I own a couple ZT knives and it’s surprising that it came so dull. They are fantastic knives. This was a great test! It’s cool to see someone that doesn’t focus on knife content do such a great job testing so many knives in such a condensed video. Excellent job!
ZTs have famously thick blades so unless the secondary bevel is very steep they're hard to get to the same sharpness as a very thin blade like the Civivi.
I 've had a ZT for 3 years it came from the factory razor sharp. After field dressing a lot of deer and squirrels I had to send it back to get it resharpened and have the bearings replaced. They did OK but it's hard to get as sharp as they do. It does stay sharp through a lot of hides. Thanks for all the work you put in these tests.
Very nicely done! Edge Retention tests the Civivi and ICON D2 steel blades do so well. It really is an underrated steel that with good heat treatment can really perform. Just keep it clean and check for rust. You can definitely find cheaper Magnacut and M390 knives, but this is a great comparison in general. Would love if you included the steel type in your chart!
Was this a made in America knife or the Chinese crap tested in this video? I visited the Buck Knife factory in Post Falls, Idaho a few years ago, they pushed the that their knives were made in America. A knife store up the street had a bunch of Buck branded crap for $5 to $20. I still have America made Shrade and Imperial knives from when I was in the Scouts and I"m 68 years old.
I’m a lefty, and I absolutely despise liner lock designs. One of the best for lefties is the cross pin lock. As a knife fan, I appreciate the frequent updates to your knife reviews! Thank you sir
Really? I'm a lefty and a knife collector. Most of the knives I own are frame lock and liner lock knives and I've never had a single problem with either and I can do everything that a right-handed person can do with them with ease. Just have to manipulate it slightly differently in hand. Not a big deal.
@@joet81 yeah my experience as someone who is extremely right handed left hand is borderline useless I usually can manipulate liners with my left but I can see why a lefty wouldn't like them
Its nice that each knifes steel is listed. This has a huge influence in its edge holding, toughness and ease of sharpening. Some of these are very expensive premium high end steels.
The steel matters but if the steel isn't heat treated properly or handled correctly during manufacturing you're not going to have the performance you should from the steel. That care and expertise does tend to cost to do too.
Oh hey, I have that Civivi, it's done me well for basic tasks in my day to day. Been considering getting a higher end one with one of these exotic blends of herbs and spices, but its nice to have my belief that I made a decent purchase reinforced.
I would recommend going for it. I purchased a $200 customized civivi and it's the best knife I've ever owned. Which says a lot considering I have around 150 pocket knives.
@@Sargent43 I had one of their damascus blades, fell through a hole in my pocket at Lowe's...I loved that knife though. It was already discontinued, so I found one NIB and grabbed it, but now I'm scared to EDC the thing b/c I'll lose it. I use cheaper civivi's now, but that damascus blade was nice. I haven't tried the Nitro-V. I may give that a go next.
I'm not even done with the video and I already know the Civivi crushed it. They make great budget knives. The Elementum II (button lock) is probably the king of the sub $50 knives.
As a (small) knife collector. I was kinda surprised that the Kizer came with such a dull blade from the factory. Cause none of mine have been that bad. Not surprised with the Civivi though. They make some of the absolute best knives, when you factor in the price. Imo. Nothing beats their Elementum II
I bought a Benchmade 940 earlier this year after doing plenty of research including from this channel. It was pricey, but I use it every day and think it was well worth the price. Expensive products aren't for everyone, but there's something to be said about quality craftsmanship.
Always impressive as usual with your extensive testing and putting it into a 20-minute video! What blows me away as much as anything is your sharpener, which I know you evaluated once upon a time and was the best. Super impressive! Or, VERY IMPRESSIVE in PF Lingo!
Dang! The commitment to 3,800 back and forth passes plus completely reshaping the edge on all the blades is just unreal! It's extremely impressive that some of the knives came out of the drop test completely unphased. It's great to see the long time brands like Kershaw, Kiezer, and SOG performing well on blade durability, but Civivi has some really gorgeous blades. Hopefully the competition causes them to step up their fit and finish!
This is the best channel on the UA-cam. I'm never needing another pocket knife as I'm very happy with my Gerber EZ out. And I have two extra new in box. But I watched this intently and paused and rewatched a large portion of this. Love your work.
I bought the Smith & Wesson on Amazon for $12 back in 2022 as the best seller. It’s still works well for me during travel and it’s used to cut Costco rotisserie chicken

Thanks for sharing sir! Your reviews are always awesome. We common every day people appreciate your efforts. I always look forward to your next reviews, and look in your archives if I am looking for reviews on something I am looking to buy. YOU RULE!
I remember getting a buck knife before I was 10 years old from my dad. That was the early early 70s and guess what I even carried it to school and never got in trouble for because I knew it stayed in my pocket. I currently have a Kershaw that was given to me in 2011 after retiring from the military. I still use it daily. I think it’s a pretty good knife. It keeps an edge so I stay with it I don’t know if it’s different than the other Kershaw‘s but it has the Snap On logo on the handle.🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼
Thanks, I will definitely try one. Do you have a specific recommendation? I have carried the cheapest or whatever has been on sale. The Icon was my first "expensive" knife (goes on sale for $30 all the time) and it has been great. I am by far not a knife expert, or even an enthusiast.
@sk0.0t3r don't get fooled by the obsessed UA-cam "collectors". There is no need to spend a lot. Look at the purpose of the knife and look at the grind. Certain grinds are better for certain uses and some are much harder to sharpen. The Internet can help with this as can Grok or Chatgpt. The type of steel say SV35 or D2 will have various properties like corrosion resistance or edge retention but like in the case of D2, harder to sharpen. Pick a knife you like the look of, the steel to suit your use case and in the grind that fits its use. Once again use Grok or Chatgpt and the Internet for clarification. Do not spend hundreds it's pointless, titanium this and that, waste of money. A good blade that will last need not cost more than $50
Project Farm, it's thanks to your tests that I know which products I should choose. Sometimes I end up with more than one product from the same test as one preforms better at task "A" than task "B" and vice versa so I get one of each to cover my needs. So a huge thank you!
Perfect timing! I've lost my Kershaws, my favorite EDC! I use the exact Crescent, very similar CRKT and SOG as well, rotated in as they need to be sharpened or if I want to change things up some days. The Civivi has been on my radar as well as the ICON. Kershaws have been so good and reliable i'll be replacing it with the same one, but you've def ensured me I won't be wasting money with the next new addition with either choice i'm looking at. Thank you!
I purchased my last Kershaw from DHgate online. I'm not sure if it's the real deal avoiding the middleman (Kershaw) or if it's a fake but for $18 I can't tell the difference 😂 It would be neat to see a comparison of some of these vs the real deal. I suspect people are paying quite a bit extra just for the brand name. Basically test what may be fakes vs store bought.
Only two days left before Christmas, time to get shopping. Thank you Todd for providing the best options to buy for tools for family and friends. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.

Happy Holidays everyone 🎉 I have several Civivi knives most, are inexpensive including the mini Praxxis seen here. I an totally happy with the quality to price point
I have the Icon and Civivi knives, and my experience using them matches the test outcomes. Both are excellent, especially at their price points. Very timely video! Knives have gotten so good that I have started collecting them.
Civivi, Kizer, Vosteed, and so many others have really pushed the boundaries of quality for knives under $75-$100. If anyone reading this wants to rabbit hole on knife steel testing, I highly recommend the Cedric and Ada Outdoors channel. Great “bro science “ cut testing on lots of steels
Great recommendation ! Cedic & Ada is 100% objective & entertaining as well. I'm a 'knife guy' & he puts a lot of effort into his edge retention testing. Also, no shilling, as many other knife channels do.
@@Sfhakrn This is a silly comment. It always depends on the type of knife, the materials, the blade, and what you are trying to break it for. A cheap folding knife isn't a pry bar. An aluminum handle Civivi isn't bending by human hands. Nor are ones with steel liners and G10 scales. Use tools for how they're designed.
Always love the videos! I think you should test permanent markers like sharpie vs Milwaukee Inkzall and others and test how long it takes them to dry out, whether they can write on dirty surfaces or oily surfaces, and how durable the writing is when exposed to weather or soap or other degreasers. Happy holidays!
This is one you could do over and over again with the amount of EDC options out there. Loved the video as always! I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!!
I really appreciate your videos, they’re a heavy influence on what tools I buy. I’ve been shopping for an air compressor recently, and I’d really love to see an air compressor video. Thanks for all you do!
All the big knife channel guys are glued to this video. Nice Todd! No Spyderco? Love my Civivi scored high. My only quibbles are opening force & side/side tests between a knife with bearings v no bearings or tensioning v no tensioning on the pivot is apples/oranges. Sloppy tolerances may win the test, but broken in actions (knives/guns) are a better test. On my way to Amazon to buy a good one, Merry Christmas, you rock, one of my top 5 channels. :) Froggy. Bought SOG. The couple of places ICON beat are EZ fix. Look at the blade sharpness retention! Will rotate carry with my Civivi, Spyderco, and (GASP) WalMart Ozark Trail (should be in test also)
Thanks, great stuff. I'm a 'knife guy' so would only have tested about 5 of the ones you selected here. But I think your selection was good for the average person that might be in the market to buy a knife. Really appreciate your scientific methods of testing these. Keep up the excellent work ! Wishing you & your family a very Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 !
Pocket knives are always a great stocking stuffer, now we know a quality knife won't break the bank. Thanx for all the work you put in for us and Merry Christmas Friend.
@@jayedwards4787I have one, it’s not that great haha. it’s a good $10 knife, but it doesn’t compete with something like the icon at a $30 pp or ZT in the almost $400 pp.
While I have no use for knives like these (I use utility knives though) I'm still more than happy to watch your videos as they're really well put together! You've also influenced my choice of past tool purchases and I'm very thankful for all you do! Merry Christmas from the UK! 🎄 🎅
I find uses for pocket knives sometimes. Like if I'm out doing yard work and I have to open bags of stuff up. I have retractable utility knives too but for me a pocket knife is just more appropriate a tool to use. If I had to I could get by with just utility knives. I have a whole drawer of different knives though.
3:54 That CRKT Pazoda certainly is a frame lock, not a liner lock. Maybe the Amazon listing misled you, because it's wrong. CRKT's own site lists Pazoda and its compact variant explicitly as frame lock.
My new blades are Ganzo Firebirds for only $27 in D2... GREAT action and really takes an edge! Civivi also makes some great blades for around the same price. Thanks!
Holy crap. I can't trust any of his reviews anymore! How sad :( how the mighty have fallen. Didn't include the Internet famous wally world knives either. It's like he only included what he could get on Amazon with minimum effort and trusted the write ups they had rather than LOOKING at the actual knife.
I had no idea rescue knives were even a thing. Grabbed that Kershaw in case I need to pull somebody from a car wreck. You showed it was a good everyday knife, so I have no problem carrying it around all the time.
I love Civivi knives. I currently own 35 of them. great quality for the price. glad you tried out the mini praxis. The Elementum is quite popular but not as ergonomic as the mini praxis IMHO. I pocket carried that mini praxis in the same configuration just yesterday. I love their models with wood scales.
Well, Commander, you sure had a whizzer test and a BIG batch to choose from! A-PLUS! The ONLY kife I ever carried and toted daily for years was a Vitorinox Swiss Army knife. It lasted till the emblem and handles fell off and then I just put it in my lunch/dinner bag and I believe it's still right there. Maybe sharpened the blade 2ice but the screwdrivers and sissors did all the work and the sissors trimmed several tons of finger nails! Hope yall have a WONDERFUL Christmas with LOTS of Jesus Blessings!
Just a quick tip on knife carrying that my cousin found out about the hard way. If you ever have to deal with an officer and they find out you have a knife. Most every city has laws on just how long of a blade your knife can have to be legal to carry! His laws stated: the blade must measure under 3 inches in length. I guess 3 and an 1/8 wasn't under 3. Under 3 seems to be a standard but it can be much shorter in certain areas so just be aware.... That's all I'm trying to tell everyone! Great video! And now you got me wanting a new knife. A guy can never have enough knives! Only thing is... Either I missed you telling some of the lengths or they weren't told. I'll rewatch to see which ones are under 3.... That's the law in my city also! Later! 👍👏💯🏆🏁🇺🇸
Very well done, and very good information. I own Buck Knives, and their warranty is second to none. I didn't know they made such an inexpensive knife! I also own Gerber and SOG knives. Happy with both those as well. But those cheap knives that performed well, I will need to take a serious look at for EDC. Cheers from Winnipeg.
Ah man, these are probably amazon brands but I wish the iconic $10 ozark trail slide lock knife was on here. It's so popular Walmart can't keep them in stock.
I just picked up a couple of them last week. Really impressed. My favorite brand is Spyderco, but have a variety of Benchmade, Gerber, Kershaw.,,... I really like the Ozark Trail's copy of the axis-lock with ball bearings. I was also able to shave arm hair right out of the package.
Knife community people should love this type of video, I know I do! I'd love to see many more of this type of video, testing knife durability across different styles of crossbar lock. For example, the Spyderco Manix 2, Microtech MSI, & Benchmade Bugout are all made in the USA & have slightly different implementations of the crossbar-style lock. All have premium steel as well. I can vouch for Kizer, Civivi & CJRB knives, they are outstanding for the price. Kizer has been particularly impressive lately. Every factory edge I've had from all of these Chinese brands has been satisfactory at minimum, & in most cases they're extremely sharp. Thanks for doing this comparison, the knife community is definitely watching! 🙂
I’m a knife collector as I stated in other of your knife related videos. Kershaw and Zero Tolerance are the same company, ZT is the high end line. Sharpness out of the box can vary by knife, Civivi are normally pretty sharp out the box for an inexpensive knife, btw their higher end line is We knife company. Civivi and CRJB are generally considered two of the better inexpensive knife brands. The quality of the steel, the way the knife was heat treated and the type of steel will make a difference on how well it holds its edge sharpness. In general you can sharpen all knives to equal sharpness, harder and in general more expensive steels will take longer to get to the same sharpness, since the steel is harder. Thus they will hold their sharpness longer. My everyday carry knife currently is a CRJB ($35). I prefer Civivi/We as my favorite to carry. The knives are well made, smooth pivots movement and they treat their steel well and thus hold the sharpness well for inexpensive knives. I will not care super expensive knives as everyday carry, as I treat them as more of a collectible. My friend on the other hand well carry $700-1500 knives everyday.
Love that bess tester, so cool to have that option and repeatability at home. I've been digging my feldspar for over four years now, edge strops back to sharp enough with little passes. That wicked edge looks awesome and easy to use. The civivi is impressive for the money, I have a few of them as they're good bang for the buck. I'd pick the zt if I had a choice of the bunch I think for its size, aesthetics, and ambi clip. Merry Christmas Todd, thanks for this, knives are one of my baby budget passions.
Another great video and a great budget knife option! It would be interesting to see what craft knives and blades are best. I often use craft knives for repetitive cutting since it's much easier to snap off part of the blade instead of resharpening one of my folding knives.
I look forward to these videos every Sunday. I would like to see some testing on lots of stuff, but here are a few: -home solar panels (I think you did some solar panel testing but I don’t remember which types) -cordless miter saws (either 10” or 7-1/4” but would all need to be the same size to make it fair) -best methods/oils to use for nonstick seasoning on cast iron and which keeps the cast iron protected the longest
It's been a long time since the last knife review and the budget knives have improved by quite a bit in my opinion! The good ones open smoothly and effortlessly! More details in the video description! Wishing everyone a safe holidays and a Merry Christmas! Todd

Thanks! Thanks for the constructive feedback.
@@ProjectFarm You do great work every time!
I still have the Buck knife from when I was growing up on the farm. I'm now 66 years old.
Nice!
I just posted that I still have my Buck 110 from my Army days '73'-76. I'm now 69 and we are both doing fine :)
I’m a lefty, and I absolutely despise liner lock designs. One of the best for lefties is the cross pin lock. As a knife fan, I appreciate the frequent updates to your knife reviews! Thank you sir
I feel your pain, from a fellow lefty.
Really? I'm a lefty and a knife collector. Most of the knives I own are frame lock and liner lock knives and I've never had a single problem with either and I can do everything that a right-handed person can do with them with ease. Just have to manipulate it slightly differently in hand. Not a big deal.
@@joet81 yeah my experience as someone who is extremely right handed left hand is borderline useless I usually can manipulate liners with my left but I can see why a lefty wouldn't like them
As a sinister individual you need to adapt to a righteous world.
You might like the axis lock on the Benchmade knifes
Its nice that each knifes steel is listed. This has a huge influence in its edge holding, toughness and ease of sharpening. Some of these are very expensive premium high end steels.
Great point!
Try one with Nitro V steel. It can hold a crazy sharp edge
@@Sargent43 Good to know, thanks for the suggestion
@@TheBoringCory What's the steel type?
I'm not even done with the video and I already know the Civivi crushed it.
They make great budget knives. The Elementum II (button lock) is probably the king of the sub $50 knives.
As a (small) knife collector. I was kinda surprised that the Kizer came with such a dull blade from the factory. Cause none of mine have been that bad.
Not surprised with the Civivi though. They make some of the absolute best knives, when you factor in the price.
Imo. Nothing beats their Elementum II
@@maxmoller A 5 minute sharpening tho and the Kizer seems like a pretty solid knife for under $40!
I bought a Benchmade 940 earlier this year after doing plenty of research including from this channel. It was pricey, but I use it every day and think it was well worth the price. Expensive products aren't for everyone, but there's something to be said about quality craftsmanship.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing.

This is the best channel on the UA-cam. I'm never needing another pocket knife as I'm very happy with my Gerber EZ out. And I have two extra new in box. But I watched this intently and paused and rewatched a large portion of this. Love your work.
Thanks!
I bought the Smith & Wesson on Amazon for $12 back in 2022 as the best seller. It’s still works well for me during travel and it’s used to cut Costco rotisserie chicken

Thanks for sharing.
🇺🇸 thank you
@ 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Agree. I've carried a civivi for years. I'd recommend spending just a little more on the d2 version.
Thanks, I will definitely try one. Do you have a specific recommendation? I have carried the cheapest or whatever has been on sale. The Icon was my first "expensive" knife (goes on sale for $30 all the time) and it has been great. I am by far not a knife expert, or even an enthusiast.
@@sk0.0t3r I have a Nitro V conspirator and love it. The nitro V steel sharpens up easily and holds the edge. It was $90 and worth every penny imo.
20k views per hour very well deserved. Merry Christmas Todd and thank you from all of us watching!
Merry Christmas!
Thank you!
You are welcome! Thanks for sharing.
The Kershaw leek is a great carry knife
Coolant additives test

I have the Icon and Civivi knives, and my experience using them matches the test outcomes. Both are excellent, especially at their price points. Very timely video! Knives have gotten so good that I have started collecting them.
Thanks for sharing.
Great point! I'll have to put together another review soon
Great recommendation ! Cedic & Ada is 100% objective & entertaining as well. I'm a 'knife guy' & he puts a lot of effort into his edge retention testing.
Also, no shilling, as many other knife channels do.
The "cheaper" brands also do great like Sencut and Tenable. Basically same knives just cheaper materials and steels.
All Civivi blades can be easily broken in half with little to no effort. Look up the destruction tests on other channels.
I bought the Dreo heater that was recently reviewed and it was the smallest and the best out of all my heaters. I love this channel.

Always love the videos! Will rotate carry with my Civivi, Spyderco, and (GASP) WalMart Ozark Trail (should be in test also)
Honestly, you’re super talented. Keep posting more!
Thanks, great stuff. I'm a 'knife guy' so would only have tested about 5 of the ones you selected here. But I think your selection was good for the average person that might be in the market to buy a knife. Really appreciate your scientific methods of testing these.

Agree. I went with the information in the listing, and should have trusted my eyes. lol
CRKT CEO is my edc and it would score much better than this pagoda. I love it for it's slim design and Japanese stainless blade.
That mistake surprised me. I figured someone had already made this correction in the comments. 👍
My new blades are Ganzo Firebirds for only $27 in D2... GREAT action and really takes an edge! Civivi also makes some great blades for around the same price. Thanks!

It's D2 steel too. I can't imagine how hard it is too keep track of everything he's testing!
Great job on these past vids todd, hmm hows about different windshield ice scraper tools?

I've been carrying that same Civivi for going on 2 years now. Very nice knife and has held up well. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for another awesome video! I love my Benchmade. It’s made in USA, reasonably priced, and has proven to be very durable.
I predict a Benchmade or Zero Tolerance is gonna win.
You are right indeed! Great knives!
The orange $10 Ozark Trail knife that has taken the internet by storm would have been an excellent contestant for this video.
People are paying $30-40 for them online which cracks me up. It's passable for retail price, but for even $25 I'd rather have a Ganzo!
@@dubester1982 Agreed. I had a couple FH-41 model and only sold them due to thickness in pocket. Moved to WE Knives Banter a thin pocket blade.
I don't know if it's taken the internet by storm since I've never heard of it. 😅
Later! 👍👏💯🏆🏁🇺🇸
One thing I love about Alaska is there are no knife restrictions of any kind here.

Wow, but it’s still overpriced at $29.99 That’s a $15.00 knife at best

I recently purchased the Icon knife when it went on sale for $29.99. Its my everyday carry knife and I am very happy with it.
Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome! Merry Christmas!
Another great video and a great budget knife option! It would be interesting to see what craft knives and blades are best. I often use craft knives for repetitive cutting since it's much easier to snap off part of the blade instead of resharpening one of my folding knives.
I look forward to these videos every Sunday. I would like to see some testing on lots of stuff, but here are a few:
-home solar panels (I think you did some solar panel testing but I don’t remember which types)
-cordless miter saws (either 10” or 7-1/4” but would all need to be the same size to make it fair)
-best methods/oils to use for nonstick seasoning on cast iron and which keeps the cast iron protected the longest
