Will it damage my engine if I'm a tooth off?
@@ashdobbins3244 It can but most likely it will just run really bad and almost undriveable
@@iamchazhaynes7074 i appreciate it man thank you
Helped me a lot well explained great video
This definitely helps, ive built a 331 stroker and done with the short block about to start assembling the top end and was worrying about this very thing
WORKED FOR ME! Have a 67 mustang 302. Took off the valve cover, got on compression stroke, dropped in the distributor, locked it all back in and boom. Turn key start. Great video. Thanks
Great video man,i have done this about 50 times in my life but i enjoy the hell out of watching others doing it, you can always learn something new!
Young Dude, hats off to you your video has to be one of the best out there for putting a distributor in! Thanks
Great video! As a tech with lots of experience but zero experience with distributors (until now), this video helped me install a new distributer on a foxbody 5.0.
Perfect!! I searched for this demo for like 3 months STRAIGHT!
I did the same thing!!! That’s why after I installed it I wanted to make this video cause everything else out there was all over the place!!
I followed his exact sequence and my new build fired up in the first crank. Thanks for the video. 1993 ford ranger v8 302.
Thank you man, I’m rebuilding after 4years and the dizzy confused me this clears it right up 👍🏼
This has got to be the best video on how to install a distributor here in You tube, great job young man!👍👍😊
Thank you!! It Means a lot! 😁😁
Awesome. Had to take my dist out to get the gt40 lower installed. After watching this, I think I'll have no issue.
You saved me from a $500 round trip to the dyno and back.. great video brother.
Thanks for the video. My distributor died the other day and I am waiting for my new distributor to show up on tuesday. I put the paper towel in the plug hole, and rotated the engine twice, and nothing. Then I put it into the plug hole better and tried again and sure enough at like 40 or some odd degrees BTDC, I got a VERY satisfying pop. Took about 5 minutes to get it to top dead center on compression stroke. Worked great!
Distributor goes in on Tuesday. Hopefully my diagnosis of it being the distributor was accurate. I bet it is
Been putting together my built 302, saw this video and helped immensely compared to the FSM when installing the dizzy. Appreciate the info man, Cheers!!
Your vids are really good. You get to the point and speak clearly. Your terminology is correct and concise. Keep up the excellent work Chaz.
Thank you!! I appreciate that a lot! I always try to think of what I would want if I was watching someone else’s video!
A little follow-up after installing my cam and attempting to set the timing on my 351 w it became apparent through compression checks that the firing order was not correct. Turns out I was sent a 302 cam by the company I purchased it from and installed it. The install was the same however the firing order changed, and once I figured that out I just configured the 302 firing order in my 351 and it started right up.
Wicked videos man! You've been helping me through some tought spots with my Capri!
Very well done. I'm having some problems with my 92 F 150 and you helped me sort it out.
Awesome! Happy I could help!!
Thanks for showing the direction of the distributor. Most vids I've seen have the 1 pointing more towards the passenger side/cylinder 1 side. You placed it almost centered and it solved some if not, all your issues with the firing.
dude like legit , i subbed because this has been the most informative timing video ever. great job dude !
Thank you!! Haha I was trying to make it as helpful as possible ! 😁
You must be Chris Fix's lil brother lol. Very thorough just like him; nice vid fo sho..............😎
Bro, this video is so helpful. I'm doing a cam install, and this answered many of my questions regarding setting TDC. Thanks for helping NOOBs like me, liked & subscribed.
Super happy this helped bro!! Don’t get me confused I’m a noob to! The more I learn the more I find out how much I don’t know 😅😂 thanks for the support !!
I am not sure why you had problems with the other orientation maybe something specific to this year model, but i've had distributors literally 180 degrees out to help with clearancing of vacuum advance line and as long as the spark plug wires are hooked up to where they are supposed to be and in the correct firing order all is good.
Definitely the best video for this EVER
Solid real world demonstration very helpful for my 4.9 inline 6
Best video on installation I’ve seen. Thanks
Thank you!! And no problem!
Your video is frickin incredible. Thanks man. Totally appreciate your knowledge
Having the same problem on my 94 I hope to get it fixed because of this thank you!
Great video brother better than any instructor could teach
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video that really help
Best instructional video on UA-cam 👊😎
Great vid it really helped me out with my 351 Windsor
thank you very much for the information I watch a lot of videos and this one was the easiest to get the job done right thanks again young guy
Thank you for putting the video together got me back Rollin ,buddy tried to help spun the dist. Ty
No worries happy I could help!!
This is hopfully going to help me out tomorrow when I attempt to re-align my distributor after redoing the plugs and wires. I might go the route you are mentioning and taking off the valve covers and checking those. I have no idea when the last time the valve covers on this thing has been off. I just got a 1969 Mustang fastback 302 so who knows if the gaskets are good still on there. Appreciate the info and the second hand knowledge of what NOT to do lol. Appreciate it man, i'll jump back here after firing her up!
We’re you able to get it fired up??? And I hope it helps cause that sounds like waaaaay to cool of car to have sitting around!! And definitely I’m an expert in what not to do 😂
Great vid! Can’t wait for next Sunday for the turbo build! 👍🇨🇦
Thanks man! And me too!!!! It’s finally time!!
bruh...you made this soo much easier to understand. thanks!
AWSOME vid! helped out alot
Thank you!!!! 😁🙏🏻
Awesome video, helped 100000%
Outstanding advice!
Excellent job.thankyou for sharing this
thank you!! for the vid...helped alot getting my new distributor in correct, couldn't figure out why my tfi was pointing the wrong direction. turns out someone installed the original wrong on this parts engine I just bought..
Great video!!
Great job man! Thanks!
Great video im having problems with 1987 5.0 can get time rigth this video is great thanks man
Great video, great information! Thanks
Excellent video! Thank you
Thanks, man. You deserve a sub and then some. I was catching straight hell with that distributor and with this video I was up and running in 15 minutes.
Hey I’m glad to hear you got it all figured out!!! I know how frustrating I was when my car wouldn’t start! I’m glad I could help!! And thank you 🙏🏻
Hey thanks for this video it helped me out a lot.
Saved my ass on my ‘86 Cougar 5.0. Thank you!!!!
No worries!! Glad I could help!

Great explanation, really helped! 👏
No worries!! Glad I could help!
Great video bro keep em coming
Thanks !! And you bet I will!!
Good Demo young fella, well done
Great vid, I’m going to use this when I start my motor in the spring. I’m dropping the 306 in tomorrow. Thanks for making this!!!!
Thanks man! And no worries!! This one confused me so I thought it was a good opportunity to help others out!! 😁
Compression can be heard out of spark plug 1 if loose.
Turn to TDC mark.
Take distributor off.
Look at location of rotor
2 options.
180° out exhaust
Or TDC compression
Obviously if 180 out
Manually crank the balancer until you see mark again.
I promise rotor will be located on plug 1 for distributor.
Just literally just did this.
Nice video
Just putting 5.789654 cents in on the game. Lol
Cheers
So helpful thanks!
Your video is extremely underrated. The fact that you showed what you did wrong instead of just showing how to do it helped me immensely. Subbed.
Same here! Great video!!!
You are the man, i did the exact same thing wrong. Trying this tomorrow!
Awesome! Glad I could help!
I bet I’ve pulled this distributor out 20 times trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Had no clue the distributor had to be at a certain angle. I’m going to try again tomorrow with this information. Thanks!
No worries! Their is different information saying it doesn’t matter but this is what worked for me and I’m glad if it helps!!
@@iamchazhaynes7074 Unfortunately I still can’t get mine running 🥴 I have been working this for 4 days straight 😅
Same here for my 89 town car I’m hoping I didn’t mess the inside up from taking it out so many times times gonna rest and do it the way he says amen thanks big man. 🫵🏻
Doing this tonight....great video....thsnkyou
Nice video but I disagree on your problem, it shouldn’t matter where the cap rotation is, as long as engine is at TDC on compression stroke and rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder! Jm$.02
Agree with you. i've had distributors literally 180 degrees out to help with clearancing of vacuum advance line and as long as the spark plug wires are hooked up to where they are supposed to be and in the correct firing order all is good.
Agree 👍🏻
It literally doesn’t matter at all which way it is mounted 😂! I’m not even sure how he thinks this makes any sense.
If it doesn’t matter, then what’s wrong with doing it the way MOST mechanics do it. (1st cylinder at 1:00, roughly). I think he’s just trying to stay uniform with 99.9 % of other cars. Jeesh!
Good business. Very helpful
Great descriptive video 👍👌
great way of explain bro! Damn it scared the crap out of me when your started the engine 😂🤣 had my head set on 💀🤣😂
😂😂😂😂 hahahaha freaked me out to man!!!!
Great video i think my gear is bad and planning to pull tomorrow and wasn't sure how until seeing your video. Thank you for the help
No worries super happy I could help!! The timing threw me off so bad I’m just happy I can help others out!
Thank you, this is gonna help me a lot, I have this misfire problem with this… it suck’s!
Dude I've been struggling with my first start on my fresh rebuild, tomorrow morning I'm gonna try to re stab my distributor. Thanks for the helpful tips
Great video i used it and it worked well for me. Only question is what is the reason for the rotor and sensor lining up in the video, I followed what you did and it worked well so no complaints. I just want to know why and where could I find information on that. Thank you.
Good information and video I’m going to try it tomorrow on my F 100
Awesome I hope it helps!!
This helped so much thanks
No worries! Glad I could help!
As a fellow UA-camr, great video!
Thanks a lot for the great video!
No worries!! Thanks for the comment!!
Great video young man I like that you stuck with it until you got it right.
Just a quick pointer for anyone working on one before 1986; the difference in the distributor is the tone ring under the rotor. The port fuel injection engines mid 85 and up use a different tone ring with one thinner prong, the 84 85 and below they are all the same.
Thanks for a badly needed refresher Training.
Definitely!! Thanks for the comment!
Super helpful!
Thank you! Glad I could help!
Nice job young man👍
Thank you!! 😁
Sweet how do I connect the wires to the distributor/spark plugs? Great video btw. Very helpful
Nice job pal.
Well done brother! My son and I have been struggling with a 302 and have thrown a shit ton of new parts on it. Wild fluctuations in RPM at idle, with new everything, including the distributor. We must be a tooth off as well. Thank you!👊
No worries!! Did it end up working?? I know mine drove me craaaaaazy! I’m super glad I could help though!!
Really good video ill subscribe
Thank you ! Much appreciated!
Perfect explainer. Way to make your mistake count! Thanks for the help :)
No worries! Super glad I could make this negative into a positive! Lol
@@iamchazhaynes7074 I literally just finished doing the distributor 30 minutes ago. Fired right up. Still needs fine tuning to stay idling, but no misfires, knocks or anything. Again, great video!
@@JustinCupler Awesome!! Glad I could help having that distributor wrong is a NIGHTMARE!! Happy it worked out!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
nice video man!
Thanks bro!!
great video
So I installed my distributor just like this and my timing is retarted 10 degrees in the exact position in this video. So when I advance it 10 degrees it’s at TDC or 0 on my timing light ?
Bro your input on the top dead center is the best on youtube.. for 2 days u stumbled and could not figure it out then u u said the paper towel trick and my car Crunk right up . It trill surges just a little do u have any suggestions on what it might be. Thanks
Thank you I just made the da
I knew it was something about your video y i watch rhem 1 your horse sounds pretty good. I put my distributor in wrong thanks
Thanks man!! And glad I could help! It freaked me out super bad when I installed it wrong the first time so I made this just to help out!
Hey man nice vid! Just got a foxbody, 88 efi, had a few issues got it running smoother, still doesn't seem all there though. My distributor is about where yours was in the incorrect spot. I timed it and it was way off at 6°, think it was on nitrous. has a few mods small cam ect. so I set it at 12°. Running a lot better but still seems to have a misfire at times. This is my first ford so I'm learning lol gunna try this and see if it's off, in my time anytime I've been a tooth off it will barely run, gunna pull the dizzy and see, lyk what I find! Thanks again 😎
On these cars specially if they have been fooled with before make sure on your intake hoses you have clamps on, specially the big ones like the brake booster one,the little tiny ones like the one that goes to your fuel regulator, those are normally tight without clamps, little vacuum leaks that are almost impossible to detect will drive you to drink and your idle will be all over the place, get you a cheap code scanner on eBay that gives you numbers and not beeps so you can pull codes on it,helps a lot too, make sure you gap your spark plugs to 54 or so,a wrongly gaped plug can also cause all kinds of rough operation and of course like you say in your comment, if your distributor is off to begin with everything else is secondary, gotta get that fixed first.
Does it work the same with the F150 efi 5.0 302 motors? I'm still having trouble with mine. I just watched the video and haven't done anything yet.
so you found TDC when the paper pops out, but the balancer is still way off. what do you do next. won't turning the engine throw TDC off?
Love your video. Im working on my 95 mustang gt. Do i leave it at 0 tdc when go to start it. Then use timing light to get at 10 or so? Or put harmonic balancer at 5 or 10 then start? Thank u
Damn I love srt4 ♥️
Thanks man!!
Thanks! The tip you gave about dizzy alignment helped me alot.
For anyone trying to disable the computer, there's a little jumper in a wire lead coming off the module.
Pull the jumper and you have ONLY initial timing!
You can also remove the other seven plugs, leaving #1 in the head. Turn it over until you feel the compression and then match your timing marks.
Great idea! In all of my years of doing it I’ve never heard of that or thought of doing it that way. So simple!
How do you know when you are hitting the compression side on cylinder one and will the timing Mark's, automatically line up tdc?thanks
Say man great job doin the video thanl you, Ok now ive gotten that far my next issue is the starter engages but will not rotate the engine yet the engine is not locked up and the flexplate is good , What gives she just will not crank
Omg thank you bro,
Glad I could help!!
Hmm ive always had the rotor button facing the #1 cylinder instead of the center of the engine. Weve always gotten it to run but id end up using the non h-o firing order on an h-o engine, was perplexing. Im going to try it this way with the h-o 302 im putting in my 77 f150.
