However mordhau devs don’t even cooperate with modders such as providing information of how a patch is going to disable a mod (Star Wars mod for example). Until SDK drops for mordhau, I don’t see a future of me playing it.

I also just will never get into the habit of waiting to block. i register self defence in the first nanoframe of an attack and i am INCREDIBLY instictive and have beaten reaction into my skull in preperation for a real fight. Meaning that when i block for my .5 seconds i take that hit. I am already registering your attack the moment you hit a button and reacting to it, but in this game that kills you. I gotta fight myself to wait 1 second to then block.

I think the actual gameplay loop becomes boring after a while. I really tried to put in the hours and become super competitive and at some point I was at a relatively decent level (Diamond in ranked) but the game was simply not fun and satisfying enough for me in the long run.
It becomes really repetitive... this might have to do with the lack of a decent gamemode but I think the combat itself is also flawed in some way.
On top of that the competitive community in Mordhau is super toxic. I've been playing games competitively for the last 15 years (including Chivalry) but Mordhau was really a new low in terms of childish behavior and overall negativity, especially towards new or less skilled players.
So all these things considered it's no surprise to me that the game is dying.

    • @darkranger116
      @darkranger116 2 роки тому +8

I was in the same boat in terms of the gameplay loop. I cant get over the amount of feinting and the constant "looking off to the side of your opponent" so then your sword hitbox can hit them in a certain way that would normally miss. I'm all for a challenge in video games, but when the meat and potatoes is just football juking each other like you're in a highschool hallway with everyone using two-handed weapons to make the most of their whirling side cuts, it really just.. makes me wonder why i even bother. When I could go play Hellish Quart and actually be able to visually keep track of real-world HEMA maneuvers and techniques. Or just go play bannerlord and be content with its simpler 4 directional combat.

You’re right, they definitely could have made more of an effort with the competitive side of the game. That alone could have kept the player-base going.
Personally I think that the game’s combat was fundamentally frustrating and therefore I never really got into the competitive side of things, despite having leaned towards the competitive side way back in AOC and then Chivalry. I suppose I just expected something better from a new entry to the genre than improved Chivalry combat. I was definitely disappointed when I realised that the combat was pretty similar (drags, feints, and animation distortion being the core competitive gameplay mechanics). I suppose it makes sense knowing the game was created by competitive Chivalry players.
I’m not meaning to offend competitive players here. I’ve seen some people who are godlike at this game and the amount of skill that takes blows my mind. But I still think the combat is fundamentally frustrating and flawed to a lot of people, and this definitely contributed to player loss. When I watch your videos, for example, it’s really impressive how well you can play the game, but the game looks awful when it’s reduced to fish-eyed FOV with the combat mostly being an endless series of feints and drags.
I actually tend to agree with you when you say that the Melee Slasher genre could rival the FPS genre. If you look at cinema as an example, the most popular movies and TV shows that centre around combat are usually melee based. Movies like Star Wars and Dune are set in outer space for fuck sake, but would not be nearly as fun without the melee aspect. It’s seen as more personal and skilful. It’s romanticised about and people like it for that reason.
Conversely, the most popular games these days are shooters, and I don’t think that is some sort of anomaly. I think it’s simply because nobody has gotten melee combat right yet. We need something with the depth of side-scrolling fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat etc. but with the ability to scale it up to multiple opponents in an interactive 3D world. It’s a massive challenge, but I think whoever does it first is going to print money. Nobody has got it yet, that’s for sure. Not Mordhau and definitely not Chivalry 2, which was just uninspiring in every regard.
I really hope you bring us something exciting and different with Contingent.
What Mordhau did get right (and the reason I have continued to play it to this day despite finding the combat lacklustre) is the chaos and hilarity of the medieval setting. The voice lines, the depth of customisation, the weapons and siege equipment, and the interactive parts of maps makes for a really fun experience. People love that, and speaking as somebody who represents the more casual side of Mordhau, Triternion absolutely failed to keep that fire burning too. We needed more content.
Myself and many others have said numerous times that we would have happily paid money for a content expansion pack, or even for micro transactions that increased available content. What we got instead was tiny content patches that were spread far too thin to keep players interested.
I don’t really know what has went on behind the scenes at Triternion, but if I was to speculate, I don’t think they expected the game to do as well as it did. I think they were vastly underprepared to keep it going beyond release. I think they enjoyed the initial success too much, and failed to reinvest the money earned into making more content for the game.
All that's left now is the competitive players who are insanely skilled at a combat system that's too frustrating to attract new players, and memers who don't care about combat anyway. Triternion continues to disappoint both types of player.

What I'm trying to say is, thank you? These dung covered peasants won't do the simplest of things.
How to improve casual by a memer
      1. Add Rainbow siege style matchmaking where all new players will get matched up
      2. Bite the bullet and let people set up private servers for free so they can 1v1 and train and play with friends. The friend system is terrible
      3. Make the game more like COD. Why there isn't search and destroy, proper domination, hardpoint, and capture the flag is beyond my speculation. Frontline is an absolute joke for casual team mode unless you want to meme. It's essentially every man for himself unless someone decides to be a hero.
      4. Literally just add some paid dlc and stop trying to be a "pure indie" studio. People need to make money to keep the game alive and not trying to even market anything is a disaster. I would pay right now for a Rome pack 100% immediately
      5. Release for consoles WITH cross play. Idc what anybody says, if these things were added and had a stable casual base, the skill ceiling wouldn't matter as much if more people were just having fun not worried about winning

I quit Mordhau because it was impossible to have fun. I have about a hundred hours in the game and am quite decent. A few months back (when I played actively) I would consistently get top 3 of my team, but there were always problems.
A problem, for instance, was the amount of high level players increasing dramatically, and the techniques that they used. Drags that blocked out the sun, accels faster than light, stuff like that. I understand that this is normal for a game, high level players will always be a thing and I can live with that. The problem was the fact that nearly no new players rolled in and stayed long enough to get good. I was lucky to put in about 30-40 hours when the game came out, so I had some muscle memory and practice before I took a years long break. When I came back, I got rolled for a bit but I quickly got back on track and was able to keep up. For new players who had to start off with these level 100+ players running around, this must have been horrible.
I tried helping and coaching some people, giving them tips, but none of these people stuck around long. Like you said, only the highest level sweatlords remain, no new players are coming in. The tutorial is a joke, drags are a joke, and overall the game is a joke. I wish Crush wasn't such a fucking pleb, I wish the game could just be revived, but I fear it's too late. I had my fun with it, and a lot of it, but this game is dead for casual players.

I agree. Also, there is great toxicity in Mordhau. When I used to play this game there were people making racist comments, abusing newbies, team-killing while also having the luxury to continue playing without getting banned. For example, I see alot of newbies setting up a ballista crossbow and some other dude would come over and throw a firebomb at them effectively killing them and destroying the crossbow. Another issue I have is people not apologising after team-killing, like it takes 0.5 seconds to type sorry and when one complains about the team kill, the team killer gets defensive. Finally, daggers blocking battle axes, like cmon that is ridiculous
The community is not very welcoming and why bother playing this game because we play to relax or have fun, not to stress out over imbalances or idiotic behaviour.

@@feeblezak Its a video game, mordhau was already the biggest step towards realistic melee combat in its time, and I think that should be praised rather than criticized. Now we barely have any alternatives anyways, chiv 2 is a weirder game to me, hellish quart looks cool but is still in early stages and is much less popular than either game.
Dragging is just vital to the game and the game was balanced around it.. you do realize, attacks need to be hard to read, otherwise its just two people standing there, trading riposte parries until one guy loses to a small stamina disadvantage. You might not notice this as a new player who is having trouble timing basic parries, but once you play long enough, you will realize this problem. There's zero replayability in a defensive duel game. Imagine you're a new player and the level 200 in front of you just stands there and parries you for 10 minutes and there is literally no swing or feint possible that would let you get through his defense. Because that's exactly what will happen if you remove drags.
Well you could buff feints and make feinting unreadable, but that's even more cancer, and I've seen more people complaining about feint spamming than dragging. And I personally wouldn't enjoy that at all, feint guessing simulator is just boring

I played in the oce comp scene up until the middle of this year. I hosted an 8 team 10v10 frontline tournament with my friend because we wanted to introduce some variety in the game modes that where played in comp. We tested some maps and found that the only good maps for comp where camp and taiga so we used those exclusively. The Devs agreed to give the winners crowns and the despite some hiccups the tourney was an overall success and everyone had fun. Then one of the teams sent a message to the Devs saying that we had included a phantom team to boost our numbers and get crowns. The truth was that the players in that team tried to pull out of the tournament after registration had ended. We didn't let them but we agreed to move some players off of that team and on to that groups other team so they could still play if they wanted. The Devs didn't ask us for any explanation or defence and banned us from ever having ingame rewards for our future tournaments. (Which we had already started planning.) That's when I left the game. Why should I bother trying to help improve a game that its own Devs don't seem to care about?

I started playing mordhau around this time last year, I instantly fell in love with the game's mechanics and funnily enough the community. Seeing a naked run around playing a lute and smacking people with it in pubs was the funniest thing to me. Even though I have about 130 hours in the game, i'm ashamed to admit that it feels like it just fell off. I stopped playing pubs to just join 1v1 servers to get better, and unfortunately the game has not been the same. I wanted that push to get better but the amount of stupid shit that the game has at its higher levels just baffles me. Like you said in the video, the good times when playing get absolutely outweighed by the really annoying things in the game. Even when I try to relive those moments I loved in pubs it just doesn't feel the same. That emersion, that feeling when you first started and actually won a fight just got dull, where losing a fight to an insane drag/excel or somebody who spams chamber got infuriating. I don't blame you for quitting, I hope you find something else that allows you to have that fun again.

The game really seems to not being going anywhere and I struggle to find as much enjoyment as I did a year or two ago, a man can only play camp and grad so much until he goes insane wanting just another map that isnt a re-balance of an old map or a 4x4 square duel yard. I wish you luck on Contingent and I'm very excited to see it when it comes.

I think you're correct here Stout, but I also believe that more should be said regarding the inhibition of new players from joining and truly delving into the game. Though no longer possible with the declining playerbase, ranked matchmaking for FL or Invasion would have made the mode more competitive and I daresay fun for both greenhorns and vets alike, with the current lack requiring hundreds of thousands of deaths simply to become reasonable at the game.
Similarly, I think the true deathblow to Mordhau comes from the lack of consideration given to new players. It speaks wonders that the official Mordhau discord server stops anyone under 1000 hours from posting feedback regarding the game. This slaughtered Mordhau's retention of new and middle skill players (0-600H) and diminished the chances of someone picking up the game to give it a proper try.
And of course, I think it must be said that the community has some blame to be felt in this downfall. Dueling servers are toxic cesspools who are more likely to tell you to fuck yourself then offer advice to someone trying to get better. Not to mention of course the still consistent racism that is prevalent in chat.
In short, I will be amazed if Mord makes it to the Eastern Invasion, and I think your decision to pull back from Mordhau is certainly intelligent. Thank you for the fantastic gameplay you've offered this dwindling community, and I cannot wait to see both your new content and your developing game.

You've also briefly talked about it, but talking from experience when I used to be involved in the comp scene in the first ~months after the official release. Many orgs tried to recruit players and find a format that would work for a enjoyable viewing experience (from 15v15s to 3v3s and 1v1s), some Esport managers joined our discords and talked to folks, it looked very very promising.
    ---
Unfortunately tho, many of the servers that we used to skrim at that time got attacked by a bunch of edgy fuckers. This included DDOS, bot spams and joining the server spamming racist shit in the chat and RDM'ing before getting kicked.. This definitely pushed back these managers who were interested in the game. Having proper servers with adequate protection and moderation from Triternion rather than the bootleg weak player-rented one we had it would have gone MARGINALLY BETTER.
Also with articles coming out on the game talking about the lack of moderation for exactly this kind of situation didn't help at all with the image of the game and how these orgs didn't feel comfortable supporting us. (I do not blame the journalists on this either, unfortunately they were right.)
This paired with the very inconsistent support for comp coming from the devs made doomed us.

    Great video stouty!
I particularly like the "AFK devs" chapter since imo the lack of communication from the devs apart from the "insights" from crush and the occasional development snippets (lol hot tub) really give off a lack of interest in their own game. It's as if they don't care.. and the patches seem to reflect that.
Also their update cycle is abysmal at best - their "strategy" they have clearly has not been working out at all players have been asking for minor balancing patches pretty much since I've started playing to no avail - a balance patch every 3 months is better than a "major" patch every 6 months but they don't seem to think that way.

Idk what happened, I kind of just moved on to other games, which I suppose may have been caused by the lack of content Mordhau suffers from. As a person with almost 1k hours on the game, playing mostly invasion, I still really enjoy the game. But this video perfectly explains how I feel about it currently. Despite the game being incredible in terms of combat and net-code. the re-playability is very lacking, especially the more of a one-trick you are. Many other players who also play mostly invasion I've met, the encounter goes like this: they have started playing after me, and quit playing the game after at best a months period. Many players I meet who are insanely good at the game, but only play war axe (for example) eventually get burnt out and stop playing.
I myself, after talking with some of my friends about it, feel the same way, it gets to the point where you're at a high enough skill level where you basically just play on auto pilot, but the competitive stuff is both toxic and infuriating as well as mind numbingly repetitive. This could be part of the fact that, the genre at its core is difficult to make engaging and dynamic (in my opinion) whilst also keeping it skill based and balancing how much new players can enjoy the game, keeping it alive.
It seems impossible to make everything work together, but I think that's the exact issue that Mordhau has; they try to make everyone happy, when it is impossible to do. you can't satisfy the sweats when you do updates to non sweaty game modes, but the core gameplay is balanced around smaller scale, high skill/intensity combat

I personally heard about it from a UA-camr named SovietWomble. And with how they play games (All be it not too seriously) I figured this would be a great game for me and my friends... 3-4 years later boy was I wrong...
I personally love the amount of freedom that the devs allowed in terms of customization. From being a heavy armored greatsword weilding badass to literally the meme of the game naked maulman. But recently I fell out of love with how often I feel myself raging at every death due to not being able to read the animations. And it certainly doesn't help the amount of hard Rs I encounter and trolls who make it impossible to even play the game casually without having to use a bow and get yelled at for it.
Seriously, can't tell you how many times I fall back on a rouge-type character I have that is equipped with a bastard sword and recurve bow just because I was sick of having to read animations. And then they spend the rest of the match hunting me down and making sure I don't get out of spawn.
So yeah... I dropped Mordhau in favor of Chivarly II. which is a lot more fun in my opinion due to the appeal to casual scrubs like me who can swing with little to no thought put into his strikes

Thank you Stouty for trying to build up this game like you have over the years; trying for the good side of the community too, we appreciate it. I never got to ever play Goldrush too but always wished the mode would be adopted into the game... It's so good and I don't understand the developers reaction to that, I honestly feel the Triternion team fail at thinking from the players point of view and thinking about what a player might actually want to experience from the game, instead they stick to their biased own views I think and this doesn't work because they only test the game whilst working on it and don't actually like to play it themselves for some reason (perhaps boredom) but it's hopeless if they have no passion for the community or game that they work on and they need to change that if they truly wish for the community to thrive and not become stale, otherwise it'll be like a artist starting with an idea to create a painting of a pretty flower that everyone likes and then changing his mind and thinking a turd would be better for this painting; no matter what they do with it, it's always just gonna be 'shit' in the end and no one will want anything to do with it... Do have to agree that the lack of forthcoming inclusion when it comes to officially implementing modded stuff into the game is mind boggling. An automatic Win/Win of content.

I think the downfall was patch #20/21
The game’s overall combat was changed more than any patch prior in a way that made the combat feel so much less weighty and this is much more apparent in patch #22/23 where the meta has become “conserve stamina and accel everything.”
The weapon play seems like it was changed without any real goal in mind.
Ironically, a lot of the playerbase has noticed that a majority of these combat changes favor the play style of Crush.
The combat however, isn’t all the playerbase is there for. Quite a few players will also just play the game for the funny interactions, voicelines and emotes. So these players wouldn’t care either way but even then, these are most often the players who grew tired of combat and have already mastered the bizarre swing manipulation of this game.
I hope to see the dung covered peasant conversation lives on!

I bought and played mordhau to have fun in the frontline maps, with team work, chaos and siege engines. I wanted a "imersive" medieval battle ground, and a received for a good amount of hours until my desire to live was taken away from broken animation exploits, 360* attacks, bad level design, bad spawn points ( mostly invasion maps ), and unsatisfying progression. When i express my dissapointment to the comunity most people just say "lol, get gud noob", like i can undestand that some of this problems can be mitigated with more experience, but that is the point, most of these flaws take my joy and energy to try achieve that skill level, also ignoring that just "getting gud" won't fix poorly planned map design.

There are a lot of reasons for the game failing beyond the two main ones you describe are simply from a pure egotistical dumbed down comp mentaility that fails to fully recognise the best game mode and team size that would allow causuals to easily transition in to a more organized comp play. This is because pubs and comp play two completely different versions of the game with no transition. I have always argued and written many articles and posts for 10v10 comp team objective game play being the most satisfying and challenging because it also allows to fully use all game mechanics and player classes including ranged classes as Mordhau has the most balanced range classes of any game of this genera. It also allows for noobs and pubs to fill in those spots in comp to get better and learn with the top players also forcing these top players to actually reachout to the pub community to encourage, recruit , and train new players and get them interested in more competitive modes and play. The comp meta that evolded from the end of Chiv into 5v5 SKM ends up being boring to watch, boring to play, with no real strats for defending or completing an objective. But I feel like I am beating a dead horse and have discussed these topics beyond nausium. Finally, is player expectations on very indy game devs regardless of how much experience they have or how much supposed money has been made. Theses are not AAA studios with large design and programmming teams with fast patch release times. This is on top of the selfish egotistical community that has rarely has built anything let alone a community. If anything, many have gone out of their way to destroy groups, clans and even individual players who have gone out of their way to build, train, and actually grow a community without asking for or expecting money or some form of payment. If anything money has destroyed and corrupted what little comp scene ever existed. But I digress and grow tired of the smell of this dead horse.

I got into chivalry and had the same thing happen, but I found myself enjoying the grind to just get better at that game, and learning, and the same thing happened here I think. I wanted to be good at the game, but there was no real reward, and the comp scene and even ranked was dead. And with all the other games out there that have come out and my own schedule, mordhau dropped from my mind. The devs seem to have no real clue what the players want, horde mode could be fun, but a lot of the map design and limited time and customizability kinda made it not worth the effort. Though I did love the modded horde maps, I still remember the days of sandcastle on chivalry with the fucking jedi and crazy boss fights, and I saw flashes of those feelings in some of the modded maps based of LOTR. Frontline was just a shit show in the worst of ways, where battles could just become tedious or frustrating at certain objectives, and honestly the implementation of horses was pretty bad. Like most things the community was the best part of this game, and the devs didn't listen to them, and constantly stepped on rakes.

Because if I get curbstomped by a better player in melee it just feels a lot more tolerable than in an FPS game where it comes down to "lol I click on head better". Invasion is great and all, but they always feel like death spirals for the defensive team to me. I've only ever won on one map in a defensive invasion and that's almost exploit level, but it seems they changed that so you no longer need to actually kill the nobles so that's gone too.
I guess at this point I could try getting into hoard mode.

This was one of the most mechanically fun games to play with friends. To first learn how to drag and accel then work on foot movement. It was exciting to get better in duels then take that into frontline or invasion. Sad so see it die, had so many good hours in it.

Seeing the way Mordhau went is just sad. I dabbled in competitive Chiv (and was awful at it, but it was fun, your point about 5v5 Obj gamemodes allowing worse players to still derive enjoyment from being carried by superior players absolutely held true) and the dev team's insistence on going all in on 32-64 player servers whose fun hinges on chaos just doesn't hold up. It will always baffle me that the comp Chiv dev team didn't launch the game with small team-based objective modes. Hope the genre picks up
Really says something about a game when the most popular servers, at least in my region, are random weapon FFA, double damage on a white platform, and RP servers.

As someone who must belong to the older segment in this community with more than 3 decades of gaming (and feeling like the Elrond "I was there 3000 years ago" meme just writing it :P) I 'll leave my humble feedback: I've played many games and genres, from old 2D console games to FPS, RTS and many Action on PC, but no other game has given me the sheer enjoyment and bursting all out laughter that Mordhau delivered. Despite all its flaws it was (and still is, although on a lesser degree) an amazing experience with all the lulz in the world, whether wining or losing. Expecially during quarantine and all its misery it was a blessing of a game and I really speak from my heart saying a solid thank you to the devs that made it and that 25 € I spent on April 2019 was a pleasure.
With that being written, I generally agree with all the criticism. It feels like so much potential is getting wasted here: the devs managed to get some things on melee combat right but that was it. Few and inadequate content and not fixing many flaws of the game mechanics (like those broken ass visuals some top tier gamers employ and making it impossible to read movement) are for me among the worst. As stated already, new gamers simply don't have the patience to spend 100+ hours just to get the hang of the game while being slaughtered, and that isn't only because Mordhau is inherently difficult and skill demanding. I trully hope we've not witnessing the end yet, but even then it's great that others get action and start other games (like Contingent) of their own.

508 hours here. As much as I loved Mordhau, it just wasn't worth the pain you had to go through to play it.
The measuring rod I use for MP success is a question - "Is losing still fun?" You're playing an inherently competitive game and you're gonna get your butt kicked. A lot. In my opinion the best multi-player games, getting your butt kicked is still a good time because of the fun you have along the way.
In SWBF2 you have a great time just shooting crazy lazers down hallways with all your clone/Droid buddies before a lighsaber murders you.
In LoL you're using every second to maximize your performance.
In Halo the longer time to kill usually means you're paired up with a teammate and trying to take down targets together, and even losing you get whacky moments with vehicles.
Losing in Mordhau is just... Frustrating. It feels like you're fighting by yourself in a silo at all times, even when you're surrounded by allies. Most of the time allies just get in the way or kill you outright. Too many things are one shot kills, getting one shot by a catapult, ballista, horse, or maul (sorry maul guys) just isn't a good time and yet there are maps that have ALL of those AT THE SAME TIME.
So I mostly stick to duel servers where most users are far above my skill level or far below. And the fun has just dried up. Which sucks! Because that clicky satisfying feeling of landing a good kill is still one of the best in the genre.

I think that your point on cheaters was well done and I think as someone who regularly plays pubs, rp servers and the like (i dont really play the comp scene much at all), cheaters are 100% more common in ranked or dueling servers. I have run into a grand total of 5 cheaters in public matches, but about 10 in ranked or in duel servers. The most egregious instance was a dude who owned a server and his buddy was cheating on it, when I called out his buddy, I was muted for 10 minutes and was banned the moment I could speak again. Did thankfully record the player.
I think your points are all damn solid but I think end of the day I'm still gonna keep playing the game, even if the fact is the game has devolved into medieval vr chat for me (which i dont think is necessarily a bad thing). 99% of my time in mordhau is spent on servers like Duke of York where I have sub 30 ping in case I want to duel someone, but is mostly spent playing music for people on lutemod and standing around talking in 3rd person. Its not a bad experience though, and this shouldnt be seen as me complaining. If it makes me feel good and it has me coming back to play the game then im happy with it.
I think its unfortunate the player count is dwindling but what can ya do? Its a shame the game wasn't cared for properly, especially its comp scene which was regularly slapped in the face by the devs or by one dude who's got a hardon for a felony. I think end of the day as long as the game remains fun ill still play it but thats my opinion and my stance. Shame to see that its lost the appeal for you but I dont think anyone would blame you.
That all being said, I do think you branching out into other content could easily see you having a decent career on youtube and im excited to see where it ends up. Considering you are damn good at the games you decide to play, and are more than capable of editing shit to be entertaining, I think its pretty easy to see that no matter what you decide to do on your channel you're gonna have some success. And while it's sad to know that the mordhau content will dwindle and we may not get another stoutytage, it's also seriously exciting to see where you're gonna go next. Best of luck, stout.

I have 1700 hours, 1600ish of it exclusively in horde mode and most recently modded horde mode. Myself and other horde modders have become inactive because of how long the SDK has been delayed for. Probably won't come back even when it's finally released; the community isn't there to experience it anymore. I probably stand alone as the game's sole PVE advocate and while I understand that asking for PVE content should probably take a backseat to addressing issues that directly threaten the game's life, the potential for this game's single player and cooperative formats is hugely untapped and while the SDK could have addressed that over a year ago, it's far too late now I fear.

I started playing Mordhau from is't release. Biggest problem was that at that time I lived in the far east part of Russia. Japanese and Chinese servers were too far away to give good connection and the main servers of my country were in the central part of it, so I also had a high ping playing on them. The only way to play the game was community servers. We had a couple of good servers. Admins even hosted local tournaments. But when the summer holiydays ended these servers died. I really liked this game, enjoyed playing it with my friends, but unfortunatly due to inabbility to find more servers with good ping I left the game.

    Why did I quit?
Started from Beta, just like Chivalry, never became an amazing god like player because I always played it casually.. Although I would say I can top leaderboards frequently on pub games and hold my own pretty well in most games, I hardly went into duel servers because 1v1's just feel like rock paper scissors. People who started around me already started gaining 100's to 1000's of hours ahead of me. Point break, got tired of dying to certain high level players, wanted to know how to get past their defense and increase my attack, watched some videos, done some duels, went through some clans that always just end up dying but improved over all, learned a lot.. Eventually got better, still, not great, I was still casually having fun, at this point most of these players I knew around when I started were in the level 200's with thousands of hours or they simply stopped playing, they are burnt out on the game by now.. I keep chugging along slowly catching up to their levels until I start playing, less.. and less.. A new game catches my attention for a while. I eventually come back, things are different (kicks no longer punish, CFTP was all weird) was a bad time to return I guess, just didn't have the care to try anymore.. Everything felt dull. Now I only meme around or casually play some pubs but nothing serious that's if I play at all these days..
My most enjoyable parts of the game was: The start when it was all new, and then joining a clan making friends and learning together.. (also sometimes demoralizing and punishing going 40 - 0 to someone way better than you).. I think 5v5 team death match should have been a staple game mode it's really enjoyable, a lot of games use 5 to 6 player teams it seems to be a magic number.

  • @smackyoface466

I first started playing about a year ago, I currently have just shy of 400 hours in game and I made sure to make mental notes of other low level players, very very people stay and why would they? Theres no easy way to find players in the same skill range. I played a lot of duel servers which generally doesn't have low level players in us east, I mostly see level 45+ which already have a understanding of the hidden mechanics and are working on improving using them so any earlier level plays will get rolled by. I dont really play any inv or frontline but in pub deathmatch servers you might find low skill players but you get smashed by a naked maul to the back of the head. So I think (it's to late now) if they had a mode where you could compete with players around your level would of kept the retention up while still having duel servers to play with people to improve. The game is still fun to me, I enjoy the community and the core gameplay. There is still a huge potential for casual gameplay if the devs would actually produce content the players want to see.

  • @Lord_Noemadian

While I still play the game, I can not ignore its failings. Often times, the game seems like its being patches for a smaller and smaller base, and I don't feel like I fit in with this, being very much a casual player. While it could be argued that I suck at the game, and I accept that, I can't help but feel like the game isn't really going anywhere, and any patch that gets released seems to benefit only a small portion of the player base that remains. And because of this, I have noticed that the player base is Shockingly small, as I find the same five trolls in every public lobby, I find the same hackers patrolling the servers, and what remains of the player base seems to be the most toxic of the bunch. I don't know about the rest of the world, but good luck finding a match of 3v3s in America, the lobbies are completely dead. Which I find to be a shame, because I enjoyed having it be more than 1v1, but less chaotic than frontline or Skirmish with some semblance of structure, i.e. no bows.

0:44 After thinking about this for a while, I can agree with you about it POSSIBLY surpassing FPS, if by surpass we mean one game exploding to be more popular than top FPS games, looking at how something like League (which is essentially an RTS mod) can be a thing. It's very unlikely though and I don't see why melee would be more likely to do it than any other less popular game concept, though it is possible.
I still don't believe it's realistically possible if we mean being a more popular genre as a whole (which imo is a more fitting meaning for "surpass"). I think it mainly boils down to how simple of a concept shooting things is in games, both in how easy it is to understand/play and develop - and it shows in how dominant FPS games have been since doom. You mention RPGs like skyrim or witcher but these have very simplified combat without much depth, which is definetly not what we want with pvp melee games. Games like league or minecraft are extremely popular on their own but they are outliers - you don't see nearly as many highly successful copies of them as there are FPS games. The formula of shooting guns is just too solid.
As for becoming a VERY popular game with a healthy community for years (see Rocket League), it's definetly possible for a melee game. Mordhau could have been that if managed properly.
If the things about how comp has been handled are true then damn that's sad.
Tbh the best thing about mordhau right now is how many melee game projects it inspired. Can't wait to see how they work out.

    • @Stouty
      @Stouty  2 роки тому +4

The reason why I think it's going to happen is that melee combat is more skilled than gun fights - guns are after all an equalising force. Shroud can walk into a house in PUBG and get gunned down by some noob camper, whereas that's far less likely to occur to a skilled melee player in Mordhau. As for why The Witcher and Skyrim have little depth I believe that's because nobody knows what melee combat should look like yet, unlike fps which was been figured out for decades. That's something I'm looking to solve
