Great to see our city through your eyes. The Wide Bay Bar can be easy, but needs respect like you gave it. Our friends in a much larger boat than yours were smashed by a wave that came out of nowhere. Just so folks know, the Tin Can Bay Coastguard is a fully volunteer run service that is funded by donations from folks like yourself. I guess if they had the money or free expertise they would produce a web based advisory. The advantage of folks calling them is that they watch your progress all the way in or out, and can activate a rescue very quickly if required. They are a very dedicated group of people, looking out for folks like us.
Advise if you like your fried fish juicy in the inside but crispy in the outside= place a couple of tablespoon full of flour in a plastic bag. Put the fish fillets in the bag with the flour. Vigorous shake! Fish coated with flour and ready for the pan!
Thanks for the super episode! Always neat to hear your explanations and see your approaches to different sailing and sea conditions and areas. Certainly looks like it was another beautiful area visited. Wishing you all the best.
Nice flat bar crossing. Well done guys. The wide bar is arguably the most dangerous in Australia when the swell is running. Hundreds of vessels have come unstuck on it over the years.
Once again, James, the consummate mariner, shows us how it should be done. Common sense and preparation. When I saw the title of the episode I started to sweat.
It's Fraser island, named after Eliza Fraser, sole survivor of an 1800s Shipwreck, one of many on that coastline all the way north, good sailing and all the best ,but stay vigilant don't push hard stay safe, take your time,, and no rush best reef ecosystem on the Planet bar none...
It’s all in the timing. your crossing of the Wide bay bar couldn’t have been better. When the breaking waves on either side of the entrance in bad weather has your heart in your throat. You did well. 🎉
This was one fine "cruising sailor video" beginning with your insights of the challenges and dealing with them. Rhonda is an astute helmswoman. Then polished with the fine production. Love ya!
Mate another great Vid and it's refreshing to hear you calling the island by its right name 😊 & Rhonda! well She's a keeper. You both make a lovely couple. keep up the great work and safe travels.
@@SailorJamesI love that you call it Frasier Island. I'm a fan of Frasier and you pronounce Moreton the same way that I did before being corrected. Did you know that you also passed Gilligans Island on the way up the bay?
Ya making me hungry just looking at that delicious fish, well done on catching ya 1st fish in Oz, hope ya luck continues. Looks like we had similar conditions crossing the bar. Fair winds guys
I surfed thru that passage last August, 22kn SE with 3m seas. Hit it at the top of the high tide watching the ocean becalmed in front of me as l trusted the same path you both did. The waves that smash upwards around the shoal barrier were 8m plus! I got 13.1kn on the Beneteau oceanis 40ft.
Great video. There's a "lazy" way to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius in "normal" shirt/jumper weather. Subtract 30 then divide by 2. E.g. 70-30=40. 40/2= 20 approximately. Actually 21.1C. Outside those normal ranges the correct formula is needed.
@@SailorJames say after me "Subtract 30, divide by 2." Easy peasy. And if Rhonda wants to help you go in the other direction, double then add 30. Approximately. Very.
Nice one - bumping up the omega 3s with that mack! I've always seen the rod hung up on the wall & wondered if you used it much. I thought Rhonda might have been vego too given the amazing dishes I've seen her cook. Despite the initial investment (and motor repairs!), Fishing must really fortify the freedom of sailing the world. Lot's of wind power, lot's of free food. I mean you could harvest oysters, even seaweeds on top of fish, crabs, squid. Traversing by land in your own vehicle can't even compare. Do you have some sort of rainwater catchment system on the boat too? I'm sure some sailors really mod things for self-sufficiency. Anyway, very cool - cheers guys.
@@SailorJames With respect, No. way. Hit up UA-cam for technique etc - you should be living off of fish with your offshore capabilities and dinghy in bays etc. Worse case get a speargun & dive.
James you are way better at filleting than me. You looked confident and competent. I can catch & gut… but last one I tried to filet ended up being fed to the cat.
I double checked and they aren't the same as scipjack which is a bonita. A page said anothe r name for Meckerel Tuna is kawakawa, and that it was part of the Mackerel family. I'll bet it was tasty.
Hi James and Rhonda , Moreton Bay is one of the dangerous waters around in Queensland because it is so shallow and when the winds come so does the waves and it gets as rough as anything and a lot of people get caught out start so beautiful in the morning and by afternoon it’s like you’re in hell, anyway you sail around the world. You should know a lot about these crazy weather and crazy waters. I don’t have to tell you too much.
While not the tastiest fish it SURELY is ULTRA healthy in fatty acids and such.... Food can be Medicinal and sounds like you enjoyed it. I always eat a couple Macks or even Bluefish every year for health purposes!!
@@SailorJamesJames, Mr Pedantic here. Please note that your own navigation chart (as shown in your video) says “FRASER ISLAND”, not “Frasier” island. Fraser Island (now known officially as K’gari, as a somewhat belated recognition of the traditional owners’ name for it for probably thousands of years) was the correct name. Just call it K’gari or, if you must, Fraser Island.
@@SailorJames @SailorJames It showed up on my receipts and bank. I don't see it on the comments. I wasn't going to say anything but I hate they haven't given it to you bro. I can't figure out how to even tell them
Yes in NSW. Not in Queensland. Very dodgy there because you can fish ok on oneside of the Tweed river, but not the other. Also different laws governing fishing ftom your tender, which probably don't apply to US registered vessels. Stand on soveriegn rights if approached by state authorities. Explain that your overseas registered vessel is considered the territory of your registered country.
And people wonder why more, and more sailors are switching to electric propulsion. I can only imagine how much money you would save, if you changed Triteia's propulsion system.
Quoted $26,000 to convert our boat to electric power. It didn't use a tenth of that in diesel to sail half way around the world. Also you need an electrical certification done for your insurance. And if you don't have insurance you can't enter a marina to charge your batteries.
I just wish everyone knew the history of Eliza Fraser, she claimed she was captured and tortured by the local tribe on the island, this led to their dispossession. She was known as a “mad woman” and clearly lied about the Aborigines as others had always seen them as peaceful. Rather than remember the island by someone who had Aborigines driven off their land and killed the name of the island is now K’gari.

The reason that you can't access a website for the barr navigation details is that the information comes from volunteers most of the time.
It takes less work to post it once to a website than answer every call . They have a website so the “volunteer” excuse makes no sense
The volunteers do it because there's literally no none willing to set up the website. It makes sense from a limited resources mindset.
They have a website

It bled out into a bucket , just didn’t drag it behind a boat
How much fuel does Tritiea hold, and how much on average does it cost to fill up?
15 gallons in the main tank and 5 Jerry cans so 40 gallons total onboard. I think my last full up was $200aud
Hey..
That fish, was it nice and oily?
Might make you get up oily in the morning l;)
