  • Well my father often told me when I was just a lad,
A sailors life was very hard,
    The food was always bad.
But now I've joined the navy am abord a Man o' war,
Now I found a sailor aint a sailor anymore.
    Don't haul on the ropes,
    Don't climb up the mast,
If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore,
A sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore.
Well the killy cover mess says we have it soft, it wasn't like that in his day,
    when we were up aloft.
We like our bunks and sleeping bags, whats a hammok for?
swinging from the deck head or lying on the floor.
    Don't haul on the ropes,
    Don't climb up the mast,
If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore,
A sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore.
Well they gave us an engine that first went up and down,
then with more technology the engine went around.
We now steam and desil but whats it mainly for? A stoker aint a stoker with a shovel anymore.
    Don't haul on the ropes,
    Don't climb up the mast,
If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore,
a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore.
Well they gave us a norestump so we could do it right,
they gave us a radio we signal day and night.
We know our code and cypher so whats the semaphore?
A bump n glass a dozen aint a toss anymore.
    Don't haul on the ropes,
    Don't climb up the mast,
If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore,
a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore.
Two cans of beer a day and thats you're bleeding lot.
But now we have an extra one becuase we stopped the tot.
So, we'll put on our civvie clothes for another run ashore,
a sailors just a sailor, just like he was before.
    Don't haul on the ropes,
    Don't climb up the mast,
If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore,
a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore.
    Don't haul on the ropes,
    Don't climb up the mast,
If you see a sailing ship it might be your last. Get your Civvis aready for another run ashore
a sailor aint a sailor aint a sailor anymore.

didn't understand this song at first, but i started to as it went on - it's saying being a sailor doesn't mean the same thing as it used to because sailors do so much less, and the chorus isn't telling you *not* to do those things, it's telling you *that* you don't do them, and the sailing ship - not that you'll be sunk and never get the chance again, but that they're falling out of use and not around. i know this is an unnecessary and redundant comment, but i just wanted to put my thoughts out there. surprisingly deep for a "drinking" or "shanty" type song, but i like that

Got to disagree with your comment that Royal Navy sailors do less work. They work harder than ever as there so few in a Ship's Company. Each will have several other jobs in addition to their specialised trade.

    • @Pseudowolf
      @Pseudowolf 3 роки тому +8

I agree that it's about how technology has advanced so that sailors don't do the same things as they did in the past. And since the ships are no longer "sailing ships", I think he's saying that a sailor ain't a sailor with the second word meaning literally one who sails. But I don't think he's saying they do less work or aren't as tough as back in those days. He brings it back around at the very end to say that sailors are still sailors even if the specific jobs they do have changed.

Hi all, I accept all your points. My aim was to ensure that people understand than although living conditions have improved dramatically the workload in modern warship has increased too. I think it's just talking about what it means to be a sailor. Like that "back when a coke was a coke" song. Like back in the day you have people slinging ropes and dropping sails. Instead of pushing buttons and pulling levers. The whole crew being topside and having commands echo from the captain to person to person instead of people with headphones. Where morale was kept up by singing shantys and telling old stories to f****** suggestion boxes lol

Problem is the new jobs are so automated they basically run themselves, you're only needed if there's a problem. The plant runs you.
On the old ones, the opposite is true, especially the reciprocating steam plants. You're running the whole show, and it'd literally fly apart without the engineering crew. Always something to do, oiling round to top up lubricators and oil cups, checking bearings to make sure they're running cool, minding the throttle and reversing quadrant as you answer bells from the bridge, and so much more.
Just a different way of operating. Lot of hard work to be sure.

Unfortunaly, and in many ways fortunately, the sailor life is complete different. The work is still the same, but how it is performed is also way different. Not allowed to drink alcohol when working on a ship,no time to get ashore when at port. Still work is hard, long,in bad weather. Of course different from what kind of ship you sail on, I imagine.
The biggest different I would say is earlier being a sailor was an adventure, now it is just an ordinary 8-5 job. Without going home in the evening

About the "norestump" controversy: I've found that Norris of London, a period toolmaker, also may have constructed a patent signal lamp. So it might be a corruption of "Norris lamp" that would have been a regionalism. The standard signal lamp of course is an Aldis or Perkins lamp.

    • @Matelot123
      @Matelot123 5 років тому +2

There's no controversy really. The line in the song says "well they gave us an aldis lamp so we could do it right". There are other mistakes in the reproduced lyrics too which I have cleared up at the top of the comments. :)

    • @nightmaremono7363

I can tell that the sailor will be replaced by a whaler, the sailing ship could be "vicious whale", but i figured White Whale would be better, and the "don't haul on the rope, climb up the mast" kind of needs some work, as well as the part when they mentioned technology, civies could be replaced with "get your harpoons" then "we'll get our harpoons and find a pub ashore".

Basically everything about sailors has changed since the ‘old days’ but we still bloody love getting on it!! 🍻

JayB Vlogs the song was written by a man who served in the Royal Navy. In this particular instance it is being sung by a Newfoundland band, but it isn't a song specific to Newfoundland.

I don't mean to offend but we all have an opinion, and if you don't like this band then don't go on one of their video's and troll them, people will retaliate and then un-needed fights will be fought...

this sea shanty speaks of how sailors have it easy.. and it's sickening. they "don't haul on the ropes or climb on the mast".. rest well dad.. I'm sure Davey Jones locker ain't that fucken bad! aye! another shot of gin!

It was never implied it was easy to be a sailor. Quite the opposite actually. They describe being a sailor now a days like it's usless grunt work. Which implies it wasn't like that long ago.

NO I think you are wrong. Sailors still do all the old things that built their reputations. The hard drinking, big spending. walking-talking sex machines, lover in every port. The only difference now is the gender of the sailors.

Gotta agree. Sounds like they were just trying to get it over with. "Right boys, we've sung all the words, we're through." The drums are nice but Tom sings it with feeling.
