- From 1979, a bandaged Ric Flair gives a promo on the set of Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling. He seeks revenge against Greg Valentine, who cracked him across the face with Gene Anderson's cane, breaking both the cane AND Flair's nose.

Didn't matter if Ric Flair was a face or heel, he always delivered a great promo
Yes so true. He was great doing both roles
this is when wrestling was CLASSIC these days are long gone!!!!
every interview flair has a title in his hands. This set looks like its from the 70's.
I was at that match in Greensboro where Greg Valentine broke Flair's nose with Gene Anderson's cane. My first wrestling match!
I thought Gene Anderson broke Ric's nose. Ric says whoever did it was a mean bastard. He got 30 some stiches.
@@billc3114 It was Valentine. The Iron Sheik and Jimmy Snuka held Flair while Valentine hit him several times with Gene Anderson's cane. There is a longer video of this on UA-cam, also: ua-cam.com/video/QLhNjAoz5co/v-deo.html
Greg Valentine, in a shoot interview, said that the broken nose and stitches were real (had some teeth issues as well). He felt badly that he got carried away with the cane, but Flair actually liked it, because he knew there was going to be big money in the feud.
I was in Charleston, S.C. when Flair and Valentine fought. Went sixty minutes. No outside interference. just two wrestlers going at it. This was during the summer of '79.
Crazy thing about it was Greg Valentine talked about the cane and it was supposed to break after the first hit. Ric Flair told him to keep going. Valentine was going to stop hitting him after the 3rd hit and it didn’t break. He talks about it if you wan to hear the full story.
This was RASSLIN! So classic!!
I guess Rics classic "Woooooo!" would of hurt like HELL with a broken nose..
damn this guy is awesome. he talks the talk and walks the walk.
The build up was great for back then but we'd see it coming if they did it now: Flair was going to get revenge on Jimmy Snuka and Gene Anderson and Greg volunteered to help. It was the reuniting of the great Flair-Valentine team. Then Valentine turned and broke Flair's nose. Just great promos before and after.
@SmilingSynic True. Valentine said just as he was bringing the cane down, Flair lifted his head and he hit Flair on the nose instead of the forehead. He said he called Flair and apologized and Ric said "Don't worry about. We're going to make a lot of money off this.".
Several promotions used that design of belt for their version of the U.S. Title (There was about two or three U.S. champions around the US at that time.)
no ,you can,t bet the day,s when it was great,THANK YOU TO ALL THE ONE,S THAT GOT OLD OLD SCHOOL,LOVE YOU ALL!
If you close your eyes, he sounds the same back then as he does now.
Even with a broken nose Ric Flair was still the Nature Boy
I would LOVE to add that Old Time US Strap to my collection of vintage Wrestling Belts.
I was at the match in Greensboro NC. Valentine whacked Flair across the bridge of his nose with Gene Anderson's cane. What a classic!
I remember watching this when I was a little kid ....
There is a clip of Valentine talking about it. Said he broke his nose, knocked out teeth
I liked the NWA belt when Jack Brisco and Harley Race had it. It had red leather too.
i know alot of people say wrestleing is not real especially wresteling of today, but i think that in the old days say "77-85, that egos did get involved.. you know traveling with the same people fighting every other nite. i think they did put alittle something extra in the moves and it was somewhat real. like the freebirds with their boots and that guy who took the hammer to the other's ear, ear was just hanging. that was around "85
I remember watching this and I never forgot it. Years later, I got this footage with the entire clip of the match where Flair's nose gets broken. I think it was Iron Shiek / Snuka vs. Flair / Valentine. Valentine turns on Flair and Snuka / Shiek hold Flair while Valentine cracks Anderson's cane over Flair's nose.
Scumazzi I just read more of the posts and it looks like I'm not the only one who remembers this fondly and has it captured on video. The impact of these matches and promos are what made NWA / Mid Atlantic the golden era of wrestling.
I remember this. There was a brutal tag-team match between Flair and Valentine against Jimmy Snuka and the Iron Shiek. Greg Valentine's turn against Nature Boy in this match was probably the best heel turn in the history of wrestling because it was so unexpected and it took everyone by surprise.
Flair definitely got some cosmetic facial work done between the mid-70s and early-80s. Perhaps some of it was connected to injuries from wrestling or the plane crash, but there had to be cosmetic work too. Even between '77 and '79 you can see a difference in the structure of his face. The chin became more prominent for one thing. Rick becoming Rick.
Flair wrestled Snuka on the house show circuit while his nose was still broken, and there was a really cool improvised spot - Snuka ripped that protective mask off of Flair and the fans would throw it back up in the ring. They did that about three times the night I saw them wrestle.
And you guys are right - that was one near-rioting crowd. Not to mention Ric's nose really was broken. Just reading about it in his book made me cringe.
a classic
I guess you need:
Wrestleing ability
Tough guy ego
Acting ability
And be allowed to be yourself
To be a good wrestler, something changed around '93-'96. I dont know what happened but wrestling aint the same.
I guess now if you actually punch somebody they sue(?)
Back in the late 70's and mid eighties if there was real heat, a guy might get punched a lil bit harder in the nose to send a message.
Do you guys think if Greg Valentine never went to the WWF, he would've been a horseman?
yes, maybe so.
I don't know. He and Ole were the same type and I'm not sure they needed two of that ilk and I do mean that in a complimentary way.
That is a great thought. I think Valentine would have been a great addition.
me too, Alice Sutton.
+Jared L. Blassingame Possibly. There were an awful lot of different incarnations of The Four Horsemen and Valentine was certainly more qualified than some of the guys who ended up being Horsemen. My favorite was the original incarnation of The Four Horsemen and my 2nd favorite was the group of Ric, Tully, Arn, and Barry Windham.
I have been to Raleigh Orthopedic quite a few times.
Damn it, man. Valentine got you too.
LOL!!! Yeah, we played in a rugby match once and he ruined my ankle for life.
This was a face turn for Flair (first one I'm pretty sure.) He even teamed with Ricky Steamboat in his pursuit of Valentine. I was about 11or 12. I hated Flair before this, liked him ever since.
Part of the reason that Flair had the face turn was so that he could get the babyface pop after winning the world title. However, shortly after winning the belt they returned him to heel because, for the most part, the NWA champ had to be a heel in order to put over the top face in the territories he visited. In fact, he doesn't get half the credit he deserves for making the Von Erichs.
Can someone post the actual video of Valentine turning on Flair? I remember fans trying to get into the ring to help Flair.
It is!
Why did they cut out the footage of what happend with Ric and Valentine? Was it that graphic? Just curious.
the hammer was his boy
Where is the video
didnt valentine and flair tag again in end of 1982 and attacked piper?
Did rick really get his nose broke in that fight or was that part of the entertainment?
@oldschoolfan420 That was the old united states championship belt. It was on red leather. Not a very pretty belt to look at.
Still being used today!!! It's the NWA National Heavyweight Championship belt. Held by Colt Cabana.
Oh yeah. :)
Uh...Greg Valentine turned on Ric Flair 🤔
Funny how Flair completely ignored David Crockett. Poor guy he seemed like a clown prop through the years, especially with Tully Blanchard.
Is this how Flair got his big nose? Guess not.
This was still the 70s they literally did a full out Buford phaser skit RIC was better 10 years later 10 years after the seabo Buford pusder tv decade he leveled out more in the 80s
Wow, there is absolutely no comparison between the way they booked that and the way WWE booked Cena's reaction to Seth Rollins breaking his nose!
these guys these days on wwe roster half of them dont know shit about wrestling. i see potential in seth rollins when he was heel and he had those 2 stooges he showed me something but most of these guys these days arent showing me shit. wwe needs to bust out the personal feuds. just cos samoa joe beats up seth rollins im suppose to think they really hate each other? prove it to me cut some real promos. hhh and rollins promos were above average but im talking to the whole roster like austin said it seems like alot of them are complacent. just happy to be on tv.fuck that do it for everyone that wanted to be a pro wrestler but never got the chance. do it for the fans. show us some passion cos i feel like wrestlings dead
Ric couldnt smoke in the shower after his beak was broke 😂
Flair is part of what ruined the NWA. By the late 80s, booking him as champion got stale. Arn should've had a run as champion, at least that would be different than Ric Flair reruns.
David Crockett...the absolute worst wresting announcer EVER!
I liked him! He had a great way of adding to the mystique of the wrestlers by saying things like in 6 man tag match "And now Ole is in trouble, as Ronnie Garvin comes in but as the Andersons say they'll take 20 punches just to get the right punch in. Ole and Arn sacrificing themselves as Ric Flair rests up." He knew how to keep the interest of the viewer.
a classic
