Wood Turning the World Cup Ball - Telstar 18
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2018
- I have wood turned the Telstar 18 which is this year’s World Cup football/soccer ball. It is a segmented sphere with approximately 2013 pieces. It is made mostly of maple with a patterned section of birch, cherry, walnut, and ebony. It is 9" in diameter and 4lbs 7 oz. It is hollow. I built the segmented form with three intersecting rings; these rings are made up of 12 rectangular pieces and 6 square pieces. Eight triangular pieces fill the space between the rings to complete the sphere. The finish is walnut oil.

You're crazy. This turned out so well! Awesome project.
This "turned" out so well!
good pun well spotted
Fun fact: it looks like the triangular bits at 13:15 were at the magic angle (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_angle )
I love seeing my favorite channels spontaneously interact
That "turned" out better than expected
This geometry melted my brain
oh yeah... it hurts
ahah so true mine hurts now
Not only are you the most skillfull and ambitious woodworker i've ever seen, but your video editing is also just so professionnal! Keep working just as hard, you'll end up getting the number of subscribers you really deserve!
Wow just amazing
i think it's amazing how we have 2 amazing carpenters on youtube as frank and bobby duke, yet their styles are completely different
This should be the new World Cup trophy!
Love your attention to detail-like the pushstick in the shape of a soccer shoe
I love how it's not a Nike soccer shoe...
Bielanski the ball is adidas though??
Annika it's true, but Portland also has headquarters for both companies, it would have been a cute little troll to whip up a swoosh instead, that's all...
Beautiful. That should be presented as the trophy for this years World Cup.
j mert Yeah, and luckily Germany isn't there to drop it! 😉
or the trophy for second place
It used to say that wooden medals are for 4th place. So this ball shall go to England
What a masterpiece!
Hi Martin!
Ayeeee
The man, the myth, the legend has appeared!
I showed your videos to my dad (he's a big crafter and woodworker)
He was impressed with all if it but he was shocked when you made the ebony air plug. So thank you😁🤘
Ahh, morning coffee at Frank's. The constants in every video; the marriage of creativity to technology, application of the technology to execution, problem solving along the way and every aspect of the videography. This certainly did not disappoint. Thanks for being part of my morning coffee Frank.
Impressive amounts of artistry and patience!
As Indiana Jones would say, "it belongs in a museum."
Thanks David
David, doesn’t someone then reply “YOU belong in a museum”? ;)
I loved the soccer boot with the clits that was used to push the wood. The attention to detail is amazing!
the boot with the what?
Dan Curry lmfao
Clits?😂
It's "Cleats"
@@alexcortes6377 football boots
Not the same clits 😅😂
Greatest wood worker of our generation. And we get to watch from behind his own eyes. Best time to be alive.
I'm sorry, but the best part of this was the new pushstick 😀
Yes.
Exactly.
I had to stop the video just two minutes in...to make the same comment. Not surprised someone had already made it!
Totally!!!
ya. can't believe Frank never even mentioned it in the vid. super cute!!
Another masterpiece for two universes! Woodworking and videography! Amazing work man!
This sums the man up so well!
His videography is by far the best in the UA-cam woodworking community IMO. I wonder how much more time it takes to finish a project just because of moving the cameras and setting up the shots.
Scrap wood City juju
I’m so glad there was minimal cnc use here! CNC seems like a specialty tool that’s hard to imitate with “normal” tools; this feels much more accessible.
Woooooow... Beautiful work!!! I'm italian and I think you are the "Giuseppe Maggiolini" of our days!!! Art in your hands!!!!
You never fail to impress me.
Typersx1 8
Wow! 14:47 Soooo good! Tedious process and beautiful outcome.
Thanks, I shot that coming apart then reversed it.
Clever !
That makes a lot more sense now.
This guy is from another planet. That animation is amazing
Agreed.
Hey Frank, I recently saw a video of a blacksmith who said "knifemakers don't make mistakes, they make smaller knives", what you said at some point reminded me of this.
I watch your movies for a few years now, and giving that it is my first comment to your videos, I would like to thank you for the great content you produce :)
A. The new push stick had me chuckling. B. That may be the best work you've done to date. Just... WOW!
This has got to be the best wood turning video to this day. Frank, amazing craftsmanship. Thank you for all your time and effort on this project and sharing it with the world.
✌️,
Jeremy
If there was a world cup of wood turning then Frank, you would win. That is amazing.
You have just won the carpentry World Cup! What an awesome project and an equally awesome result! Your a clever old stick my man!!
ITS COMING HOME!🏴
Hands down one of the finest woodturnings on UA-cam. Simply an outstanding job.
I would have been sick to my stomach right before the first turn. This was an insane project.
This is just insane Frank - even thinking about the complexity of the angles boggles my head! & whilst we're on the topic of the world cup I've got to say COME ON ENGLAND haha!
It’s not coming home lol
They way you can see the finished sphere at the beginning of the project and how to get from lumber to sphere is INSANE!! This was so cool!
One never feels like speeding up your videos or skipping ahead. Best 27 minutes of the day!
What a beautiful project Frank! I can't even try to imagine the amount of work you've must been putting into this! Thank you!!
So satisfying to watch, on so many levels. I don't know of anyone attempting projects like this! Well done, Frank :-)
Perhaps the best editing I’ve seen for any video on UA-cam. And it’s always nice whenever he chuckles in the voice over. Makes me chuckle too.
Your patience and 3-D thinking are amazing as usual but this is a fantastic piece by anyone's standards. Thank you for totally weaning me of any hope of becoming a turner.
Yay a new Frank Howarh video! Day is complete!
"It came out pretty nice."
Uh, yeah. I'll say.
You have the patience of a medieval scribe. Your table saw must have been running for hours cutting all those segments, but the end result was another stunning piece of work, great job.
You are a genius. No matter how complicated a project is, you explain it so well. Thanks.
I can't believe you did that. Spend so much time in such project. But then I remember that's exactly something I would love to do, and I start believing more and more!
When combining your phenomenal craftsmanship with your editing skills your videos are always a pleasure to watch. Great result
Hes most likely not editing it
This is the most impressive project I've seen on any of the wood working channels I follow
You, Sir, are an absolute genius! This is the most amazing wood creating/making/concocting project I've ever seen (not that I'm an expert on these matters). FIFA should commission you to make the ball and hand that to the winner! Imagine a series of all the World Cup balls! OMG! Yes, just, YES!!!!
Really kick'n it with the cleat! One of the subtle extras, I guess. Love it all.
This is beautiful.
Insane level of mastery.
Frank, you’re the best therapist ever 👍🏻!
GOAL!! Frank you really put that one in the back of the net. Fantastic job. Now for the matching World Cup trophy. Love the boot push stick, and the hilariously long socket extension. Pure entertainment. Thanks for making and sharing.
I love how, every so often, he giggles at silly little things, like calling the wood a sandwhich.
Project 100%pass
Video edit 1000%pass
Sound effection 10000%pass
Result= Amaaaazing😊👌
Your voice is like nothing I ever heard before I put on your videos before bed and fall asleep so well
This gentleman would be a awesome college woodshop teacher. Nice voice, sounds like he doesn't get mad easily. And he wood do really well.
You need a TV show. The only thing that would get me back to watching TV
Perhaps my favorite video of yours. I love the thought process.
Frank the master tailor-cut and sewed the ball from a tree! Fantastic!
14:48 This one time, with band clamps.
No, seriously, that might be the most ambitious stop motion I’ve ever seen you do. And right in the middle of one of your most ambitious woodworking projects.
This is hard to say as you have done so many masterpieces, but this one is your best! WOW!
Always a good time when Frank posts
This is why I am so thankful for the internet, to be able to see this beauty is just amazing, I loved every second of this work respect Sr - greetings from Colombia
This has got to be one of the most satysfying videos i saw in a long long time!!! I can't remember when i've used 27 minutes on something i just stumpled upon before!!! Unbelievably Great work!!! Nothing beats real Craftmanship!!!!
Another incredible achievement, Frank. Outstanding 🙂
Truly astonishing! Been REALLY looking forward to seeing this one, having been following avidly on Instagram. Just incredible, Frank. Thanks so much for sharing this :)
You my friend, have been fun to watch! From one who tinkers in the workshop in my free time, but earns a living on the soccer field, this is legendary. Awesome to see woodworking and soccer like this. Love this Frank! And your workshop!
People who dislike your work, don't understand the hard work and passion... By the way great work..! 👌👌👍😜
Frank - As a woodworking Englishman having just watched us beat Sweden to get to the Semi Finals, I think I'd rather I lifted your wooden ball than the actual tournament trophy!
Perhaps, you should send your ball to the eventual winners? Its worthy of a place in ANY trophy cabinet!
They should buy it, with a lot of money!
They don't deserve this
you are master frank great work
Wow Frank! phenomenal craftsmanship as always :) A 2 Minute version of the video would make it in worldwide trends immediately
This is such an amazing piece should probably be put in the fifa museum😀
This video is so underrated!!
makes an excellent wood soccer ball that looks absolutely incredible
frank: "it came out pretty nice"
By far, this seemed like the most complicated piece you've done. Wow man. Great job.
Just amazing. I will not be able to watch the rest of the World Cup without thinking about this project.
You did a fantastic job much better than the original. I'm not a fan of the official ball. Sweet push stick too by the way, needed a longer rear stud though.
Just watching England beat Sweden when this popped up! How timely, thanks
Ha Ha me too, don;t like football, but what a game.
me too... but was to drunk to watch it last night ;)
I wish true artisans like this lived forever.
Great project Frank, looks amazing. Watched this with my 9 year old autistic son, thanks for bringing us together for 27mins with your amazing skill, video editing and family friendly content. He's hooked on your vids and is fixated on the Death Star, he wants me to make him one. Best wishes.
wow super creative! I love it!
This is like something my dad would watch.
Frank you’re seriously a master of your craft. Amazing work as always man.
No way would I ever have that much patience, nice job Frank!
Amazing!
Frank...this is amazing! I would have been nervous after all of that work to put it on the lathe and turn it too!
One of your best. If this doesn't get a million views I'm suing. I dunno who, but I feel like it's criminal.
You are an inspiration and a pleasure to watch. 27 minutes of smiling over here.
I have never watched a video like this before and don’t even know how I came across it but I really enjoyed it. The amount of craftsmanship and skill is unbelievable! Well done Sir.
i can’t imagine what happened if that ball touched neymar
HAHAHHAHAAHA
LOL
Neymar will flop!
He would get LIGMA
Gjini05 - FIFA Mobile Content Not funny
Excellent.
not sure why anybody would dislike this video... Great video and beautiful work! So much effort - that's unbelievable!
this is the craziest wood-turning video I've ever seen. what a guy.
The thought and precision of the piece is something to marvel at. Someday I hope to be as clever.
Reminds me of Clickspring. Who's that? Dedicated craftsmen. (Made his own files)
Hey Frank, a trick I've used to "soak" pieces without needing a big ($$$) bucket of walnut oil is to put them in a plastic bag with a cup or so of the stuff, and coming by to move the piece around in the bag every so often. Sort of like marinating fish.
Unbelievable attention to detail, every project tops the last.. Awesome Frank.
I couldn't care less about an object than this years soccer ball, but what you made is a piece of art art and highlights your craftmanship. Chapeau!
dummy block is my nickname...
I thought your death star was cool but this is a whole new level of cool, Frank your cooler than a heap of polar bears
the production is freaking amazing!!! this is what youtube is about
Jesus the effort that when into this including the 3D cgi and the stop motion. I saw you smiling while making it. I wish my grandfather did stuff like this you earned my sub
Amazing! Thin pieces bouncing is one of the reasons I use the two push stick method instead of the shoe style.
That football shoe though
Alver Brennersted boot***
I love your creativity Frank your wood turning videos are therapeutic in a way
Wow! The workmanship and the quality of video, as well as the editing is Over the Top!
U disurve much more subs!❤️
asa leading wodworker , can you tell me why you cut the small part inside and bigger outside... i hear many different stories about it, good and bad . and are you left handed or is this more easy to cut things?. thank you, best regards.
This project was awesome. It makes me question why on earth they've taken woodshop out of public schools. What an awesome craft woodworking is. I tip my hat to you sir for your awesome talent.
Your woodwork and videography are awe-inspiring. I also enjoy your humor. Top notch.
