I thought its the casting director who does this and if so, how can I get a career being a casting director. I got my bachelor's degree in films. I'm in Austin Texas.
Dwight is the only character that I couldn’t see played by anyone else. Jim and Pam are straight characters, they could have been played by a lot of people. Odenkirk’s Michael would have been different, but I think after a season or two they would’ve made him great. All the other characters were perfect, but at the same time they’re background characters so you can cut a character, or completely change the character to fit an actor’s skill set. Dwight was set up to be a top 3 character from the beginning, and clearly had a very intentional personality. As much as I love Patton and Judah, they’re just not Dwight.
I love how Steve Carrell somehow made the interviewer laugh ten seconds into the audition. He didn't even know how he did it, or if he did then he just put on a forgetful persona. That's exactly the kind of energy they needed for someone playing Michael, effortlessly funny even when he's putting in too much effort.
Nobody could play Dwight like Rainn. I love his almost angry intensity. I feel like the other actors auditioning didn’t know what to do with the character.
On the flip side, this makes me think about Benedict Cumberbatch in the Sherlock pilot. He was _so_ different in that compared to the ensuing series. You never know how these guys' interpretations would've changed.
Yeah I like Bob odenkirk but no, Carell all the way. Carell also does that type of "looking around smiling" thing naturally. If you see him in interview, he's very similar to how he acts Also the lady who audition Pam, was a comedian and it wouldn't fit right.
I feel like everybody else's version of Dwight is kinda like "yeah listen I'm a smart guy here". But Rainn gives out the vibe of self assured, eccentric, kind of try-hard authoritive attitude. Which is why he absolutely nailed the role.
When he says "it's kind of a filler word... what context did I use it in ?" I lost it. It was unreal to see that from the audition. It's like he's already been playing Michael for longer than they created the character. They thought they were auditioning, but they actually just walked in Michael Scott's office.
The difference for Jim’s character is that the other guys made him serious, boring, tired and almost depressed, but John came up with a charming, lively, witty version who’s just bored of doing what he does and he prefers talking about other stuff and make things more fun, and maybe that’s why he does pranks etc.
Seth Rogan's Dwight was politely explaining to you why urinating is a legitimate way to clean a wound, while Rainn Wilson's Dwight was just annoyed that you don't know what he thought was common sense. Wilson was the perfect man for the job lmao.
You think that because you're looking as if these other actors were trying to be the Dwight you know (and not the Dwight of the original script). Of course nobody could do it better If your criteria is "who is like the Dwight I already know/like?".
Rainn turned this up to 11 whilst everyone else was doing average dry lackluster comedy. He must have also researched Gareth from the UK office, same clothes and playing that personality in his way.

Everybody grew into their iconic characters but Steve and Rainn were Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute from the moment they auditioned. Phenomenal actors.
I think John had a fantastic audition too. Looking at the others they were a little flat...it's a real talent to be able to deliver lines but make them seem so off-the-cuff and imperfect like they were supposed to in those talking head segments.

The casting really nailed Jim. This video didn't show much for the other two that auditioned but even still they were very stiff. In John Krasinski's audition, forgetting the extra props he's given, he moves around a lot more. I especially love his facial expression after saying how boring it was. It gives the vibe that he's a fun guy but this job is holding him back.

They probably didn't have the budget for all of these actors. They usually pick a few A listers/Hollywood people to prop up the show and bring in fans of of actors.

It's very interesting, because the others all went with a more down-to-the-earth, "realistic" interpretation of Dwight: the lonely, creepy weirdo that nobody likes to talk to because he always goes on about government conspiracies and obscure Pennsylvanian laws that would allow him to kill the entire office in self-defense if they so much as touched his stapler. Rainn meanwhile went in a totally different direction by making Dwight this over-the-top, self-righteous, intense lunatic, a very cartoonish character, which has worked beautifully, especially when developping that Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd relationship with Jim.

There’s a really incredibly bad early 90’s Australian movie called reckless Kelly. She basically plays Jan Levinson in that movie aswell. And Hugo weaving basically plays agent smith in it. I’d say don’t watch it. But also watch it. Only once.

I liked the last guys audition too, but Rainn just has something about him that just screams KYAAAA Dwight karate moves. And you can’t even imagine how hard it must’ve been to choose anyone either, especially with these really bored sounding lines
Fun fact: Angela Kinsey's audition at 3:33 was actually for Pam. Instead, they rejected her and gave the role to Jenna Fischer, while Angela got the role for, well, Angela.

the face expressions of Dwight, Michael, Jim and Pam are literally the same as they played throughout the show. they are amazing and they added so much to their characters
for his rendition of dwight, yes he was. but the reality is that dwight played by any other actor would have been written mugh differently. good writers and directors play off of how the actor cast in a role interprets that character. we're seeing many different interpretations of the same basic instructions for dwight's character before dwight was fine-tuned for rainn wilson's strengths and interpretation
to have that many talented actors audictioning and decline many of them afterwards only demonstrate that the frontrunners had a clear mind of what the show needed to be good.
The writers and casting directors definitely weren't sellouts. They picked people that were totally unknown (John Krasinski was a waiter with no career at the time) over well-known actors. They knew the show would sell itself.

@@shatterpointgames I would say the main difference is that all the other actors tried too hard do be weird in a funny way. They just overshot the target. Dwight was on point with being weird, serious and creepy at the same time without looking like a "clown" or an obvious actor.
Bob Odenkirk would've made a fantastic Michael Scott! But casting him would've gone in the direction of comedy that's self-aware. What I love about Steve Carrell's portrayal is that I, as a viewer, am always in disbelief and saying, "Is this dude for real?!" LMAO
I think Bob Odenkirk would've been an excellent choice as well. However, it would have certainly been more like the British original or the German adaption.

I like Bob Odenkirk but I feel like his version of Michael Scott is a bit more...sleezy. Like some of the stuff Michael says, it would make you feel super gross if it was delivered wrong. Steve does it in a way that reminds you of a little kid - just blurting out whatever he thinks with no malice or creepiness.
At first, I was like ok, Jim's character is simple, and the guys auditioning did a good job. Basically any decent actor can pull off this role. But then came in John Krasinski and showed that how wrong I was. He just became Jim and I didn't feel like I was watching an audition clip, it felt like a real life talk
To me the only really big one was Dwight, I think Jim could have been played by dozens of actors actually. It would not have been the same Jim ofcourse.

He knows he's just selling paper, and that it is a boring job, but it is not completely bored by that, on annoyed, or angry, because he sees something funny/ironic in the situation. That's what I've seen here in John and not in the other guy (they did not showed the entire audution of the asian guy, so I can't say how he was)
I've rewatched this series multiple times. I feel like I was apart of their family because of the connection you have with the actors. It's 1 of the best comedy series I've ever seen.

Jan's audition was Immaculate!🌟 She nailed her role throughout. I think a lot of the characters were the actors' creation. So it is amazing how they all painted their own version.

For the most part. Meredith’s and Stanley’s character roles changed throughout the episodes, as did Kevin’s intonation and level of Idiocracy. But even among those three I wouldn’t want to see anyone else play Kevin. I thought it was interesting how bad Jim’s audition was in comparison to the others yet they went with him. His pauses were far too long, reminded me of a 101 college acting class.

I'll raise you one more: The Office wouldn't have been what it was if Carell hadn't auditioned the way he did. He's playing Michael from season 2 onwards in that clip, not the one from season 1. It's like the producers rewatched that audition later during production and went "Yeah, let's go with that instead".
Pam and Dwight both nailed the characters. Pam's lines were so agonizing, because we all feel that at work with the choices we've made. She owned it. Michael and Jim got it too.

Rainn Wilson is the only one there who actually understood what Dwight needed to be. The others played him too weak or laid back, Dwight needs to be *Intense* and *Focused* for Dwight to work.
Melora Hardin is so incredible as Jan. You can tell she means business! And then the character arc reveals that she's just as messed up as everyone else. It's perfect.
It's so hard to be objective about casting when these characters have become canon and part of our lives. But it really feels like nobody could have come close to playing Dwight like Rainn did. Absolutely nailed that audition.
Dwight K. Schrute is literally one of the Top 10 greatest TV characters of all time and that was 75% Rainn. The writing for him was hilarious but so much of it would've fell flat without his flawless delivery. And he naturally LOOKED the part too.
Allison Jones is a fucking genius. She also cast Parks and Rec, What We Do in the Shadows, and some of the best shows of the past 2 decades. She's a starmaker.

I think some of the other actors could’ve done well like Bob Odenkirk, but he would’ve been a very different Michael, and he was born to play Saul Goodman. The Office was perfectly casted.
Bob Odenkirk was having a hard time getting a role and was broke, until he finally became Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad. Now imagine if he became an iconic manager instead of an iconic lawyer. Bob now has an own show of himself.

Was great that they brought Odenkirk in for an episode as "another Michael". For me, he is the closest 2nd choice out of these. Still nowhere near the OG Mike, but was perfect for that episode.
Odenkirk could’ve done a very good Michael tbh. Could completely see it, he’s a natural. Ok satisfied with Steve, would’ve been satisfied with Odenkirk. Yet we probably wouldn’t have had Saul in BB, and wouldn’t have had the spin off. So everything worked out for the best I guess!

Everybody grew into their iconic characters but Steve and Rainn were Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute from the moment they auditioned. Phenomenal actors.
I think John had a fantastic audition too. Looking at the others they were a little flat...it's a real talent to be able to deliver lines but make them seem so off-the-cuff and imperfect like they were supposed to in those talking head segments.

The casting really nailed Jim. This video didn't show much for the other two that auditioned but even still they were very stiff. In John Krasinski's audition, forgetting the extra props he's given, he moves around a lot more. I especially love his facial expression after saying how boring it was. It gives the vibe that he's a fun guy but this job is holding him back.

Rainn Wilson was just perfect for Dwight's character.
It's very interesting, because the others all went with a more down-to-the-earth, "realistic" interpretation of Dwight: the lonely, creepy weirdo that nobody likes to talk to because he always goes on about government conspiracies and obscure Pennsylvanian laws that would allow him to kill the entire office in self-defense if they so much as touched his stapler.
Rainn meanwhile went in a totally different direction by making Dwight this over-the-top, self-righteous, intense lunatic, a very cartoonish character, which has worked beautifully, especially when developping that Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd relationship with Jim.

for his rendition of dwight, yes he was. but the reality is that dwight played by any other actor would have been written mugh differently. good writers and directors play off of how the actor cast in a role interprets that character. we're seeing many different interpretations of the same basic instructions for dwight's character before dwight was fine-tuned for rainn wilson's strengths and interpretation

The writers and casting directors definitely weren't sellouts. They picked people that were totally unknown (John Krasinski was a waiter with no career at the time) over well-known actors. They knew the show would sell itself.

Alt Pam felt more exhausted, while casted Pam felt short of confidence, which is what Pam should have been.
At first, I was like ok, Jim's character is simple, and the guys auditioning did a good job. Basically any decent actor can pull off this role. But then came in John Krasinski and showed that how wrong I was. He just became Jim and I didn't feel like I was watching an audition clip, it felt like a real life talk

Jan's audition was Immaculate!🌟 She nailed her role throughout. I think a lot of the characters were the actors' creation. So it is amazing how they all painted their own version.

For the most part. Meredith’s and Stanley’s character roles changed throughout the episodes, as did Kevin’s intonation and level of Idiocracy. But even among those three I wouldn’t want to see anyone else play Kevin.
I thought it was interesting how bad Jim’s audition was in comparison to the others yet they went with him. His pauses were far too long, reminded me of a 101 college acting class.

I'll raise you one more: The Office wouldn't have been what it was if Carell hadn't auditioned the way he did. He's playing Michael from season 2 onwards in that clip, not the one from season 1. It's like the producers rewatched that audition later during production and went "Yeah, let's go with that instead".

The others played him too weak or laid back, Dwight needs to be *Intense* and *Focused* for Dwight to work.
Melora Hardin is so incredible as Jan. You can tell she means business! And then the character arc reveals that she's just as messed up as everyone else. It's perfect.
I know Lena Headey was perfect for Cercei Lannister in GOT, but I feel like Melora Hardin would have been amazing Cercei Lannister as well.

It's so hard to be objective about casting when these characters have become canon and part of our lives. But it really feels like nobody could have come close to playing Dwight like Rainn did. Absolutely nailed that audition.
Dwight K. Schrute is literally one of the Top 10 greatest TV characters of all time and that was 75% Rainn. The writing for him was hilarious but so much of it would've fell flat without his flawless delivery. And he naturally LOOKED the part too.
Seeing the other actors' versions just feels wrong.
Because we are so used to them and if they were played by other people then it would be weird to see them

It’s astounding how Michael and Dwight were basically already there from the very beginning, that’s how good Steve and Rainn fit the roles. I think some of the other actors could’ve done well like Bob Odenkirk, but he would’ve been a very different Michael, and he was born to play Saul Goodman. The Office was perfectly casted.
Bob Odenkirk was having a hard time getting a role and was broke, until he finally became Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad. Now imagine if he became an iconic manager instead of an iconic lawyer. Bob now has an own show of himself.
and Steve Carell as a Saul Goodman? I can see it. I'm sure he would have done a great job in breaking bad. Not so sure in Better call saul though

Was great that they brought Odenkirk in for an episode as "another Michael". For me, he is the closest 2nd choice out of these. Still nowhere near the OG Mike, but was perfect for that episode.

Odenkirk could’ve done a very good Michael tbh. Could completely see it, he’s a natural. Ok satisfied with Steve, would’ve been satisfied with Odenkirk. Yet we probably wouldn’t have had Saul in BB, and wouldn’t have had the spin off. So everything worked out for the best I guess!
