I would love to see what Rebecca would do if she was going to down size. I would challenge you Rebecca to show us how you would deal with all your beautiful favourite things that you currently have and how you would decorate when you downsize into a 750 square foot condo. I can’t wait for that video.
you are absolutely right. nowadays taste has been sacrificed by wealth. size and quality has been reduced enormously. But, some of her ideas can be partially applied even to small places. Actually, I believe small places need more symmetry. Otherwise, they quickly look chaotic.
It never ceases to amaze me people’s decorating choices, picture arrangements is indeed a prime example, to high, to much, etc. Rebecca , you have a very gracious way of telling people what is wrong and suggesting improvements. Love watching you, always such good ideas and advice.
Rebecca! I haven't watched past the opening and already as an Interior Designer I am saying 'THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!' for setting the record straight on how to hang art! It is one of my pet peeves and I believe the wrong hanging of art can literally ruin a room. Now, I will watch and applaud your sharing the basics of hanging art well. THANK YOU!
Awesome response my friend. Love hearing from other interior designers 🙌🏻 Best to you in your endeavors to help people make their home’s beautiful 👍🏻 RR
@@MmeDesgranges Yes, literally. So many people think that there is a number: 61 inches off the floor,. 59 inches off the floor.... etc. Art needs to be hung in relation to what is below it and beside it, plus hanging a tiny piece of art over a big sofa is also wrong. Yes, literally... hanging art correctly and having the right size of art can make all the difference in a room looking far better.
I need to take pictures of my rooms and look at them, pretending Rebecca is looking at them, too. The guidance you provide in the Top 10 mistakes series helps me learn to recognize the patterns for success in decorating. Thanks. Love your sass style and sense of fun.
As a fellow professional interior designer, I must agree with all your suggestions about properly using wall space for art, mirrors, and woven tapestries. I find that a lot of people consider what to hang on the wall as a minor detail, almost as an afterthought, when actually it is one of the key elements in a room. You explained the concepts very well, and I enjoyed this video!

This was Great Rebecca, I took your advice in one of your last videos where you said the room had too much fabric in it and that was kind of my tv room, I switched out the coffee table to a timber top one I had in another room and it made all the difference, who would of thought something so simple would make such an impact on the look of the room, I’m so happy with how it turned out. Hey Rebecca. Thank you for the series of home deign mistakes. I'm finally moving to my new home and I'm going to use all your info when decorating my home. I think what some of these people are listening to are some designers on youtube that tell you to move that picture over a bit. Nope, listen to Rebecca. Symmetry is the ONLY right way, OR it just looks off or lonely.
Rebeca, loves symmetry but that's not the only way. You can also try an asymmetrical composition as long as you can achieve the same visual weight on both sides. Symmetrical arrangements are easier because you just mirror the same objects.
Awwwwww Donna, your comment makes me very happy. To answer your question… there is a way to get direct feedback as a member of The Design Sessions. I think many of us have been misled by furniture catalogs and decorating magazines that a bit of asymmetry translates into “fresh,” “modern” or “edgy.” The problem is that those photos are highly stylized, taken from specific angles, and don’t translate well into homes we live in. When real homes are professionally photographed for editorial purposes, the decor is often shifted about from how it’s actually set up, just to get an interesting or pleasing image. Many of us unsuccessfully try to replicate these looks, forgetting that unlike a photo, our homes are experienced in 3 dimensions!
Hi Rebecca. Love the art at 26:20. Do you have the name of it or the artist? I love that it is not too busy but has a calming quality to it. have been trying to find something similar here in Australia but have not had any luck as yet.
Agree with almost everything you said! I’ll add a few more. I abhor TVs anywhere near beautiful fireplaces. Fireplaces should be the focal points of their walls. Glass over framed pieces should be non-reflective so they can be seen from every angle without much loss. Conservation/museum glass is expensive, but worth it for important pieces. Paintings and prints should always draw the eye to the center of the wall. For example, a portrait looking to the right should be hung to the left of center. Also, because hanging nails must always go into solid wood studs, usually the stud doesn’t align with where you want the piece to hang. There are at least 4 ways to fix it. 1. Nail a 16” block of wood to adjacent studs (assuming the studs are 16” on center). Then you can nail anywhere along the length to be centered where you want it. 2. Nail nails in the two adjacent studs, and double up the hanging wire on the back of the piece. Hang one wire length on one nail, and the other on the other nail. That way, you can slide your piece to the left or right, and always be level. 3. Less secure, use molly anchors in the wall, exactly where you want the center of the piece to be. 4. Install ceiling/wall trim and a sliding track. Then hang wires down to your piece.
Hello Rebecca, I am new on your chanel. But boy I have to say I am already looking differently to all of our rooms and the placement of art, lamps and window treatments. I also have made some changes because of youre tips and tricks and you can see the difference. Sorry I didn’t make any before and after pictures, but next time I will. In the past I new that there was something wrong but didn’t know what, now I just look at you’re video’s and know what is wrong and I change things. Thank you sooo much 👋
It can be learned! The best thing I ever did - beside subscribing to the Design Sessions, which was Step One - was start buying or borrowing from the library design books by a single decorator. Reading their explanations of what they did and why, plus actually having the images in my hands where I can really take time to ask myself what I like or dislike, why their shelves look great when mine didn't, etc. taught me a lot. If you know what you like, maybe find some books where your style is shown at its highest and best.
Sometimes people move into a home and place art/photos on walls to temporarily hide hooks from the last owners. I’m guilty of this. Problem is it becomes permanent as we become blind to it. We’re about to paint our hallway so I took off those ‘temporary’ frames (12 years) and realised I would have been better off with little holes in the wall rather than odd looking gallery wall. Once painted, I’ll be taking your advice and be very discerning about what pieces and where I hang them. Thanks.
Hi Rebecca am one of your avid fan here in Dubai i love all your videos it develop my skills and enhance my interest to keep on watching your videos. Keep going Rebecca! Regards. Marlou
9/14 Great videos always, Rebecca! I watch all of your videos, but I missed the one about that black band on your left hand 😊 Have a great fallish weekend ❤️
Could you do a video on how to display collections so they don’t look like clutter? I love collecting large crystals but I don’t know to to display them in a way that looks nice, so they end up being spread all over the house.
I would say display the crystals at varying heights, so place them on risers to add visual interest. You might incorporate other objects with the collection to add into the display, such as a vase of simple greenery, a beautiful bowl, a stack of books. If your collection is so large that it spreads to other areas of the house, you might switch out pieces and just not display everything all at once. Or get a special bookcase or hutch just to house this collection. Sorry if I am overstepping, just a few thoughts. I hope Rebecca will give the real designer answer. 😉
My question is this, when you have several art pieces, mirrors etc on different walks, how do you hang them so it looks good. Do you place them at the same level or is it ok to stagger them which may leave the distance from the ceiling to the top of the piece different?
Yes too much stuff. After your video, I took a lot of small things out of room. Stored stuffed! Feels so much better. Thank you!!

That way, you can slide your piece to the left or right, and always be level. 3. Less secure, use molly anchors in the wall, exactly where you want the center of the piece to be. 4. Install ceiling/wall trim and a sliding track. Then hang wires down to your piece.
So helpful. Thank you.
Great suggestions I will take and will really try to follow and also lessen my stuff
Thank you sooo much 👋
YOU ARE SOOOOO GOOD,THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO.
Thanks for the sticky tac tip. I need that too!
I thought Donna's wall of photos, might look better if it was all white frames...
Thank you as I am planning to do a similar wall in my house. 😊
Another great video! Thank you so very much!
Wish I had an eye for design. Know what I like but don’t know how to apply it to make it look great. Your tips and explanations are so helpful.
Such a classy interiors
Love the series thank you so much!
Thanks.

Hi Elena, how's your day going with you?
Thanks for the thumbs up, how are you spending your spare time?
looking amazing
Wonderful video thank you so much :)
My question is this, when you have several art pieces, mirrors etc on different walks, how do you hang them so it looks good. Do you place them at the same level or is it ok to stagger them which may leave the distance from the ceiling to the top of the piece different?
