I remember having a conversation with one of my players about how Captain Jack Sparrow exemplified the Chaotic Neutral alignment. She described the alignment as: might save the world, might steal your car. I amended it to: might steal your car in order to save the world, might save the world in order to steal your car.

Give a Jack a bottle of rum, and he'll be drunk for a day. Give a Jack a magical compass that always points to what he wants most, and he'll potentially be drunk for the rest of his life, unless he trades it for said bottle from earlier

@@geoshark12 I actually thing the 5th one isn't that bad. The issue with the 4th one is they decided to make Jack the main character. And as much as a beloved character he is, as much as he makes a difference to the quality of the movies, he is NOT main character material! Will and, in the later movies Elizabeth, are much better main characters. In movie 4 Jack is main character and that doesn't work. And in movie 5, sadly they don't have access to Will and Elizabeth, but the new characters make for reasonable replacements. They make it work for that last movie.

It’s a shame that Jack’s long-running wish to become Immortal through any means necessary was never given a proper send-off.
The Aztec Gold could have been a way to it, but he gave that up to beat Barbossa.
Becoming captain of the Flying Dutchman was another way to it, but he gave that up to save Will.
Searching for the Fountain of Youth was another way but he gave that up because the plot demanded it.
The last movie had almost nothing to do with his little quest.
Might have been pretty cool to see a time skipped Jack Sparrow where he finally became an immortal pirate instead of the guy everyone jokes about.

Jack Sparrow always felt like a selfish prick who's willing to do almost anything in service of himself and himself only. But that he was never out right evil and thus was never willing to do anything that meant killing unnecessarily if he could avoid it. Among doing anything that would be considered to cold hearted and the like. Having just enough of a conscious to do the right thing if it 1 benefitted him and 2 wouldn't weigh down on whatever humanity he has left. Definitely a chaotic neutral character.

There was an extended scene for when Jack and Elizibeth were marooned together in the first film where he angrily shouts his whole plan to her which was hilariously enough to help everyone get what they wanted minus the bad guys and that her dear sweet stupid boyfriend screwed the whole thing up marvelously. Most of the extended material that describes what the writers wanted to go for with Jack is that he's a way better person than he wants people to believe, including himself. Heck his first action to become a pirate in his original backstory before the clumsy sequels was legit freeing a ton of slaves because he couldn't stomach how they were being treated and didn't want to let them die below decks. Jack in my mind has always been Chaotic Good to Chaotic Neutral with a serious case of imposter syndrome when someone tries to tell him he's a good person.

I personally feel that the marker that ends on the 3rd film best describes Jack Sparrow. Jack is a man that will lie, cheat, and steal to pursue his goals, but is not actively seeking to hurt anyone. Additionally, when placed into a situation that tests his character, Jack will usually the more morally good action (like saving Will's life at the cost of the chance for immortality). Thus, him being between a neutral, chaotic neutral, and true neutral positioning if feel is an accurate result.

Something I notice in these videos is that a lot of the time Chaotic isn't treated as it's own alignment. It seems like it's used to say an act is "bad, even if not evil", which isn't how the alignment works. Chaotic acts are ones which encourage the breakdown of rules and standards, or which oppose authority. Chaotic isn't just a seasoning for the other alignments, it is actually it's own thing.

Frankly since nothing it brings up is touched on again, I choose to believe that Pirates 4 was (mostly) a story Jack is telling Will and Elizbeth's kid to explain why he missed his birthday ;)

I like the 5th movie. I'm saying it now. I like Henry trying to save his father despit only having met him like twice to three times from the curse. I like seeing more of Jack's backstory and seeing that he's more-or-less always been the troll of the seas. I like the happy ending for the turner family with Will being freed from his curse and living with his family in peace. I like Salazar as a villan, he's badass and unapologetically evil and he knows and revels in his villainy because he does it to pirates. The gimmick of his ship and crew are awesome too. I like the 5th movie

I disagree heavily with the scene on the island. I thought it was pretty funny, and Jack did try his best to help Will

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 2 роки тому +6

I agree. It's not like Jack just waits for Will to save him, he immediately takes advantage of Will's escape to try and make his escape. Besides, what loss of agency? Jack must've convinced the native people on the island that he was their god in order to a) save himself and b) delay the natives from eating his men. That's plenty of agency. Jack just didn't realize the natives eat their gods in their rituals to free their spirit.

Jack Sparrow is your classic example of a chaotic neutral alignment, hands down. He is definitely not good, chaotic or neutral. He is self-serving and does what ever the flip he pleases, without regard for morality or law. More often than not, when he does a good deed, it usually serves his own interests.

Jack is flatly C/N with good tendencies. Since I'm unsure if the Greeco/Roman has a dedicated jester God I think being as tweeked as Jack is they'd demi God him under Bahccus and he'd drop straight onto Olympus when he croaked (and the kraken didn't eat him.)

12:31 I don't think the Jack and Elizabeth "flirting scene" is out of place, because it foreshadowes the end of the movie: Jack tries to give into his selfish instincts but then decides to come back because he really cares and would love to be the Hero; Elizabeth in the end does the selfish thing by chaining Jack to the Pearl to save the Crew, and I am 99% sure Jack's remark means that he remembered that moment.
