One thing linus didn't mention in particular is the hard drive itself. He obviously used a WD green, which, if you didn't know, lowers power consumption by slowing down the mechanical parts and read/write speeds. Most hard drives will range from 5400-7200rpm, some going to around 10000 if you are willing to spend some extra dollars on a little more speed, but the WD Green series are notorious for having only the 5400rpm option, with WD Blue having both a 5400 and 7200 option, but quite faster reads and writes. As for what might make this pc even slower, I believe that you can get PCIe 1x to 16x risers, which would make each individual throughput from the 1x slot 16 times slower, though whether that would just make the gpu completely useless in of itself i don't truly know, it was just a thought that came to my mind when i saw that 1x slot.

I think if you wanna get into gaming, for such low budgets the definite best option in value for money is a console, specifically the Xbox Series S or the PS4 Pro, for under 300 you can get either of those, in fact, you can find the PS4 Pro for $200 or less, I myself once found one for $150
The best way to build a budget rig isn't to limit yourself to a price point like $300, but to figure a way to do it bit by bit over time. A $1000 rig purchased all at once is expensive, but spread over 2 years is $40/month. Figure out what you actually want to play, the min specs for that, and make that your goal. Then figure out what the min specs to play just about anything and start there. What I'm getting at is that, just about every component you buy can be bought and sold for relatively little loss on the second hand market. So maybe ultimately you want to play Diablo on max settings, but don't have the money for that. But as long as your motherboard has a lot of options, you can make a lopsided rig and upgrade as you go. For instance, let's say you drop $150 for a good used motherboard. You can put a Pentium CPU for $25 used, $25 for a stick of used 4 gb ram, and basically be good to go. Can you play the latest titles? Hell no. But you can play thousands of amazing retro games with an emulator. That won't keep you entertained forever obviously, but after a month or two you can upgrade to a lastgen graphics card for super cheap. A 1050 ti can easily be had for $50-70. Now you probably meet the minimum specs for a lot of modernish games. Your biggest bottleneck from here is gonna be ram and CPU. Keep upgrading bit by bit and when you have zero need for a component just sell it back. For example, you could buy another cheap 4 gb ram stick now and put it in the other slot. Once they're filled, sell them all and put it towards better ram. Or if your motherboard has multiple pci slots, you could run 2 cheap graphics cards together instead of getting one newer one. In this way, you end up doubling performance while still not spending a ton of money. This definitely takes a lot more time, so you have to enjoy the process of building. It really depends on what you want to use the computer for. If you only like to play a handful of triple a games, this way isn't for you, but if you want to take your time, explore the backcatalogue, and ultimately end up with a much better rig and understanding of computers, this is the way to go.
You can only run the same model graphic cards on SLI. What's the point of buying two of the same budget graphic cards when the combined total is close to a more high end card?
I totally agree I put together my first rig 5 years ago for 180 with a fx6100 and a 750ti in it by waiting it out finding good deals and then I sold the rig and rebuilt with intel went all the way up to a i5 8400 and a gtx 1060 then I just sold that one a week ago and built my current machine of a r5 3600 and a gtx 1080
@@napoleon2564 SLI sucks, absolutely not worth it. Better to front the extra cash for an upgrade and sell the previous card to recoup some money. And anyway there's no reason to spend more than $250 on a GPU if you're using a basic 1080p 60 Hz display, and you'll be fine on half that budget even. Worst case, an iGPU can run many simple games. Also when truly on a budget, buy a whole used business PC and add an SSD/GPU. You can get an old optiplex for the price of a motherboard.

Bear Omega I agree to a point, if all you want to do is play games at high settings. That said, PCs have value beyond just performance. PCs have almost limitless capabilities. Beyond the workstation/productivity aspect, PCs also grant access to a number of popular gaming communities consoles can’t touch, such as DOTA, SC2, WoW, LoL etc. Also, XBox and PS4 require subscriptions for online play, PCs not so much. Furthermore, consider the communication options, open market of accessories, flexibility of control methods, upgradability, etc. So again, while I agree that graphics alone aren’t a good enough reason to go the budget PC route, the doors it opens are well worth the trade off, in my opinion.

Totally agree

The motherboard has basically no impact on performance
If you only like to play a handful of triple a games, this way isn't for you, but if you want to take your time, explore the backcatalogue, and ultimately end up with a much better rig and understanding of computers, this is the way to go.
wish I could bump this comment up to the top.
You can only run the same model graphic cards on SLI. What's the point of buying two of the same budget graphic cards when the combined total is close to a more high end card?
@@1yougotrickrolled603 price

@@napoleon2564 SLI sucks, absolutely not worth it. Better to front the extra cash for an upgrade and sell the previous card to recoup some money. And anyway there's no reason to spend more than $250 on a GPU if you're using a basic 1080p 60 Hz display, and you'll be fine on half that budget even. Worst case, an iGPU can run many simple games.
Also when truly on a budget, buy a whole used business PC and add an SSD/GPU. You can get an old optiplex for the price of a motherboard.

In broke people terms:
So we went broke
Integrated graphics “I’m the worst for gaming”, this graphics card “hold my beer”
Some Integrated graphics are good, i have MX330 and my friends said its really good as well as some guy on YT xD
my cpu bottlenecks its own GPU half of the time.... screw i5 4310u.....
Cities: Skylines is an exception, but only barely
Yes, I game on it.
Yes, i consider 11fps "Playable".
Yes, if my old laptop can launch it, i wont complain if it runs at 5fps.
Yes, i turn the graphics setting down, but not so far that it looks like a UA-cam video at 240p
I just realized, both the cheapest Newegg pc and slowest PC (2020) have that in common
@@Krazycrafter does you laptop have dual channel? I think it could be a little better
@@ezemaster7404 it has dual channel DDR3
I7-10700k is only $150 used and it still holds up very well it’s a 8 core 16 thread 5.1ghz turbo and level 3 cache
Linus: we get 10 FPS *proceeds to play on an 144hz monitor*
imagine all the kids that got that gt 210 when they asked their parents for a graphics card
I got a geforce 310
I got the normal 210 lol. Christmas gift in 2014/15.
I got a gt610 because it had 2gb of vram haha... it was absolutely terrible
@@avanix702 2gigs i got 512mb how bout that.
Never let your parents shop for you when it comes to tech. They’ll end up buying you a gt 210, or an i3 7th gen, or an iPhone in my case.

can't believe Linus is expecting more from YT comments than lame jokes
Floatplane bud, Floatplane.
Nice
I mean honestly it isn't even jokes its just the same exact comment copy pasted.... ffs click on ANY video and you'll see the same shit.
Still better than my PC ,dear Linus!

Linus: Is that still loading??
Me: First time?

both are first time
@@itsmitko7 ssd
Sometimes, my old pc would load in once the entire game was over
Lol it reminds me the time I was playing GTA V on a dual core 2gb ram 512gb GPU I was getting 12fps on lowest settings
Just did a double take when I realized that is the same case I used on my wife's work computer.
Glad to know I literally got the cheapest one possible!
Linus: Builds Slowest PC
Me: Looks at linus' specs,
*Starts crying*
I pressed Y for S-ame

R7-240 1gb running gta 5 on 720p with 30fps cap : -_-
@@earlninoagustin8176 a cheap dell inspiron worth like 150 bucks. It runs mc at 15 fps or slower. But I'm finally getting a decent new pc in 2 days.
Same, but I will finally get a decent pc, with 100 bucks, yea 100 bucks.
Going with an OEM (if you don't know what it is, it's basically a office pc used 10 years ago, for example dell optiplex and hp compaq) a HP Compaq wich cost 40 euros shipped, and a gtx 960 4gb 45 euro shipped. And 2x4 gb ram ddr 3.
I thought my laptop was a potato but I've discovered it actually runs pretty fairly when it's not thermal throttling 😎😎
I can’t understate the value of buying cases on the second hand market.
I found a nice mini atx case with two 120 noctuas for £15 in a charity/thrift store. Tempered glass side panel, removable front covers.
A lot of the time second hand case may come with cooling, power supplies. Go watch any scrapyard wars for proof!
