- The pattern in this segmented wood turned bell is an abstraction of snow falling on hills. The snow and hills are made from birch wood and the sky is purple heart. I have wanted to use the new CNC machine to make segments for segmented woodturning. In this bell, I used the CNC to make the wavy hills in the design. The construction of the bell is 6 segments cut with a compound miter between each segment. This forms a six sided cone that can be shaped into a bell on the lathe. I made the snow in the design by drilling holes in the segments and gluing dowels in those holes.

It is always so hard to comment on your videos. You do such a great job on the video, the woodworking, stop motion, alien death ray, etc. I guess the thing I like most is how you share your thought process. I learn something every time. Great project.

Old timey machinists will tell you that for your hold downs you will get increased holding strength by keeping the heel of your strap at some level higher than your toe. I try to go as close to parallel as possible, with the heel being only slightly above the toe.

I totally agree with your comment, "it came out really nice". You put a lot of work into that, but it really was worth it.
I also happen to be very impressed that you managed to turn the two different colored woods together without the purpleheart bleeding into the birch.

Lovely object and great video. The narration and images are really captivating so I lost track of time.
There's something I LOVE about imperfect objects coming from master craftsmen. I can't really explain why. I feel like the bell has so much more personality by not lining up the wavy pattern on the 6 segments. It almost tells a story just by existing: "Look, this is how I was made."
