The stage play actually toes the balance pretty well in terms of balancing storytelling and music. While there are moments of suddenly bursting into song, they almost always serve to further the narrative in some way. And there are also large chunks of non-singing.

I agree, but in that some songs undeniably heighten the story … and is therefore pushing the story along. And while there are some songs that could be dropped when it comes to their necessity, the musical’s score is just so feel-good that it would not be ideal to ax them. In fact, I would hope there was an effort to improve them, making them more imperative.
Anyway- I love that this movie is legitimately an adaptation; an attempt to be its own thing by showcasing the musical, reintroducing elements of the book [that the musical left out], incorporating other Oz-related properties, and of course adding something of its own. (I’ve heard there is at least one new character and song.)

I haven’t seen the play, but I’ve read the book. While the story you say you’re not interested in, the friendship/competitiveness story, is a big part of this, this is also a story about political oppression and otherness. I have a feeling Jon Chu may expand on those aspects of the story and that it may surprise you.

fun fact: ariana grande actually started on broadway before being on nickelodeon!! I think she was around 14 year old?
she’s said she was waiting for YEARS to be able to audition for this role.
I think the two of them (ariana and cynthia) are going to make a powerful pairing for this movie!

there is a differentiation between hamilton and west side story... just say your biased!!! and also just say you are not into wicked instead of beating around the bush. also wicked is not wizard of oz. wizard of oz is off of wicked... so lets get the facts right.

I'm like the trailer, plus Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The musical is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and takes place before Dorothy arrives in the Land of Oz. Wicked focuses on the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, and her friendship with Glinda the Good. The musical also provides background information on The Wizard of Oz, such as how the scarecrow loses his brain, the tin man loses his heart, and why the lion has no courage. However, some say that Wicked is an alternative version of the 1939 film, and that you should watch The Wizard of Oz before seeing Wicked because the musical has many twists and plot points that might go over your head. The musical also leaves out many details from the film, such as how Dorothy is rescued by her friends from the Wicked Witch, and any mention of Dorothy or the "little girl".
Also, another thing is that I'm like you: I have no connection on the broadway show based on it, however the movie will be a two-part as well. Overall, I'm going to check it out in theaters though. 💗💚🧹
