Totally agree with everything! I've been working as a Product Designer since mid last year and I'm so happy. Every day we have different opportunities to work in a more "artistic" or "logical" way!
@@HelloImAlexa hey , i like product design but i am bad and tbh learning software is pretty boring , although I like this career very much and i am also good at it .

Definitely wanna do this career when in the future. It really sparks my interest. I love designing, I alwaysed wanted to become a fashion designer or design houses. I love making and designing things and I feel like im very quick with my designs and love making stuff. Its one of the skills im really good at.
Hi! I'm a CS Engineer. On 2020, I studied design from scratch and I'm persuing a carreer in UI design or even UX, but I haven't been able to find a community with designers with experience, only few full of beginners with noone to ask about real life experiences at that work Would love so much if u can show me a couple of communities with great people where I can learn from. There's a lot of the design industry that I want to learn Thanks, Alexa. I'm glad u keep uploading videos
Hi there! Ahh, okay I have some recs. I would definitely recommend checking out my friends Femke or Christine's design communities. Femke's: superpeer.com/femke and Christine's: superpeer.com/chunbuns - they are both paid communities but provide high value and are very active. You could try it out for a little and if you no longer need to be a paid subscribed you could always cancel the membership. I also recommend checking out Rethink which is a design community founded in SF but offers lots of virtual ways to connect now. Rethink is full of more senior level and manager level Product Designers; link: www.rethinkhq.com And I know I don't offer anything at the moment as far as a more exclusive community goes, but if you have any specific questions as they relate to design/career I'd be happy to try and help you out as much as I can! The best way to connect / ask questions to me day-to-day is on Instagram. I'm rooting for you 🔥
Good afternoon Alexa. I'm a digital marketer but strongly considering career path switch to Product Design. Your guide and support will be very helpful. Thanks.
Hellllo! Great idea, I’ll def think about this. I also have a number of great free and low cost resources to get started which I’ve linked the videos description. If you have any questions from that resource do let me know!
Hi Alexa, amazing video❤ I have recently been laid off, and I've worked in recruitment for the last 7 years so I find myself at crossroads in my career as finding a job in recruitment is rather challenging at the moment and I've always been drawn to the graphic design and UI, so much so, that I am considering switching careers. This means starting from 0 😱. Any advice as to where to start? What are some of the most important things to consider at the beginning of a product design journey? Many thanks for any advice 😊 🙏
Hi there, awe yay so glad to hear you enjoyed the video and exciting that you are interesting in making the switch. Watching a lot of youtube videos is definitely a good place to start to understand how to speak about design and what to expect from this career path. Ultimately you'll want to start to practice design and making projects -- that's where taking a course or a bootcamp may be helpful for you for specific guidance. If you have any specific questions about things to consider you're unsure of feel free to send your questions along! I have a number of my favorite free and low cost resources here too: www.helloimalexa.com/design-resources Good luck 💪
HI. i am a phd student in the field of mechanical engineering. I wish to start a career in the field of product or industrial design to keep my creativity alive. I have a couple of years of experiences in the same field. I wish to know if you know any courses that would enable me to start this career path.
Hi Alexa!! Thank you for this video! I don't think I've ever commented on a youtube video, but I'm newly considering product design as a possible career path for me and I'd love to connect with you! I just graduated from undergrad with a degree in English/Creative Writing, and I'm pursuing Content Strategy roles. But, I'm definitely attracted to the visual and analytical components of product design, and I'm considering applying to a masters program in product design next fall. From my understanding, it seems like a computer science/engineering background isn't necessary for product design- what do you think? I'm not sure how much of a jump it is for me to change gears and learn an entirely new skill - I just love the idea of being creative (and well compensated)- I'd love to speak sometime to hear your thoughts if you have the time to chat :)!
Wooooa, so cool! Glad you left a comment then :) You're right - you do not need a computer science/engineering background to get into Product Design or UX Content Strategy roles. Why don't you check out the resources page on my website to get you started: www.alexaleighh.com/resources If you have any follow ups with specific questions you can shoot me an email - which you can find on my website and if you'd like to meet 1:1 you can book time with me through Superpeer here: superpeer.com/hello_imalexa Wishing you the best with getting started ✨
I think this is a two part answer! First - I think the longer you stay at a company the deeper you can get into the problem space and the more you can really contribute to the product in a big way. I think there's tons of value the longer you stay at a company and I would especially challenge more young people (not saying you are one of them) to try and stay longer at their job versus getting excited about the "next best thing" Now that said, I know myself well enough now to know that about every 2 years seek variety and change. Luckily, I've been able to find that change that I am seeking within my same company in the form of new roles, being on different teams (meaning tackling a different product area), working on team related projects, etc.. This all helps fill the gap with the variety that I am looking for and not shaking things up in the grand scheme of things has actually been so, so nice. Hope that helps!
yay! glad you found it :) Just like any new career, I think yes, there's quite a bit of work to get started and learning design skills takes time and practice. It's a very enjoyable career path though so if you stick with it and put in the time and hard work - it's very rewarding.
Hi , do you have/know any videos or other resources on making a professional portfolio for product design in AI? Most of the videos I see are way above my skill level and difficult to follow.
Oooh good question! I'm not sure actually. I would try to find some designers who work in that space on LinkedIn and see what sort of portfolio they have. I know Julia Fernandez is working at Meta now on the Oculus team so she may be a good person to ask / follow. Link: ua-cam.com/users/adesignwoman
Yay!! Love to hear it. I recommend people who are in college who want to get into product design to consider going to an art and design school and pursue a degree like “interaction design” or “human computer interaction” - it’s possible there are majors that are more centered around digital product design that are names other things now but I’m not 100% sure. On the resources page on my website I link out to some schools/programs which I recommend in the US, hope it’s helpful! www.alexaleighh.com/resources
