Agreed. I mean, there are noticeable differences between the earlier versions, with the music going from the original MIDIs to Cyan Helkaraxe's remixes, and the graphics getting better little by little, as well as the level design making marginal improvements...and then v2.2 hits with significant changes all over. It's still recognizable, but between the major graphical improvements, the remixed music by CobaltBW and DrTapeworm, and the further improvements to the level design...2.2 was a BIG update to be sure.

Can we all just take a second to appreciate that SRB2 is old enough that if it were a person, it would now be of drinking age in every country? For 21 years the developers laboured on this game, where every other project fades away due to minor fandom drama. For 21 years they improved, bettered, and added to this little passion project. How much must their lives have changed in those two decades and a bit? How many times must they have thought of leaving this behind as a bygone part of their lives? How much has the franchise and its fandom changed in all this time? How much has the WORLD? It truly is amazing.
Honestly, this is exactly what sets SRB2 apart from most 3D Sonic Fan Games. You get loads and loads of demos with people screaming they are infinitely superior to Sonic Team's games and that SEGA should hire them, yet most of those project never see the light of day and remain as just that, demos. SRB2 developers spent two whole decades developing a game that started as your typical bad Sonic fan game until turning it into a beloved classic. If you ask me, those are truly the fans that deserve to be recognized for their work.

It’s such a nostalgic trip just watching this vid. I remember downloading this game on my dad’s old dell laptop while in church in 2007! I distinctively remember the Sonic character icon in the bottom left. I lost countless hours to this thing and just kept playing because I never owned any game consoles at the time. This, Sonic Final Fantasy, and Ultimate Flash Sonic are my most visceral memories of Sonic as a kid. I know it’s merely just showing the different versions of the game, but thanks for the vid. It’s allowed me to relive some good times.
It's so hard to believe that in the depths of 25 years, this game is the masterpiece of all fangames to this very day, from demo 1 all the way to v2.2.10. Sonic Team Jr. did such an amazing job on making this source of hard work. 👍😁
when version 2019 came up and the greenflower zone 2 theme started playing, i could just imagine cheers and claps going along with the music! the game has really come along why to being THE best sonic game no one has heard of.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I still remember the TGF version of the game, and actually played through most of SRB1 back when I was active in the SFGHQ community. I played a ton out of the 2003 build across many years, but hadn't checked on the game since then until SRB2Kart made a name for themselves. I'm blown away by the improvements made for v2.2. Are you serious?! Sonic Robo Blast 2 has been around since 1998?! Jeez, and I found out about this game in early 2010s (2015 to be precise). You really do learn something new every day.
I played this game once around 2015 and again recently. I was wondering if some stuff changed because I remembered the game differently xD Thanks for the video!
I remember being a toddler during the golden age of newgrounds, I would watch countless of sonic videos on youtube and I never knew SRB2 was a fan game until I recently got back into the series. So crazy how I thought this was an actual Sonic game when I was a kid and how I missed out playing janky sonic flash games when I could have been playing this 😭😭😭
I was there back at the final demo, around 1.09.4, with the addbot command the Invader Zim tag level. Man, nostalgic vibes. It's truly amazing how far this game has improved, and growing with it feels even more amazing!
From going from a memorable flash game to being the most liked Doom engine platformer, this was the best fan game ever to be created in the history of all Sonic fan games.

Great stuff! You should do one for Techno Hill Zone as well, since it's the second oldest zone (since Demo 2 I believe) with a largely preserved layout, for Act 1 at least. I'd love to see the progression to v2.2.
I find it interesting how demo 1 specifically is in 4:3, while every other version(minus 2.2) is in that weird slightly less than 1080p 16:9 resolution that srb2 has as its default resolution for some reason.
I literally just started playing this game maybe a month ago, i just think its amazing the amount of hard work that went into this game, this game is 3 years older than me which is insane. I would give money to the amazing people behind this game.
God, i remember this game! Me and my cousin would play it together when we were 6, i was the controls and he was the camera because of how many issues we had as kids! Nice

This game is part from my heart man!
Im very surprised the music is the same from the very beginning (the instrumentation is different of course but you know what i mean), its cool to know the melody or whatever for the music was always great
It's so interesting how, through all the versions, the overall level design has stayed mostly the same. Yes, definite polish has been made, but there are still areas that are nearly exact throughout all of the (3D, obviously) versions.
I think I started in V.2 back in 2009. It's the year when I'm fully exposed to these fan games outside of Flash Animations. What's that website called back in 2009 where these collection of Sonic Games can be downloaded? That's where I found out about SRB2.
The MIDI versions fit best with the old story (Greenflower City destroyed, Greenflower Zone is meant to be desolate), the new non-MIDI HQ version fits best with the new 2.2 story.
I like how this started as something you'd see in a "really bad sonic fan games" video to being the best classic sonic game I've ever seen.

@Liam Young run the game through steam. add it as a non steam game. it should work then. (controller)
the absolute definition of a great game that never needed great graphics to be a success
Aye m8, i knew i will find you here 🤭😆

So.... Minecraft?
i have so many memories of the final demo and 2.0, i'm amazed to see at how much the game changed in 2.2
yeah... in 2.0 the main developer left due to his marriage giving 2.0 the name SRB2ME, Marriage Edition
when version 2019 came up and the greenflower zone 2 theme started playing, i could just imagine cheers and claps going along with the music! the game has really come along why to being THE best sonic game no one has heard of.
I like how the first 3d version of the game used Saturn sprites for Sonic, and now there's a mod that adds Saturn Sonic (XSonic). My, how far we've come.
That's a pretty long time gap. I'm glad it's in such a good place now. This game as it is is so damn amazing
I remember my dad downloading this back in 2005 and me playing it then. God, good times.
SRB2 had the biggest glow up i've ever seen for a videogame
Srb2 TGF: Hay, Wats op.
st jr.: you're not you when you're hungry. have a snickers.
Srb2 TGF: Crench
st jr.: Better?
SRB2 v2.2.6: Better!
(Edit: The crunch took 21 years. Just saying.)
amazing
8:39 that pitch down sounds creepy
Derpy The Hedgeone Indeed, no idea what happened to the MIDI there.
@@DylanDude Since that instrument uses a lot of pitch-bending in the MIDI, I'm guessing something went wrong with the cues used to do that.
@@MarsJenkar It probably doesn't reset the pitch bend to 0 (perfectly on-key) at the beginning of the MIDI, causing it to stay lower-pitched until the guitar plays the first note with pitch bending.
5:39 - Did Sonic just flip the Flicky?
"flip the Flicky" XD
No, and I didn’t see him use his middlefinger on the flicky
I can’t believe that the game started with this, even though the project was like that, but the developer didn’t give up, this is a good example of how we shouldn’t give up
Yeah
As someone who's played 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2, I never truly appreciated the differences between them until now. The progress is astonishing.
Meeeeeeee
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I still remember the TGF version of the game, and actually played through most of SRB1 back when I was active in the SFGHQ community. I played a ton out of the 2003 build across many years, but hadn't checked on the game since then until SRB2Kart made a name for themselves. I'm blown away by the improvements made for v2.2. I think I may be overdue another playthrough. 😁
It's insane how different 2.2 is compared to 2.1.
@@DylanDude hey Dylan quick question, do you know what the Srb2 Mega archive is?
Beginning: This is so janky lol
Middle: Ooh this looks pretty good
End: I N E E D I T
Are you serious?! Sonic Robo Blast 2 has been around since 1998?! Jeez, and I found out about this game in early 2010s (2015 to be precise). You really do learn something new every day.
I played this game once around 2015 and again recently.
I was wondering if some stuff changed because I remembered the game differently xD
Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome!
Final demo is when I found out about SRB2. Can't believe it's been 17 years..
I remember playing this in one of the early 1.0 versions when I was a teen. To see this project become what it is now is mind blowing to me.
I remember being a toddler during the golden age of newgrounds, I would watch countless of sonic videos on youtube and I never knew SRB2 was a fan game until I recently got back into the series. So crazy how I thought this was an actual Sonic game when I was a kid and how I missed out playing janky sonic flash games when I could have been playing this 😭😭😭
Working on a new video about Techno Hill Zone! EDIT: it's out! ua-cam.com/video/k4ykb0VGrhU/v-deo.html
in 2.2 devs said "hey what if we update literally the entire game"
God bless old games for giving me a sense of nostalgia I can't find anywhere else.
So that's why I remember the game looking and sounding different when I was a little kid!!

I was there back at the final demo, around 1.09.4, with the addbot command the Invader Zim tag level. Man, nostalgic vibes. It's truly amazing how far this game has improved, and growing with it feels even more amazing!
Final demo was apart of my childhood
From going from a memorable flash game to being the most liked Doom engine platformer, this was the best fan game ever to be created in the history of all Sonic fan games.
The transition at 1:17 was actually very well made.
I remember playing through almost all of 1.09.4's life span before eventually losing interest a few months after match beta came out and I remember everyone thought slopes would never be added
I think I'm glad that I waited till 2.2. The slopes make such a huge difference.
I hope we get a VR version.
Why VR?
@@ikagura To have it in stereoscopic 3D, and across at least 110° of your field of vision.
@@MoonlightFox You can technically have a bigger FoV if you mod the game...
@@ikagura oh yes, I have mine set a little wider than the standard, but it's not the same as it is in VR. You'd have to sit really close to a very curved monitor to get a similar effect.
There's a mod that allows you to play in VR
Wow SRB2 Is really amazing, and to know that it's part of so many people childhood (like mine) is just great.
Damn, I got it at 2.1 and I never knew it used to be a 2D platforming Sonic game, I honestly glad you made this as it makes me appreciate the game, even more, seeing how it's changed over the years into the titan it is now.
Got it at 2.0
I remember playing the pre-2.0 version back in middle school. It's amazing to see how far this game has come
16:44 Hoop sound effect from Nights
Nothing beats GFZ1 Xmas.. the atmosphere of the level is just pure calmness
Thank you for playing the actual games rather than srb2 the past, the past is a good way for newcomers to see the old days, but nothing feels better than cracking a can a coke and just sitting down and playing the final demo.
Not counting the 2 instances you had to use the past, but thx for the most part
SRB2 has been in development for 20 years.
Oh my god.
This feels nostalgic even though I only discovered srb2 recently
I love the fact that by 1998 the sonic Xtreme sprites were already available to be used by anyone.

Great stuff! You should do one for Techno Hill Zone as well, since it's the second oldest zone (since Demo 2 I believe) with a largely preserved layout, for Act 1 at least. I'd love to see the progression to v2.2.
Thanks! I've been thinking of doing videos for both THZ and CEZ.

@@DylanDude thanks for answering, you're great :-)
I find it interesting how demo 1 specifically is in 4:3, while every other version(minus 2.2) is in that weird slightly less than 1080p 16:9 resolution that srb2 has as its default resolution for some reason.
This is too cool. It’s the sonic fan base that’s keeping this lil blue guy alive. It makes me happy to see this.☺️☺️☺️
Nice To See The Sonic Xtreme Sprites in The Early Builds :)
the game sure has evolved since its first release!
18:37 i can see that the crawlas was updated like the v2.2 style in v2.0
I literally just started playing this game maybe a month ago, i just think its amazing the amount of hard work that went into this game, this game is 3 years older than me which is insane. I would give money to the amazing people behind this game.
God, i remember this game! Me and my cousin would play it together when we were 6, i was the controls and he was the camera because of how many issues we had as kids! Nice
Im surprised how it went to sonic extreme's sonic to an completely original sonic sprite
This game never left the late 90s/early 2000s look until very very recently. Wow
0:23 I don't know what that noise was, but I'm pretty sure that it just sliced my brain in four pieces.
SRB2 is my favorite childhood game, when the first 2.2 trailer came out I was like: "What??" I was so excited for the release, when it came out, I was super excited about the game and played it! I was finally able to finish the game for the first time though..In this version! Yes, this version. The 2.2 one. I was never able to finish the game since 2.0, now I was finally able to do it! This game is part from my heart man!
Im very surprised the music is the same from the very beginning (the instrumentation is different of course but you know what i mean), its cool to know the melody or whatever for the music was always great
I still am in denial that sonic robo blast 2 is this old
This is giving me Sonic Xtreme vibes and I dig it
The first few 3D versions actually use Sonic's sprites from Xtreme
It's so interesting how, through all the versions, the overall level design has stayed mostly the same. Yes, definite polish has been made, but there are still areas that are nearly exact throughout all of the (3D, obviously) versions.
If it ain't broke don't try fixing it
I love how the level is still recognizable in the earlier versions
the fact that this game is older than me by 1 year
I discovered it 3 weeks ago. I love it!
I think I started in V.2 back in 2009. It's the year when I'm fully exposed to these fan games outside of Flash Animations.
What's that website called back in 2009 where these collection of Sonic Games can be downloaded? That's where I found out about SRB2.
SRB2 has always only intended to be available from its site, but you might be thinking of Sonic Retro.
Huh? 1998?! Whoa.. I didn't Know that game has been created and developed long time ago! This game is sure over 20 years old.
Green flower sounds best in midi. The non midi versions are fine as well just find that the midi version fits in the best.
The MIDI versions fit best with the old story (Greenflower City destroyed, Greenflower Zone is meant to be desolate), the new non-MIDI HQ version fits best with the new 2.2 story.
Midi: Greenflower City is now nothing
Non-Midi: Greenflower Mountain has became Pingas Mountain
The beginning of the music for the level sounds like the solo from Don't Speak by No Doubt.
B circle behind that wall in TGF is the true hero of the series
8:38 What the hell is up with Act 2's Intro?
