  • Witsit Gets It is a flat earther I hadn't seen before. Does he have new ideas and the will to convert swathes of people to flat earth? Or (and this is much more likely), does he have the same old arguments that have been debunked before. He obviously just "doesn't get it".
    Exposing more Dunning-Kruger in todays Flat Earth Friday!

    Here’s how burden of proof works:
    Say you have a classroom of 100 people and they have to solve a problem. To make things easy, the problem is 1+1 in this example. They all put their heads together, and do some experiments and they come to the conclusion that 1+1 = 2. One guy says “So it’s agreed everyone? 1+1 is 2?” Everyone agrees, and that becomes the consensus. A while later, someone comes along and says “No, no, no you’re all wrong. 1+1 is 3.” Of course, everyone’s going to look at him like wtf are you talking about. We all came to the conclusion the answer is 2. So it’s now up to this guy to give evidence as to how he came to the conclusion that it’s 3 when everyone else already had proven the answer is 2. This is how it works, and anyone that tries to say it’s the other way around (flat earthers) is delusional.

    • @ReValveiT_01
      @ReValveiT_01 4 роки тому +22

      Precisely. Of course, given that they have no proof, all they can do is shift the burden. Then when they see our proof, they scream "fake!". This is how dishonest people have always worked. Nothing new here.

      @Otakahunt 4 роки тому +23

      @@Kyrelel you obviously didnt read the whole comment. The proof was when everyone did their experiments and came into the same conclusion (they didnt necessarily do the exact same experiment)... but guess what flat earthers dont do that, they dont even have a model they all agree on. They do tests but then delete the results if it doesnt help their cause. *cough* Bob *cough*
      They all say its flat but they have different ideas on how its flat, is it a puddle in a neverending snow-plain or is it a pancake floating somewhere - they dont agree which. Are the stars artificial lights floating inside the dome or attached in the dome itself - they do not know which.
      So just like what Keith said, flerfs dont have proof of their own claim and they shift the burden to globers... "we say the earth is flat, disprove us or we are right" - and they have been disproven but they deny it. :D

      Humanity is generally on a see-saw if you take the 'short view'. While in the long view we've been going in a very obviously better direction overall, if you broke it down to decades, you'd see how things went from enlightened to 'we're all dead...if we're lucky' to 'huh, this particular noble set up a tiny free school for the serfs' to 'welp - this duke is a horrific sadist that likes to mutilate the servants' on and on.
      We lurch forward towards a better future as we're able, but there have always been forces that wish to keep that from happening. We just have to roll with it and try to do our part to keep this sort of stupidity from coalescing in our own families and friend groups if possible. Not much to be done for the insistently ignorant - just have to hope they grow out of it, or the rest of the population becomes too educated to fall for it.

      All of these "debunking" sites are part of the same problem. They are complicit in the flat earth scam. Lots of people are making lots of money from this scam including the likes if scimandan. @@Lunarfacia I will respectfully disagree. The advent of the communication abilities we have is giving a platform to the flat earth community, it is not what has invented it. Debunking series are a typical result of disagreeing points of view. These debates have been happening for generations, youtube has simply made them public.
      Now as for your comments on making money off of it. I say why not. They are taking their time, putting in effort, and providing a form of entertainment. They only make money because someone is watching. Don't blame the creator, blame the audience.
      Also people would still be attacking 5G engineers. People freaked out that cameras were stealing your soul. People thought phones were witchcraft. People don't handle change well.

    • @Lunarfacia
      @Lunarfacia 4 роки тому +1

      You've missed the point in a number of issues. UA-cam may provide the platform but it us the "debunking" videos that make it appear that it is a topic worthy of debate. That is why I hold the people making these videos to account and not the people watching them. Richard Dawkins refuses to debate creationists in case it gives the impression to anyone that evolution vs creationism are two ideas based on an equal footing. They simply aren't and, as a result, the proliferation of this kind of recuctionist thinking is creeping into society with very negative effects.
      5G engineers would not simply be attacked anyway f it were not for conspiracy theories being able to fester and gather support. As I mentioned previously, in the past the loonies were isolated and had no ability to let dangerous ideas gain a large amount of support very quickly. Now they do have that ability so tbe last thing we need to do is help them. That's exactly what these "debunking" videos do. Of the 11,000 + people who watched this video,how many do you think knew the name Nathan Oakley before watching videos like this? Very few I would wager. Being introduced to odious vermin is bad enough,helping him to make money is unforgivable.
      As for the people making the "debunking" videos making money, I most certainly don't think it is OK. It is dressed up as science but the science on display is superficial at best and they are making their money by promoting a group of verminous charlatans so that they can piggy back on the gravy train. If any one of them has a scintilla of of understanding about these things then they will know that the flat earth people are a. Undereducated, paranoid and incapable of taking part in reasoned debate or b. They are con merchants holding particular views for financial gain. Either way you cannot win an argument with them. If they know this (and only a fool would assume they don't) they they are complicit in this hoax and are contributing to a gradual but noticeable dimming of public reasoned enlightenment.
      These videos are part of the problwm.

    • @davidalleyn4221
      @davidalleyn4221 4 роки тому +9

      @@Lunarfacia I understand your argument, however I believe that you are putting too much value into the fact people will be heavily influenced simply because such videos exist. Giving credibility to an argument because it is opposed by a man in a t-shirt on youtube isn't the same as if it was a NASA engineer from the ISS.
      Anyone who discovers Nathan Oakley through Scimandan will look at it skeptically or was predisposed to the concept of flat earth already and was just a few google searches from finding him on their own.
      And as for just letting the problem disappear into the aether, if that was always true, shouldn't there be no need for debunking videos already? Round earth has been proven for hundreds of years already.
      I would rather have an opposing voice to the conspiracy theories, than to let them hide in the shadows until someone finds them and they resurface.

      That is always the angle which makes me chuckle, and tickles my medula ablongata. But, we were indoctrinated in the strictest sense.
      Specifically, we were first taught (or presented) how we go about formulating hypotheses and theories, obtain and verify evidence.
      Then, we are indoctrinated (presented) with the model and the history behind it.
      Then, we are challenged to apply this knowledge to show to ourselves not only that something is true but why it is true, and we make make up our own minds.
      This multi-stage process is called learning. I did not use the words teach or taught because by nature, if you did not transfer information or missed a step, then learning did not take place, at least fully. Teaching is directly tied to learning.
      But I digress. Teaching is not indoctrination in one sense. The common colloquial application for indoctrination is it is one way communication from a top level down. You do not have that in the educational context.

She belonged to an Edgar Cayce "study group". One the the revelations she shared was that there was this special place on earth with no gravity. And the proof was that all the trees there grew at a 90% tilt. Needless to say, I did not argue or even ask for clarification on WTF a 90% tilt even means. The loonies they have always been out there and always will. Best stay clear and ignore. Until they become presidents or something.

Then because he is “right” he believes he doesn’t have to prove anything. Surprisingly though, by his own admission, he tells us that he hasn’t got all the information and therefore hasn’t got a model. Why not? What has be been doing all of his time? Has he just been blasting away at his keyboard and ignoring the world outside his trailer? I’ll give this numptie one question to answer: If we live on a flat Earth then why do we have horizons in front of things? That has to be geometrically impossible on a flat Earth. My suggestion to this chuff-nugget would be to zip off and start learning more about the about the planet (either the real one or his imaginary one) and then present us with a model. 1. You can prove There is gravity by shooting a ball into the air at the same speed the earth is moving upward towards this ball. If there is no gravity then the ball should never hit the ground.
    2. If it is clear skies, you would be able to see the lights of Chicago while standing on top of the Empire State Building. As it's only a 1,000 miles from NY to Chicago!
    3. In the southern states flying from say Dallas, Tx to YW at 35,000 feet you would be able to see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. Fact is you can't see either ocean at 35,000 feet in Texas headed north. Why because the earth is curved.
    4. Explain why water turns clockwise in what we call the Northern hemisphere and why it turns counterclockwise in what we call the Southern Hemisphere? Fact this can be seen with our own eyes and been proven by Weather.

      Daxyl This whole "or it could just be" argument is unscientific and is very annoying. Yes, it could be that there is a unicorn residing in the belt of asteroids located between the orbital ellipses of Earth and Mars. However, there is no evidence that this is such, and trying to act like this is somehow equally as likely as the contrary is ridiculous. My point is that the same is true for dark matter. The same is true for any scientific discovery. In fact, I could use that same argument to say "it could be that our understanding of physics is wrong and the Earth really is flat." Yes, it obviously is possible, but the likelihood is so tiny that it is not worth considering. General relativity is supported by overwhelming amounts of evidence, and so is the Lambda CDM model. Is it possible that they are wrong? Yes it is, but it is genuinely a million times more likely that dark matter really does exist.

      P. Spit
      I can prove the earth is not flat.
      I lived in Alaska for over 20 years. During the summer, the day was 19&1/2 hours long and the reverse in the winter. Not only that, but instead of the sun passing high overhead in the sky, it would rise and trace a low arc all the way around the horizon and set near where it rose; and during the winter, it was the opposite. The sun rose and set in a short arc on one side of the sky. There is no flat earth model that can explain such phenomenon. If the most northerly latitudes are in the center of the “disk” then it should be the opposite. There is no way for a sun to rise and set on a disk world that can explain the differences in where the sun travels across the sky at different latitudes and the varying length of day at different latitudes. At the equator, the sun always rises and sets with a narrow area high across the center of the sky while it’s completely different at high and low latitudes. Only a spherical earth that has a tilted axis that points towards the sun in summer in the northern hemisphere (while it’s winter in the southern hemisphere) and away from the sun during winter can explain the various differences in the sun’s position and arc across the sky, the variation in day length, as well as the pattern of seasons in both hemispheres.
      Picture it in your head or buy a globe and use a flashlight to simulate the sun in a dark room. When the tilted axis is pointed towards from the sun during summer in the northern hemisphere, as the planet turns, a person living at high latitude (such as in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia, etc.) sees the sun at a different angle than someone living at the equator; hence why it traces a low arc around almost the entire horizon instead of being high in the sky. This also explains why the days are so long; because the earth’s axis is tilted towards the sun, as the planet rotates, a person that far north only spends a short part of the day in shadow so the night is extremely short and most of the day is spent in daylight.
      There is no flat earth model that can explain these dynamics. No amount of jury rigging can produce an explanation for this basic reality. Every person who has lived at high latitude has experienced these phenomenon on a daily basis; having almost 20 or more hours of light and being able to sit outside and read at midnight during the very middle of summer becomes normal. There are no angles at which the sun can “travel” across a flat earth that can explain this. Even if we conceived of the sun circling around the earth in a coplanar manner so that it move around the edge of the “disk”, this still cannot explain the differences in the sun’s angle and the variations in the length of the day. In such a case, the entire “disk” would see the same height of the sun and in essence, the sun would never set. It would be daylight 24 hours a day for the entire “disk.” So the flat earth model cannot explain these phenomenon (among many others.) it just doesn’t work.
