Wood Turned Snowflake Sphere Christmas Ornament

  • This year's Christmas ornament project is a walnut and maple sphere with a snowflake pattern at the top and the bottom. The pattern runs through the volume of the sphere. I made the pattern by repeatedly cutting and gluing pieces of walnut and maple to make a snowflake. I then generated two segmented halves to this sphere which I hollowed out. Next, I glued the two halves together and turned the resulting cylinder into a sphere. I really like how the straight lines of this segmented snowflake wrapped themselves around the curve of the sphere and make a new pattern.

Don't feel bad Pete. I'm lost too on this. As Frank would cut, glue and repeat, I can see how any pattern would evolve. But, to know that ahead of time baffles me. He just works at a different level than me for sure.

Frank I really enjoy watching you make your $1000 Christmas ornaments lol. On a serious note your kids don't realize it now, but when they are older and get to look back at these videos and see their mom, dad and themselves from each Christmas, it will be truly priceless for them, as will be the box full of ornaments that you made. Merry Christmas to you and yours!!

For finishing the sphere, I like to drill three screws through a piece of plywood in a triangle pattern, flip it over so the pointy ends are up, and set the piece on them. You do end up with three little points to touch up when it dries, but when finishing something lightweight (box, sphere, pine derby racer, etc) it's the best way I've found.
Just be sure not to lay the "holding jig" on the floor pointy ends up and accidentally step on it! ;-D

    Hi Frank,
I build a globe box as a carpenters exam project. The trick is to glue the sphere together with newspaper in between. Then when you're done turning you can break the newspaper. Off course it has it's risks.

  • @grupp61
    @grupp61 5 років тому

    Bravo Frank..
As a fellow engineer, inventor , and woodworker your visualization regarding the orientation of the individual chords transitioning into segments, and ultimately producing a pattern dependant ,symmetrical sphereoid is both impressive and mentally soothing .
Midway through the video I started to visualize a box design!!!
Possibly a center ring either solid or chords.
    Mechanical design mechanism potential.
Incorporate spring loaded plungers that will provide axially clearance, and then mini zero protrusion hinges , possibly a scaled down version of Blum 155 Zero protrusion hinge.
Design in a small rare earth magnet for the catch, or build a leaf spring into the hinge ( aka soft close).
This design would allow the 2 halves to close seamlessly, and then pop up, and then swing away for the hinge mechanism.
Might need to work a weight into a large counterbore in what would be the bottom section...
It's difficult to explain seeing the invisible to folks whom dont have the opportunity to explore that realm. However very rewarding when you can get a young engineer away from Solid Works, and think through a design as if they are machining it from solid material.
Peace and Joy to you and yours..

For future reference, if you want to see how a flat pattern will look on a sphere, it's fairly easy to do in sketchup. Just draw a sphere, draw the pattern on a plane where the center matches the sphere's center, extrude the patter into and past the sphere, intersect faces with selection, then delete everything outside of the sphere; this will draw the projection of the pattern onto the sphere, and you'll know what it looks like beforehand.

One way to turn the box would be to make a sphere out of some scrap wood and glue the two halves on it just enough to be securely held in as you cut the outside. Removing would work kinda like when you split an avocado in half, twisting the two halves.
