  • Episode 375 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia
    Hello Friends,
    On this episode we depart Port Stephens in storms to continue our push North to Queensland. The passages from New South Wales to Queensland were some of the most brutal I have experienced, and not because of weather or big seas, but because of the East Australian Current that runs down the coast from Brisbane, making progress very slow and grueling. We averaged 3.5 knots in 24 Horus on some of the legs of this passage, with full motor on and sails up. Clawing our way up the coast was agonizing.
    This video is just a collection of the "highlights" as I dont film day after day of motoring up the coast, because it's simply not that interesting.

    I really enjoy how James always cuts to the next scene with a 1-2 second pause where he stares into the camera. It really is signatory and unique and kinda works subconsciously since it’s an intensely personal stare.

Reminded me though of the time we lost our engine power and had to come into the marina under sail, drop the sails, do a Uturn to slow the boat, jump off and use the ropes to pull her in and slow her more for a side slip we thankfully found. Then walk our way around to our own slip with enough help. 😂😂😂😅😅😅

    The NSW coast north of Port Stephens doesn’t have a lot of protection but if you are willing to cross a few bars there are some great spots to hang out like Camden Haven and the Clarence River which is a cruising destination in its own right. The bars usually aren’t much of a problem if you are sensible about timing. That being said you need to treat them with respect.

    Well done on the docking Rhonda. I've always found it really useful to work out where the pivot point of the boat is, when maneuvering under power. If you've got that in the back of your mind, it's always easier. Keep up the good work, you’ve made a great start, with practice you might get better than James.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  Місяць тому

      Considering she had never driven in close quarters there is no way she could have really known the pivot point of the boat, that only comes with doing it over and over

    • @danielhicks7141
      @danielhicks7141 Місяць тому

      @SailorJames yep fair enough. When training people on the big scow up the river at Warkworth, I tell them where the pivot point is so they've got some idea, but we are dealing with 50 tons and 80ft of boat. It's great to see you giving her a go, the more she can do, the safer it is for both of you.

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  Місяць тому +1

      I spent years driving forklifts, this made driving boats in tight places much easier than it would have if I hadn’t. Like you said it’s all about knowing the boats pivot point

    Good job Rhonda! Good to hear the diesel motor humming perfectly now. I sailed from Moreton Bay to Sydney about 10yrs ago and went from Moreton Bay to Southport via the Waterways, it was interesting. I recall having to anchor midway (my boat's draft about 5'6") and wait a couple of hours for the tide to come up to be able to get through.

      Current doesn’t matter, it could be dead calm an no one on this planet could back Triteia up in straight line, 7 years with this boat and trust me, never gonna happen.
      The motor thing sucked but she is running good now.

    Docking is more stressful than sailing, Should you race the diesel in idle after low rpm loads to clear un burnt carbon off the valve seats before shutting it down ? Not sure but heard that is good ?? Fantastic sailing Thank you for all your work in sharing.

    Your heading up towards the Top corner then accross the Torres straits at some point... Im guessing... but its sort of the reverse of the Aboriginal peoples migration route 60,000 yrs ago... see if you come across the different styles of art en route. 😎🌏🌌

    I've watched enough of these sailing videos to know I would never want to deal with diesel engines. That seems to be the biggest headache by far. It would have to be electric motors that also can act as hydro generators. Even if it costs 5x more it would still be worth it to me. Practically speaking, you still need a gas/diesel generator as backup to batteries and to help keep them charged in order to have the same range, but that's better than relying 100% on an old diesel engine, with a bunch of moving parts, for motoring imo. Yes, there are some major issues trying to do it this way, like the weight of the batteries, trying to keep everything dry, and the fact it may not be practical on older boats that were never designed for it.

    • @SailorJames

      Your inexperience speaks loud and clear on this subject

    • @samiam8114
      @samiam8114 Місяць тому

      I am aware that it is quite expensive to do it right, and that diesel has a much higher mass energy density compare to lithium batteries, and that it may not be very practical on an old boat that was never designed for it, but it is possible. What am I missing?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  Місяць тому

      You are missing so much. Like the fact that it’s impossible to compare the range and reliability of a diesel engine to an electric motor. With an electric motor you are basically committing to sailing engineless due to the fact that there is no realistic way to keep the batteries topped up compared to adding more diesel fuel

      Thanks for your update. Given your plans to sail to South East Asia, please be aware that Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, (and I believe Indonesia too), each have a mandatory requirement for ALL foreign vessels to be equipped with an AIS transponder and thereafter display a valid MMSI registration. Sorry but it's their rules so you will need an AIS "transponder".
