Wood Turning the World Cup Ball - Telstar 18

  • I have wood turned the Telstar 18 which is this year’s World Cup football/soccer ball. It is a segmented sphere with approximately 2013 pieces. It is made mostly of maple with a patterned section of birch, cherry, walnut, and ebony. It is 9" in diameter and 4lbs 7 oz. It is hollow. I built the segmented form with three intersecting rings; these rings are made up of 12 rectangular pieces and 6 square pieces. Eight triangular pieces fill the space between the rings to complete the sphere. The finish is walnut oil.

    I’m so glad there was minimal cnc use here! CNC seems like a specialty tool that’s hard to imitate with “normal” tools; this feels much more accessible.

    You, Sir, are an absolute genius! This is the most amazing wood creating/making/concocting project I've ever seen (not that I'm an expert on these matters).     Frank - As a woodworking Englishman having just watched us beat Sweden to get to the Semi Finals, I think I'd rather I lifted your wooden ball than the actual tournament trophy!
    Perhaps, you should send your ball to the eventual winners? Its worthy of a place in ANY trophy cabinet!

    You did a fantastic job much better than the original. I'm not a fan of the official ball. Sweet push stick too by the way, needed a longer rear stud though.

    Hey Frank, a trick I've used to "soak" pieces without needing a big ($$$) bucket of walnut oil is to put them in a plastic bag with a cup or so of the stuff, and coming by to move the piece around in the bag every so often. Sort of like marinating fish.

    Amazing! Thin pieces bouncing is one of the reasons I use the two push stick method instead of the shoe style.
