Hi Joe. When I first started getting into The Beatles, I bought a lot of 6 lps with 3 of them being sealed. I planned on opening them to have clean copies. Before I opened them I stumbled onto a video you made making the argument to leave sealed common albums sealed for collectors. You made the same argument you just made in this video. I listened to you and I am so glad I did. It is really easy to find opened Beatles albums but it is very hard to find them sealed. I have very special Beatles albums in beautiful condition thanks to you. That's just another reason you are one of my favorites. This was a great video.
Melinda Murphy - Great! Yeah, I did speak about this in past videos. Wow, I hope the first one you saw was not my "rant" about some guy in my store who bought a sealed Beatles album... opened it... and then returned it! (That was a nasty video). But it probably was the one you saw!
@@MeanMrMayo I remember you being passionate but not rude. It affected me enough to hold off on opening sealed copies of Early Beatles, Beatles 2 and The Beatles Tell All on Veejay. They are all beautiful records that are easy to find open so I am glad I took your advice.
Hi Joe . Thank you so much for doing a video you sure did have a lot of great and rare examples of shrink vinyl . I did like all of the one with the rare hype stickers on them !!! I do like the shirt a lot so cool !!! Terrific video and you sure did put a lot of work in it thank you for doing it my friend . And I well see you soon :"). Take care .
As I mentioned on Beatle Brad's video, my Dad was a huge record collector. He liked to keep his records in the shrink and we still have quite a collection of his music here....."in shrink".. from big band stuff to 50's and 60's stuff like The Brothers Four.. Limelighters, Peter Paul and Mary..etc, ... most of it in shrink. He taught me a lot about record collecting and caring for records and anti static, cleaning methods. Growing up I always had little cleaning bottles and brushes next to my record player. :) I preferred to always buy 2 copies of my favorite artist or bands. One to open and one to collect unopened. I never had any records warp in the shrink and I think as long as they are stored correctly and cared for, the shrink will not create any warpage. Great vid Joe.
Hey Joe. I will have a video to be made about this topic but I wanted to watch the video so I can get an idea of how to do my video about shrink wrap records. I do enjoy this response and stay tuned for my response sometime this week. Take care Joe
Hi Joe. Over here in the Netherlands we had no shrinkwrap on the albums. You could take the vinyl out of the sleeve in the shop, if you wanted to. I cannot imagine that the record gets some warp if you keep it in the shrink. The cardboard and record itself are too strong to let the shrinkwrap warp the record. Like you said, if you want to see the gatefold cover from the inside, you have to remove the shrink. If you open the shrink, but leave it on, it is logical that shrink crawls back where you opened it. The shrink is put on a record under pressure. So in general there will be no problems. Mostly, if a record is warped, it happened at the factory. Just keep the records standing up and make no pile of records, everything will be okay. And keep them out of the sun. At least, that is my experience.
Great video - I just about always leave the shrink wrap on but I always use protective sleeves also - The only buckling I've come across is in a couple of bootlegs but the record was not warped - Take Care
I generally keep the shrink wrap on my records. Sometimes it's a bit flimsy and doesn't hold up to handling and multiple trips from the shelves so then it will probably get discarded. There are times I will take it off because of the gatefold but more often, I leave it on becuase not that many inside gatefolds are that critical. I remember a company that used to import records from overseas in the 70's and their shrinkwrap was very tight on the album covers, showing obvious bending of the corners but i don't remember any of the LP's I had from that importer that were warped at all. Bob
Very interesting discussion, Joe! When I was collecting vinyl more often (I’ve had to cut it down due to space), the whole “to remove the shrink wrap or not” question came up many times. Someone scolded me once for keeping the shrink wrap on because it would “warp” the record and/or cover. When my dad gave me some of his records from the 1960s, he had left the shrink wrap on some of them and they were all perfectly intact!
One issue to also consider, is if the LP has not been stored in the best of conditions, particularly with the humidity of the storage area, I've found that keeping the shrink wrap on may encourage mold or mildew to grow.
Really think the warp thing only happens when it is a SEALED record for many years. If one side is open, there is no longer pressure on all 4 corners. I do not care about the condition of my jackets at all but I obsess over the condition of the record and I re sleeve every record immediately
hi joe, I have always left the shrink wrap on any new albums I have bought without any incident. even used vinyl that still had the shrink on I would leave as is. its up to the individual to make the decision to leave or discard the shrink. on gatefold covers I would probably discard the shrink to access the gatefold. good video on this subject! rob
The shrink has no effect...its the storage location....is it humid, dry, cool and dark, sitting on wood, or stored sitting on a cement surface? So many variables can affect the album. So I agree with you about the "attic" analogy etc. If stored properly...shrink wrap will not bother your albums. IMHO. Take care Matt
@@matthewstreet1961 ... no, now that you mention it! They say that the tickets are supposed to arrive two weeks before the show, so hopefully today or Monday at the latest.
Loved the video Joe with all the examples from your collection. Agree with everything you said! My opinion is that the dangers of shrink wrap have been way way over hyped! Even in cases where the record is warped it’s hard to actually prove it was the shrink’s fault. I’ve gotten more albums that ended up being warped that I bought without shrink than with! Most warping is from storage issues-such as temp/humidity, and not storing records in upright position but stacking them. Also I’ve opened a few cutout 70s albums still sealed that I got for just a few dollars and wanted to play ... and they were all just fine and not warped or damaged in any way! And most importantly sounded great! Lots of opened/used albums can look mint and play VG at best-snap crackle pop! I also like to collect vintage sealed vinyl as collector pieces of my very favorite albums that I usually have multiple open copies to play already (and likely the CD to boot!). Nothing wrong with that!! I get tired of people saying it is somehow a sin against music and records not to open and play every single record you buy!! Grrr! 🤣
I love the fact you have not opened 'em... Back when Beatles Anthology came out, The entire Beatles catalog was re-released on vinyl. I bought all of them "Again" and have kept them in the shrink wrap... You also showed "Love Songs", I was lucky to pick up a GOLD Vinyl version in New York back in the mid 90's.. it's open and plays beautiful and looks beautiful as GOLD coloured... cheers and thanks for the videos...
Joe, I don't know if you noticed but on the Rutles album the "inner" paper sleeve had a vertical "punch" line in it indicating it was once a reduced sale album. (Normally the punch line goes through the outer cardboard sleeve). I wonder if the store re-sealed it with an outer shrink wrap (which stores are wont to do to make things look "new").
I keep the shrink wrap. I usually carefully slice the opening for the records and don't even bother looking at the gatefolds. On some records which I own multiple copies of (like Sgt. Pepper) I usually have at least one where I can look at it. Can't risk some of my collectors items ever coming out of the shrink wrap at all.
Good response to Beatle BRADS VIDEO. Looks like shrink wrap saying wins out. On gatefold albums it's hard to resist removing the wrap , because I'm curious to see what's inside. You do echo a bit here , but can hear you clearly. I have the Rutles album too & opened it fully to see the inside. Couldn't really make out the warp you were trying to show , but take your word for it. Nice shrink wrap collection there & the older albums do seem a little thicker on the cardboard. Take care Joe.
Some of us including me keep the shrink on, never had a problem..........yet! I too love the hype stickers. I have taken off Shrink to see the gate fold.......on some.
My preference is keeping shrink on. New topic: How did you transport these records? Record case, plastic bag, tote bag, crate, armful... And thanks for showing your shirt too!
Kimba - Good question. Well, I used a rather large plastic bag - and while it had "handles" on it, I was afraid the records would rip through the bag due to the weight. So I held it by the bottom to be sure. Not easy, let me tell you - and a lot of effort driving them forty-five minutes to an hour in the car. The things I do for videos!
You brought so many I figured it may have been challenging! Cloth or canvas totes work ok for about a dozen records. Even those cheap ones from Target or BN are good. If you're gonna travel with more invest in a case! Thanks for sharing! PS I enjoyed the A&E show about John and Yoko.
Hey Joe thanks very enlighting video , its an either or with me , if its pulled tighter than normal ill remove it , it depends normally ill try to keep it on if I can , great video take care have a super riffic day take care Peace
A friend bought me The Rutles' album when it was released but in my case there was no booklet. I didn't realise until it was too late that there was a booklet that should have been included with the album. I remember there was a video that you made some time back in which you removed the shrink from several McCartney albums that you'd had for some time!
Martin Page - Believe it or not, those records got sold eventually when I needed some cash ... and now that times are better I am re-acquiring those Macca LPs, but am keeping the shrink on them again!
Personally, I take the shrink off all my records. I don’t like to buy vintage sealed records with the intent of opening them, but I have done it a few times. Some people say that “you can’t enjoy” records when they have the shrink on, but not me. If you want it to stay on, than keep it that way!
Hey Joe, I was thinking of making a video on this topic, but you covered everything so well that there is really nothing I can add to the conversation. To me, the shrink is simply another layer of protection for your records, so why would you want to remove it? Excellent video!! Take care...
Mr.Mayo how are you today? i found John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Milk and Honey album still sealed at a record store that i will keep it sealed the way it is.
A lot of 2nd hand record stores have a policy of removing all shrink from sealed records so they can file the record away and not leave it out 'live' in the racks. You'd be surprised how they'll do it even though it reduces the value of a valuable record, in a lot of cases!
When I'd ask "you're gonna unseal it?!" they'd say "yeah, there's no other way we can store it." Thankfully some do have cabinets for special items like that though.
Funny yes years ago...all the people like in Stereo said take the wrap off and sooooo i did....i would of had a crazy album collection all mint or excellent condition...oh well there all gone..boo hoo hoo
