yes please".
Script by Gervais/Merchant so strong throughout. All unfamiliar actors and actresses, who were superb no matter how big the part. Think R.G. ' s acting for someone more versed in stand - up is vastly underrated. When doing big Keith's appraisal, his reading the form and contained exasperation are faultless.
One of my favourite but subtle moments was when Dawn had a falling out with her boyfriend and one of the girls comes up to her and the conversation goes like this "Dont cry babe, now you can do anything you want." "You're right, Ill have time to travel to europe, learn a language...." 'I mean, sleep around."
I think it's always gonna be a case of you're from the UK this version is the best, and if from the states then the other way round. The UK version is definitely the better of the two. Although I'm from Ireland so def get this one better 👍
The worst thing is that office work has become even more frustrating, mundane and laughable in the twenty years since this aired. I recently had this conversation at an appraisal: "What do you think diversity brings to a team". Me: "diversity".

The only thing this vid was sorely lacking of was the end of the third part, with Gareth being the butt of the joke but leaning in, in such a wonderfully awkward way.
I must admit when I was 11 I had the biggest crush on the secretary I think her name was Dawn. She was just so pretty to me and I would watch it just to see her.
It's a totally different type of show. I love them both. UK is lo-fi, gritty, under-performed and cerebral. US is farcical, blatant and occassionally slapstick. The only thing they both have in common is the excellent character arcs.
I stomached about 1 minute of the American version.... they always try to copy a format that works and balls it up.....the office is a genius comedy to which most brits will relate to
The IT guy is the weakest character in the show in my opinion. I've encountered thirty or forty IT guys in offices and yes some of them have been a bit weird, but this guy was like a cartoon character. It's one of the least realistic scenes.
They have definitely not gone too far? They simply created a new benchmark for comedy. Maybe only nearly rivalled by The Inbetweeners. And perhaps Breeders.
Every moment is too real. That's what makes The Office hilarious and depressing at the same time
You're the w****-er mate if anyone is!
What have you been on before, nothing, so don't--
How do you think that went?
it's real because rick gervais is actually this repulsive

Gotta love Keith. Quiet quitting years before it was a thing! 😂😂😂
"Gone off Dawn now av’ya" -"0h he’s done him again, play a record"
"Do you remember what the question was?" "Nah." kills me every time. Hilarious!
This is a masterpiece. Unrivalled to this day.
Sorry, Fawlty Towers.

10:12 Neil's being a proper arse here, though. Seen one or like him in my office days too 😂
I think we can all identify with the characters. I had friends who just didn’t get it though and that’s because they had never worked in an office.
You don’t have to have worked in an office to get it. I work in construction and these characters are all found on sites too.
Martin Freeman's face in the last clip: priceless.
The IT guy is a genius. Crushes everyone without mercy, without breaking a sweat.
Garth Marenghi!
As someone with Asbergers I think he is a hero. I love correcting people when they get things wrong
