Thank you, Alexa, for sharing this! I'm looking for a career transition from Senior UI / Visual Design to Product and this is very insightful (:

Thanks Alexa! Great and helpful tips! I had a quick question. I'm a little late in working on a career transiton into design. I've tried to transition to UX Research but I haven't been too successful so far. I am now considering Product Design as there appear to be a lot more opportunitiies for Product Designers vs. UX Researchers. My question is what is the average age range of a Product Designer? I ask because I'm 38 and it could take up to 4 years to break into Product Design. Would I be too old?

Hi!! Glad these tips are helpful for you :) I do think a transition into UX Research can be more challenging at times because in the past it's been known to be a more heavily academic route with the need of a high level degree, etc.
For Product Design (or really any tech career), there is no discrimination on age. So no, if you are 38 now and 42 when you become more established in your career, that's not too old.
Some internship opportunities are designed for college students through a company's university program making some of those opportunities harder to find but again, there is no discrimination on age.
Hope that's helpful and GOOD LUCK! 💪

Hey Alexa, I am preparing to start my graduate degree in HCI this fall, and I need some advice. I have a stipend for a new computer, and I am looking to trade in my M1 Air for a 16 M1 Pro. Do you have a recommendation for memory for the 16in? My Air has performed very well with 16 GB of ram, but I am looking at something larger like the 16 for client meetings, python classes, and away from my desk graphic work. Do you have any strong feelings about the specs of a machine?
