I like Bone for nut & saddle material but I work primarily on Acustic guitars. Im learning a hell of alot about electrics watching this channel. BTW anyone wondering about Crimsons tools. They are Amazing quality I just ordered some more stuff..
These videos are awesome! Your voice-overs poking fun at yourself are hilarious. It's also nice to see how well everyone gets along with each other there. Finally getting my wood shop (more of a workbench and some tools) together and hope to get back into guitar building so I can order more tools from you guys! Can't wait for the 3 hour build!
My ex wife, who grew up in Notton near Maiden Newton in the 50s and 60, speaks highly of the Thimble Inn, three minutes away from you. Hope it's still excellent.
Here is a quick tip you might find useful. If you put syringe needles on the end of you super glue bottles you get to control what flow you require i.e. a fine tube or a larger bore tube. The fine tubes are useful for frets. If they become blocked you simply change the syringe needle.
A suggestion for fun: Make a pumpkin shaped guitar or a witch hat shaped guitar for Halloween and use glow in the dark powder with resin for the inlays.
*sigh* well, I cracked and had to order some stunning stains in order to be in with a shout here. Looking good when that finishing oil went on! Ben, I've got some lovely padauk that I've started making a guitar out of (photo in the forum) - if you're good, I'll tell you where I bought it! I could really see it as a Crimson Guitars series :)
Yes, horns are keratin, the same as hair and nail. Haven't tried it as a nut, but I would assume it's close to ebony soundwise. Which is not bad, unless you are after a bright sound. Yep, Flinn & Garlick. I have a few of their saws. And a Clifton 4 1/2. Some things are still made well.
You said you manufacture the leveling beam. I'm curious how much of your supplies you actually manufacture? Do you rebrand others' products? Are your products manufactured out of the country?
When you installed the first neck inlay, you had over flow of glue. You then held it down with pliers. Then sprayed it with something. What was that something you sprayed ? Very interesting. Thanks for everything
how cool would it be if you repeated that "bowtie" dovetail pattern down the hole body and then attached wings in a contrasting wood? maybe my next build??? or ben's....
Buffalo horn, rhino horn, fingernails, hair, it's all keratin based materials, just different amounts of compression. Well remembered Mr Crowe. PS. Stage Left is the left side of the stage when you are FACING the audience, the front of the stage is near the audience, the back of the stage is away from the audience. If that helps for future. And at some point, I really ought to get in touch about building things properly rather than my way - but I think you'll appreciate what I'm doing even if it is a bit insane. Perhaps BECAUSE it's a bit insane. I'll email you. P.S. Loving the current builds but sometimes you just need more footage so I've been watching the old series from the 12 hour build onwards. Thank you :) :) :)
I recently modified a Telecaster to House 2 humbuckers instead of two single coils I'm having a difficult time finding an appropriate Bridge plate everything I find seems too cheap or comes with a pickup Etc I do have a set of Pearly Gates I'm dropping in this Beast I was wondering if you had any suggestions
Can I ask what's the deal with just the neck pickup? I mean sure if the person who gets it can just have a bridge pickup routed, but surely it's better to have the bridge pickup on its own, as more people use it?
It's the same as the single-hum rock thing, but for jazz. ;) Look for Jens Larsen's review of his Ibanez, he strums the bridge pickup a few times, and it sounds roaring awesome and he's like "I have no use for that".
I love roller nuts. I realize you hate them, Ben, and its kind of a pet peave of yours. I've had nothing but success with them and i think they work great, though.
+Tone Fingerz thank you! On average for custom shop (ie partially cnc made) its a matter of only a few months, 3 to 4 I think. A full hand made master build can be up to a year or more, we've got the list right down from its height at around a 3 year wait.. Btw if you phone up and order before the 16th of September (2017) you get a 10% discount plus two entries into the giveaway to win this 6 hour guitar! I'm looking forward to spending a bit more time building a guitar for you! B
Tusk is best:( favourite being graphic, and a Paul Reed Smith But whenever a different guitar, best replacement is tusk because it's nice and hard Drop on a table it rings beautifully, but most importantly no variables, get me 12 different bone nuts And they'll all sound way different, but tusk man made ivory by GRAPH TECH in particular, there's perfect consistency Sounds better too because it's a bit harder, brighter and more slippery Bone sounds like rubber when dropped on a table
The botero id called a dutchman and it would look cook and that to a future build i use them alto route the template and use the porter spacing collet i like to clear min e out for pointed tips instead of leaving them round look more handmade love your show thanks for ranking the time i just love north in wa state by the canadian border vie been checking your todos i usually make my own stuff like that but i say help the buisiness
Graphite is the material used for the nut on all of my electric guitars. I like it just fine. My acoustic has what I think might be plastic. I would love to have it changed to quartz, just to see what that would sound like. Quartz shatters so easily, though. Maybe onyx? Has anyone ever used quartz or onyx for the nut?
I noticed you can still see the truss rod route, is that where you went too long? Or as that because you moved the nut towards the bridge from the tear out?
Honestly Benwise Gamgee, blaming Shaun for the nut being knocked off. Everyone knows a Bad Workman Blames His Tools!!!! (Sorry Sean, [pick your spelling] I couldn't resist. When I get my free course, you can beat me up, or worse, make me eat PIZZA)
I have a question regarding nuts since you're adding yours in this episode. I've seen some builders on UA-cam using wood as a material for the nut. Is this strictly for aesthetics or can wood work ok? For example, I have some Rock Maple. Should I dare to use it for my build? Btw, love watching all your posts! - 50 year old noobie.
Derrick R I've used wood before. I did soak the slots in super glue, but I'm not sure it was strictly necessary. Have a go it should be fine. You can swap a nut out easily if you don't like it.
Bone over plastic every time. Every time a guitar with a plastic nut hits my bench and I have a choice between adjusting the original plastic or making a new nut, there's a bone blank in my vise being cut up like there wasn't a decision to make. I tend to buy blanks in bulk and discard the ones that don't sound right when I trip them. I like steel locking nuts from a quality floyd (not pot metal from cheap ones) for 'metal' guitars. I like bras nuts too. It really depends on the sound of the rest of the guitar and intended purpose what I think is best. I confess I have not tried horn or Tusq. Had an old graphtech carbon impregnated plastic nut in a strat for about 15 years, great tuning stability and string life but a bit dark sounding, particularly with matching saddles.
Ben, had I been there, I’d have gotten (or sent for) a damp paper towel, so you could clean your face... at least an hour before they told you about it. The bastards.
Why you hammer in the end of the frets while the middle comes in as last hammered. Why not hammering from one side to the other side then the mid stay not outside
The way I understand it is that you hammer in the ends, then when you hammer in the middle it pushes the ends out, so the tangs (?) are not directly under the marks made from hammering them in, which give the frets a better grip. I don't really know if that's true, but that's the way I heard it and it does seem to make sense.
man you really are on to something. shit i wud watch this on regular tv. damn build off competition then auction guitars off for hungry kids man. you shud approach the tv company and invent the show so that way we can help feed kids and help homeless animals n stuff more. fuk theres never shit on tv but tatoo shows n cartoons that i like. im sure millions of artists wud watch this.

"going live every day at 18:00 and 18:30 (GMT)"
You know you are an hour early, right?
Yeah, I know, call it a weekend treat. Plus I couldn't wait for you all to watch.
Well that's no good! I'm behind and had to skip through this one to catch up.
Crimson Custom Guitars Ben , was that a Norris smoothing plane I saw in the cabinet behind you ?
I like Bone for nut & saddle material but I work primarily on Acustic guitars. Im learning a hell of alot about electrics watching this channel. BTW anyone wondering about Crimsons tools. They are Amazing quality I just ordered some more stuff..

Oh my god, this is so intense! :D I'm with you, Ben. You'll be one of the most awesome people in guitar universe if you pull this out. ;)
It takes me six hours just to dimension the wood (granted, I don't have a jointer, so most time is spent with a #7 handplane)... Love the series!
My ex wife, who grew up in Notton near Maiden Newton in the 50s and 60, speaks highly of the Thimble Inn, three minutes away from you. Hope it's still excellent.

"That's not crap; that's glue....hopefully." Line of the day.
A suggestion for fun: Make a pumpkin shaped guitar or a witch hat shaped guitar for Halloween and use glow in the dark powder with resin for the inlays.
loving the build thus far!!
*sigh* well, I cracked and had to order some stunning stains in order to be in with a shout here. Looking good when that finishing oil went on! Favorite nut material? Unicorn Horn
My favorite guitar nut material is donkey's bollocks. Hahahahaha!
Some things are still made well.
one challenge would be a company best inlay contest however that would probably effect production across the board
6hr build, impressive to say the least
I replaced the nut on my Gretsch with a piece of solid brass and I have been very happy with that.
Ben, next time do a 6 hr build with another builder...you vs someone else in the shop
What's your favorite nut material?
Sound like a your asking me for my favorite kind of mature video material. 😂
Bone & graph nut are great
Make a video of that sliding dovetail idea, sounds interesting
Hey Ben...why don't you do the dovetail on the 90 hour build. That would be sweet!!
You said you manufacture the leveling beam. I'm curious how much of your supplies you actually manufacture? Do you rebrand others' products? Are your products manufactured out of the country?
Keratin is what horn is made from. As with your nails and hair!
Could you use timascus as us as a nut material?
When you installed the first neck inlay, you had over flow of glue. You then held it down with pliers. Then sprayed it with something. What was that something you sprayed ? Very interesting. Thanks for everything
Superglue accelerator.. Nasty stuff but very very effective! My pleasure, thanks for watching! B
how cool would it be if you repeated that "bowtie" dovetail pattern down the hole body and then attached wings in a contrasting wood? maybe my next build??? or ben's....
Buffalo horn, rhino horn, fingernails, hair, it's all keratin based materials, just different amounts of compression. Well remembered Mr Crowe. PS. What is that thing which looks like a stick-grenade, hanging by it's handle beside the hand-planes?
I recently modified a Telecaster to House 2 humbuckers instead of two single coils I'm having a difficult time finding an appropriate Bridge plate everything I find seems too cheap or comes with a pickup Etc I do have a set of Pearly Gates I'm dropping in this Beast I was wondering if you had any suggestions
Come on hammer that first fret all the way down!
Can I ask what's the deal with just the neck pickup? I mean sure if the person who gets it can just have a bridge pickup routed, but surely it's better to have the bridge pickup on its own, as more people use it?
I tend to use the neck pickup more than the bridge, depends really..
I use 2, never really liked the sound of a single pickup myself, although I understand what you're saying. The superstrats always had the bridge one
It's the same as the single-hum rock thing, but for jazz. ;) Look for Jens Larsen's review of his Ibanez, he strums the bridge pickup a few times, and it sounds roaring awesome and he's like "I have no use for that".
Luke Mcfarlane
I prefer the richness of a neck pickup
I love roller nuts. I realize you hate them, Ben, and its kind of a pet peave of yours. I've had nothing but success with them and i think they work great, though.
Is there any reason not to use stainless steel frets? (other that they are a bit harder to work with)
I agree with your comment and he mentioned how extra soft the fret wire was. Maybe he likes them to wear faster and do re-fret jobs more often?
That nut drive you nuts...
Finally! I waited up!
Sorry... context needed. 'm in Perth. It's very late here, but I want to see how this comes out :)
Woah, mind blown, you are already experiencing Sunday! Thank you for staying up to watch this series, the next episode will be live in half an hour.
"I need to slow down.", "You need to wash your face", "Yeah". HAHAHAHAHA
What is it you're spraying on the superglue every time?
Activator
Follow up question: What exactly does the Activator do?
feudiable Also called Accelerator, it basically makes the glue cure quicker.
amazing man. how long is the wait list to wait for a build?
+Tone Fingerz thank you! On average for custom shop (ie partially cnc made) its a matter of only a few months, 3 to 4 I think. 27:11 That reminds me: when you wash your face in the shower, where do you stop?
Where do you get the spray to set glue? or what is it called? Cheers

graphtech
Bits of this are like getting a dirty phone call from a guitar builder the breathing is so heavy lol
My lungs are about now starting to get back to what they were pre a decade or more of smoking.. and it has been nearly 14 years since I quit 😞
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars your a good man stopping though!
No superglue on the frets? My god, man!
I like almonds the best.
Why Sean/Shaun the Brave?
There is a Meat Cleaver hanging on the wall, in reach of Benwise Gamgee!!!!
Sean the Very BRAVE!!!!

Bone
Ivory , Unicorn horn or Gruffalo tooth
I couldn't bring myself to use a Gruffalo tooth that way! B
wouldn't it more easy doing a zero fret?
My favorite nut material is a fret 🤣
Saïan Cantin Good choice!
My favourite nut material is girl-on-girl
No ...we're not looking at the sharp bit! 10.40 ish
Am I the only one who wants to just walk up to Ben and just like... rub his head?
6 hours is not really enough time for the details and the details and little things are more important than you realize
You should watch some of my other videos.. I know more than a little about 'details and little things' 😀 thanks for commenting though. B
This whole series is nut material
