  • When she leaves safe harbour,
    Headed for the fishin' ground's unknown waters again;
    And you wave goodbye to the friends on shore,
    Steamin' with a northern wind.
    The waves they roll and the wind's pickin' up,
    And the night is comin' on fast;
    She turns her back to the island shore,
    Through the high waves she will blast.
    And it's
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    The water rolls off of her deck;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack.
    Oh, oh, up she rises,
    She's headed straight into the wind;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    She goes back down, but she rises again.
    In the morning the winds are calm,
    And the waters they glisten with the rising sun;
    The captain says all men on deck,
    There's a day's work to be done.
    We climb the rails, and we hit the deck,
    We've reached the fishing grounds at last.
    We work the day and hear the captain say,
    There's a windstorm coming up fast.
    And it's
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    The water rolls off of her deck;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack.
    Oh, oh, up she rises,
    She's headed straight into the wind;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    She goes back down, but she rises again.
    When the catch is made, we steam for home,
    To a harbour safe and warm;
    Through a restless night we toss and turn,
    In the winds and waves of a storm.
    In the northern gale and a ten foot swell,
    She's a-cuttin' through the mighty sea;
    And the sound of a song is heard from below,
    The men you can hear 'em sing.
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    The water rolls off of her deck;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack.
    Oh, oh, up she rises,
    She's headed straight into the wind;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    She goes back down, but she rises.
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    The water rolls off of her deck;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack.
    Oh, oh, up she rises,
    She's headed straight into the wind;
    Oh, oh, oh, up she rises,
    She goes back down, but she rises again.

    I left Newfoundland in 1969, been back a few times. I'm still a Newfoundlander by heart and blood. My friends are from Gander, Glovertown, Terra Nova Nation Park, St. John's, Fortune and my in-laws on the Burrin Peninsula. Tho I live in North York, Ontario, Newfoundland will always be home to me.

    The fishing grounds were not considered unknown waters, the fishing grounds was a popular place to catch abundance of cod, they called the Grand banks. Which are off shore on the southerly east region of newfoundland. The Grand Banks of Newfoundland are a series of underwater plateaus south-east of the island of Newfoundland on the North American continental shelf. This was consider the true fishing grounds, where massive amounts of cod were once caught off the shores of newfoundland. btw I love this song, as a child in newfoundland we sang this as kids and still do as adults.

    • @bobporterNFLD
      @bobporterNFLD 3 роки тому +2

      When I wrote this song, it was the mid 90's. And I did not write it about the Grand Banks. It was about the longliner fishermen. There was basically no internet for updates any second you wanted. So yes, it was unknown waters.
      I was out there. I know what I wrote about. I saw it, first hand.
