Unlike most screens where you're rolling a check, where it tells you the amount you need and then shows the bonuses you have, the pickpocket screen takes your bonuses into account behind the scenes and just shows you what you need to actually roll. Later in the game when your bonuses stack up it can even show negative numbers.
Oh I thought it didn't accounted for the bonuses, so I thought everything under 7 (I have +7 bonuses) was fair game, but still sometimes people noticed I was pickpocketing. Guessing that's the reason.
Extra tip: You can split stacks of gold in a merchants inventory by holding shift and dragging from the gold pile. Split the main gold pile into stacks of 100 and casually yoink a merchant's entire stock of items and cash, who needs trading when you can steal?
Man i do a save before stealing. And i wait for the dice to hit 20 while stealing 1k more gold. So when it fails i "esc" load the saved data and start over. Now that i saw thi im doin so much more robbin. cuz my way takes a while sometimes

The dialog gets interrupted and you simply just chat with him again and pick pocket again. Rinse and repeat until he has no more loot lmao No loading required so perfect for Honour mode
A tip for others: You can pickpocket Withers, and get ALL the gold you've given him during your whole run. And you can do it any amount of times you want, and he NEVER says a word about it. He just doesn't care, whether you fail or not. Dunno if it's a bug, or if they forgot to give him a reaction, or anything, but it's very, VERY abusable, and you don't even have to use Astarion/Rogue with it. Any time you fail at pickpocketing him, you can just click him again and pickpocket him again. So you've basically got infinite respec, even with just a 100 gold in your pocket.
My guess is: They intentionally made him apathetic about everything. Because if you could accidentally anger him, goodbye resets forever. And that would suck. Better to just allow infinite respecs, instead of risking that shitty situation.

Sin ty for the videos I was about 15 hours or so in and started a new play through just off of how much I wasn’t realizing I could do nor how big this game is 🤯
I've found the Darkness/Fog strat works really well if you coordinate your whole team in the heist in turn based mode. Find Familiar Cat works well enough, but I find myself with a surplus of Arrows of Darkness from robbing vendors anyways so that works better imo. Should let you rob most vendors blind in broad daylight even if there's a ton of NPCs surrounding them. Cast Bless + Enhance Ability on your thief of choice (usually Astarion), and have another party member shoot an Arrow of Darkness or cast a spell obscuring the area surrounding the stuff you need to steal or the shopkeep you want to pickpocket. Have your other teammates walk away from the scene of the crime with their spare movement, and begin your looting spree. Also worth noting you can Quicksave while in the Pickpocket menu, so feel free to savescum as needed. Be warned though, if you load your game then it will count your action as having been already spent pickpocketing, so you'll have to wait a turn. NPCs will usually run out of the fog if they can, but they'll still be close enough to pickpocket while obscured. Repeat until their inventory is cleared out, exit turnbased mode, and teleport to a waypoint with your thief. You'll be in real time, but the fog spells last quite a while, so don't worry if you fumble your map menu. Then do the same with your main party.
you can do this a couple of times right at the start, just dont level up befor you meet him.. use one level up per character to steal everything ( i got gought with the higher rolls ) edit: per each level up, the inventory gets refreshed, and just level up one level at a time
today with the new patch they just changed it so you can't use darkness/fog to steal - I've just tried this next to volo with arrow of darkness and he ran off screaming "assault assault" and if you do use fog next to volo in the grove you start combat with the grove - I found just using a distraction (bard/playing music) and then using a companion to steal worked the best - ugh Raphael decided to fucking appear though, god, worst timing
you can also wear the gloves on the goblin that attack the grove for +1 slight of hand, also you can kill the strange ox in the grove for another +1d4 to skill checks that stacks with guidance
Found out it works only till a certain point. Starting from zones like the Underdark, vendors seems to be much more vigilant and Astarion will have some troubles even with all the buffs and equipment on. Also don't forget you can fail and get spotted if you get a nat 1, and you can't pickpocked the same target two times.
I love playing as thief and just stealing EVERYTHING and buying a bunch of stuff from merchants then just pickpocketing all their gold right back. I'm on my first playthrough as a Wood Elf Ranger/Rogue and rarely ever have to actually pay for anything. When i finally made it to Act3 I was at around 20k gold. It's so easy to get rich as a thief. Also just great for exploring and sneaking around and being able to basically lockpick or disarm anything i come across with guaranteed success. I honestly think most of my hours spent playing has consisted more than half my time sneaking around and stealing shit and inventory management of everything I've stolen.
You don't have to go that way to get smugglers ring, just run back out the grove entrance and run across bridge, immediate right turn to scratch, jump river behind scratch, grab ring. You also didn't throw a rock at the weird cow, run away, come back and buy the Shapeshifter's Boon Ring from the cow.
Metod 1. The other methid is giving the trader items in Barter mode. Get their status to Friendly smile. Then you can cast FEIGN DEATH spell on them (100% success rate), you can steal all you want (10 turns) and no repercusions if you fail. Method 2 : The other method is using Hold person but you have to save scum in case you don't succeed (use Sorcerer, respec to have Metamagic Heightened Spell to increase success of Hold Person).
The problem is that most npc's become bugged when you steal from them and suddenly don't react anymore. You can't even start conversations with them and such.
Thanks for the tip. Not sure how old will I be before I can even finish the game. Spending hours already in just one town alone then there's this exploration of every nook and cranny including jumping to find items on what looks like impassable ledges or even using cats.
