I actually bought 2 of the scarab 2 gen3… I got a black one with the d/e-s blade and a clear natural with single edge. Tried to do a blade swap, they aren’t compatible, but I’ve got 2 scarabs now so I’m ok with it… it fires so hard, and retracts even harder. The noise when it retracts will sometimes trigger my Apple Watch db warning…..
M390mk is supposed to be slightly more edge retention and hardness for better polish. A lower HRC would make it slightly tougher, but definitely wouldn’t help edge retention or polish.
100% it's just extra steps to being hetero like two trans having a baby. Stupid games going off shorthand for marketing purposes. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
@rubynodom9896 cause it's barely different from regular m390. M390 or m390mk should be at 60-62 hrc not microtechs usual 58-60 which is horrible for m390. M390 is made for edge retention and corrosion resistance not toughness if you want a tough steel with good edge retention go with m4, cru wear, 3v, 4v, magnacut not m390. To get the best out of m390 it need to be above 60hrc
I have anecdotally heard from a commenter on CBRx more recent video that they may have secretely reacted to the soft testing blades and anything that has been tested that was manufactured 8/2024 ish and later has been testing 3-4 hrc better than it was.
@WyattWillis88 that's good but they shouldn't have been that soft to begin with if your gonna charge $300+ for a knife you expect the steel to be heat treated properly. Microtech has had poor hrc on their knives for yrs it's gonna take more than a couple months of actually correctly heat treating there knives before people actually believe they've fixed it and aren't gonna revert back once people stop testing their knives
I'm not really an otf guy. Had a few and always thought Microtech was top of the line! Where I live doesn't have any good stores that sell knives. My first Microtech Green Mamba! Unfortunately I feel like I wasted my money on it! But the ADV Tactical otf I love!!!!
1 or 2 test doesn't indicate they increased the hrc, to small of a sample size. All these otf knives should be in m4 or 4v for the properties needed in a otf. Even if they used 3v at 60-61rc it would be better than m390 for it actual uses. I wouldn't want to break cardboard down with a otf so they are basically a fidget toy that can stab shit.
I have the Scarab 2 DE/S Tactical Gen 3. It was $700 on AKC and I emailed them with an offer of $615 and the seller accepted, so I got lucky. I haven't saw a single tactical des for sale ever sense and I bought it Oct 14th I think. I wanted to make sure I got it because ya never know when theyll decide to not do a run for a year or 2. I mean, they came out with a gen 3 before I could even get the gen 2 so that proves my point lol.
I too would love to see Microtech use various steels. In terms of models, Microtech gives off Spyderco vibes in the sense they have have several flagship models and seeing them make them in different materials would be cool.
I have the same shadow variant. Took me forever to find but my years of patience paid off. I’ll be getting the new one but it’s definitely not my too priority. Need the smock and to finish my Sage 5 collection
I have a Scarab II new gen just like yours and mine has more blade play than the prior gen Scarab II. I still love it and use it all the time as it’s in daily carry rotation. I’ve had mine about a year or so and it’s been great however I have had to sharpen it once after an extended cardboard slicing session. 8/10 for me… $400ish knife all day so lightly overpriced but still acceptable for what it is.
Question! Could that thumb switch be 1/2 the size, just saying😢 Not that I can get one in my country (wishful thinking Canada) Thanks for all the content 🎉
This is still their best model IMO, I have the Proof Run and I love it. I thought I was done with Microtech for a while but they just suckered me in for the new Ultratech and I like the ZBT a LOT and now I'm really hoping they make a Scarab with it too.
Based on my experience with my MSI I have no complaints of their M390MK. Maybe I got lucky with one with a higher HRC, but it held a good working edge for a really long time and I had no issues with chipping or anything like that. Seemed to perform somewhat like a good S45vn IMO.
"In my day, knives cut butter, now butter cuts knives." 😂 They make some really cool knives. If people cared as much about HRC as we do, people wouldn't be buying them out all the time. 💀
MC - Check out CBRx’s video on the new ZBT Ultratech! He shows it’s at least 2 points higher than five other models using M390mk. Putting it at 61 HRC.
Thanks for another great upload. I can appreciate those changes in the gen 3 more than their cheesy language used to describe it in Microtechs marketing campaign. Similar to cell phones, their improvements are not significant enough to merit an upgrade from gen 2s unless one has weak hands. $500 maybe a lot especially with questionable HRC but look on the bright side. You scored an example with a fluted spine. Imagine how folks feel who received theirs without. Microtech cost cutting at its finest.
The switch flutes suck i never had a problem with stuff collecting in the switch now i do after a few carries with lint and the action is better but still behind all other brands pretty much
The HRC argument is utterly stupid for 99.99% of people who aren’t using their knives all day long. 58 - 60 M390 is fine for the overwhelmingly vast majority of users just like my Inkosi S35VN at 58 - it’s fine.
Na. Sorry. 99.9% of people don't need 700 horsepower, but if I buy a a Hellcat, I expect to get that horsepower, regardless of the fact that I'm not a race car driver and won't be able to take full advantage of that. I've heard your argument before and it's nonsense. Sorry
you know what im thinking? thinking you should have your own rockwell testing machine. no, not for our amusement. but, because you would absolutely scare the living shit out any knife company running it soft. just word getting around that thee metal complex has his own rockwell machine, get out!! i bet at least one company would start doing it right. and that my friend would be a plus for the entire community. just another thought. thanks, take care.
I live vicariously through your knives. Lol. I live on Griptillian $$ and watch all the other knives I love on this channel. Lol. One day I'll get there. I'm thinking the Microtech MSI will be my first close to $200 knife.
I enjoy your reviews and comments. But I'm old, retired and on a limited budget . I don't think I'd ever pay that much for a knife, and if I did it would be a visually awesome knife that would go in a shadowbox on the wall. I can't imagine ever carrying it.
@@Oso_GordoYou can save a significant amount off table price when purchasing “pre owned”. Well worth looking into as they’re usually unused by their first owners. Plus they carry the same lifetime warranty.

If microtechs excuse for poor hrc on m390 is toughness then they shouldve chose a different steel that is actually meant to be tough
100% it's just extra steps to being hetero like two trans having a baby. Stupid games going off shorthand for marketing purposes. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
How the hell do people pretend to know what the hrc should be on their proprietary m390?!?

I'm sitting back and waiting until Microtech makes a ZBT version of the Dirac Delta.
I’d love that. I wish they made more knives with the button in the center.
Thanks
The newest heat treats have been much better. 61+ from the newest hrc numbers I have seen. Funny, my maxace has much less blade play. 😂

Howdy n thanks!I bought the new Combat Troodon and really like that model!

What makes it feel bigger than the CT? Width? I'll have to handle them next time I'm at DLT because the specs say both blades are 4"

I picked up one of these last month and it is badass! Merry Christmas!

Have a gen 2 shad de serrated back and now the fluted stone wash drop
Could the Heretic Colossus be an alternative to a scarab gen 3 ?????

If you got that shadow Scarab from E Knives, I had it in my hands at one time and almost bought it.
Please, give us some news about the Crucable steel factory ..! ^^
I did. It was in my TKG episode

I want😢
AH!
Ah , I wish my sissy state would let me buy and carry an OTF.
Microtech sucks on m390 mk I got one and it sucks pay a premium price for a bad product
That's crazy microtech has to resort to making lightning otf clones, it's just sad.
Those are ugly AF
