This thing began development 2 years before I was born, was supposed to be done by 2001 when I was 1 year old, and it's still getting developed now that i'm 21. Just insane.

In the end it makes sense with the mine part. The Mesoamerican Desert was a major part in the Gold Rush. And it also has the Grand Canyon (which could reference the Mountain aspect) and stretches of highway (as seen in act 1) and rail systems (as seen in act 2/3). It wouldve been cool to see a secret area with a ufo to represent Roswell. I also like the road runner reference in act 1.

If I’m being honest, 2.0 and 2.1’s music for this stage feels incomplete. It feels like it starts at the middle of a song rather than at the beginning. Which makes sense, since it ended up becoming the middle of 2.2’s song for this stage.

Thank you! Fickle got the maps as they were a developer at the time. There are more maps in the ACZ2 Museum however they are all earlier versions of the same map, and I didn't want to pad things out too much. My general philosophy with the retrospective has been to include every major release and only the final version of each prototype iteration... although aside from ACZ2 Museum the most there is are untextured versions of shown prototypes.
I remember the texture contest for Arid Canyon Zone. I even tried to participate in it, only to produce a texture that was too basic-looking (was just a quickly-drawn image in MSPaint).

Bro, if you wanted 2.0 beta content of ACZ1/ACZ2 (including their respective tunes), you could have just asked. There's a lot of historical content missing from this video, including Sonikku's ACZ2 and ACZ3. Roly Poly Putt is also missing, which is notable as part of its Arid Canyon tune made it BACK into SRB2....but this all originated with the ACZ remix tune from 2.0, and went unused! Sorry, I'm a bit of an ACZ archivist. :P

I think arid canyon is the most original zone in the entire sonic history, not only in srb2, the concept maybe is not unique, but in sonic work so well. (Sorry for my english)
@Roberto Grigoraș but in combinatiom whit the highway and well, the canyon, make it a zone very funny to play in my opinion, i dont think that dust hill and mirage saloon have that originality. The only similarity is all of the zone have a desert theme, and the train (exept in dust hill)

The maps were publicly released by the devs at some point.
There's a mod called demo quest in which it has all the levels of the original zone lineup before they got scrapped (it's on the message board btw)
