Feel like we didn’t listen to the same album. This is probably his best work so far. In any album you will find cliché’s and this one is no exception. But the overal execution of the album is quite amazing. I’ll give your review a 4/10 for the effort.
Except the cliches on this album is extremely obv when compared to a lot of other good albums. I personally rlly like this album too (i've streamed Never Enough for over over 3k mins since it dropped 😭) Definitely FAR from a 6 but i'd still have Freudian over Never Enough imo.
The different vocal treatment on Toronto 2014 was bc Mustafa sang the first verse instead of Daniel Caesar. I think the musical textures actually compliment each other well as the first verse is slower and more somber while the second verse picks up the tempo, more yearning and passionate, to lead into the final chorus. A fave for me!
Daniel said in an interview that Toronto 2014 was supposed to go on mustafa’s most recent album. If you listen to that record, the song actually sounds like it would fit more cohesively into that album than this one
Anyone else listen to the album first, then watch melon man’s review and come away wondering if he and I even listened to the same album like bro what, this shit was beautiful
Melon listens to way more music than you, maybe he detected patterns in Daniel music that he Felt Very clichê that ruinned the experience for him You can see that artists like JPEGMAFIA, that always bring some New tô the tablet, gets more praise
This was kind of a weird album for me. I listened to it 5-6 times and every time I’d come out enjoying a vast majority of the tracks on it but the album as an experience/body of work hasn’t stuck with me nor have any of the songs really. Idk it’s fairly pleasant and easy to listen to but I don’t think there’s a lot of content beyond that to really dive into past those initial listens. All 15 tracks generally cover the same moods and topics with a few standing out because of an instrumental switch up (Toronto 2014), a more focused topic (Shot My Baby), or an especially strong tune or structure (Let Me Go). That’s just how I feel at least… I don’t see myself returning to it down the line but I’m glad other people seem to be really enjoying it
You must not be sad enough bro … because I’m at the lowest in my life and this album speaks to me internally and helps me comfort with day to day stress while also spewing optimistic affirmations into my subconscious mind daily ahah
So happy for the return of Daniel Caesar. Honestly Melon you bring up some good points as usual especially about homiesexuals lyrics but sound-wise so sexy, Do You Like Me? Is an absolute banger as well for sure
This is my least favorite type of Fantano review; the type where he gets this idea of the music being too derivative and latches onto it for the entire review, completely ignoring any artistry or honest emotions put into the work. Same thing with Saba’s Care For Me review which he gave a “meh/10” and just complained the whole time that he sounded too much like Chance the Rapper. Like what?
