A crew hit a reef. .. and wrecked their boat, it was marked but wasnt shown on their sailing chart view. He went on to show how it only appeared when further zoomed in but dissapeared with no warning when pulled out. If it hapens in one place it can happen in others with other systems 🤔😬
I grew up in Cairns and Kuranda, and my father was a master mariner, so I got to spend a lot of time out on the water, as he was in fairly high demand and I ended up on all sorts of boats from trawlers, to game boats, to big motherships etc etc etc. In the late 80's, the big game fishing boat he was skippering at the time, got chartered by Marine Parks and Wildlife to take a group of scientists, from right down the coast all the way to the very top of Australian waters. It was for a bird survey and we stopped at every single island between Gladstone all the way up to Saibai Island just off the PNG coast. That was an amazing 7 week trip for a kid around 10yrs old. I also got to spend school holidays up at Torres Strait when my dad was the captain and superintendent of the MV Kennedy. The Kennedy was moored off Mabuiag Island and we were basically a processing and freezer ship for crayfish tails. That was an absolute idyllic place and about as close to real paradise as its possible to get. I got my childhood split between the reef and the4 rainforest and boarding school. I used to curse not having a nice suburban upbringing like my friends had....but as I got older, I realised just how lucky I actually was, and how absolutely awesome my childhood was thanks to my parents. I wouldn't change a thing! My very favourite place on the QLD coast though is a place we stopped at when taking the MV Kennedy back down to Cairns for a refit. I think it's called Albany Passage and is right at the very tip, between Albany Island and the mainland. We went ashore and checked out some aboriginal artwork on the rocks that my dad knew about, There was absolutely nothing up there then. Just a small pearl or oyster farm and homestead on the beach of the Island. This was the late 80s/90's and it was all still pretty much perfect. The water was as clear as air and as flat as a pane of glass with the light rays going all the way to the white sand on the bottom. I remember looking over the side as we anchored, fairly close to shore, and looking at the fish swimming around coral, all literally a stones throw from the shore. in the morning at dawn, it was as still as glass again and that golden light gave the whole place a totally magical feel to it. That, still, is the closest I've ever been to a true Paradise on Earth.....and that's after visiting some truly amazing and beautiful places over the decades....that place was so perfect that it felt totally surreal. So, pop in there if you get a chance and pull up for a few days...and if you do, I really hope that it's as nice for you guys as it was for me all that time ago.

One fellow there, username “paintar”, posted from his YT chan. All/only vids of ships arriving or departing, and the tugs. Always a nice music added, stately/majestic as ships move, and always in good weather iirc (lol). Apparently I never subbed his chan, don’t remember the chan name,, and came up empty on a search.
@@johnnyliminal8032 I've always wanted to visit Canada and Alaska! Its the only item on my bucket list. I wanna buy a car and drive from coast to coast....and back again lol. That's a shame, but I'm sure there would be other locals posting vids from Cairns and surrounds. Also, 'winter', or just the Dry Season for the locals, is perfect for months on end. Though the wet season can get a bit hectic, but that's a great time to enjoy the actual rainforest (and it's fun for the locals as it cools off the furnace-like temps and crazy humidity during the monsoon build-up, which absolutely sends people 'tropo'). Its seen as the tourist 'off-season', so a traveller can get discounts and there's no crowds. You can also witness incredible spectacles like the Barron Falls in Kuranda in full flood (google it). I used to live 4km away and our whole house would vibrate from the rumbling. You can head up the Kuranda Range to the Atherton Tablelands and the climate is more like SE Queensland. The entirety of Far North Queensland and Cape York is amazing and well worth a visit.

I have driven Ontario - Alberta multiple times, both ways. And Ontario to the eastern provinces, and Alberta to various Pacific shores. Rode a motorcycle round trip from southern Ontario to San Fran, two weeks total. I don’t ride any more, but if you do then maybe think of buying a bike.
These islands seem so remote and the video left me with an impression of how alone you are together. Very cool, but a little scary, too. Thanks for having the courage and tenacity to take me places I would otherwise never see!
Another great vid from you two. I like how you give your latitude and longitude at the start...getting closer to the equator! How far north are you going before heading westward?
Sadly, we are entering Fall where I reside ( I refer to it as "the f word" )..I can live vicariously on occasion, in an endless Summer, through this channel. Thank You. It is a treat to see the world via the sea.
The islands up there are just beautiful. it'd make some fond memories to explore that area. All that washed up coral, looks so pristine. Watching your moves on the tracker and love reading your daily notes. Thinking of you Rhonda as you set out on your first ocean voyage. Happy Sails!!
Hi James....hey just a question chap. Are there any single handed...30 to 34ft boats currently being built for ocean crossings. Or are the only options buying 20 to 40 year old boats? Encapsulated keels don't appear anywhere on "new" designed ocean going cruisers. I know ppl are rather down on the so called floating condo's but isn't that a little on the snobby side. Like I'll always own a Harley and never a Japanese bike? I too have a sense for the "rustic" but if they aren't any longer being made new , is small single handed sailing Era in jeopardy of becoming a thing of the past? As a hypothetical ......if for some horrendous reason you lost tritea, and the only boat you could 'replace" her with HAD to be NO more than 20 years..... what you buy?.......if anything at all?
Acknowledging that “floating condos” aren’t blue water boats has nothing to do with being “snobby” giant open floor plan boats are very dangerous in a sea way. They are made for coastal cruising. Hallberg-Rassy still makes serious brand new blue water boats

Meantime on land we have to dodge Crooks, conmen and dubious narcissistic Politicians and religious people . If their bodies and the boat can hack it, it's their choice... until it's not. 🤷🏻🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧 When you live on an island your surrounded by water.. some hobbits like travel and meeting other people's. It's not Earth 🌏 so much as water 🌊 💦 it touches everything everywhere like the air.
