I also just landed my first security analyst job, after taking google cybercert with no IT background whatsoever thanks to your videos. Really appreciate your videos which have really helped me a lot. I just want to ask your opinion on a career path to become a cloud security engineer. What affordable cloud certificates should I work on and is it possible to become a cloud security engineer from a security analyst? Thanks again for your help 🤗

I am glad that you pointed this out. I started the cyber sec journey back in 2021 and as I sat back and monitored people from here to Reddit, etc and I started to notice that a ton of people are over saturating a ton of entry level CS jobs, and not doing things you pointed out. Myself personally I take info from most with a grain of salt because I look for context so once I noticed a lot of things you noticed, I slowed down my schooling a little(about 80% done at WGU and I am not dropping out) so I can put a little more focus on projects and to ante up because I do see where things are going, I am doing my projects not only in the cloud but I am now targeting cloud roles. To add to those projects, I am challenging myself to the point that I did my first terraform deployment into AWS last week along with building a web app in AWS to get myself familiar with cloud more. The takeaway I got is that the CS careers do exist, we just scope too rigid as you pointed out. Everyone keep doing your projects, screenshot and document and it will work out in time, do not concern yourself with others on their job hunt if they do not give enough context.

Thanks for approaching this topic, this is probably one of the biggest things that scare people away from cybersecurity. You don't need a degree, you can prove your skill with certifications and projects and knowledge, your progressed is determined by how hard you work instead of how many years you waste in university/braindead jobs, and the only thing people are really scared of is, just like everything in IT- how hard is it to get a job? Since everyone wants experience.
I'll share this with my friend who is just starting his journey, and I have to say that you, professor messer, and networkchuck probably have the best videos on youtube when it comes to cybersecurity, it's great to pair you 3 together since you talk about careers and help people plan while they only really talk about cybersecurity knowledge. Absolutely nailed it on this video. I only got a IT support job cuz i literally never had a job before and wanted to start making money + get foot in the door(I'm 18). I spent a few months there and recently left for a Red Team internship thats remote. The soft skills and just general experience was the reason I was able to feel more confident going into those interviews. Not only that, but depending on where u work, u could get some sick training and the ability to work with great technology. For ex, i worked at an ISP and learned a lot about networking and worked on Juniper equipment.

I'm wondering, from your perspective as a person who worked together with recruiters, are companies open to hiring someone as an international remote worker? (I think you've mentioned in a few of your videos that you've worked together with recruiters)
Since there's not much traction in the cybersecurity field in my country, I've thought of, once I go through the complete roadmap you've laid out on your channel, trying to land a job in other countries in the European Union
I'm interested in what you think about this approach for landing a job

    • @UnixGuy

remote work depends on the company! some allow it some don’t. Your best bet is to continue doing practical projects and doing intermediate certs. For example, follow this roadmap:

You can’t get an entry level job in “cybersecurity” is like saying you can’t get an entry level job in medical. The difference is, HR in the medical field understands the roles of job duties in the medical field and posts those jobs so that candidates understand what they are applying to. If an HR says entry level cybersecurity, they don’t really understand what their business needs. HR could at least focus the role the business needs. Cybersecurity is too broad a term

I admit to making the same mistake as well, I have been applying to solely Cybersecurity analyst roles since i took the IBM Cyber Analyst Course. My friend who took the same course as I did, broadened his horizon and opened his LinkedIn profile to ethical hacking roles. 2 weeks later, he gets a job interview as a pen tester and after doing what he can, he was offered the job and they will provide him training. Disclaimer though, me and my friend both had cybersecurity internships so our profile has a bit of an edge. However, I still believe, it is possible to get your foot in the door. Keep your heads up!
