Welcome to the 6 hour build! Two new episodes of this series will be going live every day at 18:00 and 18:30 (GMT) till Sunday. For a chance to WIN THIS GUITAR, use the coupon code '6hrz' when checking out on our online store. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
You should give us a long build, you were talking about the perfection of tao guitars, you should give us a perfect build, no time limit. Just you an a masterpiece.
I'd love to see a 'too many cooks spoil the broth' style video. Where each part is designed without revealing details or aesthetics to the other luthiers, and a frankenguitar is born!
Next build please All hand tools, no power tools except hand drill. Tool budget of 600 pounds. Time limit equivalent to 4 weekends in the garage. 8 days 6 hours each. Glue ups overnight. Can be as fancy or intricate as you like.
I would like a long build, you said tao guitars were perfection, GIVE US PERFECTION! Start to finish, using the tools you love. No time limit, just careful consideration!
I like the voice over because it seems with you not having to describe everything, you can actually think clearly about what you are doing. Enjoying the videos.
Ben an idea for the next crazy build, Well you know how Brian May tells us that he made his guitar out of bits of old furniture that was lying around, go to a flea market, find an interesting old cabinet or table and turn it into a guitar.
To see a 9 hour or maybe even 6 hour build off like you guys did with the cigar box guitars but actual 6 strings between Ben, Christopher and Tom would be cool
how about a 48h build, but where you go for a super high finish with burst staining and lacquer. Also, some airbrush flip paint graphics over the top! And LEDs in the neck that light up when you play!!!! haha
Love these guitar building series. You once mentioned an idea where you'd build a guitar using minimal tools and tools that you could comfortable use/store in an apartment. Would love to see a series like that that focuses on the ingenuity of the tool user and provide practical tips for amateurs.
I would like to see you build the most innovative and unusual guitar you can imagine, both when it comes to materials and design. Built with a super high finish all you soul put in to it. Take all the time you need, NO speed build! :)
MrHRY so something like a Purple Heart body, flamed Ebony top with a padauk neck and a baked flamed maple fingerboard? I guess those are the oddest timbers I can think of. In reference to design, maybe a 30 Fret thing like Ibanez did, some form of Floyd and a Crimson body shape. That would be cool 😂
I think the next challenge should be to give James, Christopher and Tom, one at a time, 16hrs over 2 days to build a guitar from as similar wood, and hardware as possible, with at least a mandatory 12th fret inlay of their choice, using only the tools and machinery available in Bens workshop. Then when they are all completed there could be a public vote, and auction similar to the cigar box challenge. It would be interesting to compare their designs and general approach to building. Also I think there could be quite alot of trying to sabotage each other to add to the fun!
you could just get a roll of 3d printing filament for your side dots. the rolls come in many many differant materials, including nylon, abs, pla, glow in the dark stuff, and even wood/metal infused plastics. the stuff sometimes comes kinda coarse, depending on what type of filament you get. however, it's diameter is consistant and circular. i have a bunch of these rolls sitting in my room because i just so happen to have a 3d printer. :)
What I really want to see is that 90 hour build you've been talking about! I truly admire your amazing talent and I want to see what you can do when you have the time to create something truly spectacular!!!!!! Please do that build soon!!!
Teresa Laing probably started it but still working on it. Think about it, 90 hours non stop would be impossible, so he's probably spreading (or will spread the work out over a long time. As long as the total amount of hours put into it is 90 it counts right?
I would like to see the next guitar to be a hollow body. Take as long as you like but I like you to carve the body top and body bottom with a CNC machine. Then take over with your competent hands.
My idea: a race between two luthiers to see who can build a guitar faster (specifications such as scale length and general things that must be included will be given) and extra points are earned for extras built in like inlays and each point reduces your total build time My second idea: build a guitar with no spacial tools (no power tools, expensive or rare tools etc.) and on an low budget. You must improvise for many things because you wont have the exact tools for the job (i wish i could do a build once but I barely have any tools or access to quality wood thats where the idea came from)
It would take such a long time to build and film, but what if you went and cut down your own trees, milled and dry it, and used them in a build. It would be really cool and it would give you a huge connection to the guitar.
I'd love to see an in depth video on what it takes to fit a sustainiac to a guitar. Ideally an already finished guitar rather than one you're already in the middle of making. There's very few videos on it in my experience
you should experiment with making a guitar from rotting, or wood with holds in it, you can will the holes with epoxy or resin and put powder paint and other things in it : )
Build a 7 string fanned fret guitar, I know you've shown how to make a fanned fret fretboard but I want to see the whole thing!!! I think that would be sick
Do the drinking game build but James has to drink the tequila. Here's the game. You and James build a timeline with, say, ten time points. Example - at minute 45 you'll have a completely carved body that only needs sanding and drilling for the bridge. If you do it in that time, then James drinks a shot. If you don't do it in that time, you have to drink the shot AFTER you've finished the build. You come up with order, timeline, and time allotment for the whole build. You have to hit or beat each one. One thing. If body is 45 and you do it in 38, you don't get those 7 minutes to help out with the next. You get a 1 minute rest between stages and each stage has exactly only the time you agreed to. Have fun.
How about something like a Chapman stick or an upright electric bass? (basically anything Tony Levin related) I know it's not your normal build, but it could expand your repertoire, and the cool factor would be through the roof!
you should do a guitar build using your best people on their best position. Probably an hour and a bit to run thru a finished piece. Oh BTW a cardboard guitar was done already by a card board company in conjunction with fender guitars.
I have a necklace pendant which is a sphere made out of a blue mineral with inlays of the continents made out of minerals coming from each continent respectively... That might be an idea... But in disc form of course
Ben, make a 7 or 8 string electric 'sitar' (obviously with a guitar neck a la the Coral electric sitars) - but also include more sympathetic strings and maybe allow combinations of them to be sounded while others muted, thus allowing different chords to sound behind the main played notes. Be a Djentleman... :)
Let's say we want to create a pretty standard guitar body and we have a nice 3" by 20" by 20" block of wood. But sadly but we don't have access to power tools at all. What would be your strategy to cut the outline with hand tools only and how would you get the body thickness below 2" in a finite amount of time?
Next crazy build? Build a bass using hand tools only. No electrical tools, or machines whatsoever. The "No Power ___ Hour Bass". There's a challenge...
Next challenge: Get a team of 4 year olds to design a guitar. Weird shape, weird paint job, neck comes out of the side, extra small harp attachment? Gotta build it.
Next challenge should be for James to do a 12 hour build. Not diddly bo, a proper build. A 2 man build where you can only use one hand each would be interesting.
What would a1880s toolmaker say to see his creation being used to help craft an electric guitar? "Outf**kingstanding! It's jolly impressive to see ones labours being appreciated"
I know this is an old video but I have an idea, i think you and 2 others should all have 24 hours to build a cigarbox style guitar (electric) and there should be a blind test and then a vote to see who wins. just for fun :) I nominate James lol
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars yeah! You could get points for style, creativity, sound quality and ease pf play or something. I forgot how quick you guys build. I was invisioning something overly custom and pushed to 11 but im sure you guys still don't need 24 hours lol. Competitions are great fun!

to answer your question about the cardboard guitar... it has been done.. fender did it..
and what a suprise.. it sounded like shit lool!!!!
Crimson Custom Guitars the cardboard guitar was done (as said) and sounded like a Strat. Not shit.
what should ou do next? an electric violin, in 5 hours.
i disagree mr sutcliffe. it sounded crap.
You should give us a long build, you were talking about the perfection of tao guitars, you should give us a perfect build, no time limit. Just you an a masterpiece.
I'd love to see a 'too many cooks spoil the broth' style video. Where each part is designed without revealing details or aesthetics to the other luthiers, and a frankenguitar is born!
freaking awsome idea!... i was kinda hung on that drunk build idea lol.. no time limit.. just watch ben fumble around in a drunken stupor lol
Charles Harrison Music Love it!
danar dalin ñ
Next build please
All hand tools, no power tools except hand drill.
Tool budget of 600 pounds.
Time limit equivalent to 4 weekends in the garage. 8 days 6 hours each. Glue ups overnight.
Can be as fancy or intricate as you like.

Ben an idea for the next crazy build,
Well you know how Brian May tells us that he made his guitar out of bits of old furniture that was lying around, go to a flea market, find an interesting old cabinet or table and turn it into a guitar.
2nd best idea ive seen so far.
bens gonna have a lot of ideas to choose from :D
To see a 9 hour or maybe even 6 hour build off like you guys did with the cigar box guitars but actual 6 strings between Ben, Christopher and Tom would be cool
Dear Ben! These videos are awsome! I love to watch how passionate you are for the wood, for the build.
how about a 48h build, but where you go for a super high finish with burst staining and lacquer. Also, some airbrush flip paint graphics over the top! And LEDs in the neck that light up when you play!!!! haha

Blown away by the inlay ...crazy in a six hour build but pretty epic! I guess Ben does really like a challenge after all!
I would like to see you build the most innovative and unusual guitar you can imagine, both when it comes to materials and design. Built with a super high finish all you soul put in to it. Take all the time you need, NO speed build! :)
that sounds like the 90 hour build!
I don't agree. I would like to see something off the charts in all kinds of ways.
That would be cool 😂
the inlay's take this guitar to another level, impressive.
I think the next challenge should be to give James, Christopher and Tom, one at a time, 16hrs over 2 days to build a guitar from as similar wood, and hardware as possible, with at least a mandatory 12th fret inlay of their choice, using only the tools and machinery available in Bens workshop. I definitely want to see you build a cardboard guitar. That Fender video from a couple years ago both fascinates me and drives me crazy. Do it, Ben!
Ben, please do a *100 Year Guitar Build*!
Only use tools in your workshop that are older than 100 years or where around at that time...
Brilliant carpentry. Your genuine f’ing (language!) love of the vocation is inspiring
you could just get a roll of 3d printing filament for your side dots. the rolls come in many many differant materials, including nylon, abs, pla, glow in the dark stuff, and even wood/metal infused plastics. the stuff sometimes comes kinda coarse, depending on what type of filament you get. however, it's diameter is consistant and circular. i have a bunch of these rolls sitting in my room because i just so happen to have a 3d printer. :)

I would like to see the next guitar to be a hollow body. Take as long as you like but I like you to carve the body top and body bottom with a CNC machine. Then take over with your competent hands.
Lets see Christopher attempt a timed build!
I'd still like to see the build with simple tools that anyone might have in their shed!
I like how you added challenges, during a challenge 😁
My idea: a race between two luthiers to see who can build a guitar faster (specifications such as scale length and general things that must be included will be given) and extra points are earned for extras built in like inlays and each point reduces your total build time
My second idea: build a guitar with no spacial tools (no power tools, expensive or rare tools etc.) and on an low budget. Suggestions:-
How to sharpen router bits
How to set-up a bandsaw.
Like to see a mini totorial on installing a 2 point tremolo bridge. Start to finish
I think a three hour build is viable. Simple strat design, use a template, bolt on neck, etc. I'd love to see you attempt it!
Go with no pick ups and fretless
On video the inlay looks like a piece of a Van Gogh painting. Very beautiful.
It would take such a long time to build and film, but what if you went and cut down your own trees, milled and dry it, and used them in a build. It would be really cool and it would give you a huge connection to the guitar.
Build an "All England" Guitar. Build with wood and hardware sourced as locally as possible
I'd love to see an in depth video on what it takes to fit a sustainiac to a guitar. Ideally an already finished guitar rather than one you're already in the middle of making. There's very few videos on it in my experience
you should experiment with making a guitar from rotting, or wood with holds in it, you can will the holes with epoxy or resin and put powder paint and other things in it : )
An exotic materials build: perspex, carbon fibre, that sort of thing.
no wood build. materials like you suggested. . . aluminium would be nice too.
Doing a hollow body electric would be way cool. How about a bass or a ukulele? Or a matched set of all three?
A "Ben vs." series would be cool. Ben vs. the top Crimson apprentice.
Ben vs. other Crimson builders.
Ben vs. another UA-cam builder.
Etc...
Ben, you should build a bass! In my little town of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, there is a man named Ken Smith. I highly recommend you look at his work.
he is a great craftsman a twin neck guitar in 3 hours great idea two of you to make it easy
build one with "scrap" ( leftovers off cuts or a pallet )
Ben, how about a 12 string electric, left hand in 6 hrs. I'm sure with your talents this would be a doddle of a challenge!
I would love to see you do a live build .... because your work is amazing
We are planning something like that ine day soon..ish. Will be awesome fun if I can pull it off. B
i love that fingerboard! its GORGEOUS AN SO DIFF! Y do you do it? Your response said it all! I F@%*ING LOVE IT! PASSION MAN!
How about a timed double neck built?
How about a chopping block style guitar? It'd be a good way to use up some of the scraps and off cuts.
You should try a full build with only manual hand tools, in as short amount of time as possible just for "fun" ;P
Build a 7 string fanned fret guitar, I know you've shown how to make a fanned fret fretboard but I want to see the whole thing!!! I think that would be sick
Do the drinking game build but James has to drink the tequila. Here's the game. You and James build a timeline with, say, ten time points. You get a 1 minute rest between stages and each stage has exactly only the time you agreed to. Have fun.
this man is a GENIUS...
I'd like to see a video where you make an entire guitar using only cheap handheld tools :)
9:30 yes you do. we all do. we don't like to talk about it, but we do it.
6 hour semi hollow guitar with two pickups and volume and tone controls and a 3-way
On your request for content, could do with a mini'torial about using inlay powders. Thanks :)
How about a build off between christoper and ben 6-8 hours each and you can produce what you want
Cardboard guitar has been done. I've seen a video on UA-cam once.
Here it is ua-cam.com/video/7Oo2H-W7d6A/v-deo.html
yeah fender commissioned it .. and what a surprise.. it sucked...
kinda cool that it held the string tension though ..
And here: ua-cam.com/video/XZVlQaWp_1Y/v-deo.html
FailingForFun only held the string tension coz they covered it in some ultra hard resin stuff
It was a Fender Stratocaster. Fender built a cardboard Stratocaster.
I have a necklace pendant which is a sphere made out of a blue mineral with inlays of the continents made out of minerals coming from each continent respectively... That might be an idea... But in disc form of course
a live round the clock tag team build. during which, users live-request what features the guitar has.
How much copper and burning can you put on the guitar?
I'm a big fan of these series! what is that amazing song of the ending credits? Plz tell me what it is.
You can largely avoid sanding facets into the neck if you rock the sander on the curve instead of following it.
Something neck-through would be pretty cool
Build an acoustic guitar!!
I second this
You definately should do the drinking game build :D BTW. The fretboard looks fairly thick isn't it? All the best!
I wanna see a double neck next
Hey Ben, you didn't happen to live in Ruwa in Zimbabwe did you?
next video, left hand custom build using layered tonewoods and lamenated neck. maybe a fretless bass????? mmmmm that sounds saucy.
Could be fun. B
My favorite part is the voice over.
I'd love to see a bent sides hollowbody build
Ben, make a 7 or 8 string electric 'sitar' (obviously with a guitar neck a la the Coral electric sitars) - but also include more sympathetic strings and maybe allow combinations of them to be sounded while others muted, thus allowing different chords to sound behind the main played notes.
Be a Djentleman... :)
a no wood build would suit this idea, too.
Do a 3 hour build with a CNC cut body
Let's say we want to create a pretty standard guitar body and we have a nice 3" by 20" by 20" block of wood. But sadly but we don't have access to power tools at all. What would be your strategy to cut the outline with hand tools only and how would you get the body thickness below 2" in a finite amount of time?
dude guitar building drinking game? thats rock and roll as fuck! gotta do it with some whiskey.
So 12 fret inlay but no bridge pickup or volume/tone pots?....
how old was that pizza, I thought it was a piece of hardboard at first, lol :-))
nice going!
what is that little hand crank called?
Next challenge should be for James to do a 12 hour build. Not diddly bo, a proper build.
A 2 man build where you can only use one hand each would be interesting.
Metal fretboard, fretless?
What would a1880s toolmaker say to see his creation being used to help craft an electric guitar?
"Outf**kingstanding! It's jolly impressive to see ones labours being appreciated"
I'd love to see a build with just hand tools. No powertools whatsoever. Not even to cut out the body. It can take more than six hours though ;)
Build suggestions? Do a bass build and then have Scott from SBL give it away. Or just give it to me and eliminate the middleman.
I want to see you build a heavy metal guitar
Start with some martial art Ben, you use most of your muscles, if not all, and you build op a good condition fast.
60 minute build!
Hello please build a burl top 3neck guitar blue line the inlays in this video clip. Or better you tried to make it hollow body.
Headstock angle?
How about a One Day Xmas Build, that involves everyone in the Shop.... completed in one day with a Festive Theme / Color
Why don't you build a double neck bass/ six string or 12string/six string
Fun fact! Signal snowboards actually made a Cardboard strat!
3 hour guitar kit build, but the outcome is not shitty.
cardboard strat made by fender custom shop the sander you was talking about is called a slack belt sander
12 hour viola de Gamba, you've had training, give it 6 strings and a pickup if you want a challenge.
Do a *No Power Tools* guitar challenge.
he announced that but never started, it would be great
How about a Diddley Bow where we, the viewers, vote on the items you have to incorporate in to the build? The three hour guitar build?
An acoustic build could also be cool but I know that's a whole other ball park in terms of time
I want Ben to build an entire guitar out of a single big piece of wood, which means he has to make the body, neck and fingerboard out of one piece.
perhaps a build useing only materials donated by veiwers of your channel
I know this is an old video but I have an idea, i think you and 2 others should all have 24 hours to build a cigarbox style guitar (electric) and there should be a blind test and then a vote to see who wins. just for fun :) I nominate James lol
That would be great fun.. though in 24 hours we could build 3 or 4 then vote on which is best but also try and guess who made what!? B
