his video simplifies the distinctions between UI Design, UX Design, and Product Design, offering clarity on the unique roles each plays in creating successful digital products. It highlights shared topics like design thinking, user research, and prototyping. This resource is valuable for aspiring designers and product professionals, helping bridge knowledge gaps. Kudos to Alvin for shedding light on these crucial aspects of the design and product development process! 🌟
This video was really educating as you treated every product position(UI/UX designer role and Product designer role) accordingly.... Thank you very much
I've had discussions about this with other designers who insist it's all the same. Someone I know who works in one of the FAANG companies told me they're transitioning to calling the UI/UX Design role Product Design instead. It's kind of a bummer that people don't use definitions in practice.
This video us aligned with my understanding as well 👍I would add that the Product designer should build more domain/industry knowledge about the product compared to the UI/UX role. And, they should have more ownership of their work and see it as a long-term commitment, not just a one-off design exercise
Can you make a video about the difference between a Product Designer vs a Product Marketing Manager…. I’m debating which of the these two careers is best for me?
When a company is hiring for a UI/UX Designer, I know they value Design very little. It's called "Interaction Designer" or "Product Designer". A lot of the conversion, renvention, growth are usually handled by the marketing, growth, and CFO/CMO.
Great info thanks. Just thinking out loud, If I could add to the UX side, UXers probably also tackle equitable/accessible design as big part of what they do.
thank you for the really great content very helpful for us beginners! i'm also curious to know then whatis the role of a Product Manager bec it seems that its quite close to the role of a Product Designer? How do they differ from each other. 😊 Appreciate it a lot!
I think the same. They have really good content and can explain a lot of digital products things without difficulty. Maybe they need to penetrate in USA and Latin America Audiences
Just to clarify, does a product designer encompass all aspects of the product design such as the UI Design, UX Design, and UX Research & Marketing? And the other titles are like specializations within the field?
I have a question: as a senior/lead ui-ux designer I start the conversation with the client from the brief and then suggest best way to go, from prototypes approach for testing towards handover to devs, mentoring juniors, training people in accessibility and looking after the best process for the team-cross collaboration. So what would be the best title for it? It isn't head of design cause we don't have a big team but I am working with the client and other head of departments about best approach depending on the problem and the more efficient way to deliver. Is that Design ops even if it is design strategy? Or is it Design strategist (looking after client design management + ui/ux overview of process + design ops)? thanks
The video has left me quite confused. The tasks attributed to Product Designers are typically handled by Product Managers, who also take on some UX responsibilities.
by now we're just splitting hairs. practically all these topics are interchanged between experience designer and product designers. sure, UI is a separate sub-function. But in the end UX guys and product guys could basically be doing similar jobs. its just very confusing when people say these things. As young designers entering into the industry we really are unsure of what to call ourselves. in my opinion, a UX designer and product designers should be combined into just one role. UX design.
Thanks for such important insight. I subbed immediately. If i may ask, Where(Sites) can i get free or affordable courses & certifications that are industry recognized both in the US & Internationally for Product Designer jobs?🙏🏽
Who do you think would be better suited to become a digital product designer (perhaps after doing a digital product design masters/specialization in either case): a business & marketing background/skillset, or a computer science/systems related background?
Might be a silly question but doesn't following good UX/UI practice (ie. all the areas you covered) result in and increased user adoption, conversion, retention rate and inevitably growth of the overall product?
Thanks for clarifying and roles and responsibilities of different designations. This helps. Have a question on what if the designer who is not good at UI and who is already doing the role of a product designer? Is it an advantage or not? Your thoughts plz
Hi Jane, to be a product designer you will need to have UX and UI design skills or digital design skills. If you’re coming from product management background and keen to switch to product design, I suggest to self teach yourself the essential tools and also pick up free resources and short courses to get yourself up to scratch while building a portfolio. We did a video about Product Manager vs Product Design to help you 😊 ua-cam.com/video/r4zzn9i3oss/v-deo.htmlsi=AU4XzypEupssvRpi
Thanks for making this video, I really appreciate. I'm thinking about heading into product design, I'm new to all of this tech stuff and I'd like any advice or help. Thank you
From my experience, product designer and UX/UI designer are mostly just a naming thing. I would argue that in the industry, UXUI needs to consider business needs and goals as well. Without business requirements, UI is meaningless and we won’t get paid
can you do a video on typical daily tasks for ux ui designers in their jobs , i have just done a course and not sure what will be expected of me when i get my role.. how are the tasks distributed etc
If we design machinery, such as robot (or three-wheel cart and so on), which will serve people deliver things either in indoor (such as in restaurant or hospital or hotel) or in outdoor (deliver things to consumer's house), what is it called?

There are parts that throw me then i realise i action other parts with out even thinking. Thanks for making clear easy dots point for people out there.
The term “product design” can be articulated as digital product design especially these days. However it historically also means physical product design or industrial design
What would you say I major in for me Undergrad that’ll prepare me for this especially down the road as PO or PM. The VA is paying for my degree and I figured comp sci would be the way to go?
How about few more thoughts like in software world we have reusable code; in non software product world can we have reusable design (parts to be easily recyclable) and servicable ( fixable end user vs use and throw which is not environment friendly) this can help reduce electronic waste.

I want to know. I have recently finished a project I was working on and handed to developers to code. In the course, it started as an idea, I did a bit of research and also interviews with people I know will need the product. After, I used the research results to design all the UI's and also did prototyping using Adobe XD. I am from a graphic design background and got into UI/UX after joining a company that had that department. I must say I have successfully designed couple of websites and Mobile app UIs but I am still confused as to what to calll myself. A graphic designer, Product designer? UI designer or what? Help me
Hi Adruma. Thank you for watching. First and foremost, you are a designer. A designer that solves problems for others. But if we talk about specifics, technically you can all yourself anything you want depending on what you’re producing. If it’s digital products, then you can narrow down your role to UI/UX, Digital Designer or Digital Product Designer… Then you can dive deeper into it and further clarify based on the topic of this video. I wouldn’t call myself graphic designer if I’m trying to specialise on digital. Because Graphic Designer is too broad and commonly associated with visual communication design, no matter what the medium is.
Great content! Was wondering if you could do a video about Service Design vs CX Design(Customer Experience) Also, is the latter an emerging field with the likes of Amazon and Apple focusing plenty on customer base, retention and all that. A reply here is fine too, just wanted to hear your thoughts on it. Cheers :)
Hi Benjamin! Thanks for the great question, absolutely we will drop this idea into our content list and make a video for you. In short, you can think of CX as the overarching category, that houses things like Product and Service design. Within their respective context, (ideally) products and services cross path, compliments each other and creates a seamless holistic experience for the customer. It’s meant to be human centred. It’s meant to be a great customer experience. And that’s a topic that a CX designer would be interested about. CX is emerging, but so is Product Design, and Service Design. In some regions, even UX Design is still a topic that companies are only catching up on. So our advise would be for you to look at the available opportunities around you, and gauge what the market needs. Then relative to your strengths and skills, focus on that particular offering. It may well be Service, Product, UX, UI, or the big picture CX. One thing for sure, they all require Human Centred and Design Thinking mindsets. Hope that helps Ben!
@@relabstudios Thank you for the detailed explanation, I appreciate it a whole lot! Definitely agree on the Human Centered and Design Thinking mindsets!

They answered /explained your first question in the middle in video. About the introvert part though, you can do either jobs. I'm introverted and majoring in UX design currently. You have to interact with people either way. I wouldn't recommend you to limit yourself to just UI and be more open to different opportunities. Every company is different. For the last question, yes. It's not hard to go from UI/UX to product design. You have to know UI/UX to be a product designer anyway
