To all the commenters saying that $1000 is not a budget PC, parts are getting more expensive and editing 4K video takes slightly more expensive parts. Get used to it. If you had the money to buy a 4K camera then you should have done the research(which is what this video is trying to give people) on what kind of PC you need to edit in that resolution. If you cant afford a PC like this then do more research into what you can get away with, with worse performance, for editing in 4K. This video is to show good performance without spending even more money. If they had left the RTX 2060 in the config it would have been even more. And yes $1000 is pretty low budget for 4K editing like some other(intelligent) commenters have pointed out.

I can't believe people were expecting a PC with an FX Series Chip and an RX290 to process 4k video. Like, if you're processing 4k, you need a halfway decent rig. Like, that's just how it is.

And of a general 3D (game art, short film content) and 2D (design, illustration) artist. Or... well, this machine already fits... I'd prolly add 16GB more RAM, maybe jump to 3700x (more cores/threads for Blender Cycles), and maybe go for a 2060 or 1660, as we use quite many apps GPU accelerated, and.... well, faster, as then the GPU render is faster... more memory, as so u can fit larger and more complex scenes in Blender Cycles instead of assuming to render those scenes in CPU. Like apps for real time 3D painting FX and stuff, or digital painting apps that mimic traditional media heavily using the GPU... the size of the canvas is often limited by the GPU. While other painting tools need the fastest CPU they can find... in image editing, u have Photoshop that benefit mostly from the single core maximum clock and other like Afinity Photo that besides benefiting from high clock, do much of a better use of many cores. It should be a decision totally depending on your software. The problem comes when the freelancer profile is very varied. Then , the machine's gotta be really balanced ,an all-rounder champion, even if needing to asume some compromises.
For CAD, doing so much wireframe stuff on the viewport, I'd get a Quadro or the like.... And while I've done little CAD stuff, I'm pretty sure the fastest possible CPU is gonna help quite, plus quite some RAM. Specially if handling dense wireframe meshes or even some occasional 3D scan. A CPU and monitor supporting quite a high resolution would be a must, as you'd better work like that. And so, the screen should be of a decent size, never smaller than a 22"...

I would love to see an up to date budget audio production build. I know there a lot of producers and engineers looking to be able to use as many plugins as their heart desires but then the cpu gets bogged down and have to start choosing to do something else or have to render audio a million times before getting to the final product. Which also makes edits a bit of a nightmare because if you decide you want to go back and change the settings on a plugin you've previously used you can't because you've already rendered the audio. This is not even thinking about if you want to change your midi sequence your starting from square one.

Even though it would cost a little bit more, I'd recommend going just a little more with 32GB of RAM, 16GB should be your absolute MINIMUM. Many programs, especially adobe, store all their cache on the RAM, and therefore it's a lot faster to playback videos with more RAM. The more space you have to store RAM playback the less time you have to worry about it rendering again.

@@mokubakaiba1751 For that is more about the skills... At least starting from a decent setup. It depends on what you need to do. If are editing 8k, and need to do a lot of FX, you will need a higher machine. But must be the gigs and requirements what impose the system. And Apple does this overpricing which is particularly nasty when you are needing a machine more in the extreme side of performance (and video, together with game art - I've done both- is among the fields needing more powerful hardware). If a regular Apple machine (that said, mac minis ain't that expensive and have some punch, they're stupidly underrated even by mac users, but that's another conversation) for the average Jane/Joe browsing and doing their office work is already too expensive compared to a PC, in the case of professional tools the difference goes to the roof. I'd say indeed to me makes _today_ more sense even than ever that pros go the PC route for this very reason. A PC well configured in the hands of an at least very slightly computer savvy (with this I mean just a person with common sense and almost zero nerdy skills with hardware) person is just as efficient if not more than a mac. A cross fade is done just the same with both brands, u only need to configure well your machine. If your editing tool does more GPU rendering, well, then put the accent in GPU, if is more CPU, then there u have it, (and ryzen is killing it with their new gen in terms of IPC and number of cores in price/performance!) and also put more ram and both fast and large storage solutions (with this I only mean a well priced, affordable small SSD and a regular cheapo seagate barracuda 7200 rpm of the TBs u'd need).
In this field is way more expensive to go Apple because as you go needing more advanced hardware the price increases almost exponentially. I've been editing video since the 90s, and we made crazy complex stuff there with very low end, arcane PC solutions. Today any even low end office crap would beat those at the times. So... Yeah, for any one mounting such a system, you don't need a mac at all, but mount each piece of hardware with enough thought and evolve the machine as your gigs might require.
Final Cut is not "better" than Davinci Resolve (and its Fusion of an After Effects-like solution is rather useful) or Premiere. Meaning, most projects, specially in youtube channels (is not really complex editing, not even in the best folks around in it... it's still basic editing! I love how people wow some basic stuff... but that's nice) which is what has made this growing passion about video editing quite larger than it was ever before for the masses. This is good! Really good. I noticed it some years ago. Suddenly, sth I'd only have as part of my job at companies was... "trendy". I truly love that. I hope is not just some sort of fashion and people keeps seeing the value in video editing (and the effort/skills it takes!!). A lot of the friends who started back in the 80s / 90s, mounting their studio (I did not go mega pro video editing-ONLY like most of them, I swapped between fields) they did use PCs, majorly, as they'd have to concentrate all budget in specialized devices and hardware besides the PC. Cameras at professional level were super expensive. In the beginning u had to purchase mixing tables (u kno, that thingy with tons of rotating disks in it! lol... the times.... we were working with that and cathodic tubes screens (arcane TVs, actually), pretty damaging eyesight and all... ). U could do GREAT stuff with all that crap. So, yeah, don't go for a Mac Pro just 'cause some people STILL insist in that it's "the way" (many of those don't have a freaking clue). There's not a single way anymore (since decades, actually).

    • @TTks124
      @TTks124 5 років тому +1

@@mariodrv it's a subjective matter, and it also behaves differently. Intel usually gains are consistent with RAM speed and i would say substancial, but it doesn't rely that heavily on timings.
AMD ryzen first and second gen gains are crazy, but 3200-3400 with tight timings, and super tight subtimings it's pretty much the limit.
Ryzen 3000, it depends on the CPU, because the amount of cache on them changes the gains from the RAM. However it doesn't really care so much anymore about timings and it tops out at 3600-3800. A 3900x will barely get any benefit. A 3600/x will boost similar with Intel's.

Something to note: it may be more worth it to look into ryzen's side of things, as they usually are cheaper, and from what I have seen can run better in some cases as opposed to its Intel counterpart.
Honestly, building for what you are asking about, just treat it like you want to build a decent budget gaming computer. It doesn't look a whole lot different.

I edit 4k and UHD 1080 with no problems using Davinci Resolve 18, sometimes Kdenlive/Open Shot depends on what I am doing. Also, Gimp, and other GNU/LINUX software when needed. I switch between Deepin 20.5 and Linux Mint 20.2, Zorin Os. They're All installed on same computer on different drives. 1 m.2 500 Gig, 1 Samsung 500 Gig SSD, 5 Hard drives, 2- 3 TB, 3- 1 TB. and 40-inch/30-inch 4K TV screens. 2 screen editor set-up. This is a fun set-up. I use on the road in my Class C and 30' camper. Oh yeah, Along with the T-Mobile Hotspot. Great video, thanks Linus

Can you make the same kinda video for Music Production too??? We also have a lot of samples and projects that we have to save and a back up drive about that too will be great. Music Producer depends mostly on Single core performance but it's becoming multithreaded. Samples and projects do take up space and losing that is also risky. It also requires a lot of ram to open up many plugins in the project.
It's a request can you make a video that shows a build for Music producers on a budget like this. It would be really helpful and informative.

In my experience, the trick to a great music production machine is FAST I/O, plenty cores/treads, and FAST memory and storage. Graphics card really doesn't help much with music production because there's hardly any visual rendering going on unless your DAW has a video viewer so you can sync the music to visuals. Even then, just make sure you have designated graphics. This same build that Linus did here is a great starting point, you just don't need quite as much memory since music files don't take up nearly as much space as video.

"Never watch without perspective" - comments by now.
Honestly? Even I have to say 1.000 for a 4k video editing work station is not too bad. If you do this as a living, you have to consider it as a tool or appliance. The camera will have been much more, typically.
Hell specific single shoots can exceed that budget, depending on type of expenses.
This nowadays has to count as budget.
I don't like it much either, but the age of 500€ PCs are over. Sure it is still possible. But not realistic, enjoyable, feasible. Neither for an editing rig nor for a gaming station, if you consider it a heavy hobby.
1.000 Bucks for a Build today is kind of the sweet spot for value as in price/performance actually. Though it is debatable, if peripherals should be in or outside that budget, imo.

I have a two-monitor screen system running an i7 processor quad core, and 32gb ram, oh and you will need £400.00 per year to pay for the Adobe package that includes Premiere Pro editing software, although you can get Davinci resolve at a one of price between £200/£300, so you now really need £2000.00 for editing. in realistic terms. also extra if you buy external storage drives, and you may need to upgrade your PC's power supply from 400 watts to at least 750 watts to run the extra wattage your new graphics card is going to use.

So much tech in one video. You dont want to be watching this if all you want is to understand what kinda machine to use for editing as a workstation. hahah. But if you know a little about tech this is an incredibly detailed and awesome video

maybe a little help from one of you computer savy guys.
i dont edit in 4k but at times i do edit very involved videos with alot of graphics, txt, charts, animations, ect and its very hard on my cpu as it maxes out and my new graphics card doesn't seem to help much.
i have a stock dell I5 8400 with 12gb of ram for reference. only gets about 12 mins in with a very stacked timeline and then it starts crashing the software. i need 30+ mins of a very stacked up timeline.
would this guys build work for my need even though im not doing 4K? just 1080 60fps
    any advice is appreciated!

Have you watched the task manager to see what's going on while you're editing? If the program is crashing after a while your system could be running out of memory. In that case more RAM might do the trick :)

probably ram limitations, the i5 8400 isnt great anymore either.

Good video, I thought one would need more money to edit 4K videos
idea: a workstation for scientific application on a budget.

*These are 80% My Specs. I have an RTX 2060 though, but he said it was more powerful that what they used in the video and also didn't get used up too much like the 1650 would do! I have AMD Ryzen 5 3600, the same one. 16 GB DDR4 RAM (same as video) BUT Corsair Vengeance LPX. Talking of Motherboard, I have ASUS TUF B450-M (same as video) Pro Gaming Motherboard. Power Supply Is Corsair VS550w , which is enough to run an RTX 2060*

I think for a WORK computer $1000 is reasonable, for a hobbiest then yes it may be a little high
I'd stick with the ryzen 3600 and look at going 2nd hand on gpu and upgrade it later if you feel you need it
