Cornbread with collard greens is a must. You haven't truly experienced southern food until you try greens and cornbread.
Y'all should also try other southern cooking/soul food besides just New Orleans style. Alabama, Georgia Tennessee, the Carolinas. Even Florida has locally owned restaurants with great southern cooking.
I say southern because when I was young I heard about soul food and wondered. When I finally went to a friend's reunion, this friend was black, I found out that soul food is what my mom had cooked my whole life but, we just called it southern food.

You absolutely have to try sweet potato pie. Preferably in Georgia. My wife was from Georgia and fixed the best sweet potato pie I've ever eaten.
It's similar to pumpkin pie but so much better. I have had really good sweet potato pie in Florida but, I've never tried it in a restaurant.
Southern or soul food style oxtails are really good. My wife used to fix pigtails and rice that were excellent. I doubt you'd find that in a restaurant though. But you can get oxtails in restaurants. They've recently become a gourmet item so, they've gotten very expensive. They used to be fairly inexpensive. Even Gordon Ramsay has cooked them.

@phobiaone - What people that like to lay claim to New Orleans food will stop doing is giving credit to Cajun/ Creole people, when saying Creole food is another way of crediting French/ Cajuns with food that is not theirs and the continuing erasing of the enslaved Africans. New Orleans food is the food of the African enslaved people or considered Soul Food today but, you will not find any of these dishes being served in the Native American or french cultures. As for as Caribbean cultures, central and South American and even in South Carolina where the Gullah Ghee people live, they serve the same foods by similar names that is the culture of the enslaved people including BBQ. The only reason why people can lay claims to African Americans food is because, we never had or was given any money to make money off of our intellectual property or culture and our culture becomes American culture and currency for anyone that wants to claim it. We are America’s ORIGINAL TOP CHEF’s!

I grew up around New Orleans! It's fascinating to see people experiencing the food I grew up with for the first time! One thing to note : next time I recommend dipping the cornbread in the red beans and rice, or even crumbling it up and mixing it together (like one would crumble crackers into soup). It makes them less soupy, and the cornbread absorbs the juices without getting too soggy, adding a nice thick texture to the dish. As for where we get all those flavors for the gumbo, New Orleans is one of the oldest "melting pots" in the U.S. It's a mix of many cultures, especially when it comes to the food and spices. Great video! I'm hungry now.

May not love New Orleans so much in the summer time as it gets really hot and humid. Red Beans and Rice plus Gumbo are considered to be Creole/Soul food. Usually considered to be a mix of French, African, Caribbean and Native American cultures. Next stop Austin Texas and Terry Blacks for BBQ. Oh, Cornbread really good but kind of on the dry side so dipping it in the Red Beans and Rice sauce was a good idea. More commonly you put butter and honey on it.

@golfr-kg9ss New Orleans food is the food of the African enslaved people or considered Soul Food today but, you will not find any of these dishes being served in the Native American or french cultures. I'm from Mississippi about 3 hours north of New Orleans. I'm 60 now, but when I was young, my Mom would cook ham, black-eyed peas, butter beans and cornbread for supper. Sometimes we would have turnip greens and home made pepper sauce too for supper with the rest of it. We lived in Jackson, MS but half of our yard was a Garden that we worked in all the time. Then in the morning, Mom would warm up the left over cornbread in the oven, she would split it open and smother it in butter. Then we would pour some strong backstrap molasses over it for Breakfast with milk to wash it down. It was the BEST. I still love that sometimes for desert instead of breakfast. Another way to enjoy cornbread is to make it a little sweet like my Mom's, butter it, then pour black-eyed peas and juice over it.

Oh, I just loved this video and I'm so happy you are in the south eating southern food! I'm so happy that Andrew tried the hot sauce on the fried chicken! I can't eat fried chicken without hot sauce! I also put hot sauce on almost everything, including red beans and rice, and gumbo. As far as the cornbread, most people just eat it with softened butter or plain. I'm obsessed with you two and I hope your channel continues to grow!

It's so good! the fried chicken was delicious. We didn't think of asking for butter but i guess that would be delicious on cornbread! next time for sure... Thanks for watching and your very kind words..

And that was the day you two found out, there is no bad food in New Orleans. I was last there for a week, back in 2000, and I didn't have a bad meal in that whole time. Just food bliss. I'm glad you two enjoyed it!

I like how genuine they are, I like they're chemistry, and I think she has a great personality and I would want to see more from her. She could host something small. Her voice is nice. If she was hosting a nature documentary or something, her voice would be a really great note in something like that.

I love seeing more and more people venturing out from the tourist traps of the US and getting down to the south to experience (what I consider) some of the best eating you’ll find in all of the US.

Crystal hot sauce has been my favorite hot sauce since I was a little boy, and red beans and rice has always been my favorite meal. Obviously, I'm from New Orleans so every Monday the house special in most restaurants in NOLA is red beans and rice. It's been that way for a hundred years I'd bet. My wife doesn't put her red beans on rice she puts it on top of a corn bread muffin in a bowl, try that out too you won't be disappointed. Also, next time you folks are in NOLA eating out try to add a little bit of Crystal hot sauce to your red beans and rice, it's very tasty. Cheers!

Great video. Watching you both light up and enjoying the "spices" makes me chuckle a bit.
In my head I was saying get some hot sauce when you first tried the chicken, and was elated that you did. A vinegar heavy hot sauce like the one you had is fantastic for greasy foods. Kind of in the UK adding malt vinegar to fish and chips. I also ad that kind of hot sauce to fried fish. The Crystal brand as well as Louisiana and Texas Pete are great. For wings the Frank's Red Hot is usually used. But I think all the above mention are good. For Mexican dishes I like Cholula and Tapatio.
Even the red beans and rice seem to be flavor bombs. Which makes me wonder what the English beans taste like, and if you are able to go back to eating them after having eaten beans in the US. Not sure if you had Mexican refried or pinto beans. And in the south we also have navy beans (or white beans). BBQ baked beans tend to be sweet.
Looking forward to your next adventure.

Next time you’re in the New Orleans area, travel about two hours east and hit the Lafayette area. Cajun food has lots of similarities to Creole food, but it’s amazing the difference the short drive will do. Our gumbo is different, as we use roux instead of file and we normally don’t mix seafood with land meat. Lots of little hidden gems in the Lafayette area, but you also can’t go wrong with the more touristy places like Prejeans.

Red beans and rice is a dish traditionally enjoyed on Mondays. This is because Monday used to be laundry day way back when. A household would heat up a large amount of water to do all the laundry. They would take some of that hot water and cook the red beans and rice all day.
