Terrible advice, dollar for dollar PC gaming machine willtotally smoke a Mac when it comes to anything above basic
editing . The only thing the Mac do extremely well on the low end, is if you use a certain type of video, it has built-in
chips that make it run and seem quicker than it is.
      Also
Anyone who works with video with under 2 GB of SSD would be ridiculously hard in the long run. You'll notice the author
is using super high-end Apple systems. He doesn't tell you how ridiculous it would be to work with a 512 drive, and 16
GB or below. Try using fusion, or color grading anything besides basic editing with this cheap Mac. With the basic Mac
you can cut and edit anything simple, however, you don't need those programs for that, you can just go with luma fusion
on a tablet. You can see it all over these 256 8 GB Mac for sale. They become useless unless you attach hard drives to
them, now you've lost all your portability, and you might as well just bought the PC in the first place.
Go ahead and look at the prices of older model PC gaming machines in a 1 100 range, and compare that to a comparable
Mac. The difference would be night and day, on anything except for basic editing. And if you're going to do basic adding
just do it off your tablet don't worry your phone you don't need a big old computer for that..
Plus they'll get a gaming machine to boot.

I had to chuckle when you mentioned staying with the system you're most used to. I recently tried a Studio Max after nothing but PCs since the 90s and I just don't like the Mac OS. My custom-built PCs have always lasted over 5 years with few or no issues. It was upgrade time and the Studio was only $1500 at Costco so I figured why not give it a try. Already got my custom PC on order. I go custom at a local shop so I know each component is quality and I can see it working before it leaves the store. Win 10 Pro.

Very clear and linear. I especially appreciated the quantitative context.
A further argument for using a laptop in a desktop environment is that you won't need a UPS. A sudden power outage can lose you an hour's hard work on your big iron. Laptops run primarily off of battery power.
When you mention Xeon processors, you should also advise that these devices incur additional overhead. They may require ECC RAM and a professional version of Windows. This can obliterate the cost savings of building your own or buying bare metal.

xeon processors shouldn't be in a conversation about video editing, because last i looked, they don't have intel quicksync capability and therefore don't support 4:2:2 10-bit h.265 decoding on the editing timeline, which is extremely important: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video

    * 500 GB SSD is not enough for video editing unless you also plan on getting external SSDs as working drives. It's barely enough for your system files.
    * 2 GB of VRAM is not enough for any budget as the lack of this resource is the most frequent cause of NVIDIA drivers crashing your session.
    * A PC priced similarly to an Apple computer will be SIGNIFICANTLY superior to Apple. I don't care how finely tuned are Apple products, the latest generation of AMD Ryzen 9 and Intel i7/i9 chips are at least twice as powerful as M2. Enjoy upgrading to 24GB of shared RAM for $400, which would buy 64GB for a PC. Enjoy paying $200 to upgrade to 512GB of SSD storage, which would buy you 2TB of top performance SSD storage for a PC. Why don't you just say that you're a Mac guy who doesn't know anything about computers and send people to another channel?

Very informative and clear, thanks. I would add one thing that I found in a few months of intensive research before buying a computer myself: the 11th, 12th, and 13th gen Intel desktop and (to a somewhat lesser extent) laptop CPU's have hardware acceleration for video editing built into their integrated GPU's. This consists of media encoders and decoders that are very effective in sorting out computer-slowing 4K footage created with later-model mirrorless cameras, recorded in h.265 & 10 bit 4.2.2. Just be sure to get Intel CPU's that do NOT have an "F" after the name--eg i9-13900F--which doesn't have the integrated graphics and media encoders. With their integrated graphics Intel has a leg up on Ryzen in this respect. Timeline performance and general editing performance is much better. And comparable (tho perhaps not quite as good) as computers with the Apple M2 CPU/GPU's. The Intel integrated graphics works well in conjunction with discrete graphics cards, which are also recommended, in order to get comparable video editing performance to the latest Apple computers.

    • @RMRealEstateProductions
      @RMRealEstateProductions 9 місяців тому

Totally! And also it depends on what editing suite you prone. Adobe is a fair bit more efficient with CUDA acceleration vs open gl from non nvidia gpus. Especially when dealing with a lot of assets in your timeline, whether psd files, after effects elements and other render heavy things. Chances are most people use a combination beyond just a video editing suite and based on that echo system, you may benefit a lot from more cpu cores, if a pc laptop making sure it's plugged in so the gpu isn't throttling due to insufficient wattage etc.

      @@Joedisney
I've been selling and servicing computers since before the internet existed in conjunction with real estate related work. What i fix the most is Macs. Not even close. I can't vouch for them in terms of reliability from my personal anecdotal experience. That doesn't make it enough of a sample size to pass judgement on industry wide averages.
That being said, there's no denying that the M1 and M2 chips are highly effective with built in encoder/decoder (media engine) for both h264, hevc and ProRes formats. It's a HUGE DEAL for anyone that has suffered through really annoying timeline scrubbing on a PC in adobe premiere. Puget systems has the most in depth benchmarks on this and it's undeniable that for the average editor it's a game changer. So much so that intel had to do the same for content creators with their latest iterations. I won't even mention how irrelevant Radeon GPUs are in adobe suite apps, the edge is staggeringly on the CUDA side (nvidia).
That being said, anyone doing more than just basic "youtubing" won't use entry level stuff anyway. A complex timeline with after effects assets becomes a nightmare on anything low end. You'd have a point there. Personally I just don't get people using a laptop for content creation unless they absolutely need the portability (or a machine that does both things). Most inevitably end up plugging external monitors, NAS, SSDs, keyboard/mouse etc.
I edit on a threadripper machine but I know plenty of other real estate photographers/videographers that work on macbook pros with external redundancy cause you just can't trust your primary storage with mission critical work and regardless of pc or mac you'd have NAS and/or cloud for your assets anyway. Onboard storage is nowhere near as important beyond just basic content creation.
I don't get why people defend one side or the other like they're paid to do so, there's a tool for every job. Some people do incredible video work on an iphone and others like MKBHD do everything on RED 8k cameras that require some really high end stuff to work with.
For my 2 cents, I game on occasion and MAC is not an option at all. For those that exclusively use Final Cut they have to use Apple products. For those that use davinci or adobe apps, either work. The M1 and M2 opened up a whole new world for those that want the synergy of interconnectivity with their other apple devices (phone or tablet). I'm an android user and rely heavily on google apps for my day to day and i'm better served by the PC side of the ledger but there's arguments for both sides and it's really a case by case thing. No statement applies to all. Pugetsystems extensive coverage and benchmarks in all major content creation programs on all silicon is pretty clear on that.

I have about 20 years on you, I have every certification and MCSE A+ Plus etc. I've also has a master's in computer science. I WAS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO WHEN THERE WAS ONLY 500 WEBSITES IN THE WORLD..
I'm just going to say it right out, if you understand what you say you do, then you would know that you can't swap files with a small drive and these Apple slow down, next to nothing OVER TIME. UNLESS YOU PUT AT LEAST 32 GB OF RAM IN THEM.
Apples for apples (pardon the pub)you cannot even come close to comparing price point from an apple to a last year model PC gaming machine (laptop). I'm not speaking about integrated graphics, I'm talking about a game machine such as the $700 3070 RTX. You'd have to spend over 3,000 to get the same speed from an apple. The only advantage of the Apple it would run at a lower power, if that was necessary.
I'm notout here to argue with Apple fan boys, fact is Apple is outrageously priced. I think they're fantastic computers, but they are extremely overpriced compared to a a gaming PC if you want to get work done for a good price.
I have a Mac mini M2, with 512 memory and 512 SSD, and I have an old laptop with a 2070 and an i 7.
When I work with fusion, the apple just bogs down, the 2070, its not the quickest but it is capable of getting the work done. . Yes if you do simple editing you can get away with the Apple no problem, but why not just buy an iPad and put DaVinci resolve on it, or use even better yet LumaFusion.
Apples just not a professional tool until you get into the 3500 on up price point. This is why you see all these Apple fanboys are spending over 3,500 on their Apple machines.
Again, I like Apple, however, it's a consumption device atanything lower than $3,500 price point.
This is why you see a bunch of low and apples for sale; you don't see the 3,500 on up Apple's for sale. They're great computers, they are just priced at a ridiculous amount of money. This is why businesses use PCs, they're not trying to get the latest and greatest they are trying to get work done and a good price point.
I promise you you will see most business out there buying Apple computers when they are at a better price point per performance than a PC.
      I'm not here to argue
, I just seen a lot of the comments of people who are trying to buy computers for their children, and I hate to see them making a mistake..
I wish you luck, I enjoy your video it's great quality.
I just hate to see people getting screwed over because of Apple's great marketing machine. FYI, one of my good friends is an Apple executive and he'll tell you the exact same thing I just wrote here.

Two major issues with new Macs: The new Macs are basically disposable units. The only thing you can upgrade is disk and USB peripherals like mice and card readers. They can only be repaired by the Apple Store, $$$$$. With the new Macs you are stuck with the CPU and RAM you initially purchased. So buy more memory. You are correct about getting 512GB of onboard SSD. It doubles the disk performance because it uses two 256GB SSDs with two disk controllers attached to the CPU. Upgrading beyond this is better with an external USB 3.2 SSD.
Your comment about system on a chip integration memory is mistaken. System integration does not reduce memory requirements. If you are running memory intensive programs like a video editor it will require similar amounts of memory on a Mac or PC. Be aware newer versions of programs always require more memory so buy as much memory as you can afford since you can't upgrade it later.

SOCs suffer from one big problem. If your RAM burns out, you have to replace the entire CPU, GPU and RAM, which is expensive. With independent modules for CPU, GPU and RAM, you only have to replace the module that went bad. SOCs were popular for a while, decades ago, but fell out of favor because of the above problem.
Overall, I enjoyed this video. Updated my overview of the processor and gpu specs.

I'm planning to buy Macbook Air M2, 512 gb ssd, 16 gb ram, 8 core gpu, and my question is this spec enough for ligth video and photo editing?
    Many thanks in advance 😊

If you go the Intel route, make sure you buy the Core CPU in a generation that supports HEVC (4k) and is also supported by the software you are editing with. (ie: Adobe Elements 2023 supports a 7th generation Intel CPU or newer). For best value, custom build PC is the best option. Best Buy sells a MacBook M2 Pro 16GB 1TB SSD for about $2700. In comparison, I built a custom Intel Core i9-13900K 64GB RAM, and several NvME SSD's and a RTX 3060ti with 2 - 28in 4k monitors for just around the same price. It's overkill for 4k editing in 2023 but does give you some future growth when cameras and applications get more hungry. I would agree though if you go laptop, go Mac.

    • @RMRealEstateProductions
      @RMRealEstateProductions 9 місяців тому +2

Also, although I work on a custom built windows pc and prefer it (because i game on occasion and it's paramount that i be able to upgrade my stuff on a semi regular basis so laptop is not viable for me and i don't edit on the go anyway) if MOBILITY is not a thing for you; you can get a lot more for your money with a Mac mini (if you prefer final cut pro for example you gotta go Mac, i prefer the adobe suite). For $1300 you get a macbook air m2 13" with 512gb , 8gb. If you don't look beyond that you miss the fact that a Mac mini with the m2 pro chip, with double the memory and more importantly the cpu has more cpu and gpu cores for faster workflow is a bit cheaper. For not much more money you can add a monitor/keyboard/mouse (which most people would add ANYWAY cause it's so dreadful to edit a complicated timeline on a 13" screen).
I wish the video covered rendering times because that is HUGE in my view. And also the variable that if you game, a gaming desktop or laptop also does great for content creation since adobe's programs are cuda optimized (assuming you go nvidia rtx vs amd equivalent which is superior for content creation), mixed with an amd cpu vs intel since it's also the better option for content creation right now at most price points.

And if you're going to do basic adding
just do it off your tablet don't worry your phone you don't need a big old computer for that.

I am a longtime PC user and I bought this winter a 4TB MacBook Pro M2 Max with 64GB of RAM. I am very happy with my purchase even if it cost me an arm and a leg mainly because of the 4TB upgrade. I didn't want to edit with a SSD connected to my laptop and needed the space to store all of my active projects. I am glad that I went this route cuz my laptop is 50-90% full all the time.

Thank you for your detailed explanation. I learned important information that I didn't know. I use my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra phone in my vlog shooting. I was thinking of buying a Macbook Pro for my editing work, but I was told that I might experience image loss when transferring the videos I shot from my Samsung phone to my Macbook. I couldn't understand this. What do you think about it? After all, when I shoot with a Sony or Canon camera, I need to transfer it to MacPro. Have you ever had any problems while streaming from a non-Apple product?
