My friend's husband works in IT and said pretty much the same things. He has a lot of experience in different parts of his career, and just like you, was very upfront about things "in the real world". I started with simple questions, told him about what I enjoy and what I loved about my last job, and I realized that a lot of what I do is critical thinking and problem solving. I learned that I was a pretty meticulous, attentive to detail and inventive. I wasn't so intimidated by this career field anymore, and it actually made me want to step into learning about cyber security. I highly recommend just asking someone who is in the field/related field or simply requesting some time to speak to an employer about this type of position. You also get a feel for how your potential boss would be like, too.

Hey thanks for the video, I liked and subbed.
I just turned 30 few months ago, currently have a Associates Degree in Visual Arts which I know is untrelated, Comptia A+, just got Sec +, and now working on my Network+. The role as a Printer/copier field technician makes up the majority of my work experience (7 years as one). I moved on from that once I had a change in health which limited my ability to travel/drive. I work as a server test technician now which sounds like a lot to do with IT, but really is just running a script which tests to see if equipment will fail under stress. The job gives me lots of down time to study for certs though, recently got my a+ and Sec+. When you turn 30 you definitely feel older and like you have to get your life somewhat together. 😂
Goals start to feel bit further out of reach everyday.
My next step would be to get a degree in Computer Science or Cybersec @ WGU since some of my credits would count towards it and that online university is pretty affordable .
    Any advice?
    thanks!

hey mate, I know the feels of turning 30, although now that’s a distant memory for me!
Well done on getting the certifications, that’s an awesome accomplishment! And I really love the fact that you have experience under your belt, but please don’t downplay it!! You are getting exposure to things and learning so you need to frame it positively and use it to pivot
WGU is an excellent choice, I can’t recommend them enough! pick either cyber or CS, choose the one you love more, if your goal is to work in cyber security then pick cyber security.
Your plan is solid, you just need to be patient and things will happen for you.

Thanks for great content! Just found you channel and I'm really happy I did!
I was wondering what you'd recommend me to do:
I live in Norway, studying IT and Management first year(its a new degree that came out this year). I have always been interested in cybersecurity and I watch free courses in the cyber security field (CCNA and security+ for now). Although I'm not planning to get the certs right away, I want the knowledge they offer, because I hope to get a job in the cyber-sec world, and be ready when for it when the times comes. Do you have advice for somebody like me who likes getting broad knowledge of different things instead of deep dive in 1 or 2 areas? Is this a good habit to begin with? Is finding an internship the "best way" to start a career, and also, how much knowledge is "enough" to start working?

    • @UnixGuy
      @UnixGuy  Рік тому +2

you don’t need a lot of knowledge to start an internship, you can simply start applying. Alternatively, you can pick something like penetration testing and start studying LAB Based certifications, follow the plan in this video: ua-cam.com/video/CePhURvdyqk/v-deo.html

WFH seem to be more company dependent than role dependent to be honest. Some companies are more supportive of that, others not so much.

Hey Nathan! Hope you are doing well. I’m from Toronto and have a finance background in education and work. I have done bachelors and pg diploma and have 5 years of work experience in operations. But I'm not satisfied in terms of learning and growth aspects and have not been able to test my capabilities and true potential in current and previous roles and wish to do something more challenging. Also, I have always had interest into cyber crimes and related fields whenever I heard about it from people around me. So, now seeing the boom, I wish to purse and grow in this field. But I don’t know where to start from and for a guy like me who doesn’t have any tech background has no idea on what to do. I have genuine interest in this field and am ready to put efforts and all the hard work needed. So, can you please guide me on this? Hey mate, who is Nathan? 😂
It’s a great time for you to get in cyber security, and your experience in finance is VERY valuable! As I explained in this video, you may benefit from a masters in cyber security, done part time or online. There are master degrees catered to people who want to change careers so don’t stress about that aspect.
Being a finance guy, your best bet migbt be to land a role in a finance organisation maybe in the area of audit or financial crime/anti money laundry, then pivot from there once you have a mix of degree and certifications. That’s a plan for you, also watch this video about a cyber security specialisation that doesn’t require technical degree/knowlesdge so you might be able to pivot without a degree even:

      this might also help:

Thank you for being a mentor to all of us who want to pursue a career in cyber security with all your knowledge and advice! Your videos are super informative and helpful!
I live in Europe and i have completed my Computer Science undergraduate degree some months ago. I have no certifications though. Right now i am applying to some junior level Cyber Security jobs like Level 1 Security Analyst (I believe this job would be a good start on the field, would you agree?) and so on, but with little success. I have no working experience on the field, other than a 3 month long internship and maybe my thesis (if that is considered as experience) that was on securing a home network with a Firewall (configuration, application, etc.) and testing the environment. So I would like to ask you: Would you advise me to apply to entry level jobs that do not exactly relate to cyber security but are close to it, like a junior network admin or a junior system admin? Or would you advise me to keep applying for any cyber security job that might be uploaded in the next days? Thanks in advance!!

Experience is important because employers believe the incorrect belief that skills only exist if someone else hired you to use them. If you are self-taught or have skills but no experience, they can't see anything.
Internships don't exist after graduation in the USA, so one cannot ask for an internship if they already have their degree.

Hello, I'm really confused and stuck on what my path should be. Many people on reddit and my mentor as well as other people have told me that a Computer Science degree is more versatile and a preferred option than a Cybersecurity degree. My ultimate goal is wanting to work in the Cybersecurity industry but I want to get more information. Right now I'm stuck between whether I should stay in my current school majoring in computer science or transfer to a nearby school that has a major in cybersecurity and start from there. The thing is Computer Science is very hard and the classes im in right now is a weedout class. I don't expect cybersecurity to be easy but perhaps it won't be as hard or complex or rather code intense as CS.
