Integrated handlebars is why I went with an s-works aethos. I like disc brakes but I still adhere to the forever bike mindset. There’s very little proprietary on the aethos. Sure the frame isn’t aero, but I’m a 74kg 178cm rider - it’s my position that counts. I maintain my own bikes, so the marginal gains of an integrated bar stem combo just isn’t worth it to me.

Mid range and higher road bikes should all basically be customizable builds at this point. Have the option for a standard build at a discount, or let me pick the frame and everything else on it for a small premium. Then they can build inventory around what riders actually want.
Lurking commuter here taking the bait, I commute 70 km to work from the Hawkesbury into our resplendent Sydney city, I really froth over the value of doing z2 and getting to work at the same time. You will struggle if you look for resources to outline a route for you, but there is good and safe commuting to be had if you're willing to research and test routes yourself (I'm talking google earth to check the width of shoulders on the roads you're interested in trying). I can also confirm that I'm not the only one, there are plenty of commuters cycling in Sydney, but you have to be up early to catch us.

Your discussion on bike fit, handlebars, swapping out parts is the exact reason why I bought an Aethos. Standard 27.2 round seatpost. Standard bar and stem. Exposed cables. No proprietary parts. Easy swap of any part on the bike. Simplicity is king.
Except the seat clamp is proprietary, and it takes ELECTRONIC shifting only 😅. I have an aethos, and believe me I did not expect these two to become an issue when I was trying to build my “no frills” bike.

There was a bunch of around 20 at the start going at a strong pace trying to catch the 2 groups ahead (hard to know if you caugh everyone). It was pure attrition to the end till only 3 of us cross the line. So I was competitive, didnt stop, didnt even notice the scenery when my wife asked me if it was beautiful afterwards 😝 just suck wheels and punch climbs Regarding 'fondo etiquette' I did jump on the back of a fast rider till I realised that he was doing the 150k (purple tag). So I decide to drop off as it might not be the right fondo etiquette. Also, you will need to get the new Maurten 160 gel if you want 40g carb. Similar to the SIS beta fuel gels. Cache stocks Maurten160.
Bar tape. I used to love the fizik gloss white bar tape. So easy to clean and didn't soak up anything much from hands. Lasted ages and stayed clean looking for much longer than others. But then they stopped making it which was a real bummer.
Funny you mention how limited a fit can be with an integrated bike. I was recently fitting a guy with a Cervelo R5 with a zero offset post (slammed all the way back), and a 110mm stem with internal hoses through the bars and stem. He needed to go shorter and further back. I pretty much said "I got nothing for you". I can tell you what to do, but I can't do it for you. You are welcome to come back with your changes and we can see what else we can fine tune.
Bike Shop repair wait times and hourly rates in Sydney is ridiculous. Best thing is to get to know your bikes and doing your own repairs where possible.
Did the Tour d’lac in Geneva. 175km, average speed was over 40kph - it was 100% a race. Only thing stopping a 30 man sprint at the finish was the road layout in the final 1km.
If you're particular about bikefit and like to tinker as you are and I am as well. You got to have the tools and be able to swap out parts, hoses and re bleed brakes yourself. This will save money and time waiting on bike shop, with the money saved you can buy even more new bike stuff :D
100%.... I did my own brake lines and bleeding.. routing thru bars... first time and no problem at all... first DIY pays for bleed kit etc. Who would leave their beloved carbon race bike with a business anyway???
The body needs to adapt, not the other way around. High-end road bikes are made for people that are flexible and have been racing or are involved more seriously in the sport. If anyone else is looking to get comfortable and try fitting the bike to them then they shouldn't even be involved in such a high-end bike. The bike is designed to put you in the position where you're going to be more aggressive. The cockpit can be raised and lowered. What else can you ask for? People who end up buying these high-end bikes and feel uncomfortable on them and start to put 30 spacers and that's not enough so they put an extension lmfaooo00 just get a hybrid. Most of the people that get these bikes they get them and then they go back to the shop. Giving the bike shop a hard time on how to get this person comfortable on a race bike. It's like someone goes and purchases a sports car and then goes back and tells the guy hey listen. This thing is really bumpy. I feel everything. What can we do? Can we put like a new suspension on it? I mean, are you serious? Go get a truck bro. You understand? Every bike I got I slammed the cockpit and I fit my fat ass to it. I lost weight or whatever I had to do. You fit yourself to the bike. You don't fit the bike to you. If that's the case go get a hybrid. You feel me?

Agree with Jesse on the Fondo etiquette. It's not billed as a race nor are the ride volunteers prepared for "racers" blasting through town/intersections/turns/etc. at 30 mph race pace for not-a-race. These are fun rides. What's next, racing in local centuries, blasting through rest stops, blowing slower riders off the road, etc.?
Why is the whole thing timed then? And why are there 'world champs' then? If the only place you're supposed to attack is the big hill then that's the part which should be timed.
On the broken pedal, I don't think that I would have switched pedal systems the day before the next event, however, I would have readily moved from a Look Assiomo to a standard Look pedal.

TOTALLY my issue with new bikes - fewer and fewer adjustments! And it becomes so expensive if you need to make changes. And not to mention the faff of travelling with a fully integrated set up in a bike bag / box! 😏

I reckon the SL7, Propel and the like get integrated right. Cables through the bars, but under the stem and with split spacers. You can swap stems pretty easily as long as you have enough slack in the hydraulic hoses, but still looks sick. Full stem/bar combos, or running the hoses through the stem like the S5 are a step too far unless you already know your fit is dialed.
Finally, somebody who gets the idea. I once had to swap my customer's third-generation Venge's stem for a shorter one and thanks to the under-stem routing configuration, I was able to swap it in no time like a regular stem. This is the only front-end configuration I'll ever consider for road bikes with integrated internal routing. (two-piece cockpit + no internal routing in the stem)
If I was buying a S5 or Canyon etc. I'd 100% get a bike fit prior to purchasing. Fit first buy later is defo required for these sort of bikes. Tbh I wouldnt go to any bike fitter who doesn't do the fit on a Jig (like retul but not retul as that system is shite).
You can put a standard two piece handlebar and stem on bikes (including the canyon aeroad) and deal with the ugly setup for a few weeks/months until you decide what works for you and go with a one piece cockpit that fits that
Agree. You can use Geometry Geeks compare to see the differences, and even simulate them on your existing bike. This is useful for the new Madone and Time machine R, with the trendy narrow to flared bars.
If I was given a frame one size to big as a replacement, I too would probably not chose to ride purely from a safety stand point for myself and and riders around me. I'd naturally ride it as if it were the right size expecting the same reactions from the bike but because it is bigger, that reaction window narrows down which could cause a mid corner lean correction to then go off line putting other riders at risk. This topic all goes back to being in-tune with your kit to a level that its "apart" of your body and the confidence that brings with it.
In the US Trek is making big investments in the high school mountain bike scene and it seems to be working like gangbusters. They offer a 25% discount to all riders and coaches (most of the parents are coaches). Because of this you see mostly Treks at these races by a longshot and these are kids just getting started in a lifetime sport and tons of them are quickly becoming attached to the brand.
A lot of this talk seems to be because their AUS. They might be culturally western but they are economically distinctly eastern. I used to think the US was on another planet relative to EU. But AUS seems another solar system.
Considering your chat about aero bikes, few years ago there were two Merida Reactos. Bikes marked with E-series have a different carbon layup and also shorter headtube. In other aspects, regular Reacto was pretty much the same, which makes it more relaxed aero bike for regular people. Same goes with Bianchi: they have more relaxed aero bike (Aria) and more aggressive one (Oltre).
I blame Dave Arthur for pushing the integration plague! Mega $$$,huge fit limitations,resale problems etc etc Manufacturers love locking buyers into proprietary systems. We need to push back.
Mate I rode with did Coonabarabran Gunnedah on a bike where saddle had completely come off. Road A grade out of saddle from 15k in. Laughed at his predicament the entire race. He finished it. Was about 1991-92
Trek has 22.5% of the market share of bikes in the U.S. second is giant at only 10.5%, specialized third at 9.5%. They are everywhere in the U.S. I live in the DC area and id say 5 out of every 10 bikes you see out are Treks, maybe even more. Most people buy what is at their local shop and Trek is in a hell of a lot of local shops here. They have decent warranties on parts so if something breaks you take it to the shop and have them deal with it rather than sending it in yourself.
Yes, I live in Alexandria, VA. There are four Trek bike shops within 45 minutes of my house. Why do most Trek bike owners choose orange/red? Yikes. Maybe they glow in the dark.
Treks fill the sort of 'person with a decent amount of disposable income but not super serious or knowledgeable about cycling' demographic, which is large but not cool. They are ugly bikes imo. The Madone is so chunky and bizarre...dunno how anyone thinks that looks cool. Treks always have this big arched back look of a curved top tube and curved seat stays that look more like what you see in fancy handmade rando bikes or old fart endurance bikes than cool race bikes.
What bugs me the most when it comes to bikefit that most bikes come with too wide bars and too long cranks for their size. Which means, buying a new bike instantly means replacing crankset and handlebar at least. When do bike manufacturers stop selling 42cm handlebars on Small or Medium bikes (52/54), I think people who ride these bikes have 38, maybe 40 cm wide shoulderbones and relatively short for a 172.5mm crankarm. No surprise that aftermarket 38-40mm handlebars are out of stock everywhere... :/

My Time Scylon doesn’t have an integrated cockpit but I look at it this way, any aero loss I have can be made up by ensuring my position/bike fit is accurate.
Picked up a MINT R5 frame for 2200 USD. Not cheap but a whopping 3300 USD less (even more if you factor in taxes) than brand new. There's not a spot on it. So happy with that. It's one of the best riding bikes I've owned and I love the integrated but accessible front end so much (cables are hidden in external groves of handlebar instead of inside). Alpitude saddle, Duraace group, Reserve 44/47 wheels, Favero Assima Duos, Elite bottle cages and stock computer mount. Total 6.84kg's.
I have a chapter 2 toa XS and 400mm / 80mm integrated stem ( ordered by discussing with Mike Pryde) only mess I made is 145 saddle Prologo and swapped it for E3 Infinity seat and 160mm crank from 170mm so now I have a better fit and yes got out of Look Keo pedals to +8mm SQ labs - isint bike fit an ongoing issue with physiology changes
Commuting in Sydney... you need a gravel bike. Anything over 5km and you're hitting what feels like gravel roads (footpaths/ backstreets), hills like bobbo and the need to race fat tire e-bikes - need the roadie gearing
@@ChrisMillerCycling You don't have any option due to the way the controls are wired. A single push button on the end of each tri bar, RH button to shift up and LH button to shift down.
As a bike fitter I have 3 rather vague requirements. 1st, put the rider within range of motion. If you’re within range of motion, pedaling the bike is called exercise. If you’re outside range of motion it’s called injury. 10 years ago I would veto an aggressive tri bike once in a while because I just couldn’t get them within range of motion. These days it happens far more. 2nd part is getting the riders body weight on the pedals. If the rider can’t pedal the bike in a big gear in their riding position, with their hands behind them, nothing I can do with the handlebars is going to help. It’s a simple concept, weight goes on your feet, not your hands. Watch yourself walk - you get the idea. Part 3 is dealing with asymmetry, this is where I complain about the quality control of the human body…
the canyon being the western giant is a bit of a mindbender to me, i've heard similar undertones when merida is mentioned. like not being up there with the brands most mentioned as the best of the best. despite both brands been ridden to memorable victories in the grand tours with the queens stage of la vuelta or the many tdf sprints, both have won recent editions of paris roubaix, both have won world championships and are found in the front of almost every race. both came out with brand new "non-performance based" bikes and booked a major win and both can be and have been beaten by riders who brought a giant to the fight. okay i get there's nuance and context and all that but they're all quite up there those pro peleton bikes and yet when considering the amount of headroom the productquality dept. has built in when these bikes hit the consumer market it turns out that actually none are up there. though given the prices are certainly up there the bikes could be and should be up there. it bends my mind sideways between fascination and frustration like a noodlewheel in rim brake aeroframe
I would not buy a full set just for a grand fondo. Would buy a cheapo set of keo pedals and replace the broken pedal while keeping the one assioma still acting as a single PM. Then would check and buy a replacement body, as assioma offers it (I have done this repair, it's easy, just one Allen bolt to screw and tighten). After the repair, keep the keo cheapo set in the car boot, in case this happens again. Dual power is not the holy grail, someone is acting like a drama queen. *cough cough*
People are paying hundreds if not over a thousand dollars for hidden cables.. and the issue of integrated handlebars is really really funny because if you ride a 120 or 130.. you have to put on a regular old school bar and stem for fitting and then take a deep breath and pay for the integrated bars that are you buy it and if don't love it there is almost nobody to sell it to on the used market.. which after all bars from a person instead of the manufacturer are used even if they were never used.. when I was fitted years ago..guy had 110,120,130 w 40,42 and 44 hanging on the wall.. some had old Shimano levers . many people experimented w cams in the cranks and stem for movement but it was never strong enough..I think Look is the only one with the ability to shorten the cranks and stem
Have a look for forum posts about the Assioma to SPD conversion, there are numerous pedal bodies that will fit on the assioma spindle in both SPD and SPD-SL, just usually not Shimano pedals. I’ve been running Bontrager SPD pedals with my dual-sided Assiomas for over a year now with no isssue.
It would be nice if someone could make white bar tape that you can clean. The tacky feeling feature makes them impossible to clean. I've resorted to the pimpled track bar grips. They are scrubbable but they only cover the drops.
Integrated bar question. If I found a new bar that had 10mm less reach. Would a 10mm longer stem be a good fix? Would I have the same fit? Handle the same? Looking to make the 1 piece swap 😊.
Similar issue as you Chris with the Garmin, a text notification came up half way through my ride accidentally saved it trying to clear the pop up message. That wasn’t a big deal, continued on and did my intervals, stopped at a bathroom and paused it, another notification came up and I thought not going to get me this time Garmin, clicked the back button in the top corner the Garmin froze and lost the part of my ride with all the intervals! I share your frustration
Sydney Crit racing seems to be dominated by a more ‘suburban’ (whiter and trending more bogan) crowd, where as the younger more diverse group you are talking about is not really welcomed by that group.
I am highly sensitive to smells and stench and I have never washed my helmet pads 😂 Granted it’s second year of longer bike rides and without cycling cap under which took all the sweat previously exactly for the reason I didn’t want to wash my pads. Now I just don’t care. And omg with the bar tape Chris, just get a pair of gloves. They act a bit as a safety measure too. Eastern Europe is still cold enough in summer to wear them all summer. I am running the second year with my supacaz sticky kush and it shows some wear around where I put my hands. Granted I ride two bikes and 6k km a year. Will only replace it if it rips. Twice I’ve changed my handlebars too, so I re did it twice.
Always wear gloves, bar tape lasts forever then :) Varia auto turn off when Garmin turned off FTW. Spare pedals & shoes in the travel kit if travelling for an event.
Local weekend winter series crit, 30min ride from home. Five minutes before start you grab your bike and you have a rear puncture (clincher). Do you change the tube or bugger off?
the key thing for me with the new bikes is, you need to know exactly what you need and how your position will be beforehand. i mostly use bike insights for frames and i check drop/reach/etc of the bars beforehand and build up myself or with a shop. full bike sets sucks like hell because they come with 175 cranks and 42cm handlebars on 54s. for me full pre builds are dead. long live custom.

The only thing keeping Trek alive is that they are readily available in my area. They aren't the coolest looking bikes, and yet they are just as expensive as the more modern looking frames offered by other bike manufacturers. They also carry the "americano" following so there's that. Other brands (even specialized) don't have as many shops that sell their brand as much as Trek. Mechanically they aren't bad bikes, they're just, available, there and easier to shell out cash with something available vs. wait months for some model from another brand to become available.
I am literally going thru the nightmare of integrated bars/fit/looks myself. I cant believe is this difficult now. I'm putting together a Madone SLR project One. Couldnt get the proprietary barstem from Trek, had to find the next best thing; a Vision 5D., or so I thought. Spent a bunch of money and find out that the head spacer is in the way of the cable hole under the Vision bar.. WTF!!! I cant get the nice look and I'm potentially locked on a bike position! WTF!

I think integrated bars are fine if you have the position dialed in. Check geometry, adjust to your old bike, buy integrated.

That’s what I was able to do. A shop here in Brisbane does exactly that. At very good prices.

My Garmin froze on my Alpe d'Huez ride. I couldn't know if I did it in sub 1 hour. I switched to Wahoo. Now I have two Wahoos. They just work.

Regarding 'fondo etiquette' I did jump on the back of a fast rider till I realised that he was doing the 150k (purple tag). So I decide to drop off as it might not be the right fondo etiquette.
Also, you will need to get the new Maurten 160 gel if you want 40g carb. Similar to the SIS beta fuel gels. Cache stocks Maurten160.
Bar tape. I used to love the fizik gloss white bar tape. So easy to clean and didn't soak up anything much from hands. Lasted ages and stayed clean looking for much longer than others. But then they stopped making it which was a real bummer.

Funny you mention how limited a fit can be with an integrated bike. I was recently fitting a guy with a Cervelo R5 with a zero offset post (slammed all the way back), and a 110mm stem with internal hoses through the bars and stem. He needed to go shorter and further back. I pretty much said "I got nothing for you". I can tell you what to do, but I can't do it for you. You are welcome to come back with your changes and we can see what else we can fine tune.

Bike Shop repair wait times and hourly rates in Sydney is ridiculous. Best thing is to get to know your bikes and doing your own repairs where possible.
Did the Tour d’lac in Geneva. 175km, average speed was over 40kph - it was 100% a race. Only thing stopping a 30 man sprint at the finish was the road layout in the final 1km.
If you're particular about bikefit and like to tinker as you are and I am as well. You got to have the tools and be able to swap out parts, hoses and re bleed brakes yourself. This will save money and time waiting on bike shop, with the money saved you can buy even more new bike stuff :D
100%.... I did my own brake lines and bleeding.. routing thru bars... first time and no problem at all... first DIY pays for bleed kit etc. Who would leave their beloved carbon race bike with a business anyway???
I simply will not buy a bike with integrated handlebars. It’s just for marketing and not a benefit to buyers.
The body needs to adapt, not the other way around.
High-end road bikes are made for people that are flexible and have been racing or are involved more seriously in the sport.
If anyone else is looking to get comfortable and try fitting the bike to them then they shouldn't even be involved in such a high-end bike.
The bike is designed to put you in the position where you're going to be more aggressive. The cockpit can be raised and lowered. What else can you ask for?
People who end up buying these high-end bikes and feel uncomfortable on them and start to put 30 spacers and that's not enough so they put an extension lmfaooo00 just get a hybrid.
Most of the people that get these bikes they get them and then they go back to the shop. Giving the bike shop a hard time on how to get this person comfortable on a race bike.
It's like someone goes and purchases a sports car and then goes back and tells the guy hey listen. This thing is really bumpy. I feel everything. What can we do? Can we put like a new suspension on it?

Agree with Jesse on the Fondo etiquette. It's not billed as a race nor are the ride volunteers prepared for "racers" blasting through town/intersections/turns/etc. at 30 mph race pace for not-a-race. These are fun rides. What's next, racing in local centuries, blasting through rest stops, blowing slower riders off the road, etc.?
Why is the whole thing timed then? And why are there 'world champs' then? If the only place you're supposed to attack is the big hill then that's the part which should be timed.
On the broken pedal, I don't think that I would have switched pedal systems the day before the next event, however, I would have readily moved from a Look Assiomo to a standard Look pedal.
I did precisely that the day before the Alberto Contador Fondo in Spain a month ago. Still on the standard Look too.

TOTALLY my issue with new bikes - fewer and fewer adjustments! And it becomes so expensive if you need to make changes. And not to mention the faff of travelling with a fully integrated set up in a bike bag / box! 😏

I reckon the SL7, Propel and the like get integrated right. Cables through the bars, but under the stem and with split spacers. You can swap stems pretty easily as long as you have enough slack in the hydraulic hoses, but still looks sick. Full stem/bar combos, or running the hoses through the stem like the S5 are a step too far unless you already know your fit is dialed.
Finally, somebody who gets the idea.
I once had to swap my customer's third-generation Venge's stem for a shorter one and thanks to the under-stem routing configuration, I was able to swap it in no time like a regular stem. This is the only front-end configuration I'll ever consider for road bikes with integrated internal routing. (two-piece cockpit + no internal routing in the stem)
If I was buying a S5 or Canyon etc. I'd 100% get a bike fit prior to purchasing. Fit first buy later is defo required for these sort of bikes. Tbh I wouldnt go to any bike fitter who doesn't do the fit on a Jig (like retul but not retul as that system is shite).

You can put a standard two piece handlebar and stem on bikes (including the canyon aeroad) and deal with the ugly setup for a few weeks/months until you decide what works for you and go with a one piece cockpit that fits that

If I was given a frame one size to big as a replacement, I too would probably not chose to ride purely from a safety stand point for myself and and riders around me. I'd naturally ride it as if it were the right size expecting the same reactions from the bike but because it is bigger, that reaction window narrows down which could cause a mid corner lean correction to then go off line putting other riders at risk. This topic all goes back to being in-tune with your kit to a level that its "apart" of your body and the confidence that brings with it.
In the US Trek is making big investments in the high school mountain bike scene and it seems to be working like gangbusters. They offer a 25% discount to all riders and coaches (most of the parents are coaches). Because of this you see mostly Treks at these races by a longshot and these are kids just getting started in a lifetime sport and tons of them are quickly becoming attached to the brand.
A lot of this talk seems to be because their AUS. They might be culturally western but they are economically distinctly eastern. I used to think the US was on another planet relative to EU. But AUS seems another solar system.

Considering your chat about aero bikes, few years ago there were two Merida Reactos. Bikes marked with E-series have a different carbon layup and also shorter headtube. In other aspects, regular Reacto was pretty much the same, which makes it more relaxed aero bike for regular people. Same goes with Bianchi: they have more relaxed aero bike (Aria) and more aggressive one (Oltre).

Trek has 22.5% of the market share of bikes in the U.S. second is giant at only 10.5%, specialized third at 9.5%. They are everywhere in the U.S. I live in the DC area and id say 5 out of every 10 bikes you see out are Treks, maybe even more. Most people buy what is at their local shop and Trek is in a hell of a lot of local shops here. They have decent warranties on parts so if something breaks you take it to the shop and have them deal with it rather than sending it in yourself.
Yes, I live in Alexandria, VA. There are four Trek bike shops within 45 minutes of my house. Why do most Trek bike owners choose orange/red? Yikes. Maybe they glow in the dark.
Treks fill the sort of 'person with a decent amount of disposable income but not super serious or knowledgeable about cycling' demographic, which is large but not cool. They are ugly bikes imo. The Madone is so chunky and bizarre...dunno how anyone thinks that looks cool. Treks always have this big arched back look of a curved top tube and curved seat stays that look more like what you see in fancy handmade rando bikes or old fart endurance bikes than cool race bikes.

What bugs me the most when it comes to bikefit that most bikes come with too wide bars and too long cranks for their size. Which means, buying a new bike instantly means replacing crankset and handlebar at least. When do bike manufacturers stop selling 42cm handlebars on Small or Medium bikes (52/54), I think people who ride these bikes have 38, maybe 40 cm wide shoulderbones and relatively short for a 172.5mm crankarm. No surprise that aftermarket 38-40mm handlebars are out of stock everywhere... :/

My Time Scylon doesn’t have an integrated cockpit but I look at it this way, any aero loss I have can be made up by ensuring my position/bike fit is accurate.
Picked up a MINT R5 frame for 2200 USD. Not cheap but a whopping 3300 USD less (even more if you factor in taxes) than brand new. There's not a spot on it. So happy with that. It's one of the best riding bikes I've owned and I love the integrated but accessible front end so much (cables are hidden in external groves of handlebar instead of inside). Alpitude saddle, Duraace group, Reserve 44/47 wheels, Favero Assima Duos, Elite bottle cages and stock computer mount. Total 6.84kg's.
the bike commuting thing is huge in canberra. in the mornings you'd see 200 bikes on your commute if you take the main bike paths easily.
A far more commuter friendly city … then again, that wouldn’t be hard when comparing to Sydney.
I have a chapter 2 toa XS and 400mm / 80mm integrated stem ( ordered by discussing with Mike Pryde) only mess I made is 145 saddle Prologo and swapped it for E3 Infinity seat and 160mm crank from 170mm so now I have a better fit and yes got out of Look Keo pedals to +8mm SQ labs - isint bike fit an ongoing issue with physiology changes

@@ChrisMillerCycling You don't have any option due to the way the controls are wired. A single push button on the end of each tri bar, RH button to shift up and LH button to shift down.
As a bike fitter I have 3 rather vague requirements. 1st, put the rider within range of motion. If you’re within range of motion, pedaling the bike is called exercise. If you’re outside range of motion it’s called injury. 10 years ago I would veto an aggressive tri bike once in a while because I just couldn’t get them within range of motion. These days it happens far more. 2nd part is getting the riders body weight on the pedals. If the rider can’t pedal the bike in a big gear in their riding position, with their hands behind them, nothing I can do with the handlebars is going to help. It’s a simple concept, weight goes on your feet, not your hands. Watch yourself walk - you get the idea. Part 3 is dealing with asymmetry, this is where I complain about the quality control of the human body…
the canyon being the western giant is a bit of a mindbender to me, i've heard similar undertones when merida is mentioned. like not being up there with the brands most mentioned as the best of the best. despite both brands been ridden to memorable victories in the grand tours with the queens stage of la vuelta or the many tdf sprints, both have won recent editions of paris roubaix, both have won world championships and are found in the front of almost every race. both came out with brand new "non-performance based" bikes and booked a major win and both can be and have been beaten by riders who brought a giant to the fight. okay i get there's nuance and context and all that but they're all quite up there those pro peleton bikes and yet when considering the amount of headroom the productquality dept. has built in when these bikes hit the consumer market it turns out that actually none are up there. though given the prices are certainly up there the bikes could be and should be up there. it bends my mind sideways between fascination and frustration like a noodlewheel in rim brake aeroframe

I would not buy a full set just for a grand fondo. Would buy a cheapo set of keo pedals and replace the broken pedal while keeping the one assioma still acting as a single PM. Then would check and buy a replacement body, as assioma offers it (I have done this repair, it's easy, just one Allen bolt to screw and tighten). After the repair, keep the keo cheapo set in the car boot, in case this happens again. Dual power is not the holy grail, someone is acting like a drama queen. *cough cough*

People are paying hundreds if not over a thousand dollars for hidden cables.. and the issue of integrated handlebars is really really funny because if you ride a 120 or 130.. you have to put on a regular old school bar and stem for fitting and then take a deep breath and pay for the integrated bars that are you buy it and if don't love it there is almost nobody to sell it to on the used market.. which after all bars from a person instead of the manufacturer are used even if they were never used.. when I was fitted years ago..guy had 110,120,130 w 40,42 and 44 hanging on the wall.. some had old Shimano levers . many people experimented w cams in the cranks and stem for movement but it was never strong enough..I think Look is the only one with the ability to shorten the cranks and stem
Have a look for forum posts about the Assioma to SPD conversion, there are numerous pedal bodies that will fit on the assioma spindle in both SPD and SPD-SL, just usually not Shimano pedals. I’ve been running Bontrager SPD pedals with my dual-sided Assiomas for over a year now with no isssue.

It would be nice if someone could make white bar tape that you can clean. The tacky feeling feature makes them impossible to clean. I've resorted to the pimpled track bar grips. They are scrubbable but they only cover the drops.

Similar issue as you Chris with the Garmin, a text notification came up half way through my ride accidentally saved it trying to clear the pop up message. That wasn’t a big deal, continued on and did my intervals, stopped at a bathroom and paused it, another notification came up and I thought not going to get me this time Garmin, clicked the back button in the top corner the Garmin froze and lost the part of my ride with all the intervals! I share your frustration

Sydney Crit racing seems to be dominated by a more ‘suburban’ (whiter and trending more bogan) crowd, where as the younger more diverse group you are talking about is not really welcomed by that group.
So the question is, will that younger more diverse crowd eventually make their way into the scene as the white blokes get slow and die off?

Granted it’s second year of longer bike rides and without cycling cap under which took all the sweat previously exactly for the reason I didn’t want to wash my pads. Now I just don’t care.
And omg with the bar tape Chris, just get a pair of gloves. They act a bit as a safety measure too. Eastern Europe is still cold enough in summer to wear them all summer.
I am running the second year with my supacaz sticky kush and it shows some wear around where I put my hands. Granted I ride two bikes and 6k km a year. Will only replace it if it rips.

the key thing for me with the new bikes is, you need to know exactly what you need and how your position will be beforehand. i mostly use bike insights for frames and i check drop/reach/etc of the bars beforehand and build up myself or with a shop. full bike sets sucks like hell because they come with 175 cranks and 42cm handlebars on 54s. for me full pre builds are dead. long live custom.

Sure thing. Essentially heffron is a criterium, Bowral was a grand fondo, Grafton is a 160 mile road race.
The only thing keeping Trek alive is that they are readily available in my area. They aren't the coolest looking bikes, and yet they are just as expensive as the more modern looking frames offered by other bike manufacturers. They also carry the "americano" following so there's that. Other brands (even specialized) don't have as many shops that sell their brand as much as Trek. Mechanically they aren't bad bikes, they're just, available, there and easier to shell out cash with something available vs. wait months for some model from another brand to become available.
Yeh I think that was kind of my point. The local retailers are the ones keeping the brand relevant.

I am literally going thru the nightmare of integrated bars/fit/looks myself. I cant believe is this difficult now. I'm putting together a Madone SLR project One. Couldnt get the proprietary barstem from Trek, had to find the next best thing; a Vision 5D., or so I thought. Spent a bunch of money and find out that the head spacer is in the way of the cable hole under the Vision bar.. WTF!!! I cant get the nice look and I'm potentially locked on a bike position! WTF!
